I don't think it'll flop. I DO believe that a lot of TMNT fans severely over-estimate the popularity of the brand based on their own enthusiasm for it. History has shown, only a small number of people who call themselves "TMNT fans" will actually watch them on TV or, further still, pay money to see a movie, unless they have kids of their own. If everyone who said they loved and adored TMNT actually bought a ticket, the 2007 movie would have been a hit, and it wasn't.
I think it will meet some expectations and fall below others, financially. I don't think they're looking for or expecting "Avengers" money. No, and I mean NO way is that even a possibility. It'll make its budget back, but the fanbase is pretty solidly split on a lot of key things about the movie, and some people just aren't coming back on board this train.
That mid-August graveyard spot doesn't bode well, either. Think about it, do you have any idea how many parents, two weeks before school starts and in the midst of running around buying backpacks, shoes, school clothes, etc., and after already having shelled out a ton of cash shuffling their little mouth-breathers to the theater to see Captain America and Guardians and everything else all summer long, are actually gonna cave one last time for Ninja Turtles? Some, sure they will. But a lot won't. A LOT of parents are going to say, "you've been to the movies 20 times this summer and we just bought you those new Nikes you just had to have for school. We'll get you the DVD for Christmas, it's just a movie."
That IS going to happen. We'll see on what scale, but anyone who thinks that's not a factor is kind of naive. That is a flat-out awful spot on the summer calendar to release a movie, usually. It's gonna take a hit based on that, I'm almost sure.
"Flop", eh, I don't think so. Even if it's terrible, it'll have to be REALLY bad to scare off the "I'll go see it even if Megan Fox and Raphael have a hardcore scene together in the third act" crowd.

I doubt the movie will flop, I'm pretty sure that everyone is going to get hyped and that it will make big bucks at the box office.
I'm also sure that the movie is going to draw in a new crowd rather than older fans. They are probably aiming at the demographic that they just missed with the Nick cartoon show.
My biggest question is regarding the sequel. Will the movie make enough to be a franchise? And even if they decided to make a sequel, will people necessarily see it?
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this film makes its money back but that it gets enough complaints that the TMNT movie franchise will once again be shut down for retooling.

It's mostly trending because no one heard about it and 'this trailer came out of nowhere' so it's getting a lot of exposure due to the surprise factor.
Everyone I know either hated it, apologized to me cause they know I'm a tmnt fan, or can't look past bay, fox and those ugly ass turtles. It took me a while to convince them 'at least Leo looks bad as' but you know that's all gonna go to crap the moment he stops posing and opens his mouth.
This movie will barely break even. You're either in denial or just give the turtles too much credit. Lamest movie of the summer.
It’s not necessarily the fanbase that will push it to success; it’s the casuals and general audience. The TMNT brand is big the world over. Many people recognise it and know of it. This is a live-action film, too, which is a huge benefit that the CGI movie didn’t have in its favour. Sorry to say, but if no fans went to watch this film at all it would probably still end up being financially successful. I can see it underwhelming at the box-office if it’s really badly received (it will get utterly ravaged by critics, regardless), but I genuinely cannot see any scenario where this will completely flop. It will probably spawn at least one sequel.
Don’t underestimate an early August spot. Mid and late August, yes, but this is still early in the month. Summer will still be in full swing. Rise of the Planet of the Apes had the same spot (give or take a day or two), and it worked out very well for that.
I can’t see it making less than 100 million in North America. Doesn’t matter, though, and Paramount know it, because it will make the vast majority of its dough overseas.

I think it's more telling if you look at Michael Bay's produced horror movies remakes. Just look at what he did. He produced a remake for Texas Chainsaw massacre, made some money. First thing he did? Go for another remake (he did produce a prequel to Texas, but soon lost interest and left the franchise to be milked in other people's hands). He remade Friday the 13th. Lots of buzz behind it, since it was a remake. Barely any effort went into it. It made some money for them. A quick buck. But seeing as they had barely put any effort into it, nobody shouted for a sequel. Nobody cared. So they let the franchise die. What did they do next? Jump on a Nightmare on Elm Street remake. They knew there would be a lot more buzz behind that than a sequel to their awful remakes. Of course, the movie also turned out to be crap, made a quick buck, but not enough to get a sequel green lit. But they made money out of it. Fans went to see it. So did teenagers. That's all that mattered.
And now what's Michael Bay producing? Another quick buck. Another 80's revival (just like his horror remakes). And like it has been stated above, it's being released in a dead month. Sure, they'll make some money. But they'll soon follow the turtles with another 80's remake (He-man? Who knows). The buzz alone of a new remake is better for them than making an actual good movie and banking on a new franchise.
Transformers was different. It was actually produced by Spielberg, not Bay. And while Spielberg has produced some crap in his life, he's always know when he had a franchise on his hands.
Here, not so much.
Just look at Bay's track record as a producer. It's really not that hard to know where this is going. He's just exploiting people's nostalgia to make some quick money. Really. That's all there is to it. And he'll do it again and again. And just like fans of Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street or in this case Turtles, fans of future franchises he'll remake will fall for it. Again and again.

Every single of his films feels like it's on auto pilot, There's no emotional connection at all, he just sits there and watches people make a movie for him, he's an extra on his own set. One of the worst directors working today. ****, even Uwe Boll's better than him.

That is true. Jonathan Liebesman is pretty much just a clone of whatever director he needs to be for the project he works on. But always worse.
He was a Leterrier clone with his sequel to Clash. He was a Marcus Niepel (?) clone for his awful Texas prequel. He was a mix between Spielberg's War of the worlds and Bay's Transformers for his Battle L.A. And now he has fully embrace the Bay look for his Turtles movie. There's definitely a pattern here.
Just like every other franchise I loved that Michael Bay has gotten his hands on.
I never thought it would flop, I just know it will be a bastardized mockery of something I grew up loving.

