View Full Version : TMNT 2014 - Thoughts from UK viewers - SPOILERS

Before I get shot down in flames – I’m setting up this thread for UK peeps to discuss their thoughts on the film as it has only just been released over here. Therefore this thread is bound to cover many comments and discussions already posted. However those threads are now 10’sof pages long so it’s very difficult to find any relevant comments for someone who has only just seen the film.
So…if you aren’t UK based and don’t want to be bored / irritated by members covering old ground, don’t read any further! :)
Also this thread WILL contain spoilers.
My initial thoughts and comments on seeing it for the first time.
Good points.
> Amazing effects.
> Personally I like the new Turtle designs. Splinter’s not so hot, Shredder is pretty badass.
> Cool that Karai is in it, and given plenty of screen time.
> I enjoyed the Turtles characters.
> Will Arnett as Vern was a plus point.
> Megan Fox wasn’t actually THAT bad!
> Very entertaining. Snow chase was much better than I thought it was gonna be!
> Fights scenes were pretty slick to be fair.
Bad points.
> I hated…HATED…the fact that Splinter and the Turtles have next to no relationship with Shredder. The only reason Shredder is even interested in the Turtles is because of the mutagen in their blood.
> The fact that Splinter learnt Ninjitsu from a book. Self-taught. That is a terrible decision from the writers, TERRIBLE. (no wonder Shredder kicked all their assess).
> It seemed to me that the only time we ever really saw the Turtles was when there was action. There were never really any scenes of them just chilling. For example in the original movie when Mike and Don are waiting for the pizza to be delivered. Yes there is the 99 Cheese Pizza scene but on the whole, the Turtles are only used for action (budget?).
> Story was ridiculous. In the fact that The Foot (Shredder) apparently already ran the city. And Sacks also apparently had a lot of money (big mansion etc). So why did they even need to bother with trying to release the virus. Didn’t make sense. Would’ve made sense if Sacks was a struggling scientist and The Foot were a criminal organisation on the rise but not at the top. To me it seemed both Sacks and The Foot didn’t have much to gain from their ‘evil plan’.
> In some ways Shredder didn’t even make sense. Why did he need to personally go to the Turtles liar? Why did he need to personally go to the rooftop and release the virus? How did he suddenly know the Turtles names (i.e. when Raph fights Shredder, he immediately knows it is Raphael).
> Again more issues with the plot, what did Shredder even have to do with the mutagen tests that Sacks and April’s father carried out? The only link I can see is that Shredder raised Sacks as his own, but I can’t remember now why they said Shredder took Sacks under his wing?
> Aprils dad burning down the lab. Killing himself. April coming out of nowhere to save the Turtles. What about her dad?! Why did her dad need to basically commit suicide? Couldn’t he have just burned the lab and escaped? Senseless…senseless writing.
So infuriating that writers get paid to do this for a living and can’t even put together a basic plot or reasoning for any actions.
Questions.
> Why were The Foot/Sacks only interested in the Turtles and not Splinter? Did Splinter not also have mutagen running through his veins?
> Was it ever mentioned what Karai’s relationship was with Shredder? I missed that if so…
> One more…maybe I missed something again but…how did they survive the fall at the end? Pure luck?
Despite all the negativity above and massive plot holes…and also complete trampling over the TMNT history and characters…I still actually enjoyed the film (if you just sit back and don’t think), and will probably go see it a second time.

I pretty much agree with all of your bad points :(
It's such a shame that this movie was let down by it's plot/story.
That aside, i still think this was an amazing film and I enjoyed it emmensely. I was on the positive side of the fence from the beginning but it out did all of my expectations! Mikey was hilarious and i loved the close knit family vibe too.
Would love to see this at the cinema again given the chance. In the meantime, does anyone know when this is likely to be released on dvd/bluray?
EDIT: Third time iv'e said this i think lol. But I'm so gutted they cut the elevator scene short. I thought Leo headbanging was hilarious...:(
Maybe we'll get a deleted scene on a dvd/bluray release? Fingers crossed lol

I loved it! No surprises there. Agree with all your plus points, Megan Fox surprised me big time and I actually like her as April.
I think learning ninjitsu from a book is about as believable as a pet rat imitating moves in his cage, but then that's why I've always preferred it when Splinter is Hamato Yoshi. Just makes it easier to believe for me.
During Sach's talk to the turtles in his lab, didn't he say something about wanting even more money and power? I'm thinking world domination, not just NYC. Sachs also revealed to April and Vern that he killed April's father when he discovered the truth.
I think they survived the fall because it was broken by buildings and they were inside that structure that stayed in one piece.
I too would like to see more of a backstory that further links Shredder to Splinter and the Turtles. It's something they could add to in the sequel, so hopefully we'll get that. I definitely want to see more downtime in the lair, or a training session with Splinter. I felt the scene where they were given their weapons and masks was very rushed and would liked to have seen more of that. Definitely happy that Karai was in it quite a bit but would like to see her given more dialogue next time and a bigger role in the story overall.
But as I said, I loved it. The tone of the film was spot on, as were the personalities of the characters and the relationships between them (excluding Shredder). I like the retelling of the origin, reminiscent of IDW but better in the sense that they grew up in the sewers rather than just mutating into teenagers. I would liked it to of been longer, but my 6 year old exclaimed "That was the longest film I've ever seen!" so perhaps they judged that right too when aiming at such a wide audience. Hoping to see it again next weekend :D
I'm pretty sure the DVD is due before Christmas and I'm betting the full elevator scene will be there somewhere in its full glory ;)
Thanks for the thread btw, think we need it!

