View Full Version : So it looked like the title was "Ninja Turtles"... what would you think?
Andrew NDB

Are you happy with that title? We've known they're still mutants for a long time now (though to me it's a big "Who cares?" if they're aliens or not, given the rest of the... material we know about), but they might not even be teenagers in this. Do you think just "Ninja Turtles" sets it apart from the other films and universes?
Me, I'd always thought "Ninja Turtles" was a perfectly sound title for when the Turtles cease being teenagers. Never really happened anywhere, not even in the comics. It happened in "Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation," but they were still 17 in that.
*Edit: So it looks like they've re-added the "Teenage Mutant" to the title, as of today.

Actually it's not. From today:
The American International toy fair held in New York City has revealed toy figurines from 2014 movie "Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles". Here is some exclusive info we learned at the fair.
*
1. The movie title will in fact be called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". The original title "Ninja Turtles" was changed so late in the process that many toys feature the old prominent title.

I gotta go with "TINO". From the information so far it seems to have very little to do with TMNT.
You bring up a good point by dropping teenage and just keeping ninja turtles to indicate that they might not even be teenagers. That would work if that's the kind of approach they take. However, I'm under the impression that it was still Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Every part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should always be present in various media.

It's fine by me. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the 1990 film. Ninja Turtles is the 2014 reboot. Same way the studio couldn't call Batman Begins, Batman ... that's the '89 film. Distinct separation of the brands.
I feel the same way.

Same way they didn't call Man of Steel ... Superman.
I personally think that's more to do with Superman not actually becoming Superman until the end of the events in the movie... though the reality of it seems that it was a title just carried over from when it was still going to be Singer's Superman Returns 2.

We know, now, that the title is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but Ninja Turtles is fine by me. After Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1990, and TMNT in 2007, I feel like this movie should have a different title. Just because it's ABOUT the teenage mutant ninja turtles, doesn't mean they couldn't come up with a new title, like Man of Steel, The Dark Knight, or The Amazing Spider-Man. I don't know what it should be, but something that suits this particular movie.

You just put together an awesome set of titles for the movies, ala TDK trilogy, that doesn't rely on Ninja Turtles I, Ninja Turtles II, Ninja Turtles III and unimaginative crap like that.

Confirmed final title or not, "Ninja Turtles" would be a fine choice for this movie. Not only it would avoid the confusion set by other movies as described above, but when most people talk about the franchise in public, "Ninja Turtles" seems to be the most common way to name the brand. SOTO provided a subtitle to the first, and additional subtitles will work fine with any future films. But even if it was called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", I still wouldn't care since I could spend an entire day naming the literally hundreds and hundreds of films that have the same name but are treated separately. King Kong, Transformers, Titanic, Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz, Star Trek, and so much more, yet they tend to be release long enough apart so that a certain generation can claim it to be "their" film.

We're stuck with retread of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title. Wish they would've kept it Ninja Turtles.
As much apathy as I have for the movie, I do as well, for a couple of different reasons. It really seems like they were set on it being "Ninja Turtles" they kowtowed to what the reaction they were seeing from all the overwhelming number of sound-minded, reasonable TMNT fans there are on the internet...

To be fair I doubt that anyone would have cared about the title had it not been as good as confimation of the awful idea that the turtles were supposed to aliens - something later confimed by that leaked script.
After that they were practically indebted to change the title to send the message the turtles as aliens concept had been changed.
If not for that then the title of simply "Ninja Turtles" would have been fine, I have to laugh though at how small the words "Teenage Mutant" are in that title like the couldn't be bothered coming up with a new logo and just grudgingly sneaked in the other words. Kind of representative of how the whole movie has been made really.

Because the "teenage mutant" looks like it's been put in as an afterthought.
It's as if someone reminded them the movie has been re-titled at the last minute and they just added it in to a logo they already which is strange because the title was changed a while ago.
Either that or they had a lot of lead time but they were too lazy to come up with a new logo so just added in a small "teenage mutant" to pre-existing Ninja Turtles logo which doesn't look "right" now.
The fact that some merchandise has the altered and some hasn't is strange and why aren't they using the new logo they've been using on the set of the actual movie which to its credit look like it was it was designed to incorporate the full title?
In and of themselves these aren't issues normally worth commenting on but it representative of a movie were titles change and major plot elements are being thought up while on the set and no one involved that publicly comments can reach a consensus on what kind of movie this is.

