View Full Version : If TMNT never existed, what would be your #1 fandom?

Let's say TMNT never existed and Pete/Kevin never drew that first image of a Turtle in 1984. What exactly would be your big fandom right now had it not been for TMNT?
Given I was born in the mid 80's, I'd probably be more of a Batman fan right now. The 1989 Batman movie was a big deal, and B:TAS was a big part of 90's kids childhood. As much as I liked Batman, I never got into the comics or other aspects of it since TMNT was my #1 and I didn't have time for two. I honestly think I'd be posting on some Batman forum right now and have a closet of 500+ Batman comics if TMNT had never existed. It just goes to show you whatever your #1 fandom is takes away from your interest in others.
I might have also gotten more into Spiderman too for the same reason, I dunno. Lost interest in Power Rangers after the first three years and Pokemon was huge but I was already a teenager when it came out so it already came later on for me.

Eh...Batman, Spiderman, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, X-Men, Transformers, DBZ. No specific order really. If not any of those, then probably nothing. I'd probably be doodling or playing guitar which I still do to this day.

Pokemon or Nintendo on a whole, I guess. I'm not heavily into much else outside of those & the turtles.

TMNT is not my No.1 fandom anyway, its Sonic. Turtles are probably second for me along with everything else. I don't have a least favorite fandom so there wouldn't be a 2, 3 and so on.

I wasn't a big action/adventure cartoon watcher (watched the Mario Bros. show if that counts ) when I was young, and even the ones I did watch were not as favored as the comedic cartoons I watched like Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Garfield, and Recess. I don't know if TMNT is my #1 fandom since it can change on my mood, what tone I'm looking for, and how far I want to lean to my childhood or adult interests/hobbies, but it's on my top 4 for sure in terms of franchises/cartoons.
A couple of the reasons why I enjoyed the OT than compared to other action/adventure cartoons was because it was able to effectively balance the comedy and action/adventure (but as we know in the middle seasons, the show did go too far on the slapstick comedy at times), plus the Turtles had a unique camaraderie charisma between them which was lighter and appealing, unlike the looser bonds and contentiousness of X-Men, or the solitary aloof adventures of Superman, Batman, and Spiderman.
But if we're talking about this very moment of what I would be enjoying and being a fan of, it would be more "grownup" drama TV shows like Nashville, Scandal, Law and Order:SVU, etc. With me, I have a low threshold for extreme sci-fi or fantasy TV shows and movies; the only notable exception has been TMNT of course. :P
Gotta go with the Xmen on this one. Always been a fan of the comics and of the world in general, not to mention the movies, games, etc.

I wasn't as much invested into other cartoons as I was into TMNT when I was a kid, so I guess my #1 fandom would be a video game franchise like Mario or Zelda.

Transformers, no question about it. As it is now, Transformers might be my first passion. I was a Transformers fan before I'd ever even heard of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I've always kind of gone back and forth. It was Transformers in the 80's, then TMNT for the most part during the 90's. In the late 90's with Beast Wars/Machines it was Transformers. Then when the 4Kids TMNT series was running, it was TMNT. Finally, with Transformers: Prime it was Transformers.

I've actually thought a lot about this. I think I'm with Powder, and would say Nintendo as a whole, though I'd lean on Zelda a bit.
I'm also a huge fan of Classic Disney animation (Mickey, Donald and Goofy toons) and Warner Bros cartoons. Actually, now that I type that... Animaniacs would probably rival Nintendo as my franchise of choice.

The turtles aren't my number 1 to begin with. Superman is.
Metalwolf
07-02-2014, 12:28 PM
It would be Transformers, especially G1 Transformers. I tried watching the Energon trilogy, but I couldn't get into it. I do like the movies, but I hate the Revenge of the Fallen one. Too much sexual humor and Megan Fox trying to look 'hawt.'
I'd also add Star Wars and some Zelda, as the old Zelda cartoon is more my main Zelda then most of the games, as the only games that 'count' for me are A Link between Worlds and the first two Zeldas.
I don't know yet about the new Zelda game, since that won't come out until 2015.

Lucky for us God gave us Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. In some alternate Earth where they do not exist? Batman. I love the original Robin and Batgirl and the mysteries, and villains. Such a great supporting cast especially classic Batman. I am actually on a Batman forum as I am on here. I was a longtime member on DC Comic's official website message board and now a regular at its successor which you will see in my signature. I am active in both fandoms though I prefer TMNT by far.

