To me seems to be their size, and strength? Seems like they're being transformed from cute, shorter than April martial artists. To brute, hulking well over 6' turtles as described by viewers of the trailer. This bothers me the most. Especially the rumors of their proposed strength.

The studios are banking that the often coveted Boy/Male market will flock to see male-gaze centric wish fulfillment on the screen.

Well that's all Megan Fox is good for after all. If this movie was supposed to be about positive female role models maybe they should have chosen a female actress known for her talent rather than her boobs.

i think if done right it could work im mean really in 2007 they were larger sleeker but stil larger then most version, and as for strength i always assumed when i was younger that they were stronger if i remember correctly i remember them lifting a car. but how large is large i mean im 6'2 and i have a friend that 6'7 and if pretty fit, while big thats not humongous, know if that were 7'8" then yeah that be pretty tall but i doubt they are that big. i think if no right in the right setting it could very well work

You want catering to the female gaze you've got to look towards the Thor and Captain America movies. Long, lingering, full body shots of men as objects of desire. That's what I'm talking about.

This version of Shredder is a question mark (He's sounding like Green Goblin). But this is the change I find most interesting and exciting. The things The Blue Door did with combat were glorious.

I like the idea of the turtles having some weight to them...I know they are supposed to be teenagers and all, but something about their build in the new Nick 'toon doesn't seem right to me. Its probably because my favorite iteration has been the 2k3 series; I like they presence they commanded with their size.

And also the fact the Turtles have a hard shell on there back, I could see one of them getting hit and smashing through a wall causing a bit of structural damage.

If you want to make them slightly bigger, fine.
But being over 6 feet tall and giving them the strength to flip a moving car over is horseshit.

However it could be just an over exaggeration by the TrickorTreat, CyberCubed, Leo656, RamboRaph, #42 hate club who have their mind made up on this movie much before and either confused something they saw to over exaggerate to make it sound worse than it is.
Face it. The people who love and look forward to this movie...at this point Nothing and I mean Nothing is going to change your mind. And the vice versa is true too. When I can plainly see a train wreck heading towards my way, I can either stand there and let the big son of a bitch hit me, or I can get out of the way.

I'm shocked to see so many people have such low standards in their entertainment.
"eh as long as it can hold my gaze for 2 hours its awesome" or "at least teh fighting will be awesome."
Man. That's sad. I've never expected a Turtle movie to be oscar-worthy high art, but it needs to be good and not in the "so bad it's good" way.
Pity. Maybe one day we'll get some actually talented folks who'll give us a great couple of Ninja Turtle movies in a row.
My only hope is that the 1990 movie will get a decent re-release in the run-up to August. Clean up the picture a bit, give us a few bonus features. That'd be nice.
I just keep trying to look for that silver lining.

Because what should I be happy about?
News of the Original Script?
Casting of actors that I don't like and don't care for? (Megan Fox to me can't act, Will Arnett I don't care for as a comedian, William Fichtner I've never cared for as an actor and is a poor choice as a villain from the multiple movies I've seen from him.)
The producer and production company that did horrible remakes like Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hitcher, and Amityville Horror?
The peaks at the Turtles look which looked horrible (In My Opinion) because they look like giant Steroid Abusers/Juicers and ones like Raph has ugly as hell Primate-type Noses? Or Mikey with his Demon face?
The news of people seeing the trailer and not having the most positive reactions?
A beat by beat description of the trailer that sounds lame, boring, and lacking of any excitement that a teaser Should do? Yeah, I should be excited for Snow, Subways, Megan, Will, and the makers changing everything 'just for the f*ck of it' and "just because they can."
The sinking feeling that it's going to be Megan and Will in the forefront and the Turtles in the background? And if/when that's the case, then what...are people Still going to be Fine with a Turtles movie where they don't actually star in it? (and I truly think some Would be fine with it.)
This film has done Nothing upon Nothing to make me feel otherwise. It's not nitpicking when Not A Single Thing sounds or looks interesting. Just MY opinion.

