View Full Version : "Fans unhappy with changes" in the new movie

In an interview (http://uk.ign.com/videos/2014/08/07/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-megan-fox-interview?utm_campaign=fbposts&utm_source=facebook) with Megan Fox she talked about fans being "unhappy with changes" made the mythology.

I have a question regarding this:

Changes to the mythology have been made to every iteration of TMNT ever since the original comics. So what exactly were fans expecting from this? A 100% remake of the comics or 80s cartoon? Don't be absurd.

fans upset with changes sound like the nostalgic 80's cartoon and 90's movie turtle lovers who are stuck in a time warp. Just my Opinion

Well, I'd rather have Raphael be a bad-ass martial artist (ala Jason Statham or such) instead of an 'Incredible Hulk' guy who only does that...Super Turtle/Hulk stuff...and instead perhaps use his Martial arts (which he's done in Every Single Aspect in the past) and apparently was trained for over a decade in but doesn't really use (at least according to some folks who saw the film already and told me about it, and I trust their opinion, and others confirmed that).

So that's one change I wouldn't be happy with...Mikey being turned into 'he farts and that's funny' guy or 'getting his shell tightened' by seeing Megan Fox' would be another change I'd be unhappy with as well...

Plus, how many times do people have to say the same song & dance...some folks simply aren't fans of the new designs and they don't care about the 'it's more realistic' argument'. Their Opinions are not always going to be the same as your opinions.

If you, Megan Fox, and others like it? Cool. But if she (or anyone) thinks that every single person would be fine and dandy with it, then they are only fooling themselves.

I don't mind changes and I don't think "those fans" dislike change either. They dislike the show because instead of improving the story line by filling plot holes and adding more complex characterization they choose to change the plot just for the sake of change. Changes should only be done if it fixes the plot hole or improves the character. Change should never corrupt the original experience.

Or people who are sick of douchebags ******** all over characters they love because the property isn't good enough for them in the first place.

The douchebags I'm talking about are Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to the library to rent a book about martial arts to become a ninja master.

Or maybe fans don't like the TYPE of changes made to the mythology?

A lot of people don't like the "every character is intertwined and their pasts are all connected" alterations. That's been a big gripe with the Spider-Man origin changes. Instead of random circumstances and an accident, there's an almost destiny aspect to it and a lot of people don't like that.

Even the IDW storyline keeps the completely accidental aspect, but from what I've glimpsed, the movie REALLY makes everything tightly connected between April, the turtles, Splinter, and how she relates to their past and origins.

I've even read some comments that seem to suggest there's no real indication of Hamato Yoshi/Oroku Saki history explored in the film. Dunno if that's true. I'll find out in 30 minutes. Well, starting in 30 minutes. :P

Wouldn't that suggest nobody has the right to have an opinion on Coming Out of Their Shells, TMNT 3, or The Next Mutation as well? ;)

Of course people are gonna upset by the changes. They turned the Foot, a ninja clan, into a paramilitary, Shredder into basically a robo-ninja, just like what happen to Silver Samurai in The Wolverine, and for some reason decided to go ahead and radically redesign the Turtles and put all this unnecessary junk on them when the could have just simply retain the classic elements of their designs. Personally, the Turtles in the OOTS video game would be my ideal design for a live action ninja turtles movies.

And the alien/Shredder in the 2003 Cartoon.

It's not just 'it's different, and that's it'.

The Context of it, personal tastes, types of changes, and many more are part of the equation as well...

Spoilers for anybody who cares:

Apparently the Splinter in this new movie learned martial arts from a book. Not Hamato yoshi. What you just said would make sense if I was railing against Splinter learning his skills from Hamato Yoshi and not some f*cking book he found. As it is now you're just rambling incoherently.

Do you like not read or watch any science article at all? I am guessing no because the thought of imitating is absurd. Well guess what. Everything that exists today is absurd! Experts said radios would never exist. Experts said the atomic bomb would never go off. Experts said the internet would never exist.

Now todays experts are wise enough to not be so pessimistic because now they understand the three laws!

1 When a distinguished but elderly scientist states something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2 The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible
3 Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Perhaps the lore of the turtle bros doesn't need a pessimistic mindset. Instead the lore requires a curious mind who is willing to make sense of the absurd.

Edit: Also do you not understand I am not being serious. I do not treat TMNT like politics, that is just silly.

