View Full Version : The Cartoons, and subsequent Cinematic Legacies

Think about it, the level of popularity of each animated series is exemplified in their big screen legacy.

The Wolf Toon's popularity inspired 3x insanely popular live action 90's films.
The 2k3 series popularity led to luke warm, animated 2007 film.

And now the Nick Toon's popularity inspired a new, big budget, live action reboot. Is there potential here for the Nick Toon to have inspired a better cinematic legacy than even the Wolf Toon? I'm sure this reboot will outperform the 90's films box office wise. Quality wise it will probably trump all the previous films apart from the 1990 original.

How many decent quality films produced by PD can we as fans potentially expect? I feel TMNT is inherently stronger material than Transformers, and even has a stronger mass, and niche appeal. Could we see 4 films from this new branch of the franchise?

If the franchise maintains its current momentum, and the first film isn't a box office bomb, we could probably expect two more films for a trilogy.

The only thing I would question would be the degree of success these PD films and the Nick series contribute to the franchise when compared to Turtlemania, after inflation-adjustment, because TMNT still hasn't made quite the impact onto the adult mainstream yet that Turtlemania did in the past. This movie is its big chance to either succeed or fail in doing so.

I'm predicting it will be successful since most Bay-associated films are, but the fact that so many aspects of the film (from what we've seen) has been taken to extremes (extreme strength, extreme visual stereotyping, etc.), it won't be met with any type of critical respect by movie critics, reinforcing the stereotypical notion amongst the general public that TMNT is for the "comic nerd demographic and young kids".

Personally I thought "30 years" may have been more of the inspiration. When did they start the initial pre-production of this vs when the new Nick series started?

Not true. This movie was put into production immediately after the Nickelodeon purchase just like the new cartoon.

I am sooo glad you said that.. Bc I agree 100%. I believe that TMNT, at the end of this "trilogy" has the potential to out perform the Transformers series. I definitely can see us getting 4 TMNT films and just the thought of it makes me very... VERY excited.
I actually hope Bay takes over for TMNT 2. He's rumored to be leaving the Transformers franchise.. So I hope he makes TMNT his #1 priority :D

Well I think Nick knew what they were doing and that these two projects were mutually exclusive. It's obvious that the film has taken some inspiration from the cartoon and will feed off of some of it's success. Yes it was put into production but the cartoon still had two years to build popularity for the franchise.. which would obviously help the film when it came to pulling in a new generation of kids. So in a way.. it is true imo

The film we are getting in August is a completely different film from what Peter Laired and John Fusco were planning..

Imo.. A small vocal minority are complaining.. and that minority will get smaller and smaller as they market this film and release better trailers like the one we just saw. Trust me I see WAY more people excited for this on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.. Even this site where it seems that most people are negative.. look at the poll.. BY FAR most people will be there in the theatres to see it.. even on opening night.. I just think that the negative folks are more consistent in stating their opinions than someone excited to see it.. They usually just say " YES!!! im so going to see this" and then move on. Others that hate it on forums and social media? Will state their reasons over and over and over again. It's just the way it is imo.

Well, a shirking amount of complaints I feel may also be in large part to people simply settling down with their criticism after having this long at this point to deal with it.

Had I ended up on here sooner I'd have prob had more of my own say (and made a more negative first impression lol), esp with reading over all the threads and posts I was lurking on. But it took a number of days for my account to get accepted and really it was probably for the best. My opinion has not changed, but the wait gave my feelings over what I don't like time to cool off first. I imagine I'm not the only one who has calmed down by now, even if I still have the same complaint.

Don't get me wrong.. some complaints are totally justified.. but context makes a big difference depending on the complaint. That's all I'm really saying.

I wonder why it took so long for your account to be accepted?

There hasn't been any communication between the fanbase and the studios, there has been no announcements and no use of social media to actually promote this film. I bet the complaints and whines are falling on deaf ears.

A lot of casual fans will watch something and say, "this looks stupid" and forget about it with no intention of seeing it or just simply ignore it altogether, too. This is site is not an accurate representation of the public. We'll see how it does at the box office after the reviews come in most of the other big name movies have already been out for weeks. I've never said for sure that it's going to bomb, but I think it's got a lot working against it almost regardless of the actual quality.

It won't be a good movie so you don't have much to worry about.

As for a the other post it won't just be casual fans thinking it looks stupid and skip it. It will also be the more serious hardcore fans and people that roughly remember the old cartoon that will also think it's stupid.

