How Did You Become A TMNT Fan?

Hey, I was just wondering if there are any TMNT fans on these boards that are completely new to the franchise and got hooked by the new cartoon (or the new comics etc).

I'd also like to see how many got hooked by mirage vol. 1 (i know of one already . . . he has "Mirage Fan" under his name :wink: )

I'm going out on a limb that the majority got hooked from the original cartoon though :P

My big brother watched the first episode of the cartoon.. I guess he had been a fan of the comics, or somethin'. Anyway, I happened to watch it from then on. My first memory is the opening animation and theme song. The rest is history.

Two weeks later I was still watching it and buying the Archie comic series, and 6 months later I was getting the Mirage comics. Then the movie came out.

I suppose it was the original cartoon series. I remember watching that show all the time when it was on CBS. I had the toys and was in the fan club (still have the membership package that you get when you sign up). But I quickly forgot about them when I hit my middle school and high school ages, mostly because I concentrated on real life/personal stuff. But then at my senior year of high school, my mom finally got us a computer. It was my first time of using the Internet (besides school, of course). I remember browsing through pages when I came upon something called fanfiction. I wasn't sure what that meant, so I clicked on it. It brought me to some pages of stories written by the fans, stories with characters from movies, shows, etc. When browsing, I clicked on the Ninja turtle fanfiction pages. Suddenly, my love of the turtles started creeping back up to me. I read story after story and I found myself becoming the huge fan that I am today. Actually, I'm bigger fan now than I've ever been, and I owe it all to the great fans and storytellers out there. Why did these stories have such an impact? It made me realize that the TMNT can be portrayed anyway you want, not just from the cartoon. Whether it be love stories, tragic tales with death, life changing events, or a simple adventure. The stories I read made me laugh, or cry, or even smile. And that is what interests me the most. Now I always try to think of stories to write (with my fave Raph as the star of course) but nothing as of yet. So I guess the bottom line is that I finally became a true fan because of you guys, the TMNT authors. I just want to thank all of you fellow fans out there who have all written such terrific TMNT stories. Peace and good luck to all of you in the future.

Old toon. The first episode I clearly remember seeing is April's Fool. Either that or Case of the Killer Pizza's, it was one of those two. I couldn't have been more than about 5 or 6 at the time but remember sitting in front of the TV completely entranced...one episode was all it needed for my TMNT obsession to begin. When the first movie came out, I went from really obsessed to totally and completely obsessed. The TMNT's were my main interest through childhood and still contiune to be my favourite fandom.

Yeah.. I saw the cartoon first. My bro insisted I watch it. But unlike his cool experiment of making me like Transformers and Ghostbusters, the TMNT cartoon really didn't make me the fan this time. Nor did the toys.

No... it wasn't until after I saw the first movie in 1990, that I fell in love with the green goobers. Cause after that, I started reading up o the articles abotu the movie, where I learned thay came from a comic book. So I went looking for those comics.. and the rest was history. :wink:

For me, it was the original Mirage comics.
Actually, it was because of my daughter who was into the Turtles cartoon that she got me to rent the first TMNT movie, which I just loved, then I happened to catch an interview on 60 Minutes with Kevin and Peter that told me of the origin of the TMNT, that the comics existed, so when I went to visit my brother in NY I went to a local comic shop there and bought about $70 worth of the original comics series to get started on, including the phone book sized collected novel of the first run. Also procured thanks to friends who have had access to plenty of back issues. So, I can say I've read in some form, every TMNT related issue Mirage has published, to date.
Thought, now here's a comic I have always wanted to see. Been hooked on that aspect of TMNT since then. :evilgrin:

Actually I know a couple people who are over 50, one is a grandmother, (though she looks more like she should be on the back of a Harley than be a grandmother) and she is a *big* time Raphael fan-- has been for over 10 years-- collects the comics, has framed TMNT posters and art up all over her house, (rather disconcerting though to have a Raph portrait gazing down at you when you use her bathroom) drives around in a Camaro and just bought a house, she's certainly no loser.
A wealthy friend of hers has a big horse ranch down the road from her, with a swimming pool that has the four ninja turtles in the Eastman/Laird old school style, in colored mosaic tile set in the bottom. Ahm... hey, she's no loser, either. :tangel:

Eesh, I'd try the bigger comic stores in your area, and if there are none, then you could haunt ebay for any back issues for sale... otherwise, not sure what else to do about that. Others could answer that better than I can.

That's when I heard "And now stay tuned for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!"

That's when I became a fan. Seeing the following piece of animation only reafirmed it for me.