Ive been reading a lot on these boards that fans are upset by the fact that Raph isnt what they'd hope...

with all due respect, I gotta ask:

1) If the Shredder handed Splinter his a**, and has been seen manhandling all 4 Turtles simultaneously, why expect Raph to be able to handle him on his own?
2) Raph obviously has size going for him - fighters know, you use what you have to your advantage, and if Raph has size, what is wrong with him exploiting that in a fight? Even in Out of the Shadows, his attack patterns consisted mainly of BIG elbow, and BIG knee shots, nothing fancy, just heavy hits for maximum damage, not unlike a trained boxer/muay thai artist who is bigger in stature.

Actually, I didn't see the film and am only commenting since some folks, after they saw it (who i trust their opinion very much) told me things that just aggravated me...and I believe mods have told people like us countless times to ease up on that kind of talk...

So, listening to the mods & easing up on that is the same as 'backpedaling'?

What's the point of being a NINJA turtle, and training at least over a decade in the Art of Ninjutsu, if you are just going to Punch or act like The Hulk instead of doing some badass Martial Arts (especially when Raph used Martial Arts in every single thing in the past, even cheap live action TV shows)...especially with all of that The Raid/Fist of Legend talk again & again...

Here's the thing though: Raph in OOTS wasn't as big or tall as he is in this movie. Compared to Shredder in the game, he was short, but not to much.

This thread is idiotic.

Obviously fans accept changes. Look at what 4kids, IDW and Nick did with the mythos, most of it was well-received and some concepts there are very different than the past.

When changes are bad, like the Next Mutation, people will complain. Same for this movie.

*sigh I'm tired of having to explain why I don't like the changes made to the mythology in this movie as opposed to those made in other versions after the comics.

I will however say two things; firstly that I tend to think people overstate how different each version is and secondly that there's a realm of good taste when changing something that is not hard to be aware of and this movie is way out.

One or two changes is fine but when you have so many ranging from the origin, to their motivation, to their primary villain, to the tone to overall look and style it's going to rub fans the wrong way.

That doesn't change stuff to cash in on Bayformers formula, doesn't dumb down characters and doesn't have excuse plot filled with holes? I dunno...All this sounds like a reasonable expectations to me. For a good movie, not only about bipedal talking Turtles, but for any movie.

im glad you responded bro, because I really wanted to hear your opinion:

- you and I both wanted RAID like fights...no secret there. but funny thing is, I watched the RAID just the other day, and one of the main cops was taller, and bigger than the main character, and his fights were just as brutal (and no less cool, just less flashy), but he used his size to his advantage.
- Ninjitsu is more than just a fighting style; and while Raph may use his size, he is still Ninja.

but at this point, its safe to say we all expected something different out of this film, I know that I wanted:

Hamato Yoshi

A rat learning ninjutsu from its master IS an absurd idea.

But it's the one that came first and the one they should have used. Absolutely no reason at all to change it other than because they didn't think it was good enough for them.

And to apparently tie every single thing to Megan O'Fox.

What about Raph makes him a Ninja in this? Just because of the name of the movie, and he has sais...that's it. Every Single Thing I've heard is 'He punches, and does Hulk stuff, that's it'

If that's the case, then you'd have to start calling The Incredible Hulk a Ninja.

Ninjas are Martial Artists (which, from what people close to me told me and I trust their opinion, Raph doesn't do, thus not a Ninja). Sorry if I wanted my favorite character to be a Bad Ass.

And you said Brutal...this movie would never be brutal. You can't have 'brutal' with a PG-13. No, not even any of the Dark Knight flicks were 'brutal'. No sequels to this flick (and no Ninja Turtle films) will ever be brutal, in any way.

And this film was never going to have 'Raid-like fights'. Not here, in a sequel, or anytime...it was just Kevin Eastman and others saying that to get fans 'hyped' to pay their ticket to see it, and that's it...

All they did was see the success of The Avengers, and go 'remember when Tony Stark said "We have a Hulk!", you remember that, right?'

Well, Raph can be 'Our Hulk'. So turn him into that since The Avengers was a Gigantic Hit. That's pretty much it.

Heck if they'd actually found an origin that is even semi-plausible I'd have time for it but at best Splinter learning martial arts from a book is just as absurd as watching Yoshi and at worst way, way more.

And to apparently tie every single thing to Megan O'Fox.

Indeed. It's particularly bothersome to me that everything in this movie is connected in some way except the one thing that should be connected like Splinter and Shredder.

If there is a sequel, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to work him into the film in some bizarre way. They seem to listen to the fan's backlash quite a bit. Now only if they could replace the writers and the directors with someone who's has actual experience of writing and directing a good movie.

