View Full Version : Hypothetically Would you want TMNT pushed back to Oct/Nov?

I ask this in response to the thread about GOTG winning August,

would it be so bad push it back to have TMNT not compete with Marvels Anticipated film?

sure it may hurt it a little,

i mean when i worked on what's your number it was pushed back a year so evans could be seen as Captain America first (granted the was a bad film from the start)

but Thor: Dark World came out in Nov and did just fine

it would also give them time to do a more thought out marketing that many of us feel the film needs

and it would allow the movie to be released internationally around the same time

thoughts?

again lets keep it civil..this is a hypothetical

Yes but the only reasoning being to have a closer world wide release date

Everything else will be moot next month

Hmm ... I really don't know what I would like. I REALLY want to see this movie, so I want to say August. However, Guardians may or may not take the spotlight away from TMNT. And that takes away from the potential success of this new movie, making it less likely for a sequel (which I may be okay with if the movie really isn't that good [however, I'm optimistic]). It may just cut into the budget of the TMNT sequel, which still isn't good.

BUT I'm not exactly sure what I feel about GOTG, and how successful it will be. It's a property not known, and a very out there property at that. Sometimes a good trailer isn't enough to get peoples butts in the theaters, it can be the actors in it and finial roth with the characters. Not sure if people, unlike the frequent internet fanboys we are (and, some of us, Marvel fans), are even AWARE of this movie, or excited for it.

So ... I wouldn't be so quick to say that TMNT should move back. I think their to far into marketing to do it anyway. 'Summer' ... 'August' ... 'August 8' ... They tweet that out to 30k or so followers on Twitter all the time, and that's just Twitter.

How about this, why does Marvel deliberately go up against Warner Bros. Superman VS Batman:Dawn of Justice Instead of Captain America 3 being on the same weekend in April it was this year which turned out to be a great move out a full movie before Blockbuster season. I get the feeling that Paramont thinks no matter when it releases it,as it had multiple previous dates it will have competition regardless and the outcome will not be much different. All four previous films opened in March and I doubt had much competition effect it even if there was a movie to effect its take. How much did 300 have an effect on TMNT? Yes,even if I did not see it or care for the content it did far better than TMNT. Did it take away potential audience? Probably not. Will Guardians of The Galaxy? Maybe. Both are superhero films however are vastly different concepts. In 2011 there was a belief the audience was tired out of superheroes because of Green Lantern just making back its huge budget and X-Men Origins underperforming. It turns out the plot was hard to grab the audience not necessarily the heroes uninterested in the certain heroes. That was proven with Avengers and Batman:The Dark Knight Rises both making over a billion and The Amazing Spider-Man making little over 700 million the vear.

Well, it was Warner Brothers who made the immature move when THEY moved their movie to a date Marvel had already announced a film for. Personally, that's really a 'in your face' and 'unprofessional' move. I don't really blame Marvel for standing their ground, THEY wanted that date, and they had it. This is all just childish competiveness.

i would say this all stems from the original rivalry of DC vs Marvel , one wants to do better than the other no matter the cost..but come next year i bet you one will move...and i bet it will be Warner..and i dont just say that as a marvel fan boy

ive only ever heard of marvel moving back one franchise (fantastic four)

I'd rather it get pushed back forever and only released on VHS. That's right...VHS....that way the only way to watch it is the people who still have VCR's. :D

I really don't buy the idea that GOTG 'has already won August'. They're ahead of TMNT as far as marketing is concerned, yes, but TMNT is out there now and many people are excited for it. Of course there is negative reaction to it, as there is with any reboot/remake of an old property, but there is still a ton of excitement around this movie.

I realize that it isn't everything, but TMNT has a much, much bigger name than GOTG. To the average movie-goer, I think that will carry some weight. The attitude around here generally appears to fall a bit more on the side of negative outlook toward the movie, and that seems to lead people to think that most of the planet shares their disdain for the upcoming TMNT movie. I just don't think that that is the case, a lot of people are just excited to see their favourite childhood heroes back on the big screen and more realistic than ever. Not everyone is a comic book/movie nerd like so many of us here, and while GOTG may still look like it will be a good movie, many are thinking the same about TMNT and it has the nostalgia factor on its side.

To answer the question, in a word, Nope. Maybe it's because I really don't subscribe to the argument that just because Guardians is releasing around the same time that all of a sudden it's doomed to fail.

While the Guardians are coming in hot ( I will be seeing it in theaters ), the Turtles have stood the test of time, and 30 years later are still a force to be reckoned with in pop culture.

There is room for both to succeed.

Can I just add that there has been little to no marketing for the Expendables 3, yet the opinion has been voiced that it'll somehow steal the Turtles thunder...I'm sorry, I disagree with that as well. August will the month for epic space pirates, and shinobi terrapins, I'm willing to bet money on that.

Similarly, the Hunt for Red October and Pretty Woman, released the same month as the original Steve Barron TMNT, and while their properties cater to different audiences, it's proof that a Turtle film can hold its ground against other major players released around the same time.

This i agree with, It is such a shame that the international releases are so spread out it makes no sense, why do they do this?

BUT Its entertainment that all that matter instead of who won who it should be Heck August is going to be a great Movie month and heck Im going to be seeing likely 3 or 4 different movies that month which is great and likely enjoy every single one.

I'd say another push back would probably be negative.

I honestly think they should have pulled the date in to mid-June. About 2 weeks after X-Men and 2 weeks before Transformers if they were set on a summer release. It was set for June....they didn't want it going head to head with Transformers because they felt it would hurt box office.

