Dreamwave's TMNT #3 Discussion( SPOILERS)

So? how was it?

i particularly enjoyed Peter David's spin on Baxter, and approach
to the alternate view on his perspective on the turtles and April O'Neil.

I just got home with my copy! :D

I really love the history Peter David is giving the human characters, April in the last issue, and Baxter in this. Character developement makes stories, no matter what the format, so much richer. I can't wait to see what will be done with Hun and Oroku Saki. Just as I now have some sympathy for Baxter, and understanding of his motivations, I hope to have the same for other "evil" characters in this series. Saki's sighing comment "There's always a woman..." gives him a feeling of humanity, if just a little.

Other thoughts...

I like April's sweetly innocent appearance during her interview with Baxter.

Splinter covered in ooze is my favorite single image from this issue.

I LOVE seeing the Turtles out of their gear!!! No one wears their uniform full time, no matter what the profession. (Though I suppose one could argue that strippers are always naked under their clothing.)

I loved it! Great idea starting a letters page too, and addressing the "is this a mini series comic?" thing.

The art, as always, was top notch. I was kinda supprised to see the turtles with out the bandanas on. Keep up the good work :D

The facial expressions sans bandanas are really interesting. Don's "Ah, cut it out." face is cute! Perhaps LeSean might let us know whether or not he finds it more difficult to draw them bandana-less? I'm not much of a two-dimensional artist personally, but I would think it might be a bit more of a challenge to draw them without their standard facial covering. The bandana's help define the shape of thier faces.

Every issue just gets more and more amazing than the last. As you can see, I'm a Raphael mark, so I'm DEFINITELY anticipating issue 4. Peter David's writing style is incredible. I definitely sympathize with Baxter now, well, atleast I sympathize with this version, and I love the back stories these characters have been given thus far. And as always, LeSean's pencils are incredible. One of these days, I WILL posess that talent!!

I loved it. However I have to b honest and say that i didn't really care to for the part where the turtles aren't wearing their bandanas. I won't bother to bring up why unless anyone asks me, but it did not detract from the whole, which I enjoyed a lot.

LeSean, you'll be at Canadian National Comic Book/Sci fi/Anime Expo, right? If so, I'd very much like to have a chat with you there, and perhaps show you some of my own artwork.

Oh, and one more thing: You draw April really cute. And I'm sure I'm not the only dude around here that thinks so. :D

Me too man! I can't wait till Issue 4! As for Issue 3 - It was just really good artwork and I liked the turtles without masks I guess it gave us something and the whole Baxter story and him being in high school was really cool and I like Peter David's approach.

Yeah, that's my only gripe as well. I would've liked it if they had pupils. Aren't their eyes only supposed to be bleach white when they have their bandanas on?

I like it. I don't get what people are complaining about. If anything, this actually "feels" more like TMNT than the Mirage book to me, if that makes any sense to anyone. Sure it "retells" the stories from the episodes, but from a different perspective and giving new depth to the stories themselves. Besides, it's only gonna be going on for a couple more issues anyway, then it's all original stories. I think some people are just giving up on this book too quickly. It's got one of the best comic writers ever in Peter David, and LeSean's art is infinitely better than Jim Lawson's (and in color, to boot)... what's not to like?

PAD sure shows off his skills in making Baxter almost sympathetic. He really seems good at that. I mean, he even kinda made Buzz likeable in "Supergirl" at one point... the guy's simply very good at what he does.

LeSean's art grows on me more every issue, and I'm not just saying that because I share half a name with him. :P His females are quite well-done, and his turtles are really good too. My only gripe (and I mentioned it in another thread): The eyes. Blank white eyes with masks on, I can buy. I don't "get" it, but I can buy it. But without their masks on it makes NO sense for them to not have pupils... it just bugs me. I know it's just a nitpick though. Ah well.

Thumbs up on this one.

Remember when Raph had his mask off in the cartoon episode that mirrored the Donatello Special? They didn't do a close-up of him, but it looked as if he had no pupils. I hope that's not what they're gonna be doing.

I liked this issue. I liked how they... "humanize" everyone, even the bad guys in the stories. Like Baxter. Even the 'bad guys' have a somewhat normal past, like his troubles in high school. I liked how there was the whole "April" thing, with the girl from Baxter's past and how he made the connection.