Ok I am German and didn´t watch the movie so far, BUT I got the movie novalization and it says:
"It was rumored that she has a special connection to Shredder.
Some whispered that she was his daughter, but no one could prove it."
I think they go the 2003 way with Karai as his adopted daughter.
Hope they will make this things clear in the second movie. :ohwell:

That's the way i remember it too. Nothing was mentioned about their relationship what so ever.
I can't imagine that's something that's going to be of much importance in a sequel either, but maybe that's just me :ohwell:

Honestly, they were hardly even real characters in the movie - they were there, and they did things, but backstory and personality (and even a real name for Shredder) weren't established at all. Any motivation or deeper connection between them could only exist in the audiences' heads.

Copy/pasted from the review thread:
Loved it a lot! I knew I was going to like but I didn't expect to love it so much.
I was really impressed with the CGI for the turtles and Splinter, the Shredder was such a badass both outside and inside his armour, Megan Fox was surprisingly okay as April too. :P
Mikey was so darn hilarious :tcool: despite his somewhat creepy crush on April. Is that a thing now? With each new version of TMNT, one of the turtles has to fancy April?
Megan Fox's best line imho was when she screamed Raph's name while he fought the Shredder. She sounded genuinely distressed and was actually a good bit of acting on her part!
Will Arnett and Whoopi Goldberg were okay, didn't really see the need to make Burne a woman though.
Once it got going, the movie itself was very relentless with its set-pieces which I think worked in its favour. The excitement never stopped and I think kids will love that - I did and I'm a fully grown man. Even my girlfriend loved it and she's not a big TMNT fan like I am.
One thing I didn't like - no mention of Hamato Yoshi. That entire backstory was completely replaced with the whole "Project Renaissance" thing, with April knowing the turtles since she was a child. I found it extremely desperate and contrived that she would know them before their mutation and know who they are as teenagers.
The best parts of the movie were, obviously, the scenes with the turtles. They're bloody awesome from both an entertaining standpoint and a technical standpoint. They look amazing, especially in 3D.
I don't understand the praise for April's roommate. She was barely in it and wasn't funny at all.
It also would have been nice for Karai to have had some actual character development. Other than her name and that she works with the Foot Clan, we found out nothing about her.
What happened to the scenes with the turtles wearing trench coats in the streets? The "what are the chances of us surviving" line? The scene with April and Verne in the turtle's lair? There's so much stuff cut out!

I too would like to of seen/heard something of Hamato Yoshi, but I do like the Project Renaissance storyline regardless. I thought it was interesting to have something different, could definitely have been a lot worse.
Other than that I pretty much agree with every word you wrote! :D