Naw, just release to get it over with and have GOTG mop the floor with this travesty of a turtle movie. They already decided that this was the route they were going with.. it's not like they're gonna go back and fix it now. Just release and end its misery already.

Does anyone actually know why our (the UK) release date is October 17th? It's bad enough having to wait an extra 10 weeks (by then I'll know everything that happens in the film unless I try and avoid all media) but not knowing the reason for the delay makes me so much more angry about this. :tmad:

This continuing "notion/assumption " that GOTG is somehow a threat to the success of TMNT is ridiculous.. and that it is somehow doomed just bc some of you don't like what you've seen so far so it should continue being moved around.. it's the same premature pessimistic nonsense that has been going on for months now. It really is lol. I am starting to think it's intentional. I wonder what the responses would be if this thread were " Should Guardians be moved back 3 more months? " It's basically saying AGAIN that " This movie is DOOMED so what if they moved it back to fix it " It's just the same ol baseless assumption and the posturing is getting a little old. I'm seeing both films but bc of these constant assumptions that the only chance TMNT has is if it gets moved far away from the "flawless" GOTG, I hope TMNT knocks it out of the park. The fanaticism seems to run on both sides of the fence around here

I'm not sure why other countries aren't getting the same release date at the US; I imagine that if you're not getting it til October 17th, I won't either. It always makes me grumpy when I get shafted on release dates - I realise that America is the centre of the universe (joke) but c'mon, people in other countries enjoy things too! Give us things, and then we can share things together!

Being 10 weeks behind the US makes me feel like I live in some crappy little backwater, and it's bad for my self esteem.

Some would say that you're better off not having you're own Hollywood. But imo I think Hollywood IS the center of the "film industry" Universe unfortunately. I think that may be why we get to enjoy things a little more exclusively. TMNT is also an American based franchise. In this case.. I think the multiple release dates are going to hurt the film.. Maybe that's why it's getting IMAX internationally so far.. idk.

Well apparently Paramount want Transformers and TMNT kept way apart and UK have no big films (I think) in October and probably want TMNT to win October (thats my guess and we have school half term that month too) but I don't understand whats wrong with September, I don't see any big movies for that month for us.

Transformers out in UK on 10th July, 2 weeks after US, think it's because the world cup is on and most of England be watching it
Hercules (Paramounts other big film) was meant to released on August 8th in UK but now it's been brought forward to 25th July, I wonder if that was because of Guardians of the Galaxy will probably beat it.

Movies coming out in September for UK

Sex Tape
Life of Crime
Before I go to Sleep
The Boxtrolls
Lets be Cops
The Hundred Foot Journey
Pride
Finding Fanny
Think Like a Man too
Wish I was Here
Posh
What we did on our Holiday
Ida
A Walk Among the Tombstones
Searchparty

Movies Coming out in October for UK

Bang Bang
Gone Girl
The Equalizer
The Maze Runner
TMNT
Kingsman: The Secret Service
The Judge
Dophin Tale 2
Dracula Untold
Paranormal Activity 5
The Book of Life
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
No Good Deed
MR Turner

Why is it ridiculous?

Any movie out at the time is potentially a threat and the continuing notion/assumption from defenders of Bay's TMNT that a movie that has been very well promoted and is part of a cinematic franchise as currently hugely popular as Marvel has no chance of outperforming TMNT is ridiculous.

Of course if it does outperform Ninja Turtles doesn't necessarily mean that TMNT is a failure but people do tend to see these things as a competition.

NoName999

If it's pushed back to Oct/Nov, the movie would have to compete with Big Hero 6.

If you think a Marvel movie is going to hurt TMNT, then a Disney one is gonna kill it.

every movie is a threat to every other movie..its why TMNT was moved in favor of transformers

but even if you dont agree with you you can deny that if one was to be moved TMNT is more likely to that GOTG...for whatever reason it was more agaisnt it ...and yes GOTG is a major threat but so is a 2 month gap in international release that could really hurt box office....moving it to release them closer could actually end up making it do tons better at the box office

dont get me wrong i love tmnt as much as the next guy on here..and why their are some things in this movie i can not stand,i will go see it...but i know that GOTG while a "new" franchise has a currently highly popular studio name attached to it as well as a cinematic universe to back it up

personally i feel it would be wise for TMNT not to take that risk..again especially when there is a 2 month gap in INT release dates

October? No
November? Definitely.

If they could squeeze the TMNT movie around Thanksgiving time I think they'd find more success. The week before Thanksgiving would compete with the Hunger Games. But if they released it the week of they'd see a longer opening weekend. Plus Thanksgiving is a family holiday, and the TMNT is family friendly.

There seems to be much cynicism about TMNT's future going up against GotG. One thing I don't think people have considered is that GOTG is generally receiving a lot of positive hype. TMNT on the other hand is seemingly receiving lots of negative hype.

Generally speaking if the average viewer goes to see a movie with high expectations they're more likely to be disappointed. This would result in a larger opening box office followed by a rapid decline the following weeks if the GOTG turns out to not be that good.

On the contrary if the average viewer goes to see a movie with lower expectations, they are more likely to end up with a more positive outlook of it. So assuming TMNT doesn't totally suck, I'm betting viewers will come out with a better opinion then they did going in. If that's the case there is nothing releasing that noteworthy the 2 weeks following the TMNT release. That gives ample time for positive word of mouth to entice the casual moviegoer to see TMNT.