I feel pretty good about this movie's chances. The trailer seemed to go over well. It was trending on Facebook and twitter. I heard two grown men talking about it in the paint store today. "You know it's gonna be good, 'cause it's Michael Bay."
I can't accept TMNT 2007 as any kind of gauge. I've looked too many people in the face, and watched them dismiss the film the moment they found out it was animated. They shrug it off like it doesn't matter at all.
Same is true for the cartoons. I mean, we're here. We still love TMNT, even though most of us are, at least, teenagers. But most people don't grow up through their teens and into adulthood, continuing to watch cartoons of the stuff they liked as a child. Transformers has had a hundred cartoons since they came out. Like TMNT, Batman, Spider-Man, it's pretty much always been on TV. But the movies - that's when people get excited, like, "Hey, I used to love that thing, and it's coming back!" For a lot of adults, this is the first TMNT thing since the 90's that will even catch their attention.

What I think is first of all, if the studio had confidence with this movie, would they not put it somewhere in May or June or July? Nope. There are a lot of movies coming that would crush it.
It'll make money sure. In the first weekend you'll get the people curious about it, the people that remember TMNT as a kid, and then after that it'll be done. I doubt it will make all the money back they put into the movie and with movies today even if you break even, it's considered a failure.
There's buzz for it right now because of the teaser, but even that will fizzle out quickly.

the site admin for ninjapizza.net made a comment years ago when it first announced that Michael Bay would be producing, that went along the lines of Bay having a history of making summer blockbusters, and propelling the turtles back into spotlight would be a great thing...

I think its still up in the air if the the movie will end up a flop or not because there's too may variables at the moment. Youtube veiws don't automatically translate into ticket sells it just shows people were interested in the trailer. A lot of that interest could have come from how under the radar the movie had been until now. Its also hard to guage reaction to that trailer from the internet because for every person who took the time to comment how many didn't or just flat out don't care? You have to take into account that kids will be going back to school meaning tired parents likely trying to conserve funds plus there's no telling kids will want to see it anyway considering the redesigns of the turtles. What I can see happening right now is for it to have a pretty good or even great opening thanks to super dedicated fans and curious nostalgics but where it goes from there will depend on word of mouth and the reaction to gaurdians of the galaxy.

Nope...Sam's right. The highest grossing foreign market was Japan (according to BoxOfficeMojo.com)
Japan: $8,451,374
Russia: $806,408
BUT....the domestic gross was still higher than the Japanese numbers with $9,362,785. 84% of its receipts may have been from foreign ticket sales....but America still had the highest box office performance of any market.

It just amazes me how he spins that gross for Japan. If nobody looked it up, you would assume it raked in a whole bunch of money. See how Japan wasn't upset over the abomination that was Dragonball Evolution, so we should enjoy what looks like it's going to be a steaming turd of a TMNT film.

This. With Bay, Fox, military wank, explosions, & a property fondly remembered, no matter how bad it is to many core fans, it will succeed.

I ... kind of do. With the trailer out, now more than ever.
Keep in mind "flop" is a relative term with big-budget studio action movies. It'll definitely recoup its costs (even Warner Brothers'/DC's well known "failure," Green Lantern, turned a profit in the end) but I don't think it'll perform the gangbusters numbers a tentpole summer movie needs to keep getting studio support, sequels, etc. Reaction has been pretty muted, the trailer's generic and audiences are past the point of flocking in large numbers to reboots/comic-book movies just for the novelty.
But we'll see.

Between the 2 most watched posts on youtube it's over 12million views now in just over a day. To compare with the most watched days of future past video release 3 days ago with alost 10 million views this all looks good for tmnt being seen out there which should ultimately lead to more ticket sales in theory. I for one want this film to do extremely well so that perhaps we might get an arkham style tmnt game or at least one with real development and care. The film isn't shown with a rating yet on the official site and that may influence things. PG would be best but M will do just as well to let the children see it too. Many little children will want to see this being fans of the new nick show and I'm sure the movie will be promoted along side the new shows since this is a nickelodeon movie as stated in the preview. Therefore I'm thinking the better the rating for younger children the better. The movie is done but maybe it will be edited further once submitted for a rating to make it a PG film. The Bluray release should then come with heaps more footage and make for a more awesome film. Just my thoughts atm.

Not all countries have the same rating system, and due to the fact that he stuck an M in his post, he's probably from Australia. It might very well be a PG over there, which would be very similar to our PG-13 here.

It's PG13...
All the better. It will be interesting to see how it stacks up against, Captain America, Xmen and spiderman this year. Even if it does better than all of those movies it will be the numbers attending the screenings that matter most. With cinemas getting less customers in general thanks to the perks of the net it will be something to watch to get a good idea of just how things are going with the movie industry. Obviously things are going well enough to make movies as mentioned above and turn a profit.
PG 13 is a lot more mature than PG was over 20 years ago so I'm sure it can be more serious than the original films.

I wonder how mature. Like, can we at least get some blood on Leo's blades for once? Maybe see Raphael break someone's neck with his bare hands? Maybe Mikey could be caught reading a playboy?

I don't watch PG13 films a lot, that I'm aware of. So I don't know how mature in terms of the content they can be or are allowed to be. Blood I'm guessing would be a no no and isn't really that necessary. Mikey reading playboy - maybe. Leo never cuts up people though in the shows, in the comics though that another thing. I think the old cartoon approach has had a lot of influence here so I'm not expecting that much mature content. Maybe if someone can find the most extreme PG13 movie and let us know we might get an idea for the most we could expect.
Has Michael Bay ever had a movie flop?
If not, then I'm feeling all the better for the tmnt franchise into the future.
Even if he has he has obviously done well in more recent times regardless of opinions. The transformers success speaks for itself in terms of money and I'm sure he's back another winner with tmnt and all the toys etc.