Just gonna copy what I posted in the original spoilers thread;
First thoughts - enjoyable enough way to pass an hour and a half but as a movie it was terrible. Three guys really got paid to write this?!
This film seriously fell into the same trap Man of Steel did - it was an origin film but it relied heavily on prior knowledge of the franchise and characters as the writers just didn't put the work in for this film.
"Taken your armour to the next level" - so? We never saw the original so it's not an upgrade at all as we have no comparison
"Remember that thing you used to say when we were kids?" - erm no because he never said it or tried to say it in the sequence where we see them as kids! Just having Mikey yell it would have been great as a tip of the hat to the fans, but Raph specifically references something we've not seen like it's meant to be a pay off for that unseen event.
Raph's speech - honestly I felt it was a little over the top but it would have been fine if they'd shown any of that stuff in the film, but they didn't. Raph says he's going to leave once and that's it. It relies on you knowing the characters already because they didn't put any effort in to develop the characters or have proper character arcs. It's meant to be the emotional payoff but there's no real character arc to justify it, they didn't put the groundwork in to earn it so it just feels forced and hollow.
The designs do look better in motion (or maybe I've just gotten used to them) but they're still not great. I joked when I first saw them that the TMNT were wearing their personalities so the writers didn't have to write them in. Sadly I wasn't far off. There were no character assassinations and everyone was "in character" but there was no real depth either. It never felt like it went past "Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines". The run time is partly to blame for this, when you have 4 turtles, April, Splinter, Shredder and more all vying for screen time in a 90 minute movie someone is going to get the short straw but in this film it felt like everyone did. No one had a solid arc. The characters met up, had an adventure together and went home, that was it, there was no growth for anyone. April came closest with her wanting to be a real reporter rather than reporting on "froth" but that arc was dropped without any resolution.
Their new origin was beyond stupid. I'm fine with Sacks/Shredder being involved, I'm ok with April being there (nice IDW nod) but they were being injected with mutagen on a daily basis and only mutated after they left the lab? Really? April rescued the turtles and Splinter and then just let them go in the sewer?! What the heck?! Not only is that mind bogglingly stupid and makes no sense other than "well we needed to get them away from April and into the sewers" but it's also incredibly irresponsible of the writers, especially when they then say she "set them free". Great way to teach kids how to look after their pets, especially when you think about how many turtles were flushed during the 90s TMNT craze! Absolute idiots! The lab fire was incredibly unclear - did April's dad die in the fire or get shot by Sacks? If he died in the fire why did he commit suicide, why did he do it whilst April was there and why didn't he make sure all files were destroyed before burning himself to death? Sacks killing him makes more sense as it means he was interrupted in destroying the files but then why didn't April know Sacks was there or hear shots, why didn't Sacks know April was there and kill her? It's just a mess.
A mutated Splinter learning Ninjutsu from a book doesn't really ask any more suspension of disbelief that a pre-mutation Splinter mimicking Yoshi's moves so that doesn't really bother me (as others have said seeing it beats reading about it but you can easily argue that learning pre/post mutation cancels that out). However, the complete removal of Hamato Yoshi from the origin removes any real connection between Splinter and Shredder and with that it removes the driving force of their conflict. Here they fight simply because Splinter and the TMNT are the heroes and Shredder and The Foot are the villains. Even if Sacks had remained the Shredder there's still no real connection between the two, no cause for animosity. It's never personal and that's something it's always been in the past. I'm not against change but this one was not for the better, it just made it a more generic good guys vs bad guys conflict.
Which I guess brings me to Shredder. To be fair, whilst his design is over the top it's probably my favourite of the redesigns (Splinter is definitely the worst) and he's definitely felt like a powerful threat in the film. The guy playing him/voicing him is also fantastic, easily the best casting in the film. Sadly, the character is a mess because of the Sacks thing. I'm happy that they listened to the fans and scrapped the aliens script, but the white Shredder thing was different, at that point the script was done, casting complete and filming was taking place. At that point they were committed. If you know the history then it's obvious when you watch the film that Sacks was intended to be the Shredder and the Asian Shredder (who was never named) was added during the re-shoots after some hasty re-writing.
It's like they had no faith in their story. On one level I respect them for actually listening and trying to react to the criticisms, but if they couldn't do it without drastically affecting the narrative of the film they should have stuck to their guns or (as some fans said) introduced Saki in an epilogue or post-credits scene. By trying to paste him into the story they just messed up an already weak script even further. Sacks was clearly intended to be main villain, it's his plan, his company and by splitting the characters Shredder is reduced to simply being Sack's boss and the muscle for the fight scenes, he has no real character or motivation. They pretty much split 1 character into 2 to try and appease fans and the movie is worse for it. Karai also suffers as with Sacks now being Shredder's protege there's no real need for her character.
Logic takes some other pretty serious hits in this film too. April has a photo of the Turtles, is trying to convince her boss they exist but doesn't show her? Raph says he can't help as his shell is cracked so Don goes to help Leo, 30 seconds later Raph is smashing into vehicles using his cracked shell. They defeat Shredder using buck buck! Seriously? I get they wanted to show them doing it as a team but Shredder has been kicking their asses and defending against much more complex moves. They attacked him one at a time all on the same angle of attack, given the level of skill he'd already displayed in the fight there's no way that would have worked.
I'm sure there's more but those are the bits that really stuck out. Like I said at the start, I enjoyed it for what it was, it was fun to pass an hour and a half. I'm not even too disappointed, I went in expecting a big dumb popcorn blockbuster and I got one, sadly it was just even dumber than I was expecting. The worst part was that they just didn't try. It feels like they were trying to do something original with the alien script (bad as it was) and when fans rightfully complained they switched to a generic paint by numbers super hero movie approach, borrowing the docks scene from Batman Begins, the rooftop virus battle from Amazing Spider-Man and just adding the TMNT characters into the formula. There was no real emotion or heart to it and that's the worst thing of all.
Maybe I'm being unjustly harsh on the writers, maybe a lot of the issues come from them hacking it to pieces in the editing room to get that 90 minute run time and add in the Asian Shredder. After all, we know there's a lot of deleted scenes from this film, and it's obvious in the film where even more tweaks were made. I'd certainly be interested in seeing a Sacks as Shredder cut with all of the deleted scenes/original dialogue added back in. Given how fan reaction obviously had an impact on the direction of the film I can only hope that all of the criticisms fans are giving now will help shape the direction of the second for the better so the behind the scenes farce that was the production of this film doesn't happen again and we can have a stronger movie as a result.

Great piece there Chris.
Same point keeps coming up again and again...if only they had included a proper relationship between Shredder and Splinter, other errors could have been easier to swallow, but for me (and others) it seems the lack of any Shred/Splinter relationship was criminal.
It's illogical that lots of us are saying we enjoyed the movie, yet we can find so many bad points with it! Mad!

