View Full Version : Will You Watch The New Movie?

For the Turtles' sake I almost hope their movie will be one bright spot in this person's career. Even if it's a dim spot that simply looks brighter laid over a lot of darkness...
Thinking maybe I might grab a bottle or two of the soda shortly before opening day and leave it up to the bottles if they care to give me a free ticket or not.
Kind like the director of the 90's movie Really hadn't done any before or after the turtles really only minor things

It's an entirely different scenario, though, because that guy went into making the movie with a very clear focus: A live-action adaptation that mostly re-told the early Mirage issues while adding a bit of the humor from the cartoon. If that's your starting point, and you have enough money to make the effects believable, then really, you only have to point and shoot for it to turn out good. Not to take anything away from that director, but the entire project benefited from playing it "safe" and not trying to do too much, especially the first time out of the gate.
That focus is something I feel the new film lacks. It looks like they're trying to cram in as much as they can from every bit of TMNT lore, and it seems boated and overdone, because as we all know some parts of the TMNT mythology clash and don't mesh well. This movie seems like they're approaching it with a "Just throw it all in there" mindset. They're also making a lot more changes and taking a lot more risks, which is where having a director with an actual track record would come in handy. Basically, almost anyone could have done a good job directing the first film, since all they had to do was re-tell the comics. For what the new film is trying to be, they'd be better served with someone who has been successful in the past. It's like how they didn't just put Nolan and Snyder on the Superman movies because their other movies made money, but because they've proven they can do a good job in that specific genre of films, that they can specifically create good super-hero films (And I won't even get into the debate about whether or not that makes them a good fit for Superman specifically... That's a whole other debate in itself...).
So it's not a simple, direct comparison between the directors; it's a little more complicated than that. One guy lacked experience, but had a clear idea of what he was trying to do, whereas the other guy is trying to do a million things at once and may or may not simply be a figurehead/mouthpiece for the producer.
----------------------------------------------------------------
As far as me seeing it in the theaters goes, at this point I kind of want to just because I only went to the movies once all year, and I hate that. I have a pretty good idea what to expect, and how it'll make me feel, but I feel like a summer without going to the movies is partly wasted. I'm also not looking forward to my wife's negative reaction; see, before Man of Steel came out, I thought it looked crummy and she thought it looked good, and in the theater our roles switched, as I ended up liking it and she really, really didn't, and for weeks afterwards I couldn't even bring it up. It's still kind of a sore spot, and I'm not looking forward to going through it again. I don't like what I've seen so far, but I'm a little bit more open than she is. She checked out a while ago.
I'unno, we might go. It's not in the plans but if we don't end up seeing any other movies between now and then I might pull the, "Well, you say we never go anywhere" card. I partly feel like it'd be worth it just because I'm going to see it one day anyway, so "might as well", but on the other hand, money really is tight and if I really end up hating it, I'll be pissed off all week about the money I wasted on it. Total crapshoot at this point. If I wasn't a TMNT fan in general, though, it'd be an easy "avoid" based on everything I've seen so far. It's just not at all my kind of movie.

Hey Leo, couldn't you just go see the movie on your own without the wife? It couldn't hurt to do something for you - I mean, there's nothing wrong with seeing movies by yourself. :)

Newp. She's the one that drives, for one. For two, we do most things together. Going to movies separately, especially, would be just a few steps below full-blown cheating, as our relationship goes. Almost as bad as going toy shopping without the other. Almost, not quite. It's always been like that, some things we just have to do together. It works for us, might seem weird to other people, I don't know.
If one of us got Chinese food without the other one, for example, that would be grounds for separation. Some things you just don't do.
She might change her mind about the movie just because it's TMNT. I mean, she loves the "Pirates..." movies and those things are flat-out terrible.

I'm going to see it in theaters. I was originally going to see it during it's first screenings on August 7th but I'm seeing "Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie" that same night so I'm going to try to see the new Turtles movie after I get out of the AVGN movie. I'm actually more excited about the AVGN movie than I am the TMNT movie :tlol:

Having thought about it I'm leaning towards no.
I haven't thought about until now but by the time it's released in the UK I'll know a great deal about it. I'm not going to avoid spoilers for that long and will certainly pay attention to what everyone says about it and keep in mind when deciding whether to see.
I suppose there's a chance everything I hear will be positive and make me want to see but what are the odds of that.
I actually think that much later international releases will really hurt them in this regard.