Sure, things have been altered now and then. At the same time though it doesn't mean she/they are in the right either just for taking an attitude and calling people out for not liking it. If they were to attempt absurd changes then what would they expect of fans.

I mean, I hate to say it, but if they went ahead with the aliens bit, obliterating an important part of the relateability with the characters and most people were unhappy with that... she/they would very likely probably still be defending their choice and talking down to fans for not liking it.

They only have the characters in their hands temporarily, I don't really have much mind to care to defend them or buddy up with them anytime they lash out at fans like my view, were it the same, was validated or something.

Totally agree with this. And for those that saw the film know that they are ninjas.
And the martial arts is far superior to anything that came before it imo. Esp. the fights with the Shredder. There are plenty of times when the turtles get their asses handed to them. But it was ultimately team work at the end. It's hard to go into it any further without spoiling it but. They are definitely ninja's/martial artist. The scenes with them as kids was amazing. The way the spar/ practice their moves was really impressive and fun to watch bc they were so small and quick. And I definitely think that they will go more in depth in a sequel judging by how open ended they left a few things. They did mention about the ooze " being from an alien planet" in a home video. I cant wait for the sequel now.

It looks like a great funny action movie I don't know what else people want.

You don't have to like it just because but those people that act like it makes them physically ill and think it's something bad for the franchise to make money and flourish are just ridiculous.

It's like they want the brand to stagnate and die just as long as they don't change one little bit of the stories.

It's a story about rat and turtle men I grew up on it and I love it but it's not crucial to my life that they don't do it exactly as I want or it's dead to me, I remember when the Transformers people were like that's I for me I'm out of Transformers all together.

I am at the point I will care to defend these Turtles themselves since their personalities at least have helped make it feel like it's them and they have no say in what people decide to do with them or the choices made.

The film makers however, they're on their own. They're big boys and girls, and in the film industry no less, they should be able to withstand criticism.

I am only suggesting we make sense of the absurd. Not they should have used this absurd idea. I know the movie origin is silly. I am just used to silly cause ya know I am a TMNT fan. I enjoy trying to make sense of the impossible instead of only believing what is practical.

So we should just be sheep and like it because it has the name TMNT on it?

But when the people who supports this movie actually say something bad about the other TMNT incarnations, expect a sarcastic response from the more "mature" folks here that say "this is the best TMNT and everything else before it is terrible".

Is it really hard to accept that maybe some people were not really bothered by all those changes? Most of the members here that actually saw the movie were satisfied on what they saw. But of course their opinion are not relevant for some reason.

Yeah, After the mutation, Splinter gains intelligence and was able to read books. That makes way more sense then a normal rat in a cage doing martial arts moves like his master.

You know what doesn't make sense?

Ooze mutating turtles so that they eat pizza, talk and practice ninjutsu.

They probably should have changed that too. Since, you know, it doesn't make sense.

Breaking news huh, I think the Turtle people seem worse off than the Transformers people ever did.

Nicely put mang. I agree with this 100%. I can understand people not being happy with this movie.. you can never make everyone happy. And it isn't the perfect film by far. But really. I have never seen so many grown adults say that this movie has ruined their childhood in my life. Before even seeing it. I think that is taking it a little to far and quite frankly embarrassing. For me.. it's more about the franchise staying relevant and strong for future generations. Ensuring that we get more TMNT in the long run and NOT having stagnation. There is always going to be an iteration that disappoints imo. But as long as it's positive for the franchise I'm not going to let it ruin my life lol. If I were unhappy with this film that's on me.. I don't need to be selfish about it. It was almost more enjoyable to see my little nephew laughing and having the time of his life along with all of the other kids sitting in the front. Just bc it's not the film you want.. doesn't mean anyone owes you an apology.

Not at all. If people like what they've seen of the new movie then great for them. I wish I did since it's the first live action adaptation in 20 years. Oh well. Hopefully Episode VII doesn't let me down too.

I don't agree with the comment that you should blindly be on board with anything they do because it has the name TMNT. Things don't work that way.

I really enjoyed the origin in this movie. I agree dude. I also love how they made sense of them loving pizza.

I loved how they had scenes with young April feeding them pizza before they were mutated. I loved how they were let go and how the movie went into them training as youngsters. Those scenes were some of the coolest material I have ever seen for TMNT.

Or maybe those people don't want franchise to become mediocre parody of itself, you know?

Changes necessary for the survival of the franchise, but it should be GOOD changes, that help make franchise better. More modern and interesting.
If you strip some stuff form the story and add some **** just because you feel like it...it ain't right way to do it. It is a sure way to make franchise diluted mediocrity, that will be forgotten in few years, because there would be nothing good or unique. Nothing to differentiate it from hundreds of other franchises both in presentation and quality.