Of course it could be done right. I don't mind them being taller, or more muscular. More mutated. The new turtles seem to be based off this recent re-invented look:
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/images/uploads/teenage_mutant_ninja_turtles_by_nebezial.jpg
Which is good. They're taller, the lips, the faces. Just with clothes It seems very directly based off this artwork. Which is cool considering I felt these were very Michael Bay-ized TMNT to begin with. And the guy from IGN said they did look like the picture taken and several other said they look like the turtles we know know one thing i seem to see trending is those who are already negative keep posting from the same two pages with the movie negative POV which to me means they do not take into account other opinion only those that are negative but from those who actually were there there were more positive views on the turtle everything else fallowing were re-account posted from the two negative sites.
What bothers me is the rumored strength. Flipping cars with their hands like the Hulk? That just takes things too far, into a different concept of the ninja turtles. Agree?
However it could be just an over exaggeration by the TrickorTreat, CyberCubed, Leo656, RamboRaph, #42 hate club who have their mind made up on this movie much before and either confused something they saw to over exaggerate to make it sound worse than it is.
They could've seen the clip of the turtle falling down the mountain then slamming into a car, who knows.
I really thing they are. Obviously as i have said before you are not going to make everyone happy it just doesn't work out that way.
I highly doubt they saw a sizzle reel months in advance, well before they even finished this teaser trailer this month. It takes a while for even brief clips of full CG characters like that to be rendered.
I question the validity of what happened till I see it for myself.
I'm still really skeptical About the supposed Information leaked about flipping a car with one hand business, but i think i will judge thing based off of my opinions first hand not some random people with jumbled opinions and mixed information

So...you're telling me things I already know?
Yeah, I was mad about it from the beginning. Did I say that wasn't the case? Nope. Never said that wasn't the case.
Why do you think I've been looking at the news all this time? So it can change my mind, to make me a believer, to make me go 'hey, that's not too bad, let me give it a chance' or at least 'ah, that sounds okay.'
And not a single thing so far has done that.
As a turtle fan. Why?

?
Ramboraph4life aka Matt

As a turtle fan. Why?
Because I didn't want a "Transformers with Shells."
Because for the first live action film of these characters in over 20 years, I would like a Ninja Turtles film where the Turtles are actual 3-Dimensional Characters (emotions, family moments and bonding, character development & build-up, character arcs that get fulfilled). Which isn't a silly idea or concept as I'm sure some will say because other comic book films have done this same thing.
When these people got involved, I really didn't see that happening. Instead, now I was hoping "well, I at least hope now that they will Actually star in the films...unlike the Transformers did in their own films."
And then wondering if Michael Bay as producer would learn from Spielberg who produced his Transformers films (in which the writers of those films have said, on Commentary, that Spielberg told them to put the Humans in the forefront because 'it has to be from the Humans perspective.")
Every piece (for me) hasn't dissuaded me. Whether it be the casting or anything else. I just have huge doubts that these people care that much about the fan base. And hey, I get it. It's not their job. Their job is to make a movie that makes enough money for more movies.
At the same time, it's the sentiment if "If they don't care, then why should I care?"
Do I have proof? No. And if people do look forward to the film, then hey...I have no right to say otherwise. That's honestly perfectly fine.
And I would love to sit here and go "Yes, I look forward to it." You have no idea how I would love to sit here and go "I can't Wait!"
But I would be lying if I did.
I would like a Ninja Turtles movie that gets people to take these characters seriously and not 'a joke.' And so far, to me in My Opinion (not fact, just my opinion) it does sound like a joke so far. And a Bad one. One that people will laugh at very much.
And for a new Live Action Ninja Turtles flick in 20 years, that does make me Sad.

Ones you have called boring, and/or had major beefs with. But for the TMNT, of course in your book it's ok?
The 1990 film very much had dimensions to the turtles. Even more so than the 2k3 series, where everyone seems to be one note.
TMNT 1990 did this w/ April, Danny, and Casey.
At least April, and Casey are true mythos characters.
TMNT SOTO did this w/ Keno. It didn't start w/ Michael Bay. As for ILM and their work on the Transformer films, and now TMNT?
You do realize the CG is very expensive? So human plot points and scenes, while not exclusively following just the Transformers, or in this case the Turtles is a money saving venture, right?
SOTO sucked
TMNT III sucked
Next Mutation sucked
2k3 was pretty decent, but under the radar
TMNT 2k7 sucked
2k12 is pretty decent, but very popular.
I don't think this film, no matter how bad is ruining anything Ninja Turtles related long term.
Soto didn't suck, and the first three movies had tons of parts with the turtles, and April and casey were usually seen with the turtles.