That doesn't counter my points of why they simply added the other part in a manner which the logo was never designed for or why some merchandise has the altered logo and some don't or why they are not using the (better) one that the movie seems to using.
Also the logos you posted just hit the eye better. Think of the word "turtles" in this context as a punchline to a joke or an unexpected twist at the end of a sentence. That's why the word always dwarfs the others in the logo. It just works.
If it's just Ninja Turtles then the Playmates original logo works fine. There is less build up so the word "ninja" can be almost as big as the word "turtles" but they've hastily added in the extra part of the title in a manner which you can almost hear them saying.....oh yeah they're also kinda also mutants and teenagers again"

Agreed. I think the TMNT brand has been around long enough to be recognized either way, and the Teenage Mutant part was only tacked back on as damage control from the whole "aliens" thing. In the end, as long as they still are in fact teenage mutants, I don't care if they include those words in the title.

Well, I mean they are trained ninjas.. Teenagers or not, self discipline and control is kind of an essential part of being a ninja. They did still have their "teenage" moments too though.

The posters are supposed to be part of the merchandise presentation and they differ from what's on the boxes in the sense the don't have that clumsy adjustment.
Also where are you getting the idea that the movie was going to be called "Ninja Turtles" just to simplify things. Pretty sure the main reason that was the title of the movie was that because they weren't mutants in this version until they buckled to fan/studio pressure to change that element.

Micheal Bay.
The leaked script for Ninja Turtles that different sites continue to comment on was written well before I, or anyone at Platinum Dunes, was involved with the project.
That script saw the shredder a long time ago.
This is tired, old news — Wait for the movie!
-Michael
P.S. To end this stupid merry go round and explain the math. Yes we signed on two years ago to Turtles, but with no deal in place. Deal completed towards end of last year. And yes, thats how long deals sometimes take. So no work was done on the script. Blame Paramount, not us for the first draft.
Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.

Micheal Bay.
Yes he said that.
So how come that script was dated after he got involved?
Leaving that aside for one moment are we really suggesting that Bay would say "these turtles are from an alien race" and the awful leaked script had them as aliens that it wasn't at least a version of the scipt he was working with and his intention wasn't for the turtles to be aliens?
I'm sure you'll bring up that much later Bay said he was "misquoted" and that he didn't go out of his way to correct this. He actually wasn't misquoted as there's video of him saying those words but if what he surely meant was he accidentally said the wrong thing and we all jumped to the wrong conclusion and ran with it.
Except he did publicly speak out almost immediately and made no effort to clarify what he meant, he just told us all to "chill" and how great the script was. In fact Jonathan Leibesman also commented immediately and didn't deny that the turtles were aliens even Kevin Eastman chimed in saying that in the comics if you look closely it suggests they are aliens (oh Kevin:tconfuse:).
Also since there are scenes and elements from that leaked script we know have made it into the upcoming movie then it seems that script didn't see the shredder as much as Bay claims.
Also hasn't Leibesman as good as admitted that the turtles were aliens but they changed that aspect - another sign that the movie is being made in a haphazard way.
Defend this movie all you want but it was their intention to make the turtles aliens and that what we'd be getting if the public reaction hadn't been overwhelmingly negative.

What ever you want to believe that fine I just dont think everything is as it appears there are plenty of misconceptions when it comes to film making and this movie in-particular. Movies are A complex thing and thinking you know how a movie will turn out.
But from the Evidence from those who have seen it, they're ecstatic and excited and keep trying to keep people who are upset from being so, same goes for everyone else involved. Almost everyone who has made contact with the public with this movie has said nothing but praise for this production and cautions everyone that they're being over dramatic and while yes they're working on something so they want it to be a positive thing. it doesn't change the fact.
ADDED:
Also the script has most definitely had some drastic changes as well. the only possible things kept are the snow scene(which we only have vague reports of, and are missing a lot of context about) and the possibility of having a complete military foot which as state time and time again there has been more then enough evidence to prove this is just not going to be true.

And, with how far the original comics have progressed, TMNT is a better variable, since they are no longer teenagers in that saga. How old were they when it left off, nearing their 40's, right?

