With Leo landing and creating craters, Raph back-handing some one to space, his destruction of the Humvee, Mike with the rocket skateboard, and now Don flipping a truck with his bow... it's pretty obvious that any sort of logic has been thrown out the window.

Yes, this is a movie about anthropomorphized turtles and a rat but that is just a specific section to create this story. The rest of the world doesnt really have function in the same crazy way. Heck in the Nick cartoon Don's Bo actually brakes and they have aliens and other dimensions.

This way i may enjoy the movie more. And i am actually doing this because of the Godzilla movie. The marketing for that movie gave you the impression that the movie was going to be one way but the movie is totally different. So with these little hints i am preparing myself for some crazy crap.

It's going to be a zany cartoony ride.

It's funny to see how fragile Nicktoon Donnie's staff is, as actual Bo don't break as easy, but a telescopic staff PD Donnie uses seems rather... Sturdy.

I want to say they have a reason for the truck going up in the air, by Donnie using his staff, as they come down the mountain. Don's staff (from what I've seen), isn't wooden, yet retractable. It doesn't look as breakable.

He put the bo, retracted, under the truck, and then with leverages it off a rock as he extends the bo under the truck.

However, that's all from memory and based off of not the best recording of the trailer from the theatre.

Also, a rocket skateboard is on par or even less than the same as something like Iron Man, Leo hasn't created "craters" (in my opinion). But I will give you Raph (however, I don't think they were intending to really have him going straight up, you just notice it after seeing the video in repeat)

Maybe there's a really low gravity in this universe? That would explain why everything is so big, it needs to be heavy not to float away, that's why trucks are so light and foot soldiers fly into orbit.

I don't know if you guys noticed, but when Donnie was about to flip the truck over, he pressed a red button on his staff and used a large rock as a way to spring the truck upward. But I still don't know what material that staff is made of though :ohwell:

Eh. Yeah, they seem to bend the rules of physics a bit, but so what? I don't agree with the prevailing Hollywood reasoning that you can do whatever wild things you want in animation, but if you film a movie in live action, everything needs to be realistic. Who drew that line?

Isn't it a negative that comic book properties only get live action feature films by being forced into a realistic world? Anything that helps break that barrier is fine by me.

That makes sense.
Maybe the Utroms have been slowly lowering the gravity of the planet so they can walk around without using robots.

There's a certain level of goofiness you can do and this is apparent in all action films. Most of the stuff that Batman does is not really possible in real life. Those bat ropes he uses to escape need a device that is way bigger than the one he uses and one cant really glide the way Batman does but they still fall within a certain level of realism.

Flipping a truck with a stick, tackling a truck, and breaking bricks when you land are outside of the range of the standard turtle levels. But if they explain that.... they are hulk-level in strength i guess those events makes a bit more sense. But if they are the rocket skateboard makes no sense cause the power needed to move those things is tremendous! Unless those are Utrom tech... then i guess that makes sense...

Still... i am preparing for none of this to make any sense and going in thinking this is just a cartoon.

This is the direction I'm leaning towards atm. As I've said before, if I expect something on the level of the 1990 film, I'm bound to be disappointed - it's obvious at this stage that we're not going to get it. So maybe if I don't take it as seriously, I can enjoy it in a different way.

Well said! Films like Iron Man are full of realism-stretching stuff too, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie! A little over-the-top'ish stuff I can tolerate. It doesn't mean I'll swallow anything, but so far I haven't really seen anything in this film that is too outrageous for me to swallow.

Two things... I'm not an apologist just some observations:

1. yes, the turtles this time are bigger, beefier, stronger... not quite to The Hulk levels but you could definitely say they are "hulked out" -- though Don is less so than the other 3. The producers of this film chose to go a little further with what a mutant turtle might actually be capable of.

2. It's no ordinary staff... it's some sort of techno-gadget staff he made. You can tell by looking at promotional images of him holding it, as well as the toys. So it is capable of a bit more than your standard wooden staff.

Same goes for every other version of the turtles that includes the Turtle Van.

In each incarnation, they end up having an explanation (even if it's a little out there). TMNT is a 'little out there' property, having many 'out there' things. Mutant turtles, ninja clans in NYC, and, yes, a turtle van.

Even though this is a film approach to a franchise we all know and love, I'm open to bending "realism" rules for it, just like every other TMNT cartoon and comic. Just like every other big blockbuster film.

There's a lot of fun qualities added that may not exist in the real world. However, I would rather be open to it than nitpick about everything that might not be slightly realistic. This is a movie, a movie with many wacky things, that I don't want a thirty minute explanation for everything 'wacky' in it.

(This is not directed at all negative posters. If it seems I'm generalizing, I apologize. This isn't even all directed at you, Candy Kappa [it actually started that way, and then it turned into a post where I could address some other concerns or gripes].)

If Donnie kicked, or lifted it causing it to flip. Go ahead. HULK TURTLEZ it up, but that's not what happens.

I'll buy his 'Anti-physics bo' the same way I buy that he's an 'mutated anthropomorphic turtle who is trained by an anthropomorphic rat'.

There WILL be a degree of suspension of disbelief in this movie. This will not be super grounded, nor should it. This will not be super realistic, not should it. It should LOOK real, as it seems it does. But as long as it all works within the confines of this, their own universe, I'm there.

Set the 'rules' up and follow them though. If the Bo breaks in half the next scene against a Foot's shin. I'll be bitching like the next guy. But if this is how his new and improved Bo works, and they stick with it (heh), then I'm game.