So I gave this a cinema watch mostly to see if my opinion altered any on seeing it on the big screen - it didn't.
However something jumped out at me that's kinda coincidental with the above discussion of the container not breaking; what is to stop Sacks and/or Shredder from just doing this all over again?
It's highly unlikely he will because they will inevitably want to do a different story in possible sequel but strictly speaking the Foot militia have the resources to build another tower and device to disseminate the disease and this time they have the advantage of the turtles and April not going after them to procure mutagen to save Splinter.
But they need mutagen to be the cure I hear you say? Ah but they had mutagen in their possession for long enough to analyze it (it still odd that no one else had a clue to make it. I get that April's father was the one who knew definitively how to make but did no one else at TCRI have a clue were to start? What were they doing for over a decade?) but we know they still as in the proposed sequel they want to use Bebop and Rocksteady.

I too wondered this.
Maybe it's this Thursday or Friday? As the film isn't "officially" released until this Friday.
But I've seen or heard nothing. Maybe I'll tweet a couple of the actors, see if they respond?
You'd think they'd have something, even if hardly any of the films cast turn up.

Croydon and the bits of London I see on my commute are the same. It's heavily publicised which is a good thing - plus the more I see the posters, buses etc the more I'm excited by the costumes etc.
Can't wait to see it but don't think I'll get to a cinema for a week :(

I saw it last Sunday thanks to the preview screenings but only in normal 3D. I'm hoping to see it again this weekend at IMAX!
My view echos many peoples, in that it is a really good film but with a few bits of lazy writing/changes that make no sense. For me it was interesting enough to forget about the cons whilst you're watching but it kind of hurts when you think about it after! Definitely not a bad movie though!

Interesting review Chris. Even though our reactions to the movie are very different I found your words thought-provoking. Here's my two cents ;)
"Taken your armour to the next level" - so? We never saw the original so it's not an upgrade at all as we have no comparison
I just figured it was a way of acknowledging that this wasn't just a standard suit of armour, but that it had been designed by scientists to make it capable of the nifty tricks we saw when in battle. Maybe this line could of been worded better, but without it (or something to the same affect) I think the audience would of questioned why his suit could do the things it could.
"Remember that thing you used to say when we were kids?" - erm no because he never said it or tried to say it in the sequence where we see them as kids!
I loved this line! Most of the people I know couldn't tell you the turtle's names, but they recognise 'Cowabunga!' as their catchphrase, so I don't think anyone needed to hear them say it before this scene. I also took it as if Raph was talking to the overgrown children in the audience, like myself, who used to yell it as kids. Made me feel warm and fuzzy like all trips down memory lane.
I for one thought the speech was great. Very moving and I'm so glad they showed this side of Raph and feel they did it well. As for knowing the characters, I think it's difficult for many of us here who are so familiar with the turtles to forget what we know about them when watching the film, which means it's tricky trying to judge how much we'd pick up on their identities from the film alone. I also think that fans who are very familiar with the characters may be looking too deeply, and in doing so miss the subtleties that reveal so much - tone of voice, facial expressions, body language. One example is when April wakes up and asks them what they are, they all choose a different word to represent themselves. As a recap, Leonardo takes on a serious tone and describes them as 'Ninjas', Raphael uses an aggressive almost threatening tone to add 'Mutants', whilst Donatello calmly brings things back into a factual perspective by explaining that 'Well, technically we're Turtles' , leaving Mikey to point out that they're also 'Teenagers' in his own whimsical way. I know this sounds very simplistic, but what I'm trying to get across is that I believe, even if I'd had no prior knowledge of TMNT, that this scene of literally a few seconds would of given me a reliable introduction into who these characters are as individuals. And that's just one example. These little clues and character traits are acknowledged constantly throughout the movie. I can't say how much people who are less familiar with the franchise will be able to connect with the characters, but it wasn't an issue for me. I'm seeing it again tomorrow with friends and my partner, and I'll be really interested to hear their views on this, considering none of them are shellheads.
I think this is one point many of us agree on. I always like it when characters have an interesting backstory, particularly when it effects the current relationship between them, and having no link between Shredder and Splinter was a poor choice in my eyes.
Yeah, Shredder was played really well, very intimidating. Still think he could of done with a purple cape though ;)
I really enjoyed Fichtner's performance and look forward to seeing him in the sequel, however I did feel there was too much of his character in favour of Shredder, which is the wrong way round. I think Karai's role as Chunin for the Foot Clan is still clear though and entirely necessary, just wish she'd been given more lines.
There was no real emotion or heart to it and that's the worst thing of all.
We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, although I confess it doesn't take much to stir my emotions when watching a film.
Overall I'm glad you had fun watching the film and aren't too disappointed. I would also echo your comments that it's great for the team behind TMNT to take on board the opinions of fans, however not at the expense of losing confidence in what they're trying to achieve. I dare say that's easier said than done, especially considering the massive backlash they endured throughout the making of this one. Roll on TMNT 2 :D