Because it is stupid. This movie is the equivalent of having batman and the joker fight it out in batman/joker inspired mechs.... And make it look like that's the way it always should have been.

But I'm not the one saying this movie is already great or awful. There's no way you can judge the whole movie before you've seen it!

I hate every single Theatrical TMNT Movie, (technically I should change my signature to Turtles Forever) and I prefer that one-minute trailer to anything we got before so of course I'm gonna put it down as my favourite.

Difference is I have an actual reason instead of 'OMG Megan Fox, she's terrible in every movie before this and that one character is totally gonna bring the whole thing down.' Or 'Michael Bay? Jonathan Liebsman? That's it. Movie sucks!' Cause as we all know EVERY Director is either good or bad. There are no intermediates and they have no potential whatsoever!

So your reason for liking it is "I hate everything else so this has to be the best by default." whereas people that use the reputations of those involved in the production to predict the quality of the new movie are completely off base. Interesting.

And there couldn't be people that watch that same one minute trailer and feel the opposite of what you do, right?

I'm saying IMO that one-minute trailer was more enjoyable than the entirety of the previous films. I'm not saying the movie's gonna be great, but it's a more valid reasoning than comparing 90-minute movies to this one-minute trailer!

I like Liebesman's style. I love Bay's over the top action "lets have a great time" style of making films. From what I've seen so far "esp. from that last trailer" I am actually pleasantly surprised. I think there was a lot of personal passion behind this film with some of the people involved. Just around the corner my friend.. Hope we get the 2:24 trailer this week :D

... not this again. Disliking Fox's casting because she has not turned in good performances in the past is a perfectly valid reason. If she pulls a decent performance out of her butt in this movie, then I won't have an issue with her casting anymore. At this point in time, I still have an issue because until I have been shown otherwise, her casting has been based on marketing rather than ability. It's great to keep an open mind and give someone the benefit of the doubt, but it's unrealistic to expect people to go through life not judging anyone based on their previous work.

It'd be like expecting the next Nickelback album not to suck.

I understand you love the turtles. I understand you wish this movie would succeed. But stop being blind and see the movie for what it is. A horrible case of fixing what isn't broken mixed with making things extreme for the sake of making them extreme.

Years from now whenever we get a GOOD tmnt movie done right people are gonna look back and wonder what the hell you guys were smoking when you defended this crap so faithfully. Might as well say Batman and Robin was a masterpiece that blows The Dark Knight out of the water.

If I told there would be a tmnt movie with human faced big lip turtles with proton packs, taped up glasses, bamboo armor and a loin cloth fighting a white shredder using basically a shredderized iron man suit a few years ago you'd all laugh me the hell out if this forum.

You honestly think there would have been this intense level of arguing and people taking sides if the movie was actually faithful to damn property it was supposed to be based on???
You see.. was that an opinion based statement? No.. Blame this on the movie makers? Blame what? what are you talking about. Are you under the impression that everyone sees this the way you do? I THANK the movie makers.. Should everyone thank them or blame them? It's OBVIOUSLY up to them.. Different people different opinions.. remember? This is exactly what some of us are talking about. Doesn't seem like "opinion based discussion" when people say things like " Blame this on the movie makers for not doing it right" does it. Hmmm. And your last question? YES!! I do! Bc not everyone is the same dude. Esp. with so many different iterations and so many different demographics associated with this franchise.. If they did a "faithful" film.. whatever that is supposed to mean.. then people would definitely still complain.
if you notice i bolded the word BEFORE for a reason and emphasized on the BEFORE

but i know i am just a whiney hater fanboy troll...i like turtles

Did I call you a whiney hater fan boy troll? Didn't think so. It seems like you over look a lot of the discussion deliberately.

This is getting OLD!!! Do you not agree?

I know i can ignore people i just choose not to..if i cant deal with a little back and fourth i have no reason being on the internet

Bingo.. I AM SO GLAD YOU ADMIT THAT!!. Bc that makes YOU a part of the problem also!
I hope that all of the posters telling us to ignore you guys notice what you just wrote here.
I'll remember this post

There's not that many things unlike the source material guys, and to me these are the best TMNT movie designs, i just love the way they made Leo
i also love how Raph is like a warrior and has such a badass face,
i know many people don't like Donny but i love him! his voice is perfect to me,
I also love mikey's face, and i love his little sneakers,

i know i'm in the minority but this is my favorite TMNT movie so far based on the action and designs alone, i love all the Transformer movies, especially Dark of the moon, so if most people hate this movie, i know i'll love it because i love the TF movies and people really dislike those, yet the general audience seem to love it, with DOTM making a billion.

