for those who watched the sneak peak last night, you'll notice they said about 10x "this will be the best tmnt movie ever"

I think we all are excited to see ninja turtles back on the screen again, but I didn't like them saying this will be the best TMNT movie ever! c'mon now.. Once you watch the documentary and read about the heart and soul/passion that went into the very first movie, you can never duplicate that amount of hard work.

I didn't appreciate that comment...

It is the best TMNT movie ever... in terms of action. Sometimes you have to pay attention to context.

Me neither, but what are they gonna say? "It'll be great IF you like Bayhem movies, otherwise, go cuddle the DVD of the first movie and cry yourself to sleep?" They have to do their job in promoting the movie.

"Bigger, flashier, and more action-packed"? I can believe all that based on what I've seen so far. "Better"? Ehhhhhhhh........

Yeah, I agree a bit... Had a little bit of an eye twitch moment at that "biggest and best" (or some such wording) comment.

I get it, they're selling their movie and their words are scripted, so.. meh. We'll see if they're so right. Though I agree it's not necessary. Different movies styles, shouldn't need to come off as comparing them, nor put down the old stuff in order to sell this one, which is kinda how that came across to me. If they think their film has striven to be "better" rather than being a continuation of the franchise that made use of technology available today...they're mistaken as that isn't how TMNT works.

I'm sure nothing was prob meant by it other than to excite the audience, but wording could have been different. (Drop two words and it helps... "Bigger than ever," win. "Bigger and better than ever," eh..)

Well, when "Man of Steel" was coming out, I remember them explaining at length that it was "different" than the Superman movies people were used to, but I don't recall them ever having hubris enough to claim it was "better". And it absolutely was different, and it certainly was better than a few of them (not saying much at all). But whether it was "better" than the original or "Returns" is entirely up for debate, and I think that's why they were smart enough not to try and be so presumptuous.

Sometimes, you over-sell, and in the end people aren't even as happy as they might have been, just because you set too high a bar for yourself. "Bigger", in this case, can't be argued. It's definitely bigger. "Better" is only going to be answered by each individual who sees it.

Again, they're just marketing buzzwords, but there's smart and savvy and then there's over-selling it. I don't think when they scripted it they even considered, "Well, some people may not like some of this movie and take offense to us saying it will be 'better'."

I will be bold and say you can easily tell that these guys working on this movie know nothing about TMNT outside the 80s toon, and yes even with the small blurb of the turtles beginnings..you can know where something comes from without knowing anything about it (GOTG)....especially with Vern being a "favorite character" the guy has been in one series of the whole franchise

Why, you ask? Let's just look at the previous TMNT films.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)- My Score: 7.0/10 I'll give a + for good, and a - for bad.

+ I love the ninja theme in the first 30 mins or so.
+ The store fight is exciting and fun to watch.
+ The turtles act like teenagers.
+ The Foot Clan. I like the idea of them being outcasted teenagers, recruited by Shredder and living in that hideout and becoming ninja's to do crime and fight the turtles.
+April O Neal was cool to me in this one.
-Casey Jones, he feels flat and 2D to me.
-Leonardo wasn't in it enough. He's the leader, he needs to be in it more and be a more prominent leader.
-Donatello wasn't a nerd in this one. He was just kinda there. This film was my first introduction to the turtles back when I was in 2nd grade. I instantly figured out who Mikey and Raph were. Leo and Donnie, not so much.
-The cheesy ending.
-The music when they are fighting in the sewers ruins it, really stupid and cheesy.
- The stuff on the farm. I honestly didn't like any of this. It's boring to me, and the movie was on a roll of excitement, and this just brings it to a complete halt.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze- 7.5/10
+Really fun and entertaining to watch
+ The turtles personalities are finally portrayed well enough for an 88 minute movie. You can tell Leo is the leader, even if he still needed to be have that shown more, Donatello is finally shown as the brains, Mikey is still the jokester, and Raph is still the defiant one.
+ GO NINJA GO NINJA GO!
+ A fun exciting fight at the end.
+ The stakes are higher. The two big bad guys, I forget their names, could destroy all of New York. And at the end, the turtles are walking into a trap and they know it.
- Too short.
- Can get a little too cheesy.
- The donuts thing at the end is kinda cringe-worthy.
- I honestly didn't like that kid. He had his moments, but I would've liked it more if it was just the turtles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III- 4.0/10
+ The Japanese setting is cool.
+ Has some good character development for the turtles.
- Everything else.

TMNT (2007)- 7.0/10
+Great animation.
+ The tension between Raphael and Leonardo.
+ Probably my favorite incarnation of Raphael ever. You really root for him in this movie, at least I do.
+ Leo vs Raph rooftop fight scene.
+The turtles teaming up with Karai and the foot clan was cool to see.
- WAY too short.
- Mikey and Donnie have hardly any screentime.
- April O Neal isn't it enough.
- Even though warrior April was kinda cool, she should just stick to the reporter friend to the turtles role.
- I hope this doesn't sound racist, but Karai's accent got on my nerves.
- Weak villains.