For me... I have no favorite fandom. I like a lot of comic characters from DC and Marvel. Batman was what got me into anything and everything superhero related but I treat all my fandoms more or less the same. I get into moods where I'll pay attention to one for months at a time and move on and come back to it later and move on again to another one.
So superheroes/comics characters are my fandom, IF TMNT didn't exist I would have others.

TMNT isn't the only fandom I'm apart of at this moment, I'm also apart of Avatar the last Airbender / Legend of Korra fandom. Once upon a time Harry Potter was my number 1, I just loved the books and films when they were being released. I've also been along time fan of Pokemon since Kanto, though my intrest in the series has died down a little since the BW series. I'm also along time Batman fan and Spder Man fan. Used to be apart of The Simpsons fandom but the newer seasons just suck in my opinion, meh.
P.S
Also long time Scooby Doo fan.

Star Wars since it came to the theatre in 1977. That's been the only constant fandom for me and I still collect it 37 years later. I've also been an avid lifelong table top RPG fanatic (D&D from 1st ed up until and not including 4th ed, Villains and Vigilantes, TMNT and other Strangeness, Cyberpunk,Top Secret, Twilight 2000, SW by West End Games, SW Saga Edition)
My second favorite has changed throughout the years...
Spiderman and Batman from a very young age. I once had all of the Amazing Spiderman comics as far back as issue 57 with a dozen or so earlier ones and a ton of Detective comics (all of which I sold in my early 20s)
and still have a set of Hardee's Super-series Glass Cups from 1977. (Batman,Superman,Batgirl,Supergirl,Wonderwoman,Fla sh,Aquaman,Green Lantern)
TMNT - from 84 till around 89 when I graduated high school.
Then mostly SW for the majority of my adult life until only a few years ago when Nickleodeon bought the franchise and the IDW series was starting. I had a huge nostalgic awakening remembering how much I loved those early TMNT years and the cool dark and gritty atmosphere of the original comic series which led to a renewed passion for the franchise, comic collecting and now a bit of customizing and dioramas which I've just recently been enjoying.

I've always wanted to try and get into Batman comics but I don't have the money or the time to do so. The fact that DC constantly reboots their series doesn't help.
What I like about TMNT is there's only been one major reboot in the comics, and Mirage had a healthy run.

What is IDW then? Unlike Archie which was based on a cartoon universe, IDW was intended to be the new "main" continuity.
Doesn't help matters that Mirage only gets a new issue once every 3-5 years whenever PL decides to release a new issue of Volume 4.

I'd go further and say there's been several comic reboots.
Mirage, Archie, DreamWeave, and now both at IDW.
Sure Archie and DreamWeave are based on the cartoon properties (OT and 2k3 respectively), but those aren't continuations of the previous comic line.

I like a lot of stuff, but other two HUGE fandoms in my life are Batman and Dragonball. If I wasn't into TMNT, it would definitely be between the two of those depending on whether I was in the mood for something dark and realistic or something bright and over-the-top.

Sorry for the double-post, everyone.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that a comic based on a cartoon is a "reboot." Nobody ever called any comics based on Batman: The Animated Series or Batman Beyond "reboots." A reboot is something like The New 52 as opposed to something like Earth One.
As for IDW, that's a huge gray area for me if you wanna get super technical, but in casual speech I might use the word "reboot" even though I usually just refer to it as "IDW's TMNT comic" or "IDW TMNT" when differentiating it from its predecessors.

Its funny how you can't have two #1 fandoms. Like if you have a main one the others become "secondary" or "side" fandoms, like we don't have time for equal support to both.

I dunno, Turtles and WoW are both pretty much equal to me. Been WoW since I started it in 2010 and come back to the Turtles last year after a long time away, but all get their share of attention. My two WoW mains and Leo consist of most of my fave fictional people. :)
I suppose maybe it helps that I can't really have a huge WoW memorabilia collection since it's my own characters that matter to me most, so I guess there is a plus that there isn't a fight for what little display space I have to offer.

Not sure why I'm surprised at how many Japanese properties are at the top of so many peoples' fandom lists. I was never much for anime or manga (is the word japanimation still in use?). Franchises like Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Bakugon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Voltron, Power Rangers, etc have such massive followings but I could never get into it for some reason. I do love my Battle of the Planets based on Gatchaman, however, so hopefully that gives me some street cred.