I just got back from seeing it again and I still enjoyed it. The screen was more bigger (not IMAX) which made the movie more epic (the screens in Luton are smaller and not so good)
It wasn't busy (only 10 people watching it, I was the only female there) but it was the 1pm showing so most people still at work or at school.
I asked if they had any of the special TMNT 3D glasses but Cineworld don't have them. I was going to go to the Odeon to see if they had them but I didn't have enough time as I had to catch my bus (as it's every hour and takes nearly over an hour to get home),
So does anyone know if Odeon, Vue, Empire or any other ones have the special 3D glasses.
I will probably go see it again :D

I wouldn't trust anything written in the sun! if its not got tits they won't like it will they
You'd think with Vernon staring at April's backside and the sexual humour it'd be right up The Sun's alley.
I'd like to think that the movie is just so bad that even The Sun can't condone it.
Surely a better way to convey that would be to actually establish the Shredder normally wears regular armor instead of a brief line explaining that the guy with no name is going to wear a new armor.
You also have to wonder why it was necessary for the character to have upgraded armor in the first place. To their credit it's clearly based on the armor for the '03 series albeit distorted through Bay's design aesthetic that says that everything has complicated but no one actually watched that show to see that despite wearing more intimidating armor they kept the selling point of a TMNT vs Shredder fight in the martial arts.
I'm not so sure about that. Cowabunga is their catchphrase in the current animated series nor was it in the previous version.
The weird thing about this movie is that puts in a lot of superficial aspects from the 80s cartoon with purpose invoking nostalgia from the older audience but tries to coat it in a weird way.
I get that feeling a lot from the movie. I get that they wanted to show the audience that they are aware of the ridiculousness nature but almost every scene comes off like they are making fun of the concept. At first some of the jokes were fine but after a while I found myself thinking "y'know this whole thing IS stupid"
The stuff that Raph was apoligising for was barely in the movie so it really has no emotional impact if this is the first depiction of TMNT you've properly seen.
The example you give of the characterisation would be fine if that wasn't the only aspect present in the movie. It makes the turtles seem like one note characters that can only act and react to things based on the descriptions in the classic theme song.
Considering that a lot of people liked that he was cast even those who didn't like the idea of white washing Shredder based on how good an actor he was I was curious as someone who hadn't seen him in much. Sadly I thought his acting was poor in parts but it's probably not his fault.
I certainly don't want to see him in the sequel. His character serves no purpose if he isn't going to be the Shredder then again neither was Karai in this movie either.
it's great for the team behind TMNT to take on board the opinions of fans, however not at the expense of losing confidence in what they're trying to achieve. I dare say that's easier said than done, especially considering the massive backlash they endured throughout the making of this one. Roll on TMNT 2 :D
I think it's pretty clear that they did lose confidence in what they were trying achieve otherwise we would have gotten The Blue Door script made into a movie and it's clear even as far as their section at the panel of comic con that they were confused and even a little upset they had to change it.
Of course you could say Paramount did good by ordering changes but even then there seemed to be more changes during filming that didn't seem to be connected to fan wishes which suggests they didn't have confidence in the movie they were making.
I suppose the real proof is how they approach the sequel if they really care about the fans. Sadly what little faith I had has been lost so I say roll on reboot.

Above from L to R : Me (with TMNT wristwatch and band) Mark, Danielle and my gorgeous Matthew. Looking very dapper in his long black leather jacket.
Second time around! We decided to pose with the controversial poster. The guy from The Giant Screen promised I could have the cardboard standee for my flat :) I can't wait to pick it up.
I was with my mum, my boyfriend Matthew and Danielle and her fiance Mark.
Loved it just as much as the first time.

TMNT tops the UK Box Office, knocking Gone Girl off the top spot.
TMNT did £4.75M ($7.70M) at the weekend (think it includes special previews) I reckon it will end up doing £27M + ($30M +) in total.
I wonder if TMNT will get the 2nd week at no 1 or will Fury (rated 15) knock it off the top spot. With it being the start of half term as well I expect it be pretty close. I expect The Book of Life will end up at no3/4.