I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) looks to be the BEST turtle movie yet, and here are my top 10 reasons why.

10. They are changing the story up, and not recycling the old movie, which I hate that so many people want them to do.
9. The turtles voices. In the original movie, their voices were all a little annoying, they seem fine now.
8. Even though I am not a fan of the Foot Clan being like a military, I like the idea of them being a total criminal empire that controls the city and has installed fear in the city.
7. The CGI looks amazing.
6. William Fitchner.
5. Will Arnett. This guy is awesome and seeing him in anything is great, let alone a TMNT movie.
4. The visual style. Great cinematography.
3. It looks like all the turtles are gonna have moments to shine, it looks like no one will be left in the dust like TMNT 2007 and the 1990 movie.
2. The turtles personalities look to be portrayed perfectly.
1. Looks really fun and entertaining. A good summer popcorn flick.

I think this movie will without a doubt be the best TMNT movie. They seem to be doing everything right except for The Foot Clan, I miss them being ninja's. While some people have given good reasons to dislike the movie. Others are hating the whole movie just because the way the turtles look, and others are stuck in the past. A message to those people:

I agree. This movie definitely looks like it was "scripted" by cribbing Wikipedia, focusing mostly on the stuff they remembered vaguely from their childhood. The way they go out of their way to hype the importance of pizza and "cowabunga" and all that... it's like nothing in the franchise ever evolved past 1988.

They almost lost me entirely with "Heroes in a Half-Shell". :P I don't care that's the song lyric... that never even made the slightest bit of sense even back then! It's telling that the stuff I see as most annoying/least important to the TMNT - pizza, "Cowabunga", etc. - is being sold as "integral" to it. "Don't worry, there's pizza!" Um... yay?

EDIT: Point that meme at yourself, guy. Nobody's immature if they think those awful designs are awful. It's an opinion. No "growing up" necesary, Snarky McSnarkPants. I agree with a lot of the rest of that post, as far as what worked and didn't in the movies in general, but you lost me with the childish meme.

Gonna have to one up you on that though. They're still telling a story from scratch. Personally I'd have rather they kept "teenage" off the title, said "they're adults now, deal with it," and told a new story all of their own.

Not feeling it necessary for them to try to one up a franchise that's been about continuation, not 'one-upmanship,' is no cause to need to "grow up..." And until the 8th any statements of how the new movie goes is purely speculation no matter who's saying it, not even the filmmakers.

This is an interesting thing to deal with in regards to the movie. While I don't want to agree with you, it's obvious to me that that is the case. After seeing all these previews and the special, I am now anticipating something similar to a live action version of the original toon. However, I'm okay with that! While its not what I was expecting, it's what we got, and I think it's a pleasant surprise

But it is plainly obvious that all that the people working on this movie saw of the turtles is the OT, possibly just the first season.

Its not necessarily a bad thing, i am not saying they aren't "fans" or never watched it, but they clearly don't know anything past a certain area, and that is ok alot of people don't..hell i still get friends who try to surprise me with the "did you know all 4 turtles originally wore red" i had to explain who the shredder was to a friend who has a kid cause she didnt know...and some people have no idea power rangers kept going past 1993

for me the problem comes from when they try to claim they "followed the source" and "stuck true to the source"

sure they may have but with a franchise like TMNT you have to really specify what source...like i said the say "fan favorite vern" yet vernon was only on one series/adaptation (2 now)

last time Michelangelo was a surfer was in the Out of their Shells tour, even by Next Mutation The Surfer motif was dropped in favor of the goofy Mikey

this is why i keep saying anything that is IDW "related" just turned out to be "Happy Accidents". someone said it in another thread i cant remember who but the whole militarized weapon origin is the hot thing right now, its the radioactive accident of today

but it is very clear based on the information we know where this movie took most of its ideas and references from

There's a few visual things borrowed from 2K3 also, but they're probably just "happy accidents" also.

Like when they were making "Superman Returns", at one point they talked about how they were using "the source material" for inspiration. They quickly amended that to say, as far as Singer was concerned, the movies were "the source material" and not the comics, because most people only know Superman from the first film, and that the film was the main reference. When people got annoyed about that, they backtracked a bit and mentioned they in fact were using the comics as well for inspiration, but much later admitted that Singer himself never read any Superman comics and the farthest they got as far as using them for inspiration was using art from the covers and that's all.

I'd imagine that's as far as the studio has gone as far as using 2K3 and most anything else but the OT as inspiration, as well. "That Foot Clan logo from 2K3 looks cooler than the one from the 80s show, let's use that." "Shredder's armor in 2K3 is bigger and menacing, more mech-like. Let's use that." I'd be surprised if any of them ever actually watched any of it.

Well, I mean, knowing what I do of how they decide the "look" of a movie, they definitely all sat in a room and looked over every visual representation the TMNT have ever had. That's what the studio behind every franchise film does. They definitely looked at least a little bit at everything, so they could cherry-pick. How deeply they looked at anything BUT the OT, though... that's questionable.