Anime actually comes from the french word "animation" and is used to refer to any kind of animation in Japan, regardless of its origin. So yes, The Simpsons, Family Guy, etc. are "anime" in Japan. In the West the word is used to separate it from western animation series that get labeled as "cartoons".
I mostly use the word "anime" online. If I happen to talk to someone in real life who is not into anime, I'll just use the term "japanese animation" or "japanese cartoons" since they usually don't seem to recognize the term "anime". Anyway, either term is better than "oh those cartoons from China or something like that" :P

No comics just EU novels in addition to the movies. The only SW comic I've read was a recently released Darth Maul series that takes place after S5 of Clone Wars. I'll probably start following the comics once Marvel takes over and it becomes canon.

For me this is easy because, as others have mentioned, I also have something tied with my favorite things of all time. The two are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog. So without TMNT I probably would have been even more of a Sonic fan, which is hard to believe.
I'm a fan of Sonic through all of the '90's SEGA games of Sonic. Preferring the Genesis games the most. And why it is able to equal my TMNT following is because of the Archie Comics which are still going strong. My favorite two characters of all time are Raphael (TMNT) and Knuckles the Echidna (Sonic). It would be really hard to imagine life without Raph and all of the other TMNT characters though. I'm just glad I don't have to. :tcool:

I got to thinking about it and it's strange, I actually think I'd be a lot more traditionally "feminine" or whatever you want to call it if it weren't for TMNT. I have nothing wrong with that, but when I was way younger I was mostly into horses, alpacas, plush, dolls, etc. Something about TMNT really caught my eye and opened me up to a whole new world of media that I probably would have never known about since it wasn't marketed towards me. It's weird to think about how one little incident like that can really change the way your life plays out. I mean maybe something else would have come along and opened my eyes to so called "boy's" toys, but I was pretty content with just combing my plastic horse's hair or dressing up my dolls at the time so who knows.
If I had to take a guess, I'd probably be bigger into MLP and Hello Kitty than I already am, or just cutesy shows/merch in general. Actually, I'd wager to say I'd be a huge Monster High collector since I've always liked monsters and all that. If it weren't for my toy money going to TMNT mainly it would surely go towards MH. I wonder if there's an alternate dimension where I'm a huge MH fan posting on a MH forum about how my toy money would go to TMNT if MH didn't exist....

I just hate the fact that my number 1 show's first appearance in american was...uggh...Saban's Masked Rider. it was a sickening show. Hey, another RPG gamer! Awesome! I've been into them since my late teens when I was introduced in high school. And like you, I skipped 4th ed D&D completely. (And probably for the same reason.) I got into Mutants and Masterminds, White Wolf Games, SW RPG, Spycraft, D20 and D20 Modern, Pladium's Rifts and Mystic China, and a few others.
Spider-Man has been a long-time favorite of mine as well, as have the X-Men. Both have been favorites of mine since the 90's animated series. And once I got into the comics (thanks, JMS and Peter David!) my love of all things Marvel, and Spidey and X-Men in particular really took off. Not so much with Batman, though I LOVE some of his villains.

This one would be high on my list too! I just recently started collecting the DVD's. It's just such a great story, as well as having some of the BEST characters in animation! I also loved Transformers as a kid, too, so that one would be up there, too.

It's always been Superman. TMNT has never been my absolute main thing, just way up there. Basically, I like it a little less than things I liked before it, and more than anything I've liked after it. As others have mentioned, TMNT kind of came along right when He-Man was drying up - although both officially came out the same year, the TMNT only broke big right when the He-Man hysteria was at its tail end - so it kind of filled that hole for me, too. If there hadn't been TMNT, or if I hadn't gotten into it for some reason, I probably would have put my energy towards getting all the He-Man VHS tapes that had been released up to that point.

By what standard? Sonic Generations was great. Haven't played any of the ones since, but that one was great.

I heard Lost World wasn't too good. Never played it, so I can't confirm it for myself, but... the controls seemed really wonky.
and America can't even get nice things, it's suffering being a digimon fan here. have to put up with a low quality dub and practically beg Bandai of America to localize the videogames.
You're right about the latter, but not the former. I'll defend Digimon dubs until I die.