I’ve delayed posting a review because I wanted to be certain that my views wouldn’t be distorted by the excitement. If I had posted immediately after emerging from the cinema, all I would have been able to say is “love it love it love it love it love it love it love it...”
I’ve now seen it five times and for all its failings, I have to say that overall, I do love it. Was it everything I hoped for? No. But that didn’t stop me enjoying it.
A few comments:
Scope - This film has a noticeably wider scope than any TMNT film before it, which makes it feel exciting. I had the stupidest grin on my face all the way through - every viewing - from the amazing opening credits to the vast city-wide climactic end. This was an aspect which I loved about it.
The plot - No two ways about it: it felt rushed - like it was written to be a 2-hour film, and had to condense. I feel that many of the apparent plot holes might have been explained or reduced if the film was permitted a 2 hour run time. Another 20 minutes would have sat a lot more comfortably with me. As it stands it is far too hurried, with important elements such as character development taking a back seat. I’m intrigued by credited characters we never saw, such as Baxter Stockman and wasn’t there supposed to be a kid in it too (besides child April, I mean)? This makes me wonder how much of this film is sitting on the cutting room floor. Whilst the plot has been hurt by edits and rewrites, credit where credit is due, I thought the plot was in the main a good one and very fitting for ninja turtles on the big screen. I mean, the idea of the turtles being captured for scientific study is really upsetting, so it worked on both a narrative and emotional level. As much as many people want to see Krang, Utrom, mutants, Dimension X etc I feel that such a plot would risk alienating a large section of the audience, so I think they’ve done a good job in getting to the core of Ninja Turtles: family, and building a plot around that, which is relatable and enduring. In particular, I LOVED the early scenes, where we saw a turtle just a flash over the skyline. I live for that stuff in TMNT.
Themes - Old favourite, never fails. Family. My favourite line was actually Shredder’s scornful rebuke of Splinter: “Your sons? You think you’re their father?” To me, this line was perfect. It completely demonstrates the selfless unconditional love of Splinter and the turtles, and the ignorance of those who can’t understand it.
Plot holes - I’ve probably not got anything to say that hasn’t already been pointed out on this forum. Some of the plot holes are immense. Is this the result of bad writing, bad editing or a restrictive run time? No idea, but I would love to see a director’s cut.
Musical score - Fine. Seemed heavily influenced by Danny Elfman’s score to Batman. The main TMNT theme is powerful and has stuck with me.
Turtle design - Grew on me. By the end I was accepting the faces, although the lips were odd. Raphael’s size felt too cartoonish for the realism of the film, so he jarred slightly and felt out of place and less believable. The size of the turtles was pointless: the concept of ‘ninja turtles’ loses some of its delicious irony when attached to these massive hulks. Small turtles with high skill is much more interesting to me than massive turtles with lots of power. But what I do have to say is that the effects for the turtles were freakin’ fantastic. Their individuality, their characters, their expressions completely shone through and is the result of some truly talented animators. The look on Raphael’s face when he saw Splinter wounded stood out to me. The sweat running down Donnie’s face when he was trying to stop the count-down on the roof, Raphael’s tears and his attempts to compose himself afterwards.... it was just breath-taking work on behalf of the actors and the animators.
Indestructible turtles - A mistake, I think. Why should the turtles be bullet proof? To what end? How does that serve the plot? Same applies to Raphael, almost dead one second and the next, up and running. As long as nothing can harm these turtles, there is nothing at stake, so the audience is less invested.
Splinter design - I’m not sure whether it was the design or the fact that I am not used to hearing his voice without the Japanese accent, but Splinter didn’t work for me. I didn’t get his wisdom, his gentleness from this version of him. Plus I’m pretty sure that seizing one of your sons by the throat is abuse.
The backstory - Personally, I think that losing the Japanese backstory was a mistake. That is one of the elements that has so far lent the TMNT a certain thematic richness. This film felt like it lacked soul due to its absence. Sacks’s link with Japan felt like a last-minute add-on to shut us fans up. Whilst I admire the producers for taking fan feedback on board, it strikes me that they took on that we wanted the Japanese link, but never really asked themselves WHY it is so important? The backstory of Shredder and Splinter adds depth and heart and history, the urge for vengeance, the source of rage and grief and deep philosophical power. Without this, the whole thing felt a bit shallow.
Characters - I wanted more of the turtles. 20 more minutes would have fleshed out the turtles a bit, especially Raphael, who would have benefitted from a bit more “arseholery” to validate the speech at the end. I know there has been some controversy over the speech, but actually I thought it was very well done. It is important to show how fragile Raphael is, especially when the writers opt for a more aggressive front for him. I thought it was well delivered and beautifully acted and animated.
New origin story - I’ve no issue with it. In fact it made sense. I’m not really a fan of all the extraordinary coincidences, such as them having been April’s pets, but it didn’t bother me too much. As for learning martial arts from a book. No. Just no. It can’t be done any more than a rat can learn by mimicking karate from a cage. I think this will always be a massive hurdle for writers in TMNT.
Martial arts - Some good moments, but in the main any real skill was hidden from view by tight camera angles and chaotic mise-en-scene. Shredder v Splinter was great, and Leo had an awesome triple kick-conversion sequence. There were a couple of nice weapons moments, but I would have loved to have seen more, beyond flying and summersaulting through the air... which isn’t really martial arts, just fancy decoration.
Director-Style / Cinematography - Liebesman, sadly, has not used the opportunity to define his own style, nor does the DOP seem to have done anything entirely original. It feels like a Michael Bay film.
Megan Fox - She did a good job. Will she win an oscar for this? No, but she had to carry the film and she succeeded. Actually, I think she made a very good April.
Karai - What a waste. Karai is one of the most awesome characters in TMNT lore and the opportunity to give her some interesting exposure was wasted. Once again, another 20 minutes on the run-time would have permitted this.
What I loved - the kiddie turtles (so cute), the introduction to the turtles as blink-and-you-miss-them vigilantes, the feel of New York City, the turtles’ characters - all really well executed, the cinematic scope, especially the scene where they run over the rooftops, plummet through the air and into the sewers. I couldn’t stop smiling. And the bit here they are donning their masks for the first time. Also, Donatello. Every moment of him. My favourite version of him to date.
What I hated - Raphael’s sun-glasses, Mikey’s beads, the size of the turtles, especially Raphael, and the too-short run-time.