Soto didn't suck, and the first three movies had tons of parts with the turtles, and April and casey were usually seen with the turtles.
Agreed. And the Turtles were still seen as the stars of those movies. SOTO I enjoy and had lots of fun/character moments of the Turtles themselves (like Mikey chewing loudly on purpose to annoy Raph, a fun character bit for Mikey.)
"But with the TMNT, of course it'd be ok in your book." Since they're my favorite fandom? I would think that would be obvious. Sorry that I'm not the biggest Batman fan so thus Dark Knight didn't appeal to me as much as others. Maybe if I loved Batman as a character as much as the Turtles, then it would.
Is that okay with you, sir?
Keno was a side character. Not the star (which was my Point).
I KNOW the 1990 film had it. Did I say it didn't? Thus why I would not only like to see that done again but Expanded.
And the Turtles Don't need to be CGI. To me, the suits in the first 2 films look Fantastic and that was over 20 years ago. Just do suits again (and if you need to do it CGI, then just do it with the mouths/eyes. Bingo, lots of money saved AND you can still do plot points and scenes.) It didn't need to be 100% CGI with them. If you disagree, cool.

SOTO is a bad film. You're nostalgia glasses are fogged up.
Sorry, I can say a lot of good things about the film without your condescending words of "nostalgia goggles fogged up."
The voice work of the Turtles, in my opinion, is still the best group of voices for the Turtles and I think they did an Excellent job bringing those characters to life.
Jim Henson's shop made beautiful animatronics that, to me, still holds up today.
Keno was a decent side character and Ernie Reyes Jr. didn't do a bad job acting.
The score fit the film very well.
The fight scenes were entertaining to watch and more than decently choreographed.
Small but Fun family moments that I can pick up on that made me believe more that they were a family; like Mikey rubbing Raphael's head to sooth Raph's anger when he got his foot stomped by Keno....Mikey chewing his food more loudly/on purpose to rile Raph up....then actually playing around and having fun like Brothers.
Not too long, pretty quickly paced.
But, I guess I can't go on because I'm not allowed to like the movie without my "nostalgia goggles fogging up", as you so eloquently put it.

The first movie combined elements from both Mirage and the original cartoon.
The second movie was basically just a straight up adaptation of the original cartoon.

I like SOTO. But I understand being bothered or disappointed by the change in tone. It's very awkward to do that during a series. I think Batman Forever and Batman & Robin strike a great tone, in terms of seriousness vs camp - for me, personally. But following Batman and Batman Returns makes it seem absolutely ridiculous. Because you're taking an established world and making it crazier. If 1990 was like SOTO, and carried more influence from OT, fans would probably have accepted it more. It's the change that hurts it.
Ramboraph4life aka Matt
03-25-2014, 02:32 PM
I agree with some of that but it's still a bad film even with it's nostalgia or charm. Still a hugestep down from the original. Poor plot. Corny, extra childish. Neutered weaponry, violence, and marital arts. More over the top, and campy. It ceased to take the material more seriously. That terrible climax and third act confrontation.
To you, it's a bad film. To me, it's not and it's a fun film. I could go on but it doesn't matter. Because it's not about 'me making you agree with me' or vice versa. It would at the end of the day end with "We agree to disagree."
What I have a problem with is the fact that apparently, to you, no one can actually enjoy that film without having 'nostalgia goggles that's fogged up.'

Sorry but I don't see how the costumes are quote 'shittier'. In fact, it's an improvement on the great ones in the first movie. And the voice acting? You have 2 from the first movie (Brian Tochi and Robbie Rist) and a Donatello that actually sounds more like what Donny "should sound like" instead of just "Corey Feldman sounding like Corey Feldman". They both look fine to me. And the animatronics for the faces flowed a bit smoother in the 2nd film. So still don't know what you mean.

Seriously? Look how much more realistic the textures look in the first movie, also look at their faces, Donnie looks like he's thinking and Mikey looks laid back. Now look at SOTO they all almost look the same, they all have same stupid expression...

Nope, don't see any of what you're talking about. They both still look great.
SOTO, they don't all have the same expressions. Raph is curious, Donnie has a big grin, Leo is a bit indifferent in that picture.
Even the pic you chose for the first one, Mikey & Donnie pretty much have the same look. Both leaned back, eyes a bit squinted, waiting.
I don't see those 'more realistic textures' you're talking about. I think both of the first two films did a great job. But oh well. And sorry, no matter what you're not going to make me think otherwise.
Like I SAID before, to each their own.

To me seems to be their size, and strength? Seems like they're being transformed from cute, shorter than April martial artists. To brute, hulking well over 6' turtles as described by viewers of the trailer. This bothers me the most. Especially the rumors of their proposed strength.
There wasnt discussion about this when all those pics came out?
I mean look...