I'll already take this one scene over 'Inflatable Punching Bag Donatello beating up a foot with a foam bat'.

I might find it absurd but I won't argue with consistency. If he can do things like lift a truck shoot knives/missles and use it as a USB I won't complain so long as hitting the Shredder's armor or it breaks when he swings too hard at an enemy. Average human weight: roughly 175 pounds.

Average weight of a pickup truck: roughly 6,000 pounds. (And potentially much more if this is a military vehicle like the Humvee BayRaph demolished with his shell.)

I think it's more that people don't expect realism from cartoons as much as they do from live action films. Not choosing sides here, but when people associated with the movie and defenders of the movie are saying that these are "realistic Turtles", it kind of sets people up to expect a semi-realistic world to go along with it... otherwise it seems a little inconsistent.

I think the OP's right - it's better to just think of this as a live-action cartoon. Regardless of the creative team's intent, trying to interpret any of this movie as realistic is just setting ourselves up for disappointment. It could still potentially be enjoyable on a cartoon/larger-than-life level, so I don't think that it really takes away from anything to think of it that way. If other people still want to take it seriously, that's up to them... but I think in the long run, it won't really hold up.

Just IMO. :)

3 of the turtles get captured so there should be balance.

They're giant, MUTATED, freakishly strong ninja turtles. The production is emphasizing the mutant aspect to the characters. They also happen to be extremely skilled in martial arts. Just cause they have super soldier like strength beyond normal humans doesn't mean they're not NINJAS. We're going to see some crazy action. Why on earth would anyone have a problem with that at all? It ramps up their abilities.

I have my issues with the movie, and they are quite petty and small, but the issues with the size and power don't bother me in the slightest.

I agree with this entirely. Plot can still make it work, but I've always liked it better when heroes have to be strategic to win a fight. Employing their learned skills instead of smashing through things. It's a much more exciting and engaging scene to watch when the guys you're rooting for have to think outside the box.

Because maybe you want the emphasis to be on the NINJA aspect instead. Maybe you don't think their abilitys need to be ramped up. The bigger is better mindset this movie has is my biggest problem with it as part of the reason I like the turtles in the first place is because they're not super powered. Their victories are earned through training and will power not them just being better than the competition thanks to their origin story. If their just stronger than everybody else where's the tension and the challenge? You'll have to scale up everything else to even have it be a threat to them.

Exactly. The story feels more like it could be real [or at least, as real a story about mutant turtles could be] when their struggles are smaller-scale. When they're given brutish strength or super powers, it makes them feel no different from Superman who I also find lacking in the department of "being genuinely interesting". He's not interesting. He's over-powered and you know going in that he's going to win. When the ante is upped, it makes the story feel way too outside the realm of possibility and I just don't like that as much.

yeah. i was gonna say...

they're not going up against teens trained in "old style" martial arts. looks like they're going up against big-@ss commandos with assault gear and swat armor (and if theres any truth to the rumors that there are mutant-blood enhanced soldiers in this flick, then some "super powered" foes as well).

well, this all depends on if the character drama only comes from physical and violent conflict.

yes, its michael bay, blahblahblah, so what character drama is there to speak of blahblahblah...i get that.

but look at a movie like thor, in which the main hero is a GOD. with SUPER COSMIC QUASI MYTHOLOGICAL SPACE POWERS. most of the meaty drama there was family issues, loyalty issues, love and self-discovery. heck, many marvel movie characters are like this.

I think when movies/shows/stories reach a level of seriousness (as this movie is seeming to display), the viewer expects things to be mostly realistic or follow some sense of logic, otherwise the movie can become a parody of itself creating ridiculous melodrama where common sense is thrown out of the window. (For example, how soap operas are ridiculed where there's a bunch of melodrama between characters, yet as intense as the characters' hardships may be, it doesn't dawn on them to figure out a logical way to deal with things.)

Now it may be entertaining for some, but I don't think that's what the movie staff intended, for their movie to be logic parody of itself considering how dark and "badass" they are trying to depict this 2014 TMNT movie to be. ...I could be completely wrong when I see it, but the dramatic music, effects, and cut scenes presented in the trailers, in addition to the fact that Bay and Liebesman have typically made heavy action and serious films, seem to want us (the audience) to take the movie and its situations seriously. Otherwise, why not add slapstick fighting then if the movie is intended to be that ridiculous/unrealistic then?

Just can't win with everybody on this thing.

If he lifted it up with his body people would have shat all over it.

If he actually used what he was known for and created a bo-staff that he is able to use to flip a car (and probably that shipping container that crashes into the foot) people are still ******** all over it.

That scene had nothing to do with strength at all. The momentum of the car is what lifted it up, not Donnie.

Example (the person being the car :P ):

All he had to do was place the bo in a specific spot on the car and on the ground and voila! If anything this is a scene where brains are used over brawn.

Donnie used physics - as someone mentioned in another thread, he used his staff like a pole vaulter.

After extending his staff, he wedged the bottom tip into a stone firmly embedded into the mountainside, and the truck's momentum did the rest...

I dont know...I think they may be going for a darker approach in the filming style of this movie, but all this "real" talk going on around here where people are saying, "they are trying to make this movie more real, so why can donnie flip a car, etc." I dont think this is the case. Im trying to figure out how people have come to the conclusion that anyone is trying to make "everything" more real? Yes, we know the turtles are bigger with accessories on their body and they now have a different face, but I would chalk that up to artistic license...every interview Ive heard I just keep hearing that this is the new "interpretation" of the turtles. Not...we are making realistic turtles that mutated. And if people go into any movie like this assuming that because it isnt a cartoon that its real and accurate...or should be, then please show me examples of sci fi action movies that do that in their films.