And the TMNT, well, everything with them is always great.


So, I guess it's safe to say that I just plain love the issue. (Like I couldn't have just said that in the first place, right?)

Karpo, my comic guy says he's hoping by next week.

I liked the issue as a whole. It's neat the way they are fleshing out the characters a bit. Lesean's art was great as usual. Also the coloring is and has been just fantastic. It makes Lesean's work look that much better. I'm really waiting for the new stories to start in #5 though. I want to see where this series is heading.

i like the stories a whole lot.

here's my opnion on the art - his style comes off as kind of 'chunky' at times to me, which i totally dig. i only have 3 nit-picks: i didnt like the lines on the bottom side of the mouth, i dont like the way april's (and others) eyes seem to be pushed back in their head (they have big bulges around them or something), and i had the way the shell joins the back shell when you see them from the "ass view", but thats the way the new cartoon does it too (which bugs me there to hehe)

overall, i really like the comic =). i think lawson's art is still better tho, just not his humans. i love his turtles. but im a more old school b&w with duo-shading type of guy than this snazzy new computer coloring! why back in my day we had to walk 10 miles in 5ft deep snow just to.....*rambles along..*

Get's the job done? I don't want him to get the job done, I want him to get it done RIGHT. Or atleast WELL. Everytime I look at Return to New York it just makes me madder and madder, thinking about how awesome the new book would be if Lawson would only come to his senses.

I can understand that, and I wondered why his style has changed untill his response in last issue. If he wants to draw in that style, and Laird is ok with it then it isn't going to change. The Turtles still look good, but compared to what he used to do, the over all art does not.

I finally picked up my copy last night, and I agree.. I do like where the series is going. Personally, I don't mind that they are not focusing 100% on the turtles. I'm at the point now I can probally tell which Turtle it is just by looking at his toe! But if you asked me what April's favorite color is, or when is her birthday... I'd have to think long and hard. So it's a good thing to know more about these other human characters than makes the Turtles lives as they are.

The BG story on Baxter was neat, as was the action sequences at the end bewteen him and the TMNT. Also thought it was fun to see the TMNT without masks. Of course, it is odd to see then still without pupils, but I guess that's something we have to live with. The have also been gifted with mutant ninja optics! But... heh, the thing that bugged me, is that while they didn't have their masks on, they still wore their weapons, belts and pads. Seems like they would at least take the weapons off with the masks, and then make us fans really sweat by trying to guess who was who. :P

Great issue! Looking forward to more, of course. 8)

It wasn't the lack of pupils that bothered me about the maskless scene. It was just the fact that there wasn't really much reason for them not to be wearing their masks. It made things hard for me to see which turtle was actually speaking. Plus, that was a scene straight out of the animation, dialogue and all, and in the animation they were wearing masks. I found that change to be jarring, and it took me out of the moment. Instead of going with the flow of the story, I could only think "Why are they not wearing their masks here?"

I also found the origin sequence to be a bit tacked on. I suppose it was felt like it had to be put somewhere in the issue, and that was the best place for it. It just didn't seem natural in the flow of story telling for it to be there. It was awkward.

But these are minor points. I don't consider myself picky, I just see something good and I want to make it better.

I'm really diggin' the backstory we're getting treated to of supporting characters. It's a really nice touch. Artwork was top notch all the way, and I kinda like the no pupils thing. It makes sense when they don't have pupils with the masks on, why would they have it with them off?

I've gotta say... I absolutely love what Peter David and LeSean are doing with the TMNT!! David's giving minor and supporting characters incredible background stories. His style of story-telling leaves me in awe, and he's got a great sense of humor. And I thought Mikey's reference to the Bond movies was pretty funny. :D LeSean's art is awesome, just plain awesome. Love the raw energy that flows in the action scenes, and I like the way he makes facial expressions. The two are doing an awesome job. Keep up the good work!!

I figure I'm not going to be too excited for this book until issue 5... isn't that when the standalone stories start? Hopefully it'll actually star the turtles. Don't get me wrong the art is great... it's just that I don't really like the format. It gets a little too hectic at times.

this was a very good issue....I love how part of the comics show a specific character's past. it shows lots of character development.