Okay, I was really little when the original cartoon aired on CBS, but I still remember I used to watch it every now and then. I guess you wouldn't call me a fan then, but I watched it and have a few TMNT mementos from that time period. When The Next Mutation came on Fox, it became my favorite show compared to some of the other freaky shows that aired. Does anyone remember when the Ninja Turtles teamed up with the Power Rangers :roll: ? NEwayz, after that went off I kind of forgot about the TMNT until the new cartoon came along, and became, should I say addicted? :D

The original cartoon got my attention cuz my kids were so into it, and being the indulgent sort of Mom I am, they got a lot of the toys and stuff they wanted. It was the first movie that really got my attention, though. I guess since we ended up seeing in the theater something like 10 times altogether I was certainly in the "fan" category by then.
But the real hook was when I discovered the Mirage books. I read through the entire collected works of Vol. 1, in one night and by morning I was reborn and baptized in the green ooze of terminal fandom....
Writing three novel-length TMNT fanfics certainly helped, too; reinforced my own addiction!

It all began when my 2 year older cousin was a fan of it way back in the late eighties. I was too young to know the movies and The cartoon was very famous. My cousin was borned in 1986 and he been around since the first seasons were aired. It was in 1992/1993 with alittle something called mimicing:when the sibling learns and mimics the older one. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't even be here.

I remenber seeing the original ones on USA only several I can remenber. Please know that I never seen all 194 episodes at once. I can remenber seeing the next mutation but I only watched one. I don't remenber why I didn't had time to see the other ones. 1998-2002 were the forgotten years. When I found the offical TMNT website I found out more about the TMNT's new show. It wasn't until Feb 8 when it first aired and I felt nervious after the time clock pass zero and boom it began.

As for the movies it wasn't until late 2001 and early 2002 when I bought the videos and watched them. So I'm glad that TMNT is more alive than ever.

Long story short (in order of sequence):

My sister's friend who lived next door to us when I was 4 liked TMNT, I didn't know what it was...

After he moved away, I decided to further my interest in it...

Watched the episode "Splinter No More" back when it first aired...

I saw a knock-off of Leonardo (that was WHITE) at toy store, mom bought it for me...

Mom saw the Heroes in a Half-Shell VHS at Blockbuster one day in '89, rented it, and recorded it on a Beta tape for me (this is where my love of TMNT REALLY got a on roll)...

Got my first TMNT toy (Metalhead) during Xmas of that same year...

Once the movie came out in '90 until some time in '95 I was one of what were called "Turtlemaniacs"...

In the aftermath of that, I still watched the few VHS tapes I used to own from time to time as well as play the video games constantly...

Around '98-'99 was the beginning of what I call my "TMNT fandom dormancy"; I had almost forgotten the existence of TMNT, except for the fact that it was during that year I thought of the idea of the "hostile takeover" arc. It was originally a hopeless wish I had for a video game, and at the time I wanted to simply call it "TMNT 2000", since at that time the storyline I had in mind for it involved Shredder and Krang usurping the entire world's governments (it still does today) and having an incomplete regime that was vulnerable to be counter-usurped before midnight on Dec. 31, 1999. For those of you that remember when I first joined, I vaguely mentioned this idea and then having discovered the world of fanfiction, decided I should write it out (novel length, mind you); I have yet to beging writing it :goofygri:...

Summer 2000: I moved to where I live now, I made the ghastly mistake (in retrospect) of selling all my TMNT VHS to Goodwill; I thought TMNT was out of my life for good...

Some few months later, my friend Richard calls me up like he usually does, mentions TMNT, we talk about nothing but that for about half an hour...

About a year after that, he starts sending me links on/about: the rumored TMNT CGI series and movie, the pilot for said series, and the official site itself...

Somewhere along the line he muses to me about a TMNT mod for DOOM, to which I play along with but at the same time tell him how realistic it is (not very) at the time...

Another short year-hiatus later, after downloading a few TMNT eps off Kazaa (thanks to Richard again, he mentioned trying to find them on said application), I decided to humor myself and make a small TMNT DOOM 2 mod, but only sounds and maybe music, some graphics...

During a search for a good TMNT logo to use for that mod, I discovered this page (http://www.kaejae-worx.com/~don/videogame/tmnt/index.htm), and inspired me even more to make this mod (that's another story (http://depot.wrong.button.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=174), however), but more importantly it completely revitalized my complete interest in TMNT...

While looking for sound clips for this mod (this was before I discovered the wonders of my what my SBLive! was capable of), I discoved the sound clip section here and noticed it had a forum. I thought to myself at the time, "Hmmm, should I sign up? Am I THAT dedicated a fan? Will I repeat the same fate I had at the Doomworld forums?"

Obviously, you know what happened from there....

Now that I'm older, it wouldn't really be a fair fight between my dad and I. Then again, if it was battle during my TMNT days in the late 80's and early 90's, he would've mopped the floor with me. Haha.