To me nobody should have create a post saying, "Im viewing this movie as a cartoon now." Because while it may not be 1987 cartoon over the top, it is definitely going to be filled with situations that aren't real, and that bend physics for the audiences amusement.

Heck, if what people want is realism, okay, but if thats the case I think at least half the turtles should be killed in this movie. Why? Because in real life, few people...weither its a ninja, policeman, solider, or other can put themselves in harms way and not have something bad happen. Read the news and look at what happens when good people put themselves in harms way. So, in reality the TMNT may not last a week before some idiot with a gun just shoots one and thats all she wrote.

its not that there's no way they can come up with to introduce some tension into the story it's that you want to see it where you're used to it coming from. the problem I think is that its been the way it is for so long and that's the way people formed in attachment to it. its always been the turtles as underdogs taking on out numbering armies, larger more physically imposing enemies or guys who were just better skilled fighters than they were and watching them rise to the occasion so when you give them a power boost some of the appeal goes out the window. its the same with any character really people came to like them based on who they are and what they can do. if you were to suddenly change the personality or the power set you lose some of what brought people in. with thor for examples his fans like him because of his god status and they expect it to be there going in. you strip that away and make him a mutant from earth who can control lightning or whatever and you're likely going to turn some people off.

I agree the turtles are bigger this time probably in the 6 foot range compared to 4'9" to 5'1" like previous incarnations. I just hate people equating being 6ft talk to being a "hulk" or huge...if being 6ft tall is the same as a 9ft tall 600lb hulk then somebody is doing funny math, and i know teens easily 6ft tall. And like others I do prefer the smaller look to the turtles but I dont think making them 6ft tall means they still cant be underdogs. Obviously look at shredder. And while shredder seems to be taking flack for having "huge machetes"...seems like most shredders have been over the top...the 2012 TMNT shredder has like 3ft long retractable blades and then a center retractable sword come out of each arm.

We've only seen the collapsable bo staff from the trailers to the various posters and concept art to the action figures to the childrens costumes and role playing toys.

Realistically speaking (I know that's not something Michael Bay gives even a hintof a crap about even in non sci fi movies) a collapsable staff shouldn't be as strong as a regular bo.

If he starts off with a wooden bo and upgrades I wouldn't mind too much but that seems unlikely.

Unrealistic stories have serious situations all the time. This week's Nickelodeon episode featured a guy who skated through the air on beams of light, and threw laser mohawks as a weapon. It didn't make the situation less dire. My favorite episode of the original cartoon was when Leo doubted his ability to lead, and quit the team, leaving the other turtles struggling without him. That episode also featured Shredder draining the sun with a laser. The serious-and-absurd combination is the premise of TMNT. From the original sketches, TMNT was born out of that.

That being said, I do believe that a story needs to "follow some sense of logic." But it sets its own parameters. People are getting bent out of shape about Donnie's bow, but it may very well makes sense in the context of the film.

I know.. I believe this will happen with a lot of things that some people are bent over..
Context makes a big difference. Just like some, after the first trailer were doubting that there wouldn't be any Martial arts/fighting, that they wouldn't be ninja's. I think that this was a premature thing to get upset over being that we'd only seen 90 seconds of footage. Imo I think a lot of things will be proven wrong once the film is released in it's entirety.

One minute it's "the Shredder has blades all over, how can the turtles beat him"
and the next it's " the turtles are huge, how can they even be challenged I want them to be the underdogs".
Well they get captured.. I remember in the first film.. the Turtles weren't challenged by the Foot at all.. they creamed them in every battle. Until they met the Shredder.. then Splinter took him out in one swoop.
It took like 50 Foot to take down Raph all by himself.. It's the same question I have when discussing the " Teenage Mutant" part being smaller than the "Ninja Turtles". Respectfully.. If it wasn't a problem then, why is it a problem now?

Yes, I would've liked a more traditional TMNT film approach. Yes, I don't prefer how they are stronger and more beefed up (however, they are NOT Hulks). I agree they should be more "underdogs", and I agree they didn't necessarily have to scale everything up.

However, at least for me, even through my conflicts with this movie, I've come to accept the things I don't prefer. This, overall, IS TMNT. "Things Change", as the first episode of the 2003 series states. It's true. We may not really like some of those changes, but at least for me, I've come to accept it. To look past those small qualities I haven't liked being changed, knowing this is a different (and possibly temporary) take. Through doing that, I've actually started enjoying what I've seen from this film, and getting excited for it. Action looks great, and even though I don't PREFER some changes to characters and such, I'm excited to see where the film takes us WITH those changes.

The sci-fi part I don't have problems with (whether its light or dark toned) and I agree with the mix of absurd situations with serious life-threatening peril, just as long as the film follows its own rules of logic; otherwise if there are plot holes, then...:ohwell:

Personally what's distracting me (and part of the reason I'm looking disfavorably at this movie) is the fact that these Turtles are hulkish and doing superhuman things (Donnie's bo), where it appears to draw away from the swift ninjitsu fighting that should be in the forefront of the movie for a TMNT movie. I don't know... with these Turtles being so strong and big it almost makes ninjitsu fighting obsolete in a way, when they could individually throw large vehicles against trucks, lift a vehicle with a bo, and swat soldiers like flies in causing more effective destruction rather than bothering with their piddling ninjitsu fighting.