I don't think I've seen this one before. According to Google, Alan Ritchson is 6'2". If those white balls are meant to be Raphael's eyes, he's gotta be around 7 feet tall.

The white balls are for mocap reference. Note his height in the fedora/trench coat shot. That's the character size.

I'm not expert on vfx or motion capture but I'm hard pressed to find any other explanation for those ping pong balls on stalks other than them being markers for where his eyes go.
Oh and I just noticed, in that one picture of Megan and Raph in the trench coat that Sighphi posted, the guy in blue in the foreground? That's Will Arnett/Vernon.
So THAT car belongs to either Megan Fox/April or Arnett/Vernon. Who are a tv news reporter and a cameraman respectively.
Is that an expensive car? Not really a car guy. Looks expensive.

You know, I like the fact that they are making them huge in this movie. It's different. I just hope that they still act like teenagers. The good thing about the Nick series is with their sizes and voices they look, sound, and act like teenagers. I just hope that they still do that with this movie, but as we get badass turtles that's awesome too. But they still gotta be teenagers.

"Tanagers" Bay teenagers will consist of them throwing a bunch of modern day references, like "You Chrome dome, this is going on Facebook" Or something similar...

Yeah but if they are that big where are they getting their clothing from?
There's like 3 Casual Male Big & tall stores in NYC and they are going to notice their clothing shipment missing pieces.

I suppose so! I'm not too current with the technology, but for shading/movement, typically the white balls would be placed relatively close to the head, right? Like this:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/lighthouse.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/268/original.jpg
I could be wrong, but wouldn't placing them several inches above the top of the actor's head make the shading/movement less accurate? And it seems like there'd have to be a specific reason for those two balls being placed where they are.
Or maybe I'm just over-analyzing this whole thing. :trazz:

thing is if they could not or would not resize raph wearing the trench coat then the white balls above his head are for an other reason other then eye placement.

Dont forget the miracle or camera framing. Tom Cruise is freaking 5'5'' or something and that dude does not appear to be that small in movies because he is shot to look bigger. The trench coat scene could involve close shots where you cant tell height while those other could include wider shots where height is not easy to hide.

Let's also consider that the balls over his head are like five or six inches apart. If they're not spaced exactly like eyes, what would be the point of using them as references for eyes?

Yes, unless they are for other references, like as I mentioned, the could be used for reflection and lighting references, for the reflection in his sunglasses or shiny as in his skin color. They did a similar technique with Iron Man, filming small metal balls painted in the same colors as the Iron Man suit was, so they had reflection references for the texture job on the CG model.
Or, if Raph have a scene where he extends his neck, it could be a reference point for Megan to look at when Raph raises his head, since real turtles can stretch their necks to pretty impressive lengths, a bit more realistic then tucking the head in on a humanoid turtle.
And, since the Mo-Cap suits they are using don't have balls on the , as they actually can fall easily off
Usually when using the ball suits, you have to be in a studio inside a ring of cameras to gather as much as info as possible, as the balls have to be constantly recorded to gather the information for the animation. So I doubt the two balls are for actual motion capture and are just there as a reference for something.

That's not that bad. It's not like he's 7 feet tall, or HULK like. He's just a beastly 6'5 ish mutated turtle. I can roll with that as long as he's not flipping trucks with his bare hands or anything. I can dig that ... but the strength thing is what ultimately worries me.
http://media.bestlittlesites.com/images/users/uploads/54573/tumblr_mq7rdnsqLJ1rsah24o1_1280.jpgI doubt hes just going to be able to flip a car with little to know effort, as being implied

Oh i know For sure. But the cameras aren't place in those shots as to get that feeling like they did with Bane.
Tom Hardy is like 5'9, and I've stood next to Bale ... he's a legit 6'1. They framed Bane to be his height or slightly taller in the movie. Movie magic my friends.

Those balls are for lighting/shading reference (for the face/character) relative to how everything else is being lit in the scene. I thought this was already discussed and settled on months ago?

It honestly seems like they are just going for a rip off version of Batman landing on the car in the Dark Knight when the windows blow out (because that shiz was a cool ass shot), but using the speed Raph is going and trying to show off the hardness of his shell to it wrecking the car, but yeah, it really seems a bit much.. ::tgrumble:

That's not catering to the female gaze, that's adding another self-insert for dudes to want to be.
You want catering to the female gaze you've got to look towards the Thor and Captain America movies. Long, lingering, full body shots of men as objects of desire. That's what I'm talking about.
Oh, he didn't do that with Will Smith in Bad Boys?