I too would like to of seen more of Karai and a stronger link for Splinter and the turtles to Japanese culture than discovering a discarded book on ninjitsu. But who knows? Maybe we'll get both next time around.
And I so hope we do get TMNT2 the same time as the US, that would be sweet! :D

Overall I didn't think the movie was too bad, it's not good but it's not bad.
What I didn’t like:
•The plot was rushed and cliché and actually felt for me like a long episode from the 80's, the entire movie was over the span of one day! We have fun, we deal with the problem, we go have fun again.
•Literally no connection between Splinter and Shredder and losing the Japanese back story made me sad.
•Little in the way of character development and it felt like Raph's confession at the end came out of nowhere.
•Hate the foot
•I missed the family element in the movie, they behaved like family but it didn't feel right to me, this may be because we didn't get to see much of the turtle’s relationships with each other.
•Poor dialogue and poor taste in humour at times.
•Splinters design based on Rufus the naked mole rat also OMG turtle abuse, not hashi but grabbing leo around the throat! 2014's splinter is no1: harsh rat dad on my list.
•None of the turtles really had time to show off their personalities, we just got a few snippets here and there, Leo I think getting the shortest straw.
•Vern
•Oh Hello head hench-woman who looks like Karai but doesn't say or do anything like Karai.
•Don’t throw in references when they are not needed, why say cowabunga at that moment? Why announce that you were about to say it?
•Your crush is not cute Mikey :(
What I liked:
•The turtle’s faces grew on me and I enjoyed their designs portraying their personalities.
•Megan Fox was actually ok, I think she played April very well.
•Some of the humour was great
•Personal touches to the turtles like Donnie’s dorky laugh
•Great action sequences although may need more ninja.
•If Raph’s confession wasn't so surprising I would have choked up
•Good cinematography
•Good score
•A unexplained casting of Whoopi Goldberg is always the best kind
Other:
•Some things I found hilarious when they weren't meant to be like indestructible turtles, being bullet proof and when Raph jumped through the side of the van I lost it.
•I also cracked up over Shredder, save that costume for the video game Shreddertron.
Questions:
•How come Raph couldn't break through the glass in the lab but Mikey, Donnie and Leo can somersault through it? Adrenaline trumps physics?
•How is Raph not dead? His shell was cracked, we heard it, he said it, but nope tis but a flesh wound I can shell surf down this mountain into a moving van.
Conclusion:
I really liked the movie, but for the wrong reasons. While I enjoy the good moments I am mostly laughing at the bad stuff. It feels like a so bad it’s good movie but the franchise has suffered far worse and this movie is nowhere near our lowest point. For those who like it for all the right reasons, enjoy!

Yeah, I know. It seems to me that this film spent a lot more time on action sequences (not a bad thing), which left less time for the character-based stuff. Has anyone actually timed how long they spent zooming down that snowy hill? I haven't, but I'd bet it's longer than any action sequence in previous films.
Oh My god, We are going to get TMNT 2 at the same time as the US on June 3rd 2016. :D
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3949660/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_dt
I know IMDB isn't the best place to go so I put in a search and saw it mentioned here.
http://www.launchingfilms.com/release-schedule/schedule.php?sort=date
So keep crossing your fingers and hope they stick to it.
Didn't the UK initially have August as the published release date for this one? I'm sure they did and they changed it earlier in the year. Here's hoping they don't pull that crap on us again!
Great review jenna. I love this...
Cheers. I agree that it'd be great to see expansion of this in the sequel.
Yup. This.

Saw the movie again today (3 times now), this time the screen was full ( a lot of kids today ) and everyone (including adults) were enjoying it, and were all laughing through out.

Yeah it was supposed to come out in August over here, but it was going to be released in June (before they changed the date) in the US.

I absolutely loved the new movie, me and my wife both went into the cinema cautiously but from the opening cartoon sequence to the closing titles we loved it and both smiled throughout.
The set pieces were great ticking off the list of sewer and rooftop battles, great character development, sounded great and SFX were amazing and I thought there was real fan service; the story of how the turtles became the TMNT is very close to the IDW origin in the comics, the main cast are all there (if you accept that Sacks is Baxter Stockman's replacement) bar Casey Jones.
I did think it could have been half an hour longer though i'm not sure what i would have extended - maybe seen a little more Turtles at home or something?
All in all this is the best film i've seen in a long time, we're already planning on seeing this again. I liked the redeveloped Shredder too even though i thought i would hate the new look - it worked well and thought seeing Saki's face scarred was a nice nod to the Nick cartoon. I even thought Megan Fox was great as April and Arnett as Vernon - i think this was well cast.
How funny was the elevator scene - that killed me, the whole cinema laughed at that.
Did i blink and miss undercover Raph? that seems to be the only toy from the movie i see but it wasn't in the movie at all.