The way TMNT'14 remade Turtles, is just another way to destroy franchise. Way more bright, than stagnation, but with the same sad final.

Just bc it's not the film you want.. doesn't mean anyone owes you an apology.
Also, it doesn't mean that people who dislike it should apologize for their opinion.

Breaking news huh, I think the Turtle people seem worse off than the Transformers people ever did.
Yeah, because they DARE to complain about mediocre movie. What an absurd impudence!!

This idea is seemingly last resort of "defenders" of this movie. They can't prove that its good, so they use joker: "you're bad fan of Ninja Turtles if you dislike something that have its mark on it". It's basically primitive trolling tactic. Harmless, stupid and tad bit aggravating.

chrisdude

I think the important thing is that if they replaced something ridiculous with something just as ridiculous, it isn't because they were afraid of being ridiculous. It's not part of some initiative to make TMNT realistic.

Because of the origin story in the first film, Splinter learning ninjitsu from a picture book doesn't affect me that much. I don't really like it, but I'm not mad. What I want to know is though, where the hell did they get their weapons?! The chucks and bo staff are obviously made, but the sais and a freaking katana?

On that same Megan Fox Interview, She mentions what she do with every Turtle.

and have a One Night Stand with Raph. hahah

I think it depends on the type of change and how drastic.

If the change is done right and to a point, then it can work. But, sometimes even if the change is done right, it's not necessary to fix what isn't broken. (Like if they made Donnie the leader and executed it well and fit it well in the story, it's not something that needs to be dabbled in)

I think fans aren't upset about the changes so much as HOW they are executed or why.

I'm pretty open to changes, I mean, I was probably the only person I knew who was alright with Eric being Shredder. But, some of the changes don't set with me because they are poorly done.

I think that would be a nice to develop the characters and their through the course of a film by having the roles changed. I don't think the creative team behind it could ever pull it off when it sounds like they stuck to the bare minimum archetypes of the characters in this one.

When I learned Fichner was meant to play Shredder I wasn't sure how to feel - he may pull it off well and the story will be different but good. However, I was getting those horrible Dragonball Evolution vibes about it. Now that I've learned that multiple changes were made to quell the backlash, the original story may actually have been a lot better. They were damned if they did, and damned if they didn't.

At least there's still the DVD, which will probably be packed with deleted scenes and explanations.

I wasn't sure either, but if it was done RIGHT it could have worked, even as a villain to lead up to 'the true Shredder'.
Maybe he got inspired and tried to recreate his own Shredder armor because Saki inspired him. Maybe Saki was thought to be a legend but wasn't dead and shows up at the end...that would be cool.

You can feel like Shredder is slapped on in this movie. The main villain was suppose to be Sacks, even the plan sounds like Sacks.

I guess some good came from the uproar and some bad came from the uproar.

I think that kind of development would be better in a series, only because it would take a lot of time. I think that could be a good idea, a different development approach.

They did seem to stick to the bare minimum, I think due to time, budget and re-writes tho.

I wouldn't done it in the first film, but throwing obstacles like that in the characters way in a sequel would work. I nust don't think this creative team could pull it off when they couldn't be bothered with character arcs in the first film. There's no excuse for them to have been as bare bones as it sou ds like they were. That's the problem with making a film designed to get from one action set piece to another.

Sigh.

Not to mention, someone sitting next to me noticed this, and he pretty much said, shaking his head, that all the minorities in this movie, were villains. The Hamato Yoshi was integral to keeping that balance, but poof, all gone. And, it's just amazing that such an important character was altogether cut from the movie. It would be like making an X-Men movie with Xavier not existing.

Exactly. I have a friend who didn't want to watch the 2003 cartoon because it wasn't the original voices from the 80's. WTF?

Some people just don't like change and that's okay, some people warm up to change....and that's even better....but when you have a movie like this one where changes seem forced and the movie is so weak, it's just an awful, awful mix.

I doubt 90's April was in it less, and if anything, if she was in the scene, most of the time the Turtles were in the scene with her, and were the focal point of the scene, not the other way around. And I said fight scenes, none of them were memorable, mainly because they were super duper rushed, and the f***king shaky cam blurred everything up.

I thought that too. I saw a special screening on Wednesday and it was in 3D and the movie was making me sick at the beginning with it's chaotic shaky cam.

I saw it last night again with some friends, to see if I still felt so negative and to get their opinions, in a regular screening and it was nowhere near as blurry.