I mean it could make sense in the movie's parameters like you said, but it seems more estranged from the TMNT we would expect (or at least I would expect). If you catch my drift... :ohwell:

Actually, yes. Thor is my favourite. And he has a lot of struggles in that movie. But he didn't overcome his problems with brute strength, that was kind of the lesson he had to learn in that movie.

That said, one of my favourite adventure movies is DragonHeart! I'm also really fond of the original novel version of the Hobbit, but not so much the film or Lord of the Rings. And speaking of adaptations, I loved V for Vendetta's film and Watchmen's. And while they're not movies, the Metal Gear Solid games rank up in favourites for me, and they contain enough cutscenes to be movies anyway. :trazz:

EDIT: If you want something a little more current, I enjoyed Pacific Rim, too.

You're right, it wasn't a car.

It was a freaking TRUCK! With just his bo staff!

Clearly, real world physics are going to be ignored in this film.
I think this is sad. I don't think they had to do it this way. I like what I see otherwise in the trailers. But I certainly don't like that the Turtles seem to be super super strong.

1. Donnie's bo staff made of metal and not wood.
2. It is retractable.
3. Trailer shows him using a button to open the staff. Could require a heavy spring for mechanism.
4. Donnie says, " I've always wanted to try this" as to show he intended it to be strong enough to flip a vehicle or lift something heavy.
5. Momentum of vehicle + retractable metal bo staff with button mechanism that was intended to have a very heavy spring that was strong enough to lift a vehicle or something heavy = logical movie premise.

Could I be missing something that would otherwise get me to think that in this films universe this is logically fallacious?

Of all the things to nitpick about... seriously, I think Donny's use of his staff in that scene was pretty cool. I'm fully expecting we'll see him do a lot of this kind of stuff in the film: use his brains and gadgets to accomplish things over his physical ability. That's what he's known for, right?

I'm not a physicist... :P BUT, it's not like the vehicle hit an immovable rod. His weapon has flex to it. If his bo had no bend on impact maybe it would have impaled the vehicle or broke, but since it has flex it was able to catapult it. Also it depends on where the impact took place.

In the end... films often take a more "romantic" approach to events in order to get events to play out in a more interesting way. Nothing at all new about this! I get that people want to try to examine why something could/couldn't actually occur, that can make for some interesting discussion... but for me personally? I just want to see cool stuff happening :)

And that is why I enjoyed the first films so much.. enjoyed a lot of things so much..
My brothers and I.. We were kids.. minds wide open. We didn't go in with a note pad and pencil ready to pick apart everything and anything.. not one ounce of cynicism or skepticism.. at least I didn't.. We enjoyed it for what it was.. a movie about the TMNT. Imo.. most kids could care less about the Boom Boom M. Bay and all of the other negativity that goes with it. But of course.. You're not getting what I'm saying. Scaling up the heroes requires scaling up the enemies and raising the stakes, which takes it to a realm I'm not as interested in because every other superhero does that. I like the ninja turtles because they don't have super strength. They have abilities that you and me could have, if we trained for them. That's what makes them heroes, to me.

I could very well be taking in the wrong Superman stories. But what I did see, I didn't find very interesting, because he's just this guy with all of this insane power. We know he's going to win, even if he has to struggle a lot to get there. There isn't anything underdog about Superman. He's just "cool".I'll give you that. Superman is definitely not an underdog. But we always know the hero is going to win.

If that is your preference is scale, that is your preference.

I just mean that Superman is a unique kind of hero. It's not about whether he can beat the other guy, it's about what he chooses to do with tremendous power. They say absolute power corrupts absolutely, but Superman still believes in freedom and justice. He's humble and kind. It's like, if one man can have all that power and still be good, then there's that much more reason to have hope in humanity. He can't be that with less power.

Your argument that it is a truck did not dissolve my arguments at all. He states in the trailer he has always wanted to do this. So that shows intention to create a mechanical bo staff that could lift a vehicle or heavy objects once the staff is opened. The object being a truck makes no difference. Now if set truck ends up being a unliftable mechanical bo staff truck, then you have a great argument for it being a truck.

I really don't see what the big deal is. We don't know how Donnie's bo is rigged up, but I'm guessing probably some kind of spring loaded metal. A carjack can lift a car so why wouldn't his bo be able to?

The car is already going down a bumpy slope so I don't think it'd take much to launch it into the air. And a lot of people are saying he flips the car, but that's an exaggeration.

Could be something he made up on the fly using some of the gadgets found at the lab that they are taken to, we've seen the pictures and gifs of Raph with all his brothers weapons on him and the bo is black and this thing he launches the car up with is metal.

We haven't seen the entire scene to really say if he flipped the car or if he just delayed it or if it'll flip on its side and crash. The metal bo could possibly retract down and and up again and go through the engine block disabling it.

Ok ill say this. I can buy the staff causing the thing to lose control because its jacked up suddenly on one side or even tip over completely but doesn't it go flying over his head? I watch a lot of comicbook movies and yes suspension of disbelief is required but the good ones usually don't break the rules of reality without some kind of in universe justification. if donnies bo turns out to be made of some kind of unbreakable super metal then cool launch all the motor vehicles you want. If not and its just an average ordinary retractable staff then having the force from that stick have that kind of effect on that jeep/truck is just giving physics the finger.

I find it a little ironic that in one sentence you state that you are treating this film as a "cartoon" and then in the next sentence you claim it not to be a kids film.