So based in the trailers the turtles are not giant sized overly accessorized things and the shredder is a Japanese ninja wearing bladed armor and not a robot suit? I musta seen the wrong trailer.

No... I think we saw the same trailer.. we just have different opinions. It's a bit difficult to judge some of these changes saying that they are "change for the sake of change" when you haven't seen the movie. CONTEXT!! Without it everything could be seen as "change for the sake of change".

Remember what Laird said. " It's altogether possible that, in the context of this new movie, these designs will work well and not seem so odd"

And that goes for everything your trying to pass off as general fact.
It's been said to us "positive folk" over and over and over again..
but when a member from your side of the spectrum post things like this we all know what kind of responses we get now don't we lol.. " just bc you feel that way doesn't mean everyone else does, we are just expressing our honest opinions and if you cant except other peoples opinions then ignore them"... it's some how a different ball game when the shoe is on the other foot.

Taken from it but not changed it so over drastically that it's hardly the same thing.

For example, Batman has several versions and a large history to pick and choose from.... But the movies don't turn him into a cyborg that can sprout actual bat wings. Sure it's a new take and a new interpretation.... But it's not batman.

True, but it didn't really reinvent TMNT, i only see a few things changed, Shredder and Turtles, heck even Splinter seems to have the same characteristics, i remember when people were complaining about splinters actor being white, but everything turned out okay.

mk how is that in any way similar to the turtles

turtles

they are still turtles
they are still ninja
they still have the same characteristic
they still have splinter
they were still mutated
splinter is a lab rat
splinter wears a Kimono
shredder is still evil with ties to Japanese culture
He still has bladed (and really isn't much larger then shredder in the new toon

Aprils a reporter,

Karai is shredders daughter

I dont see any Earth shattering "Changes for the sake of Changes" Out right

Shredder has ties to Japan we just dont know how strong the deep those ties are

turtles are not 7 foot tall hulks they are 6' tall buff turtles(the turtles have almost always been ripped)

the clothing is moot, it does not change their character one bit,

Aprils father helping create the turtle is a hint to taking inspiration from IDW shredder creating the turtles is right out of Wolf series,

The foot as just a more "realistic" version of the foot soldiers from the 80's toons who were robots who use laser rifles

There are still a lot of unknowns but nothing like a cyborg bat-winged batman

I hope the people prejudging the movie will at least give it a shot.

You named the only thing this has to do with the tmnt franchise at all. I can also say Chun Li hates Bison cause he killed father, Mario and Luigi still rescue a princess from King Koopa and Goku still helps Bulma find the Dragonballs and uses the Kane Hame Ha.... And look at how their movies turned out.

Hell my bat winged cyborg batman example could still have it be Bruce Wayne wanting revenge for the death of his parents, and his villains could still be Joker and Two Face. It's everything else that's wrong and screwed up.

The clothing is a major part and is definitely not a moot point. Why not make Superman wear orange and the Joker dress in an red suit with blue hair? It's also the fact that for the most part the tmnt got by with headbands and straps and such. Why does all of a sudden after 30 years does it not work and they feel the need to pile extra crap they don't need to be wearing.

The movie is basically saying 'yeah... Your series is kinda ok I guess... But Noone's gonna watch that crap. Don't worthy, we'll fix it up and make it into something that will put butts on seats.

NO i did not the story is still basically the same with small 'Diversions" IN minor details

The Turtles started as turtles Raised by splinter in the sewers after being mutated

Named after artists,

Taught martial arts, By a japanese Rat named splinter,

They are fighting against a evil Genius Who is a man Of power who has connections to Japanese culture, WHo happens to control a Group of soldiers Named foot also with ties to japan, Who happenes to have a daughter Named Karai who is Japanese, And is a martial arts master(now confrimed Via Ultimate visual history)

Shredder has ties to the mutagen

April Who is a news reporter with a camera man Named Vernon who is kind of a downer, Her father worked with the ooze,

Shredder is hunting down the turtles

Each turtles is a master of the own weapons

The Watch over the city during the night to fight crime

They stick to the shadows

Seriously WHAT is this BIG departure from what has come before?