Ah, fair enough. That's understandable I suppose; I mean, I always watch the Nick show later than everyone else because my partner and I have to watch it together - I just wouldn't feel right watching it without him, so I have to wait til we're both home at the same time.

Yeah, I don't know about the rest of the internationals but I have zero intention of remaining spoiler-free for this thing. I'd basically have to stay out of the movie forums from August to September and damned if I'm doing that.

I saw that guy in Immortals too, and I thought he sucked in that movie as well. All I know was when I was watching MOS, I kept on thinking, how much better that movie might have been if Matt Bomer was playing Superman instead (someone who was at the top of my list for the role)

At least for the sake of their box office numbers the ticket won and I can't really waste it, now can I.

I plan to go see this movie. I'm curious to see how the Turtles interact with the Foot & the Shredder. Also, if April steps up as she tried to do in most of the cartoons (course the Turtles would say, "April wait here.")
Remember the line in the trailer: "So, they're aliens." "No, they're turtles."
That makes fans very happy. :D

These two charts show a consistent theme in the brand affinities of TMNT's likely audience. Casual and fast-casual dining, mid-market apparel and sporting goods, packaged goods, and caffeine drinks are a huge hit with this crowd. Higher-end grocers, big box retail, and cars -- with the notable exception of Jeep -- not so much.

I love the bit that states:
Some older fans of TMNT aren't taking the bait but many certainly will, if under the guise of "oh I'm just taking my kids."
I'm definitely going without my kids! Don't won't the film being interrupted by their questions on what's happening, requests for food/drink and frequent trips to the toilet. Nah, I'll be leaving them at home. Bad mummy! :o If I think it's suitable I'll go see it again and take my eldest with me. He'll be my excuse to see it at the cinema a second time ;)

Wise idea, hard to really get an feel from the trailers what age it's really appropriate for. (And so far I think this is still "not yet rated"?)

I saw on another forum where someone thought the baby turtle breaking the glass looked similar to the nokia going apesh!t in Transformers. Some people think it's the exact same scene, they just swap out the transformer phone for a turtle. And it won't be the first time a Michael Bay production has done this. He used footage from Pearl Harbor in TF2 and footage from The Island in TF3.

I know the story behind using the Island, it's because when they were originally shooting the chase scene for TF3, there was an accident and a stunt person actually died on the scene, so everyone involved with the movie decided to not use the scene at all out of respect for the person who died an the family.
But the Pearl Harbor scene was cheap in TF2 was cheap.
But, if they are using scenes from Transformers in TMNT, it makes one wonder, who really is in control of this movie? Hmmm, me thinks Liebersman has as much control of TMNT as Wright had of The Ant Man.

Strange that they show the results of their survey and then break down the likelihood of the ages that are very likely to see it, etc, but not once do they detail the data for the 82% of their sampling that said they are not likely to see it at all.
Basically they ignored the overall data and skipped to only the 18% who indicated they'd see it and acted like all the data within that minority tells us a lot of insightful information.
What if the 82% that said no is overwhelmingly the same age group that said yes?
"Clearly the film is appealing to the technically savvy" Clearly? We don't know that because you didn't share any data regarding the MAJORITY OF YOUR SURVEY RESPONDENTS!
That's about the worst presentation of data I could ask for.

They probably count because a company purchased the "free pass" as a promotional addition to their product.
So even though the movie goer didn't pay for it, it was paid for at one point.
I could be wrong, though.

If that is the case... wow, that'd be a really brazen way to artificially inflate the box office returns. There are a lot of people who would go see a movie for free that they wouldn't otherwise pay for.
Of course, a lot of these tickets are included with DVDs and such that come direct from Paramount. There has to be someone keeping track of this stuff.

Do any theaters even allow these "free passes" during the first two weeks of release? No theater in my area does.
I used to notice that a lot of these "free passes" were only good for the first two weeks of release as well so essentially they're worthless. I'm not sure if that's the case with this promotion though.

No, I doubt I will. No interest in green monster trucks with scary faces fighting gun-toting martial artists. I know not to judge a book by its cover...but Bay is involved and Meagan Fox. I just can't bring myself to.
It's sorta like the 2k7 film for me, which I saw two years after the fact. I didn't watch out of interest, I watched out of convenience. I was stuck in the hospital at the time and it was on TV. If I ever do watch this newer film, it would probably be in the same manner. Maybe channel surfing and come across it.