It's has been said by people working on this movie that " kids are a different animal today "
and that they could get away with making a little more of an edgy TMNT film than way back when.

Remember what Andre Nemec said during an interview?

What would you say is the age range for this one? How young an audience can appreciate it?
Nemec: Not having children, a child between the age of three and 16 is pretty much all the same to me. (Laughs) I really don't know. I do think that the kids that go to see "Transformers" and the kids that go to the big comic book movies will really enjoy it. There's nothing sort of overtly gross or offending in our material. The canon can, again, be quite irreverent at times in some of its forms, but we didn't make it gross. I mean gross by 12-year old standards

Why are we even debating this?

Edit: Just an honest question ok.. Why.. if this thread was moved from this area.. did you post it twice? Was there a reason why you HAD to have it in here? Just wondering

I watch a lot of comicbook movies and yes suspension of disbelief is required but the good ones usually don't break the rules of reality without some kind of in universe justification.

The "good ones" is purely observational. But that aside.. Whether it be the Avengers, Spiderman, Superman, Hellboy, X-men, Batman.. imo these are great movies.
But I don't understand how anyone can say that " Donnies Bo flipping an SUV" is "breaking the rules" and that these other CB films haven't with their Characters.

I don't understand the need for the poking and prodding when it comes to these things. It's a CBM.. These things make films more enjoyable if people would just leave the skepticism/cynicism at the door and just enjoy it for what it is.. a movie. It's nice to just let go of reality and allow yourself to be sucked into another world.. I don't think that scene was tooo outrageous. But that's me.. It's one thing to just.. not like it.. not everyone has to like everything.. When it comes to myself.. Scenes like the Hummer scene and the shot with Donnie are very cool. Considering this being a CBM.. To look at something like that and say " that wouldn't happen in real life" is just missing the entire point. In my opinion. I guess it's just about preference.. what you want and don't want in a movie.. But I'm not going to pretend that what I see in other CBM's is justified or any less improbable than the scene with Donnie.. just me

Comic book movies have varying degrees of "reality". A film like Superman is miles away more fantastic and full of more super-powered feats then say a Batman or a Kick-Ass movie. The Turtles have always been, despite the extreme craziness of their origins, portrayed as characters who have no super powers, just a decade and a half of martial arts training. That's part of what makes them appeal to a lot of people.

It'd be like taking Superman and striping him of all his powers. Those are what makes him Superman and what fans are often looking for.

Yes because one of the people of the movie is going to actually go out there a limit the potential viewing audience. He would get fired on the spot.

BTW, a kids movie and a movie that is ok for kids are two different things.

The viewing audience for Transformer was straight up teenagers, that movie had its goofy stupid crap but it was in no way a movie for kids. Kids could see it because there werent that many serious things but that was not the target audience.

And , based on what we are looking at now, this movie seems to follow the same tone.

I understand.. but to claim what is right or wrong for TMNT? to dictate what direction the franchise should head in for everyone else? I understand that some dislike what they've done.. but to say it's wrong for TMNT or that it has no basis in TMNT or that this is all change for the sake of change 2 months before the movie comes out? It's a bit premature imo. Just bc someone has a preference doesn't make it " right or wrong " for a new modern day reboot of a live action trilogy. Well let the success or failure of this film make that determination. And they still don't have "super powers". Maybe there is a reason why they're stronger than before. I don't think it's totally crazy to make a mutant turtle ninja stronger than a human being but that's me. This is why I sometimes suggest " waiting to see the movie ". I'm not telling anyone to " not speculate " about the film.. But a lot of the things being said aren't speculation.. they're blanket statements about things that need context to make a solid judgment on, without context it becomes a prejudgment imo. Context is very important. Donnie has ALWAYS had gadgets.. he used a mechanism on his bo staff. Something that in 2014 shouldn't be that much of a stretch let alone for a CBM. Sometimes I wonder if they would have done some crazy things with the 1990 film if they had the tech. Eastman talked about that in regards to this film.. he's been able to do a lot of things that they weren't able to do before. Bc of the technology and big budget.
It is simply to early to say that these turtles wont know martial arts or wont be ninjas.
Even though we've seen short shots of them using martial arts. Megan Fox calls them Ninjas in that short line. So it's all speculation really.. at this point. Imo.. I think they will be ninjas.. I think they will be teenagers, I think that they will be mutants, and they are OBVIOUSLY turtles. To me.. that's what matters. I think they will fight better than they ever have, and that the fight scenes will be more technical, more intense than ever. The special effects 20 years later give them the ability to do more. So I think everything that made them what they are will be included.. their personalities and capabilities. They are not trying to make the 1990 movie again. This is a different interpretation. It's a new telling of the story. Something fresh. If it's done well.. and becomes very successful, growing the franchise while bringing in a whole new wave of fans, then I take that as a good thing. it's about what's good for the franchise , and right now it's to early to tell

I swear lol.. One minute some of you are claiming that this film will not be edgy or gritty bc of the "Nickelodeon" heading and now I'm reading that it wont be for kids.. at all.