Yes, The Island is his first and only real flop to date (shame, that was actually a pretty decent movie) As for the stuff I asked, uh, blood is allowed in PG-13 films, just not gushing, just watch LOTR and see how brutal those battles are, and we do get to see blood and some hard core fighting. Jaws has some really graphic scenes in it, and it's only PG. Same with Jurassic Park (we see a severed arm in it) and the whole movie is very frightening for little kids.
I'm pretty sure that's not gonna happen. Maybe some blood. But Raph breaking someone's neck or Mikey reading playboy? Doubt it. Oh, playboy reading and alluding is allowed in PG-13 flicks, Stan Lee made an appearance as Hugh Hefner in Ironman, and the 1980's flick, Adventure in Babysitting had a plot line revolving around a Playboy magazine, Home Alone, which was PG, had 8year old Kevin looking at a Playboy, and even Transformers alluded that Sam had a playboy stash he was trying to hide.
As for broken necks, I'll go back to LOTR. Gimli and Aragorn both broke some serious necks in those PG-13 flicks. And oh, forgot, The Bourne flicks, lots of broken necks in those too!

Shame about the island too. But with big name franchises I think Michael Bay is handling them well from a turning a profit view. Even if it did flop I'm sure toy sales etc tied in with the movie and the NDS game that is supposedly on it's way I'm sure Michael Bay has covered himself to turn over a good return for the studios and his money I guess.

Yeah Mikey can be quite the surprise like in that episode with his tightie whities, lol. At heart I think he's always seen himself as just a regular guy doing what everyone else enjoys except that he's a tmnt. I thought the end of the preview demonstrated that perfectly and is exactly Mikey. So long as the marketing etc keeps the right momentum then we should expect this film to do well. The preview has been more watched more quickly than any other movie coming out this year, particularly the super types. T4 hasn't even been that watched on youtube given it's time a few weeks ago and that film will surely do well financially.

Michaelangelo is the fun-loving turtle. He lives to enjoy life. He tends to hang out with Raphael rather than Leonardo or Donatello because they're too serious for him. He has a gentle, though mischievous nature and is not above playing practical jokes. He reads comics and science fiction and likes to sneak into movie theaters to watch the latest films. In short, he enjoys practicing his ninja skills, but also enjoys just fooling around. Michaelangelo also likes to cook and it is he who prepares most of the turtle's meals. In many ways he is the hedonist and a sensualist, appreciative of pleasures of the flesh.

Right, but pleasures of the flesh aren't just sexual or perverted. (though those ARE fun ones). Both those terms in the most basic sense mean someone who seeks to get the most pleasure out of life. Which actually seems like it'd be very Mikey.

Just my opinion. So don't freak out.
I doubt this will even make $100 million in the US. Even the Robocop remake made less then $60 million in the US and that's a popular brand name too (that had people 'watching the trailer tons of times on youtube').
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but being 'big on youtube' doesn't = Box Office Hit.
Do people forget that the last Turtles film made what...$50 to $55 million tops in the US? (just looked it up, only $54 million in the US...and only a total of about $95 million worldwide. And that had more 'Positivity' before the flick came out than this film does.)
Plus, it doesn't have the novelty of "well, there's never been a live action version of these guys before, so let's see how they do it" since there's already being 3 live action films that people can already check out. Even the Transformers flicks had that novelty for people to see them.
If it gets lucky, it might be saved by overseas. But I doubt it'll do well, and I would bet money that it won't get a sequel (they'll put it in the 'box office disappointment' pile and move on.)
I mean seriously, people are going "well Transformers became a hit and got sequels, so the Turtles are a sure thing?"
I'm sure some people said the same thing about Green Lantern (since Thor and Iron Man were other comic book films based on the 'lower Totem Pole of Super Heroes', became big hits, and got sequels/franchises)...but it didn't work out for Green Lantern.
But hey, it can always be one of those 'surprises.' If I'm wrong? Big whoop.
And on a sidenote, I didn't bother watching the trailer. So I don't know how 'good/bad' it is or what it looks like. Like I said before, I'm not going to bother to check it the film out when it comes out (and no, not even torrents. I just like reading reactions, the arguments, and fighting and stuff.)
All I know is that over a dozen people that I talk to told me about the trailer (since they know I do love the Turtles characters.) Only 1 person liked it, and the others told me it was god awful.
I didn't look at the 'new looks' from the teaser (or avatars people have on here). Just pretty much skipped through them.
I know one buddy told me Mikey looks like 'if Gene Simmons took his Kiss make-up off' which is all I needed to hear.
And from what I understand, they aren't Ninjas anymore (as in the Stealthy/Sneaky kind.) Hopefully they can at least, I don't know, have Martial Arts in the film instead of the filmmakers going "hey, I saw the Avengers. People loved the Hulk. We need a Hulk! Hey, we got a Hulk Now! Not just one, but FOUR! Just let them throw these guys around."