Long story. Basically, he and I don't get along. He's a crack addict. He's a liar. He's stolen from me my whole life. I was homeless for a time in high school because of his stupidity. I lost my job once because I got sick and he had stolen money I had saved and needed to use to go to a doctor, and he lied about it. Wasn't the first time. Back in 1998 over a period of 7 or 8 months he stole almost ten thousand dollars out of my bank account, and lied about that too. He's not a good person, and in fact if we weren't related I'd want nothing to do with him.

So, therefore, occasionally when we butt heads, it turns physical. He's about 6'3 or 6'4, between 250 and 290 piunds depending. But I'm 5'7, 160 pounds with an Irish temper and a deep sadistic streak. One time when we fought, I almost killed him because he nearly choked me unconscious. The last time, he pulled a knife on me as a last resort to keep me away from him, and it took 5 people to pull me off of him. Not pretty.

So yeah, he knows and always has known to just stay the f*ck out of my way, because not only do I have no reason to listen to someone with a crack habit and a prison record as long as my arm, he also knows that if he ever dared put a hand on me I would put him through a wall.

That's basically it in a nutshell.

Actually I'm really bad about holding grudges and I'm probably the least forgiving person in the world. Whenever he and I fight I end up throwing every injustice done to me since birth in his face. I'm a petty, spiteful bastard. One time when he insulted my girlfriend and we got in a huge fistfight, and I really wanted to hurt his feelings, when he came to me to apologize I spit in his face, stormed out of the house, spent the night at Mary's and then ignored him for a week. He practically begged forgiveness afterward, which is pretty much the only time I know he's being sincere.

Well, thanks, dude, it's cool to know that somehow it matters in the long run that I've been able to go through all this sh*t with my head up. Honestly I have seen people end up all messed up or dead over a lot less. But eh, we all got problems. Something that sends one person into therapy for the rest of his life doesn't even faze someone else. It's all about how you deal with it. I don't get along with my father. I don't hate him, but I deeply resent him and I honestly don't think we're going to resolve our problems (his other son, my half-brother, refuses to see or talk to him). I could let that cripple me, or I could get it in my head that no matter what, I will NOT be like he is. If anything, I've learned in life what NOT to do, and I guess I owe him for that.

And it's cool to hear I'm respected. Agree or disagree with someone, I think respect is important. And Rez, here's my issue: I can have a disagreement with you, be of completely different opinion, and tell it like it is without outright insulting you or your opinions. But for you to call me an "idiot" and refer to me as "brian damaged" over a petty disagreement, that shows not only no respect, but a lack of maturity. I don't dislike you, I don't even know you well enough to have an opinion on your actual personality, but I can't stand when you do stuff like that. And I've seen you do it a lot, to a lot of people, but I refuse to take it. I don't remember calling anyone "brain damaged" or "idiots" just because they disagree with me, I did so because they showed signs that they indeed were. You must be thinking of Garet. Even if I did, perhaps the umpteenmillion smilies I put in my posts weren't clue enough to show that I was in no way serious...

In any case, I don't think you have any right to call me "immature" when in fact I am probably a hell of a lot more mature than a vast majority of my peers. Like I said, I have no idea where what I quoted from you came from...

It was a while ago in one of the wrestling threads, you called me an idiot and said I was brain damaged, and after that I pretty much stopped paying attention to that thread and explained that whenever you resort to stuff like that, I wouldn't bother replying to you. And there were no smilies in THAT post indicating any kind of levity. Note, however, that it was quite a while ago, and that we've communicated in several threads since then, which should adequately show you that I don't harbor any lasting anger or resentment towards you for it, just that when you DO do it, it pisses me off, and that it IS an immature thing to do, at least when you seem to be serious. Just because you are more mature than a lot of people here in many ways doesn't make you immune to immature behavior.

So anyway, you probably *weren't* being serious at the time, but you never gave any indication that you were joking, either, and the fact the debate was becoming so heated made your comments about me being "brain damaged" certainly sound serious. But if you were in fact joking it probably went over your head, understandably.

I became hooked from the cartoon, comics and living a mile away from Eastman. I also went to school with his nephew up until 3rd grade. Basically, my entire life I've been around ninja turtles starting with my first Leonardo action figure back in `88 for my 3rd birthday. Geeze, I still have that guy in one of my action figure boxes...

I was at the hospital... I was almost dieing, I was waiting for my doctor to come. I had to be operated.. I could not stop crying. I was a little girl . A very nice nurse tried to calm me down so she turned on the 4th channel and I saw TMNT turtles. I stopped crying and started to watch. Then I was operated but I didn't feel the pain anymore. Mine pales in comparison to yours. I got hooked on the TMNT since I first saw the original cartoon air on TV. I think I was about six or seven at the time, and I heard a bunch of kids at school talking about this brand new cartoon. I tuned in one day, loved the show, and I've been a fan of them ever since.