Are you suggesting that kids aren't apart of the "target audience"? Why are you splitting hairs with such an obvious observation? Transformers didn't have preteens "KIDS" in the audience? Are you kidding me? I saw LOTS of kids when seeing Transformers.. every single film. You're coming out and saying that this isn't a kids film.. contradicting what the film makers and people involved have said. It was obviously MADE for kids, AND for the older generation of TMNT fans. WILL IT BE APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN? How can you say for sure that is isn't? and no you cant make that judgment based on a 90 second trailer. In which I saw nothing inappropriate for kids to see. It's been said that this film was made partially for a whole new generation of fans. With the new Nick toon and this being a Nickelodeon film I'm not going to call anyone a liar either. This movie was obviously made for a wide range of ages. When I go see it in theatres I'm sure ill see lots of kids, probably all huge fans of the Nick toon. They know that this is a huge demographic that they need to pull in.

I cant believe this is even being disputed..

Never said anything of the sort.
You must be confusing me with some one else.

Are you suggesting that kids aren't apart of the "target audience"?

Yeah, from what we see this seems like a standard PG-13 flick is more leaning towards an older crowd.

Why are you splitting hairs with such an obvious observation?

I'm not splitting hairs i am making a point.
A kids movie and a movie can kids can see are not the same thing.

Transformers didn't have preteens "KIDS" in the audience?
Are you kidding me? I saw LOTS of kids when seeing Transformers.. every single film.

Of course it did, it's a movie that can bee seen by kids.

Did the film makes say it's a kids film?
Or did they say this film can be seen by kids?
Cause that quote you use the dude is clearly saying that this film will be fine for kids. Not that it will be a kids movie.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. We wouldn't question this stuff in a cartoon, or a comic book. But there's something about shooting something with a camera that makes everyone say, "They had better explain this, because it needs to make sense."

It's just like how people can't accept a dramatic, mature story if it's animated. Animation can only be for kids. It just doesn't make sense to me.

That's because cartoons and comics have more time to explain where the wacky stuff came from. The 2k3 tmnt didn't have random people using blasters until after the triceraton invasion and they didn't add future tech to their lair after their trip to the future. But there are entire episodes and seasons to explain where all this came from. For all the wacky stuff Marvel and DC does there's always some past issue or story arc to explain it and then it continues to get expanded upon. It has some sort of explanation within that world...and even then The rest of the world continues to function the way our world does to make the weird stuff stand out.

I doubt the movie is gonna explain where Don got the bo (or the strength) to flip a truck. Nor should he. Just like raph shouldn't be able to slam into a Humvee without getting knocked the hell out.

The turtles never had super strength either. And that argument about being able to do more now than what they could in the 90s is bs. They could do way more in the current batman movies than they could in the Burton era and they didn't make Batman fight with a life saber just because 'they can'.

Honestly I think you people try too hard to defend this. There's being a fan and then there's extreme blind devotion. And don't give me that crisp about we haven't seen the movie yet. LOTS of movies have trailers that you can already tell the movie is gonna suck based on what is shown. And there aren't legions of people desperately trying to explain away why the trailer clearly shows. It's like a transformers movie where Prime was a jet instead of a truck. The trailer will clearly show prime as a jet. And the lot of you will be explaining away or making wacky half-assed theories on how somehow the trailer is wrong and he'll still be a truck all along.

Just like all the wacky Oroku Saki is not a renamed Eric Sachs theories.

:teek: Wow. You've never seen anything TMNT-related in your life then...

Or you just happened to once again be completely oblivious to certain things like Raph twirling and throwing a mutated rhinoceros (that was meant to be the more realistic version of the original series mind you) or countless times where the Turtles sent people literally flying by a single kick or punch in the 2K3 & 2012 Series.

Kinda think flipping a truck without breaking the stick or messing up your muscles is a lot different than your examples.

As the show went on the writers seem to forget that bebop and rocksteady are supposed to be stronger (and heavier) than regular people and couldn't even accomplish simple tasks they should he able to. I'm quite it would look a lot less realistic if raph did that to rocksteady in live action unless rocksteady was a real small dude.

The second example is weak. Lots of heroes and even live action heroes seem to send people flying with their punches and kicks without super powers. It's just cartoon/movie physics.

Fact of the matter is the tmnt, aside from their hard shells for extra protection, have no real super powers or super strength. Just their ninja skills.

I'm talking about fantasy worlds were things aren't expected to work like ours.

When Moe hits Curly on the head with a hammer, you don't require plausible explanation as to why Curly's not injured. You realize that this is a world in which hammers don't cause serious injury, and when Larry gets burned with an iron, it makes sense. The rules of that universe simply don't match ours.

The people in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon didn't have superhero origin stories. Neither did the ex-boyfriends in Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

My original complaint was that people rarely let go and allow that to happen with live action, but anything goes if the movie is animated. I'm surprised I came up with three examples.

Usually movies like these take place in a 'real world' where the only weird things are whatever the movie is about. Otherwise the turtles wouldn't be a big deal cause April would already be working for a talking aardvark and be paying rent to a mutant plant. The three stooges take place in a comedic world and sometimes even the non-stooges act like it's weird or surprising that curly can take that much damage to his head while moe and Larry act like nothing is weird.

Crouching Tiger is also an exaggerated world where martaul arts somehow make you leap several feet in the air.

Tmnt is obviously supposed to take place in a realistic world despite all the mutants and aliens and other monsters. Otherwise the turtles could just walk around like regular people and April can just whip out a giant mallet out of her purse and bash the foot soldiers herself.

Movies always have some suspension of disbelief. Especially in a movie about talking turtles were supposed to believe could happen. But don't go overboard with the cartoon physics or it'll look obviously fake.