I doubt this will even make $100 million in the US. Even the Robocop remake made less then $60 million in the US and that's a popular brand name too (that had people 'watching the trailer tons of times on youtube').I seriously doubt that Robocop got as much buzz or more view then TMNT will, and it wasn't as well known to a general audience the originals were rated R, and p-13(for the less popular movies) and so they were appealing for those of a young age. so thus most individuals did not grow up with robocop. Where as TMNT is something hundreds of thousands of fans.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but being 'big on youtube' doesn't = Box Office Hit.
but traffic and socat networking together is a good sign and TMNT is trending. on face book twitter and you tube view which is very good and very similar to that of what GOTG got when it released if trailer Offically.
Do people forget that the last Turtles film made what...$50 to $55 million tops in the US? (just looked it up, only $54 million in the US...and only a total of about $95 million worldwide. And that had more 'Positivity' before the flick came out than this film does.)
Last TMNT movie riding to Coat tails of a declining fans base and show that we become not so popular.
THis movie is essentially apart of a second coming of TMNT new show in the peaks of it's fandom, in all areas
Plus, it doesn't have the novelty of "well, there's never been a live action version of these guys before, so let's see how they do it" since there's already being 3 live action films that people can already check out. Even the Transformers flicks had that novelty for people to see them.
but it does have the novelty of this is the first time CGI full body capture, mean awesome choreography and great martial arts. and a more realistic looking turtle.
If it gets lucky, it might be saved by overseas. But I doubt it'll do well, and I would bet money that it won't get a sequel (they'll put it in the 'box office disappointment' pile and move on.)
I serioulsy doubt this in every way. I seriously think some poeple are seriously under estimating this new movie.
I mean seriously, people are going "well Transformers became a hit and got sequels, so the Turtles are a sure thing?" I agree that this doesn't make it a certainty, but there are tone of people right know that are super excited for this movie and with more press coming things should only pick up.
I'm sure some people said the same thing about Green Lantern (since Thor and Iron Man were other comic book films based on the 'lower Totem Pole of Super Heroes', became big hits, and got sequels/franchises)...but it didn't work out for Green Lantern.

I seriously doubt that we could accurately asses that from this trailer we definitely get ninjutsu aspects, nothing in this trailer felt out of place in the tmnt world many aspect harken back to 2k3 turtles
and while they are large i seriously think people are totally over exaggerating their size, a comparison to April while they are larger width wise, they are not that much taller megan fox, shes 5'4", same height as my wife and im 6'2" and her head comes to about my chest so I'm guessing mikey is at least 6'2", which mean donnie will be at most 6'9 6'10" and while that is tall for a TMNT its not for a human.

Uh, Robocop is no where near the popularity of the TMNT. No where near it. Not even close. And, officially, the reboot of the TMNT started in 2012, not this year. TMNT is already a 400 million dollar a year empire.
Original films release dates and budgets.
TMNT: March 30-90 - Budget 13.5 million - U.S Box office $201,965,915.
TMNT II:March 22-91 - Budget $25 million - U.S Box office $78,656,813.
TMNT III:March 17-93 - Budget $21 million - U.S Box office $42,273,609.
TMNT IIII: March 23-07 - Budget $34 million - U.S Box Office $95,608,995.
New TMNT: August 8-14 - Budget $125 million - U.S Box office ??????.

The critics never like the TMNT, period. Not one movie is well received by them. Most of the time, they just can't see outside of the box, unless one of their darlings (like Scorsese, Spielberg, Abrahms, Whedon) is at the helm.
Expect this latest movie to get blasted, just on Michael Bay being attached to it alone. But they never could digest giant mutant Turtles that fight crime.

Critically speaking,I feel that the movie will get mixed reactions from movie critics but with the consensus being that it's a bad movie overall. As for it's box office performance,I unfortunately feel that it will fail to actually make some dough. I can't see it making much money due to movie theaters wanting money, the production budget needing to be covered, and insufficient interest/pathetic word of mouth. Oh and then there is the fee for marketing, advertising, and prints as well. I want the movie to do good enough business, but only for a selfish reason, that selfish reason is that so I can see certain stuff in a TMNT movie that has never been in one before.

but it does have the novelty of this is the first time CGI full body capture, mean awesome choreography and great martial arts. and a more realistic looking turtle.

And my assumption is they're going to act more like 'Incredible Hulks/Transformers' and less like 'Ninjas with actual Martial Art skills'. Let alone that silly 'Raid Redemption-type fight scenes' quote that Kevin Eastman said long ago.

Obviously the makers of the new Robocop felt otherwise to invest over $100 million into the film while releasing it in February of all times. And I still stand by what I posted.
And they do stupid things all of the time. Disney stuck in over 250 million into The Lone Ranger, when there hasn't been a demand for westerns, in like ages. But, the TMNT is still more popular than Robocop, so I still see this thing making some dough.

firstly, that trailer is way better than i thought it'd be, tho...yeah...white shredder is still at the back of my mind as wack as hell.
i think the idea that people aren't aware of the trailer, as a few posters have mentioned, isn't too true. at least from what i've seen, news about the trailer premiering was EVERYWHERE the past week. online, on the news...it seems to have the hype machine behind it.
and saying that it'll flop, because if people really cared about the franchise, then the '07 flick woulda done better, isn't necessarily the best way to gauge the potential popularity of this movie. granted i'm just one guy and its not like i did a huge survey of people all around the country or whatever, but a lot of the people at my job were talking about it. i'm 30, and they're all around my age (between 25-35) and they were hyped. they're obviously not hard cores privy to the knowledge we are regarding the script issues, casting issues, production and crew issues...they just know its a live-action, megan fox-starring, action-filled movie with michael bay's name attached to it. they know transformers was "good" (for them, maybe not hard core transformers fans) and so this appeals to them, which is GREAT for the franchise. and them, i guess.
i brought up the '07 flick and all of them pretty much either said they didnt see it or even knew it existed.
why?
'07 is "CG for kids".
this "isn't". (if you get my meaning)
i think this movie should be based on its own merits. comparing it to something else (before it comes out and in regards to whether it'll be a hit or not) is a lost cause, because nothing that came before it really has any relevance to the franchise's future.
as for the points about it being released in august, in the hollywood graveyard, someone made a point about rise of the planet of the apes. that was a good call and i recall reading somewhere that because august and january are sh!t months for movies, studios have begun experimenting with putting higher profile flicks there to capitalize on all that empty movie real estate. apes is a great example of this, and it makes me think the studio has so much confidence in the movie that they're going for the same type of success.
i dunno, i've always said we should wait n see before judging, but i know this the internet, and we are part of what is arguably the most volatile and divided fandom out there. (part of the reason i dont come here as often as i used to.)
whatevs. i know a cool trailer doesnt always translate to a good movie, but imo, so far so good.
:ohwell:
oh, and to flat out refuse to watch the trailer or movie, yet still feel you can have a valid opinion, is stupid.
don't be stupid.