That script was the real deal and the turtles were going to be aliens until the reaction to the leak. Does anyone involved dispute this anymore, it's not even arguable at this point. (I'm sure some people could try but then there's still people out there that believe the Earth is flat.)
Of course an argument can be made that it shouldn't affect our opinions now that it's no longer the case that they will be aliens but for me at least the very fact that the people making this movie thought that and Schrader and and everything else about that script was good calls their capacity to judge this movie into question. Even worse that it wasn't changed out of their own impetus but because of mass amounts of complaints.
Let's not pretend that movies don't rely on people making up their minds before they see it. That's the point of marketing and promotion and hype building to convince people it's a movie worth seeing and here is why I side with the fans that are clamoring for something...anything to be released but we're getting nothing and sadly what little has generally been released has had the opposite effect.

The people working on the movie obviously believe they have a quality product on their hand but like I said they believed they had a quality product in the making when it was about aliens and ancient prophecies and the like and as you point out even if they didn't really feel this way they surely wouldn't voice it publicly.

I think people wil think what they want to think and them saying one thing or an other wont change that, even if paramount came out and said yes that script was created before platinum dunes started work on the movie people would still believe what they want.
Well Bay has already tried to claim that but it was debunked not just by a simple piece of evidence but by also by Jonathan Leibesman himself.
Also you don't have to be a cynic to conclude that Bay claiming the turtles were aliens was in reference to the script were the turtles were aliens.
Nor do you have to be cynical to conclude that script was connected to Platinum Dunes if there's very unique and specific scenes and elements taken from it in the picture they're shooting.
I think they took the fan reaction into acount and started making changes the yfelt the fans would be ok with, and from the conversation i have seen with the exception of Mbay they all try to explain alien connection are not the foreign to the turtles. And Liebsmon even talks about the Ooze binging from aliens in the original.
Actually another big giveaway is that for ages everyone involved in the picture who commented danced around the subject neither confirming or denying whether the turtles are aliens.
In one of the interviews you linked Jonathan Leibesman seemed to try and make the point that the was an alien aspect to the turtles origin anyway, I would argue his intention was to point out it wouldn't be much of a stretch to make them aliens.
Also Kevin Eastman claimed he didn't know but made a bizarre claim that it's hinted that the turtles are actually aliens in the comics so it wouldn't a big deal if the movie made them aliens.
They have had screenings and BTS many time as sen throught out twitter post certain movie site posts and descriptions leaking.
They have been shown footage and many BTS info.
I'm unaware there's been any screenings.
As far as I know journalists have been on the set and treated very well and had very nice chats with people involved where they've been assured they have the best intentions that it's faithful to mythology and fans will love it but nothing specific.
Other than that they've seen designs perhaps the maquettes and I don't think it would take a genius to know that those designs would divisive so maybe they're not the best person to judge. Of course it could be a reference to the level of cgi - in fact that's one of the few things tha actual actors genuinely excited about but I don't think anyone has ever doubted that the turtles will amazingly animated and detailed but even the best cgi in the world wont make those designs anymore palatable to those that don't care for them.
If they felt so strongly about the aliens thing then they would have kept it the way they wanted it and i find it a good thing that they changed it one and 2 got other people to help with the making it IE Kevin even thought you dont trust his opinions i do and so do others and its abit harsh to punish him.
In the damning with faint praise department I'll say that Bay is capable of listening to the fans and the proof is which is that he actually altered the design of Optimus Prime he was going to use in the first Transformers movie after seeing fan reactions to an early design and put the cherry on top by also getting Peter Cullen to voice him which he wasn't going to do.
Notice a difference with how this movie is treated? There has been no release of designs even at this late date. There could be no fan input in the same way as there was with the first Transformers movie.
For months they tried to cleverly evade answering the question of whether the turtles were aliens and suggested that it wouldn't be unfaithful to the source material if they were. I'm positive they assumed that we'd all be eating crow and loving how much better their TMNT would be until we actually saw what it was and we didn't love it.
It was only after that script leaked that that production was halted and drastic changes were being made and all the interviews since then were very quick to point out in no uncertain terms the turtles were not aliens.
I'm sure that script would have been rewritten and altered but there should be no doubt that's along the lines of what we getting until the negative reaction which I suppose is fanservice of sorts.
They thing was is when they first started working on TNM is when he commented then the studio tok over and im sure there were changes made and once it came to air it was different then from what originally was pitch happens all the time so at the beginning he was all for it but once it started to air or after many changes were made his opinion may have changed but im not sure
The Next Mutation was Kevin's baby and even if theoretically it didn't match what he originally envisioned (which is something I've not heard before) he still led fans to believe that it was a dark series because that's what fans at the time wanted to hear.
Also Kevin praises every version (at least publicly) so he's not exactly a good barometer of whether a TMNT product will be received well by the fans or the general public.