Sorry for the hate. I'm just confused that on a forum for tmnt fans this movie isn't burnt to a crisp with all the mess ups and needless changes it has. It's like... Are you even fans of the characters? This is about as true to the series as the Mario movie was to the games and yet everyone is acting like the best movie ever. It honestly boggles the mind for me. I'm sorry but for me it does look like blind devotion. Like no matter what crap they put out, as long as you slap tmnt on it you'll all flock to it and make it sell like pancakes. I remember lots of posts back when we still thought they'd be aliens of people saying it doesn't matter how horrible the movie might be as long as it's out there in the public eyes. But why take a chance on something do horrible so that tmnt will be benched until someone else gets the rights?

I'll stop the hate for now. But honestly. I just don't see it. This just isn't tmnt. And yet the vast maturity is ready to welcome this crap with open arms. Might as well make a Venus feature film. I'm sure you'll flock to it too. And defend it til the day you die.

This guy just doesn't understand opinions...

Btw there ARE a ton of things I hate about this new movie (I'm not blindly devoted to it.) just like with every single movie. No movie is perfect! Wether you like it or not, it IS TMNT and it will be a smash hit based everything we know!

If you guys are tired of the arguing, consider this statement from original post:
With Leo landing and creating craters, Raph back-handing some one to space, his destruction of the Humvee, Mike with the rocket skateboard, and now Don flipping a truck with his bow... it's pretty obvious that any sort of logic has been thrown out the window.

That "any sort of logic" is exactly what Coola and I were discussing. We were so on topic, it's not even funny.

I suppose I'm sort of a gray area. And doubt that I'm alone.

A lot of things I'm willing to let slide because this is just one film and aren't that big of a deal, to me.

Like you (I assume) I will be skipping the theater because the one part that is vital to me - appeal and recognizability of the Turtles - isn't there. I can't find a feeling as if it's actually them.

On topic... Really I could largely ignore the absurd anti-physics, even if I'd find it a little hypocritical after all the "we're making/want it as realistic as possible" chanting. Though if they'd seem a bit too super powered that's kind of annoying and possible loss of feeling a connection with characters that are normally a lot more on our level.

I don't mind. My favorite move from Raphael in any of his incarnations is him flinging his Sai and it hits it's target, dead on. I don't care that Sai aren't meant for that, with Raphael, he's the best damn Sai master in the universe, and he can do anything he damn well pleases with them! or any movies in which the heroes are in extraordinary circumstances, in general, and had to overcome obstacles with extraordinary strength?

if not, what action/adventure movies DO you like?

There are plenty of entries out there explaining why Die Hard is one of the greatest action movies ever made while the new Die Hard movies are pretty sucktastic.

It can largely be boiled down to "you take away his shoes and you shatter glass." :D

You humanize the action hero by emphasizing his weakness, not his strengths. In the first film, McClain was the true American action hero, but he was unquestionably the underdog in that film as well.

Well, the Sai secondary as a throwing weapon there are techniques where you throw the Sai at the opponent's feet. One of the reasons why carrying three Sai was not uncommon.

and how do we know from the tiniest tidbits of info that we've gotten that the turtles won't have their "shoes taken away".

the point i was responding to wasn't that there aren't going to be any obstacles, it was that with the *apparent* buffing up the turtles have gotten, the obstacles are going to be easy to overcome.

(my response was that thats not necessarily true and that the obstacles would just be that much more buffed up as well.)

i totally agree that great drama in these types of stories comes from the heroes overcoming their weaknesses.

Well, not quite. And mind you, I might be getting stories mixed up, so here goes. After Raph knocked out Leo, he went after the Shredder, but the Shredder nearly beat him to death until Leo showed up, and then Raph admits that Leo was right, and lets him deal with the Shredder himself, which in turn, Leo does overpower and lay waste. What I remember of it. I don't think Leo in the comics is like Leo in the last few cartoons we have had. He's not a show boater, or is arrogant about his accomplishments. He says what needs to be said and takes care of business when it needs to be taken care of. In other words, I just don't see him as the revenge type of guy, especially towards his brothers.

Cartoony things from this last trailer.

Leo throwing a foot soldier at a moving train...
The cartoony part is not that person doesnt blows up into a rain of body parts but that the person actually goes through the window of a moving train cleanly. :o I actually went, "Holy crap!" and had to stop and rewind. That was nuts.

Don blocking bullets with his bo, that's straight up anime.

Does Shredder have control over the blades he shoots? Cause near the end he is shown getting them back? His armor was turned into a power suit so... i guess that's a new power?

One really strange thing was that when Leo was hit by the truck..... no damage happened. What up with that? If Raph can wreck one why not Leo? Is Raph like World Breaker Hulk that is stronger than any of the other Hulks?

I am surprised at how most of you are so disconnected by the fact that the turtles are more bestial than human. Do not judge the turtles as if they are human instead judge them as if they are beasts, which they are.

You only need to take facts from the animal kingdom to get an idea of how powerful these turtles are. Perhaps, Raphael's strength is equal to a bear's strength. Since bears are capable of tearing vehicles apart. The quick reflexes of any predator or animal can also be a good comparison for the turtle's capabilities. A lion can strike quickly and hit multiple times before a human can even react. Maybe, the turtles have cat-like reflexes, lol, to deflect projectiles with their weapons. What I am trying to say is the turtle's strength and speed is realistic if you compare and judge them as you would with an apex predator.

I would like to mention humans are actually capable of what we perceive as superhuman traits. A man is capable of smelling just as good as a detection dog. Strong people are capable of bending metal and demolishing vehicles with their strength, velocity or technique. People are also capable of amazing parkour and endurance skills. Some people are capable of deflecting arrows and controversially a bullet. Humans are not as weak as we once thought. Recent studies show that we are capable of amazing things if we put enough time and dedication into them.