It's going to flop. Once the reviews come in (and this movie will get destroyed by critics, especially since it'll be compared to Marvel movies), and negative word of mouth comes around, it won't do well.
I don't even think kids who are growing up with the Nick show will ask their parents to take them to see this, since it looks so drastically different than the "cute" turtles they see on TV.
I think any 7 year old would be horrified to this movies turtles, especially if they've only seen the cute Nick TMNT.

This is so true, but instead of 7, this was an 8 year old girl who absolutely loves Nick Mikey, but is horrified by what she saw in the teaser.
But sometimes, over negativity might bring in the curious factor, to see how bad it really is.

i think at this point, the level of quality of the marvel movies have reached has put them on a level where reviewers/critics know not a lot of genre fare can't really compare. those flicks have directors with real pedigree, where its obvious that this is in the hands of a couple of "bro's". the budget's don't compare and the writer's and director aren't of the highest class, either.

when i was 7, it didn't bother me that the movie universe didn't mesh with the toon-iverse. i was just blown away by the fact the turtles were "REAL".

I just got done looking at the Official TMNT you tube channel, and so far i see very little negative to the mostly positive comments.
Plenty wanted a more realistic looking mutant turtle are you kidding me, tons, Deviants art and Tumblr are all evidence to that much.
I basing this off of what i saw in the trailer which fix almost perfectly in tone and action and stunts tot he 2k3 turtle leo doing a somersault is definitely a ninjutsu move, Add to the fact that they have Awesome people working in the stunt department of this movie, Great martial artist, and such, SO me is a huge indicator of there being fights and choreography.

I honestly have no idea. I'd like it to be successful because it's Turtles. But as to whether or not it'll flop... That's anyone's guess. I don't have a good feeling about its success because of being released a week after GOTG and all that. Turtles might do alright though. I really think it's going to make more money than expected. Maybe not uber amounts, but it'll probably make enough to have sequels green-lit. Who knows? It might bring in a truck load.

Whats funny is that people keep saying that August is a dead month for movies, and movies released during that time are the ones the studio has no faith in, etc, etc. basically its akin to releasing a movie in January.
But then you look at the list TrickorTreater mentioned, and its like whoa, look at all the heavy hitters coming out that late in the summer. Now granted they all, minus GotG have previous movies with preexisting fan-bases to draw from, but August is still a great month, and all the marketing that will start (hopefully) now that the teaser was released leading up to the 30th Anniversary of the Turtles - I don't think that even a 'bad' movie is gonna fail financially.

It will if it has bad word of mouth.
Those three movies could very much potentially chip away huge chunks of box office revenue for this movie.
And, historically, August very much is a dead month. Same with February.
Had it stayed in its June spot prior to the August push:
Had it stuck to its original June 6, 2014 release date, Ninja Turtles would have opened only a week after Disney and Pixar's The Good Dinosaur (May 30) and two weeks before Fox and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 2 (June 20)
As well as TF4 coming out June 25th.
I think they pretty much had no choice at all but to stick it there and hope to christ people aren't sick of big summer action movies by then.
Not to mention, August is around when school starts again. After a summer of 10+ dollar movies, budgets will tighten for school supplies.
That one plays less of a factor, but still one to take note of.

If they market it to little kids as much as possible, it has a shot. Particularly fans of the Nick show.
Even if it did look good (and it doesn't), the 25 and up crowd that grew up with TMNT is the same demographic that will have already seen movies like Cap 2, Spidey 2, X-Men, Godzilla, Trans4mers etc.
And let's not forget Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm a flat-out TMNT "brand loyalist", but it's gonna be hard to go to the theaters August 8th and not go see GOTG for a second time.

The film might make it's budget back, but it certainly won't be an uber hit. It'll rank #2 at the box office at the most.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Expendables 3 are the only August films I see taking money away from TMNT. TMNT will hold it's own against GOTG as the general public know who TMNT are as opposed to GOTG.
Now as for July films taking some away...
Hercules looks like a flop and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be the the theaters for 3weeks by the time TMNT comes out.

I'll say this honestly, and I know my opinion might be a bit blunt, but take it for what it is...
If people take their kids to see this thinking it's a kids' movie, then they are IDIOTS. It's a Bay movie. Bay movies are rarely truly for kids, typically they have some pretty racy stuff or things involving 'content not suitable for kids.' Transformers had this, and yet some people still insisted it was a 'kid's movie.'
Just because it had some stuff marketed to kids, doesn't mean the movie is itself. Do most people think it's A-OK to have their kids watching Megan Fox making out with Shia or watching Shia give his creepy rape-face while there are long panning shots over Megan's sweaty half-clothed body? The sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen continued with the first's in having toys marketed to kids, but a lot of the movie stuff was grossly inappropriate for them, especially once you got to the drug scenes and seeing Devastator's 'testicles' and dogs humping.
I have a feeling that this movie isn't going to be any different, and will that be really any surprise? Bay movies are little more then explosions, boobies, and putting any non-human characters last in importance to anything that involves a boy bedding some hot chick. To me that isn't anything near a kid's movie. That's more something fit for older teens.
TMNT is cooler than MOTU

So you've never seen the Matrix, 300, Saving Private Ryan, Bridesmaids, Blazing Saddles or the Godfather?:o
Bro, you are totally missing out. Get outta Utah and pop in some good movies!
Also, I doubt it'll flop. It'll probably end up breaking even though because of the TMNT brand recognition. But if the movie has terrible word-of-mouth, it might have a big opening weekend and a huge dropoff for subsequent weekends. To add to this, August releases RARELY gross more than $200 million. It's only happened four times within the past 20 years.