I flip-flop between Marvel and TMNT as my #1, but if TMNT never existed I might have gotten into gaming, and maybe anime, at an earlier age, because my next fave shows on FoxBox were Sonic X and Kirby: Right Back at Ya, which don't hold up quite as well as TMNT, of course.

To be honest, I won't consider TMNT to be my greatest fandom. It has the status of being the first, but not the greatest in my years of geek/nerd-dom.
Here would be my top 5:
1. Naruto
2. Dragonball
3. Pokemon
4. TMNT
5. Bleach

I love TMNT but I think Ghostbusters is number one for me, you can’t top the movie and the animated series had more quality.
If TMNT never existed my second favorite Franchise would be Masters of The universe.

You remind me alot to my sister :P
By the way what about ghostbusters? according to your avatar you seem to like it
Mine would be Ghostbusters, I support that and TMNT pretty equally.

The tricky part would be prior to the emergence of the Power Rangers since for a time that was my #1 fandom, followed by Star Wars during the 1997 re-release era, then Pokemon, then I'd probably get into He-Man since I got the '80s nostalgia bug during the 2000s, though since that's faded out I would probably have a mix of fandoms, from Star Wars (strong #1 possibility) to Batman to Superman just because those are so iconic. As a child during TMNT's golden era had it not existed, I probably would have continued to like the PBS Kids shows and Disney Afternoon shows equally, though I'd hardly have a distinguished number one, though I'd probably like the Muppets the most due to Sesame Street and Muppet Babies being a big exposure of my early childhood.

I don't really consider TMNT as my #1 fandom, just one of my top favorites. So even if it didn't exist I'd say my #1 would most likely be Batman or Spider-Man.

Never tried it, will have to give it a go. Sonic Unleashed and others that were next gen ruined it for me. Especially Sonic on 360.

Y'know, I had fun with Unleashed for a while, and I really *wanted* to like it, but by the time the last boss fight came around, I was fed up with all the cheap deaths from the poor controls. I was intent on finishing it, got fed up on the last boss and haven't touched it since. There's a few levels that are really fun and deserve to be in a much better game.
I think you'll like Generations. It's a pretty good mash-up of Sonic games focusing mostly only on what works. I couldn't stop playing it and beat it over a long weekend. Thumb cramps like I hadn't had since the NES days. I can't even remember being frustrated with it at any point, unlike Unleashed, where it seemed like I was going, "Ahhh, this F*CKING game..." every five minutes, when I'd miss a jump because Sonic has no shadow underneath him for some reason.

These are my EXACT thoughts, but replace 'Unleashed' with 'Shadow the Hedgehog'. My file still hasn't gotten through that annoying last boss fight.
Haven't had the chance to try Unleashed. :V

This is tough! Tmnt has always been my number 1, a few shows were up there (Thundercats, Ghostbusters, Mighty Ducks) but nothing really could have been a solid replacement during my childhood years had TMNT not existed.
I guess now though if it weren't for TMNT it'd probably be Lilo and Stitch, I have a pretty extensive collection of Stitch stuff.

I have to say I dont have a #1 favorite because my interests are all over the place. I have a decent collection of TMNT stuff. But if they never existed... my music memorabilia, comic collection, comic related statues, cartoon artist signatures, disney related items, movie memorabilia, and I guess sports memorabilia would be a little better than what it is now. It would be nice to own my own misc. museum with all my favorite stuff in it. But until then, my home office is my little museum lol.

Considering I grew up in the late 80's and 90's, if TMNT never existed I just assume I'd be a big Batman fan now. Batman '89 movie came out when I was 4 years old and I saw it with my father. Batman: TAS came out in 1992, and I watched it when it aired, and all the Batman movies after.
However I never read any Batman comics and didn't care about the DC universe as a whole until the late 90's when I watched Superman:TAS and the old movies, and even then I still didn't care much till the early 2000's.
So if TMNT never existed, I kinda assume Batman would be my main thing growing up. I fell out of Power Rangers very quickly (I watched the first series but lost interest), and there was nothing else big at the time till Pokemon in 1998 but I would be a fan of that anyway.

Yep, still a thing.
Ha, that’s crazy.
My serious answer: probably DC and Marvel. I think the last thing I was into before I went all in on TMNT was Dragon Ball. So maybe that, but I kinda doubt it.