Considering that the turtles in the movie are created as weapons. I think the physical possibilities are enhanced. Taking what is already possible and imagining if it was enhanced I can see the plausibility behind the turtle's strength and speed.

They were shooting those M4s full auto and extremely close range. At that range with that firing mode nothing is going to miraculously going to slow down any significant speed... it's a total comic book scene.
And Leo actually hits the windshield and bounces of with no damage being shown. So now we have varying physics/properties in this world... MEGA comic book.

Candy Kappa

Yeah, it's comic booky and implausible. But in comparison to other things we've seen...

At least with Leo, it was a last resort option as he was about to be mowed down, it's similar to other stunts I've seen regarding landing on cars in speed.

To me at least, the Leo and Don scene is more digestible and acceptable in comparison to Raph's car bowling.

And by Don scene I mean the bullet deflecting, not the car flipping, that stuff is hilarious.

Not only suspend it in the air, but also wave it around like you just don't care! :tlol:

Yet another "F*ck It, It's Just A Movie" to add to the tally.

Verisimilitude. A concept absolutely nobody working on this movie can spell, let alone define or invest in.

I hate that sh*t. I KNOW I'm watching something fake, ya goobers, you're supposed to trick me into believing your nonsense for two hours, not wink at me the whole time. BAH.

If you can be tricked into believing that a movie about talking ninja turtles is believable, I have some bad news for you.

Yeah yeah, I've heard it before. "It's all fake, it's all stupid, shut off your brain, etc." Every fantastical concept has to have over-the-top execution because it's all so unbelievable anyway.

In that case, everyone in every movie gets a jetpack and a bazooka, because there's literally no reason NOT to have one. Nothing at all matters when you can just pull the "It's All Fake" card and just Deus Ex Machina your way out of any situation.

I know I've railed against the so-called Crisler's Law BS many times in the past, but there's a subtle distinction between "Things have to be super-serious and realistic" and "It's all fake, just go balls-out ridiculous."

In the end, movies that take a ridiculous premise and present that premise believably in a real-world setting make lots of money and tend to be fondly-remembered years after the fact. "It's All Just Dumb Fun" movies tend to flame out quickly and become the kind of "How Lame Were We Back Then?" fodder for Hal Sparks and Co. on those "I Love The (Decade Here)" shows. This movie is 100% in the "Dumb Fun" camp. Just sayin'.

I like my movies a little more "Batman Begins" and a little less "Batman and Robin", myself.

You know the turtles origin right? I bet you also know that there's no actual chemical that will turn a turtle into humanoid talking mutant. I just don't understand why people are losing their sh!t on Donnie's staff when this franchise is full of non-logical stuffs.

Yeah, I prefer watching the better movie too. Unless I wanna waste my time watching a terrible film just to say on the internet how terrible it is.

But, the Ooze usually have a logical explanation, it's not just tossed into your face with no rime or reason.

I agree they should have explained that in the trailer.

Because, there is fine line between fantastical stuff and ridiculous.
Even in unrealistic setting there should be an inner logic.

And no matter which way you look at it, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will always be ridiculous. Sorry to break that for you people expecting Citizen Kane...

The fact that so many of you think it has to be 100% one way or the other is an huge part of the problem with all movies in general these days.

I don't think it has to be 100% my vision of the Turtles because I know that it never will be. And people who can't grasp that little concept need to grow up and wake up

Not what he meant...it can be equal parts ridiculous and realistic...or some blending of the 2. Being 100% one way or the other is dull.

I mean the thinking that a movie either has to be completely "Dark Knight" serious or "Dead Or Alive" levels of stupid/"funny". That's damaging. Studio people go into making movies already thinking that the entire audience is too stupid to understand any kind of depth, subtlety, or nuance. Must we tell them they're right, that we only want it all one way or the other?

It's like Venkman said... "I don't have two grades of laundry, okay? There's not just 'Clean' and 'Dirty'.... there are maaaaany subtle levels." Hollywood no longer seems to think so, however. That's a huge problem.

EDIT: Jester so gets me. Consistently, and thoroughly. :)

That's part of the reason the 90's Turtle movie works for me. It has a lot of subtly in there that make it just as good today as it was when I was 6 and didn't notice.

Well, we're already seeing that with this movie. There are some serious elements but they're overshadowed by the campiness of it all which is inherently Ninja Turtles!

I agree with your point but it matters what property we're talking about. Take Batman Begins, it tried so hard to be dark and gritty that it missed out on the 'fun' that comes with a guy dressed as a bat. There's a level to how serious you can take the subject matter and to me at least, it became laughable!

This movie was always going to have action.

So wait... so because some people laugh at cartoon logic movie studios are confuse on how to make a movie?

We are not discussing the tone of the movie we are discussing some of the scenes where any sort of logic gets thrown out the window because stuff just happens... like in a cartoon. You can still do crazy stuff but if you presented in a certain way it can come off as ok in that world.

All the Nolan Batman movies have super fake stuff all over but people are ok with it because they explained all of the tech. And even in crazy fighting movies like the Raid where one dude can take on everyone the scenes are shot in ways that you can almost think this is possible.

Now, if the movie says the staff is Utrom tech then it's all cool. They sort of have explained the super turtles with the hero formula being a weapon but that does place the movie in the comic book side like Hulk.