I think it will flop by Michael Bay standards.
There is still just real venom out there after Bay tried to make them aliens, it may have been changed by fan revolt, but Bay lost a lot of potential viewers for this movie back when he told fans and critics of the original concept that they were laughably paranoid about new things. Cause it turns out those fans won in the end.
Now there's no way those fans will still decide to line Bay's pockets after he essentially tried to bastardize the source material. It's sad they had to put that this movie was from "Nickelodeon Productions", clearly trying to bring the kids and fans of the Nick cartoon to see this, cause they know the kids will be what makes or breaks this movie.
Many say kids are smart these days, hopefully they will be smart enough to know that this has nothing to do with the show.
150-180 million in NA sounds about right.

While it wasn't a hit it did well enough to be the number one movie in the US for what? 2 or 3 weeks? And that was in March. The movie itself just wasn't that great.
August isn't a terrible time, not as bad as January or February.
It'll break even at the very least, but I won't be surprised if its a big hit either.

What's the budget for this movie, $100 million? I think this movie will pull about $150 million in the U.S. and maybe another 250-300 million in foreign markets which would put it into profit territory and easily greenlight a sequel. This movie will probably be on par (performance wise) with the G.I. Joe films. i'd bet on it.

I seriously doubt that Robocop got as much buzz or more view then TMNT will, .
you are either very young, never watched tv in february, never went on youtube or never walked past a gamestop
or have no idea what you are talking about.
Gamestop Employee here....Robocop was the talk of the month, the trailer played during the 15 minute loops on the tv all stores have
will the movie flop? define flop...its not the same term it once meant....will it make money back sure, but i highly doubt it will be a huge box office movie..remember what comes out around the same time? Guardians of the Galaxy and that is the US

trailer views/ youtube views does not equal movie quality or established franchise fans or critics of box office dollars or general public views..or ticket sales
to anyone that doesnt know, every time you re watch the trailer it counts as a view ( was/am youtube partner before the stupid change) ..so lets say it has 512 views and you watched it 100 times....in reality it only has 413 views, if those 413 where all one person...but chances are like most of you say you watched way more than 10 times ( i know i did) so that number gets smaller
and no youtube does not take same IP addresses into account...a view is a view no matter what

Seeing the Marvel logo spin into focus before every GotG teaser will be a HUGE boon.
The trailer was a huge hit for at least 2 days, showing up on tv shows like @Midnight(which is a great show check it out) and premiering on Kimmel.
The sheer weirdness of how it looks, combined with a great trailer, talent attached to it, and the Marvel brand?
It'll be a force to be reckoned with.

I think it will be a success
The first Transformers film made 70m it's first weekend in the summer of 2007.
I think this film will comfortably top 50m, maybe even pass the 70m mark of the first transformers.
I would adjust my estimate based on competition, i'm not totally sure what is coming out the same weekend (or what is released in the weekend or two before it) -- those are big factors as well.

Yeah, I know that's me. I'm sure Expendables has done well if it's on number 3. I was just saying me, personally, I have no interest. I haven't seen all the inter-related Avengers movies. I like The Avengers well enough and the Ironman movies for the most part~ I think I've seen one other related, but you can pretty much understand the plot without having to see everything (I tend to start books in the middle anyway).
Oh!! xD Hahahah!! $2.50 is the "dollar" theater, where the releases go after they've been out for about a month or two right before DVD release (or maybe they are on DVD by that point) but if you wanna see it on the big screen, you can go and pay $2.50 and it's like a regular theater, just not recently released movies. Exactly. It's also nice if you wanna have the "cinematic" experience but not shell out so much cash. Good for families, too! Mine is only about fifteen minutes away. A lot of the cheap theaters have gotten shut down esp in smaller towns. They were so popular when I was in middle school. I wish there were more of them!

But, more than likely, then the younger audience will buy tickets to TMNT and sneak into the other movies. R-rated flicks just don't do as well as the PG-13 flicks. (Which sucks, because I would love an R-Rated TMNT one day, but I know I'll never see that happen.)

meh ive never seen the appeal of a franchise making rated R movie when it isnt really scene as one...ratings are so different than they where it doesnt even matter anymore
what it will be more violent? more swears?...pg 13 movies can be violent enough
and you can drop and f bomb in any pg 13 movie without context once ,3 times in context before it gets an R rating

What's wrong with a TMNT that has raw violence and language? We've had to put up with R-Rated franchises being turned into PGp13 flare, so why not something the opposite? And anyways, last year I saw so many kids who tried to get in to see Kick Ass 2, but the managers were there waiting and asking for tickets and ID's!

For proper martial arts action scenes. The fact that they could actually show mikey swinging is nunchuka and hitting someone with them. No swears needed or brutal kill bill type bloodshed, just straight up martial arts no holding back with limits. 8)

ok but why cant we see that in a pg13 movie? non of that screams rated R...this isnt 1990
ratings have vastly changed
plus that isnt michelangelos thing...his chucks are more of a tool he uses to help him pull off other moves

Well, I'd like to see a TMNT on the level of Kick Ass, the hard core killing that Hit Girl and Big Daddy do, and the swearing and all, I think it would work great with the TMNT.

but aside from once comic they have never been like that, and the 2k3 series had leo take of shredders head...on screen..sure he was a robot but we didnt know that the second he did it
the turtles hardly ever Kill
but even then Kick ass and TMNT are not the same style...they are vastly different what works for one doesnt work for the other

Well, I disagree, the TMNT and Kickass worlds are actually quite interchangeable if one was to step back and take a look. Both were parodies of other comic book heroes, and hell, Hitgirl is literally an algorithm of all of the Turtles.
And why are you so against an R-rated TMNT flick, when it's never going to happen anyway? Let us R-Rated fanboys/girls have this fantasy, OK!