I think this movie will without a doubt be the best TMNT movie. They seem to be doing everything right except for The Foot Clan, I miss them being ninja's. While some people have given good reasons to dislike the movie. Others are hating the whole movie just because the way the turtles look

I've given my reasons why I dislike upcoming movie isn't the way the titular characters look a valid one.

It's not just about the fact they look so drastically different although that's as good a reason as any but we're expected to watch these things for under 100 minutes I think it matters if they are aesthetically pleasing or not.

sure they may have but with a franchise like TMNT you have to really specify what source...like i said the say "fan favorite vern" yet vernon was only on one series/adaptation (2 now)

I'd also say it'd be stretching it a lot to say he was a fan favorite character even in the 87 show. Even the biggest Fred Wolf fan (and I love that show) would probably have him far down on the list of characters unique to that show they'd want to see in a movie.

Then again it wouldn't surprise me if Arnett actually does think that Vernon is a fan fave. He seems to be the under the impression that he's from original comics and being the cousin of Casey Jones is the norm for the character and not something cooked up by this movie so I'm guessing that's what he's been told.

Leo656
07-18-2014, 06:56 PM
I'd wager big-time they just figured Verne was a "favorite" simply because of the number of episodes he was in. "Hey, wikipedia says this Verne guy was in 754 episodes of the cartoon, but that Casey Jones guy from the old movie was only in two or three. Those guys must have screwed it up; Verne's gotta be more important than Casey, let's fix it."

Almost positive that some variation of that conversation took place at one point. Pretty much nobody ever liked Verne or wanted to see him in a TMNT movie, definitely not at the expense of... well... any other character, really.

The very first couple issue of the Archie comics were all straight adaptations of the first few cartoon episodes. After that, Vernon, Burne, Irma, Baxter etc. never appeared or were mentioned in Archie again. Whenever they showed April's boss or co-workers from then on, they were completely different characters.

I forget when the ongoing series ditched the cartoon universe and went its own way, but I think it was around issue 3 or 4 at the absolute latest. All my books have been in storage for a while, or I'd pull 'em and check.

Well, in my case, the look is part of the reason, but the film as a whole just doesn't catch my interest. I don't hate this film...how can I if I've never seen it? I don't like the idea of Martial Artists with guns, for one, unless that wasn't the Foot, and I'm just mistaken. My impression of it from the trailers just feels like it'll be as generic as other recent action films, like Transformers for example. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

That aside, how can they do anything ninja like if they're the size of monster trucks?

I hate it when movies are promoted in that "you have to see this in 3D or IMAX to get the full effect". More than half the time, I just find it a waste of money.

this is half the reason i avoid 3D and imax..because aside from a few scenes it really makes no difference

its why i refused to see Avatar in theaters and still havent

Yeah, I saw Godzilla in 3D Imax, I think that was the first Imax movie I've seen, and I wasn't even going to until the guy was like "It's only 2 dollars more than the regular 3D, might as well," or whatever it was, and I'm like "Fine", I'm already 50 bucks in the hole.

It was swell but it didn't seem to make a huge difference. I don't really give a sh*t about Imax. It's like blu-ray being so much better than DVD, if they're both the same price, fine, but I seriously can't tell the difference either way, so I'm not going out of my way to spend more money if I don't have to.

Avatar's alright but I swear that movie was only made to show off the technology in theaters, because seeing it for the first time just last year, on blu-Ray, I can see why it was hot for five minutes a few years ago but it already looks fake as hell. It's not a bad movie, and I can see how it would've been "WOW!" seeing it in 3D in theaters, but I can't recall the last time a movie with so much hype left me feeling so, "Eh." Actually, yeah, "Titanic". I guess I only like Cameron movies with robots in 'em.

What kinda tv do you have Leo?

Cus I can definently tell the difference between a DVD and Blu-ray.

Wow, this is way off topic.

A pretty good one. Sony somethin'-or-other, 30-whatever inches. I have the "Man of Steel" set that has both versions, and while I can see a little bit more crispness it's fairly minor.

I have hundreds of DVDs already and I like shelf uniformity, so I generally buy DVDs instead unless the blu-ray is all that's readily available, or cheaper. It's not like the quality difference is as vast as the one between DVDs and grainy VHS tapes. The shininess of something really doesn't sway me one way or the other.

Bahstin: Good. Any girl that tries to suggest watching Titanic isn't someone you need to mess with anyway. It ain't really very good. I mean, it's pretty, and it's not "Bad", it's just... unless you're a huge fan of DiCaprio there really isn't a great reason for watching it. It's not even historically accurate, one of the real-life character's families sued the studio for slander or something over how the guy was portrayed. Kate Winslet's got some awesome jugs, though. But you can probably find the stills with a quick Google search. I'unno, it's just a regular chick flick with a ton of hype and Oscars.