Hell my bat winged cyborg batman example could still have it be Bruce Wayne wanting revenge for the death of his parents, and his villains could still be Joker and Two Face. It's everything else that's wrong and screwed up.
Again what is the huge departure in the turtle that is EVEN close to this "Cyborg bat winged batman"?, Their size? the clothes? Really?? those two thing a pretty superfluous.

It's also the fact that for the most part the tmnt got by with headbands and straps and such. Why does all of a sudden after 30 years does it not work and they feel the need to pile extra crap they don't need to be wearing. They still share that aspects of the opriginal design With "added" culture and personality. THAT IS IT. Leo Samurai (traditional Japanese warrior), Raph Rag tag Brawler, Mikey Surfer skater, Donnie techy Ronin.

If anything this is more similar to the Superman Now where Kryptonian Under armor Verses the Mother made suit that more traditional, or batman now using traditional armored bat suit? Why change Electro to this from this
http://mallsurfer.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/6e22c9eb-81cb-49d1-8bd5-81cef9565970_electro-4.jpg

It doesn't in ANY way take away there character it doesn't drastically change who they are, it wont change how they get things done (except maybe donnie Cuz he can use in tech when ever he needs two)

The movie is basically saying 'yeah... Your series is kinda ok I guess... But Noone's gonna watch that crap. Don't worthy, we'll fix it up and make it into something that will put butts on seats.
Oh so you mean Like every Subsequent Version ever released. Yup changing The krang From the utroms was just change for the sake of change

OR

Could it have been a change that help with the story they are trying to convey???? OH IMAGINE THAT

Maybe like what they are likely doing with this movie But you dont know yet CUZ WE HAVENT SEEN THE MOVIE,

They changed Superman's look for Man of Steel just because they thought red underwear and tights looked cheesy even though that is a time honored look of the character. Batman's look has been changed numerous times. I don't see how this is any different. The extra accessories don't really bother me that much. I think they just stand out because we are not use to them. It makes sense to me that the turtles would accessorize a bit. They are teenagers after all trying to stand out from one another.

Agreed, but I do agree with another here (can't remember who) that said that all the extra accessories might be a hindrance when they gotta stealth it up...because of that point I'm torn, but overall, the new designs just add character; just another layer to enjoy.

Except they never wore anything like that ever. Not even something resembling that. I mean I wouldn't mind I they wore it for a scene or a certain mission or what have you. But not as their default look. It's change for the sake of change. In 30 years they never felt the need to over accessorize. Why now all of a sudden do they feel the need to do so?

And if theses changes go with story they're trying to tell.... Then that just means they're unable to tell a proper tmnt story without changing everything around to hell and back. Then maybe they shouldn't be the ones working on this movie.

I think they just stand out because we are not use to them. It makes sense to me that the turtles would accessorize a bit. They are teenagers after all trying to stand out from one another. well for those two at least I see what I consider to be solid reasoning behind it. Supermans costume has always been a product of the times he was created in and you could argue that the 1930's era circus strongman inspired briefs over your pants look is a little out of place in the new millenium.then there's the fact that in the movie the suit comes from krypton instead of being sewed by his earth mom so having it follow an outdated fashion trend of a singular group of people would've been a little weird. batmans original onscreen look was designed to help people buy into the concept in a realistic setting as it makes more sense for a normal man to fight crime in something that looks like light body armor rather than spandex tights. All the changes we've seen have been variations on that idea made to keep up with the times or make things more comfortable for the wearer. Well except shumacchers suits but those never needed to exist in the first place.
Anyway that's why I'm not really into the turtles outfits in this movie. I don't see any reasoning for it beyond "let's do something different" and then they did it in the most superficial way. Its an interesting artistic interpretation, but its one that I'm just not sold on. I don't see it as an update because the original design is so simple and minimalist it doesn't tie the turtles to any specific time period. If fact I'm tempted to say its the opposite because to me the turtles look more 90's in this movie then that did in the actual 90's. I don't see it as an improvement because in my opinion the original light on accessories approach fits the ninja concept better. Imean think about it if your whole deal is being unseen, hiding in the shadows, striking hard and fading away what good does it do you to have a bunch of loose bits hanging of you or being weighted down with a lot of stuff. I don't know when it comes down to it its not that I'm against the idea of the turtles accessorizing I just think it could've been handled better. As it is its looks like style over substance to me