Well, I think it would be hilarious to see Casey Jones give the boys a surprise 21st birthday party by taking them to a strip club. I think the look on Leo and Donnie's face would be priceless!
And, I just like very hard core violence like we saw in Kick Ass. I'd like to see Raphael throw his sai and to see it land in a man's chest, on screen. I'd like to see Leo get sliced by a sword and bleed, then shrug it off and whack the guy's head off with his blade. I'd like to hear the expletives Casey is sure to say when he sees the Turtles for the first time. Mikey to make jokes that are not PG friendly! Donnie, eh, I can't think of anything for him.

Other than that classic Shredder scene... the Turtles don't really run around cutting off people's arms or slicing their heads off. I will give you Raph stabbing people though.
We do need to see the hits actually connect. Let's see that staff smack someone's tooth out, a nunchuck rock a dude's noggin, as well as Leo slicing people across the chest, Raph stabbing someone with his sais, and throwing stars that actually stab people in the chest, arms, legs, whatever.

I think any 7 year old would be horrified to this movies turtles, especially if they've only seen the cute Nick TMNT.

movie ratings are not what they used to be, times change and things change
even different cultures have different ratings for things
alot of kids my age grew up watching rated R movies but as stated we knew the difference ,also most of the time those R movies were extreme fantastical stories or comedies
think of it this way..a pg or even pg-13 movie in the 80's early 90s alot of times had exposed boobs and no one thought twice about it

Pah, some minds are just weak and can't handle the real world. People blaming violent tvs, games and films are laughable nitwits.
The real world is not all fluff and cotton candy like. Parents who shield/overprotective on their children are just doing more harm than good, they should be able to view what the hell they want when they're ready. Hell kids play Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty all the time.

I don't agree with that at all.......why do people think it's weak for parents to shield kids from violence/adult things? kids could and are influenced by those things.
My sister and I snuck Grand Theft Auto in when we were kids.....and once we started playing we started trying to fight each other for real....one time we went too far and we almost hurt each other....it's funny cause when that happened we decided that maybe the game was a bad influence on us....and WE broke the game, not our parents...we broke the game ourselves. It felt right when we did that. We stopped rough housing too.
those things do influence kids, people can say they don't but they really do. Kids absorb everything, and if they are exposed to more violent things they will absorb more of that. Some kids understand right from wrong really well (like you for example)....but other kids aren't as fast and these are the kids that could learn the wrong things. (like me and my sister)

Yeah like I said, some kids can't handle it, they're still weak and easily influenced by bad things.
But some others who are ready doesn't need that kind of protectiveness. Some people like me and many others. I never had the urge to shoot up a school after having a gunfight in the mall on GTA. well...how are parents going to know the "weak" kids as you call them from the fast learning kids? how are they going to know which can or can not understand right from wrong quickly?
they can't right? so that's why playing it safe and shielding kids from bad influences is a reasonable route to take.

With Michael Bay's name attached, I doubt this movie will totally flop. People will see it in droves because of the trailer and Bay's name being shown. They'll take their kids to see it also. I'll see it once with my BF, but if we both think it sucks, we won't be bothering with it.
It depends on how you define flop. But I do except the film to underperform. I'm betting it will have a huge drop off in it's second week.

That question's mighty presumptuous, because a lot of us never thought it would flop, capitalistically speaking. Between the fans of the new cartoon, people who watch lowest-common-denominator action movies, and the type of old fans who will watch anything TMNT-related, people there will be a big enough audience for this film to make a profit. What we've been skeptical about is its quality.

I believe it was Warhorse who showed the teaser to younger siblings or cousins and she said they were terrified of the Turtles they saw and refused to look at it again.
Viacom are obviously planning these movies for the demographics they missed with the Nick show. This is not for the 4-10 year old demographic. This is for the 13-28 demographic (which is why Will Arnett and Megan Fox are in the film to begin with).
PG-13 is my limit.
I'm glad this turtle movie is going to be around that range.
PG-13 can still be pretty brutal. The MPAA is a lot more easy going for the big companies then they are for the smaller companies.
If any of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movies would have been independently produced instead of made by Bruckheimer and Disney, they would have gotten a hard R.
The Avengers also got a lot of breaks that other movies wouldn't have gotten.
He will make it so horrible that it will fail at the box office and the rights will go to someone else and then in 15 years we might get a proper movie
Viacom spent a lot of money getting the TMNT rights. They are not going to lose or sell the rights anytime soon. Worst case scenario: The movie flops and five years later we get a reboot that has nothing to do with the Bay film.
Bjarni

what does rated R TMNT give us that pg 13 TMNT wont?
It would simply mean that the producers were more interested in making the movie then being worried about meeting the standards of the MPAA.
Avengers was originally an R-Rating until they changed the impaling scene.
I don't think we should force anyone to make an R-Rated TMNT movie. Just like I don't think we should force anyone to make a PG-13 TMNT movie. They should just make a movie and then get it rated, like people did it back in the day. Rather then always going back and forth with the MPAA and cutting stuff down.

To answer the question posed by the title, I've never really expected this film to flop. It's likely to be poorly received by critics. As far as box office goes, I expect it to make enough money to be profitable, but not enough to warrant a sequel. We'll probably hear buzz about a planned sequel while the film is still in theaters that will never actually come to fruition.
However, with this film having done so little promotion so far, I think it's extremely difficult to make any sort of predictions. I'm mostly going by guy feeling at this point.
Viacom are obviously planning these movies for the demographics they missed with the Nick show. This is not for the 4-10 year old demographic. This is for the 11-15 demographic (which is why Will Arnett and Megan Fox are in the film to begin with).
I mean, I think it's pretty obvious what demographic they're aiming for with this movie, and it's the exact same demographic they aimed the Transformers series at - 20-to-30-somethings who have fond but vague memories of the '80s cartoon and like "big" explosive action in the Michael Bay style.
They're not making this movie for fans, new or old. This movie is not for "us". And I'm not saying that's a "bad" decision, per se - they're trying to tap into whatever market they think will bring in the most money. It's a business decision, full stop.
Of course, I wish they had looked to the Marvel Studios method as a blueprint instead, where there's a lot of care and focus on respecting the source material as much as possible and trying to bring that to life as well as they can while also making it easily accessible and enjoyable for a wide audience. They know exactly how to make their movies rewarding to damn near absolutely everyone. The Bay nostalgia movies tend to be much more divisive (though nonetheless successful).

Well said. I think Marvel does a great job of walking the line between satisfying fans while aiming for the most marketable audience. Bay isn't as concerned with satisfying fans, and just aims to give that target audience everything they want. That's a big reason I'm not convinced this movie will flop. It's angering plenty of fans, but people who don't give a damn one way or the other have no reason not to see it. In the unlikely event this film does flop, it's a lot more likely to be due to Liebesman's directing than Bay's involvement.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not absolving Bay of his involvement with the film, but Bay has a habit of making the sort of decisions that piss off lots of fans, but ultimately don't make a huge impact on the general audience's reaction, like putting flames on Optimus. He's extremely skilled at making big, loud, turn-off-your-brain action movies, and that's why he's able to be so hated and so successful at the same time. I remember being disappointed to hear Black Sails was a Treasure Island prequel (because I am so tired of Treasure Island being remade countless times) until I realized that Bay was involved, at which point I realized the show wouldn't be concerned at all with its connection to the source material and instead focus on being an exciting pirate show. And that's exactly what we got. While Bay may like to fix what isn't broken, he'll do everything in his power to make sure the film is exciting and action-packed. Bay is likely the reason behind most of the decisions that anger existing fans, but he's also going to be the one behind whatever success this film finds.
Liebesman, on the other hand, isn't quite as good with this formula. He manages to get the big, loud, turn-off-your-brain aspects down, but the excitement is missing, and the underlying boredom just makes it all become pretty obnoxious. I'm not as familiar with his work as I am Bay's, but I've seen about 3 of his films and they all felt like a crappy imitation of Bay's style. I think this film's financial success is going to largely depend on how heavily Bay is involved. If Bay really has as big a pull in this film as the marketing seems to indicate, it won't suffer at the box office. If Liebesman was the main guy calling the shots, it will probably have a pretty weak performance.

Based on rumors, there's going to be some references to the 1987 cartoon (more so than anything else). Seeing that Viacom bought the entire franchise, it might be that the Paramount guys asked the Platinum Dunes guys to at least use that universe as a starting off point.
I think that's the main difference in the Platinum Dunes movies and movies from companies like Marvel. When you hear a name like Jasper Sitwell in Captain America 2, even when the character is nothing like the comic book counterpart, you are aware that the name was put there for the fans to get something to smirk about. While any reference you get in a Transformers movie or seeing Vern as a character in this film, is more thrown in not as a goof, but just because they don't want to bother coming up with new names themselves.
I don't know if you've seen the cast listing on IMDb, but Whoopi Goldberg is credited as Burnette, which I doubt is true. I doubt they would try to hold on to that character identity while still doing something so completely different with that character. And it's not like there is anyone who is going to be seeing this film solely because it has Burne in it.

I'm aware Whoopi is in the movie and that she is playing April's boss. But I doubt they are actually calling her Burnette or Burnadette.
I remember a lot of Transformers names floating around during the 07 movie's production. Like Sam was actually called Spike and his friend was called Chip.
But, after three Transformers movies, Sam was never referred to as Spike.
So, I doubt Whoopi will actually be called Burnadette in the actual film. And we will see a correction right before or after the premiere. Obviously, I could be wrong. It's just a guess.
Just like I doubt Will Arnett is going to go out of his way to channel the 1987 incarnation of the character in his performance, outside of maybe wearing a pink shirt in one scene.

Yeah, that shaky cam could be a killer for me. It's a fad I wish would just die. I find that fad more horrible than the coverting all of the movies to 3D just to make an extra buck or two.
its funny when i went to film school, shaky cam and lens flare where big "No Nos" my professor drilled it in our heads to never even think to do that stuff as it was looked down upon in the film verse.
then star trek came out and that changed almost a year after i finished school
ow all these movies borrow from the shaky cam and flare idea, my class was taught as evil
But, after three Transformers movies, Sam was never referred to as Spike.
movie wise no, but on almost all cast lists and written materials he is referred to as Sam "Spike" Witwicky..so its one of those official unofficial things....something the fans would look at and say cool but the GA wont care about

Considering the way he's described the character in interviews doesn't sound much of anything like the character from the cartoon, I wouldn't even hold my breath for said pink shirt.

The same could be said of all the characters in this film...

Ooohhh, so that makes sense why so many movies today just out and outright suck. The directors/writers/producers and whatnot, they're film school rejects, and this country embraces rejects and rebels.

Fail upwards, the best way to advance to dangerous positions of authority and responsibility!
Hey, why go to all the trouble of planning, rehearsing and perfecting the art of cinematography and fight choreography when you can just shake the camera around and call it a day?
It's possible to use it "right", but most often the shaky-cam style is just covering for a lack of talent. It looks terrible and I'm tired of it.