Thats a shame, considering how many times the Turtles went out undercover in the Fred Wolf cartoon it would have been a nice nod.
one more thing:
Working in TV in post production it bugged the hell out of me that some shots are flipped - Raph's scar on his lip kept moving to both sides of his mouth.
Considering how good the movie was i'll let it slide though...

I so agree with this. I would have happily sat through another hour just to see more of the dynamic between the turtles.

Also they had a premier of the film on the opening night, and if you watch the video it looks like they all got given TMNT goodie bags. I wonder what was in the bags? Did anyone on the forum get to go to the event? Would love to know!
If I get to the event I'll def take some pics!
So I popped over to the "House of Vans" on Sunday. Basically the TMNT section is just one corridor containing about 20 pieces of art. All were pretty rad, I took pictures of about 15 pieces or so. I'll try and post them one day this week.
I did a bit of digging and it looks like they had a load of extra stuff on the opening night - for example here https://twitter.com/HouseOfVansLDN/status/525692002919546881 it shows a t-shirt and some art on an easel. Those pieces weren't there on Sunday.
Also if you check out the Kawasaki website they have a competition to win a TMNT 2014 film branded motorbike! Enter here: http://www.kawasaki.co.uk/en/products/pages/teenage_mutant_ninja_turtles?Uid=0839UVgMC15fXloMD lBdXF1RWglZCQxQW1BeWwoOWlpZUVg

It looks like the bikes were at the opening event too: ...can't find the link or image now. Nevermind!

I liked it too(saw it yesterday night) I must say....apart from the often mentioned stupid decisions like april being the most important character in the whole movie etc..I would also vote in for more turtles!it felt like if you had seen the trailers or some tv spots you really had seen all the turtles stuff that was in the movie!;(...
for me personally I would really enjoy seeing much more of them rooftop running and training above the cities roofs!I was so happy to see this at least getting in this movie for a brief moment at the beginning.sadly it was only that one moment and they immediatelly jumped of the building to get into the sewers...that moment when april snapped that pic is a perfect lil moment.something like that only much longer would rule in my eyes;)
I also had an idea about the sequel:shredder said something along the lines that the foot is grounded in myth for todays people..and thta he wishes to correct that.
well, I thought why not let saki return with the real foot in the next chapter (the sequel) and give us the bug eyes ninja again...also he could get ridd of the ridiculous transformer suit (which felt so unnecessary to me) and fullfill his goal...it could be that shredder used his men for this movies plot as decoys for sachs...so he sort of lend his muscle to sachs plan here...
last edit:man, I envy you guys who get to see this multiple times..over here its pretty expensive:i payed 26 euros for two tickets..that's 33 us dollars!can you imagine that?

Saw it for a second time now.
I have to say there are some bits that are hugely cringe worthy (especially Raphs speech at the end). I was squirming in my seat at times.
But it also had so many bits that had potential. But then they blew it. Even small bits. I loved it when April phoned the guy in the office to say there was a robbery at the docks, but the guy basically hung up on her...that sort of thing was straight out of the first movie for me.
Still enjoyed it thoroughly though, think the snow chase is the best bit for me.

I'm not surprised that scene landed well with most viewers, even some of those who didn't like the overall movie. I would almost promise that scene was the first one they plotted, roughed out, storyboarded, and pitched to the producers as a way to show off what they were planning to do with the movie. It's like the entire rest of the movie "grew" out of that one scene, and that one scene was given way more attention from the beginning than anything else in the movie.

Wouldn't be surprised if you're right. Didn't the scene (or a version of it) first show up in the leaked aliens script?
Leo656
10-30-2014, 05:09 PM
Pretty sure it did, or at least something very similar.
It's common with big budget flicks. Studios and producers want some idea of where all the money is going, and before they'll approve a project they want assurance there is a big flashy scene that will "hook" people into paying to see the final product. It's also rare that an entire script is trashed, even if it's terrible - they pay people to write 'em, remember - and stuff always gets carried over in some form, especially the big action scenes, so long as they're not prohibitively expensive.
For example, the plane-catching scene in "Superman Returns" was lifted almost entirely from the abandoned "Superman: Flyby" script by J.J. Abrams, and featured heavily in the film's marketing. Same thing, the producers already had one "big" scene they knew "Had" to be included, and worked the rest out from there.
It's not the most organic approach to making a movie - like in this movie's case, stapling a snowy mountain peak onto the outskirts of NYC, somehow, simply because the scene HAD to be in the movie no matter what because it was the "money shot" - but it's extremely common. And a lot of times, that one "money" scene, if done well, can convince people the rest of the movie was great, even if it kind of wasn't. Which is also by design.
OK, I'm not in the UK, but I'm from the UK, and we got the movie here in China a week after you guys, so it's more timing... And I am technically a UK viewer !
So... The movie was great. I had a great time watching it yesterday at the cinema. I was surprised at how busy the cinema was ( it was playing at the number 1 screen at grand gateway 66) and the audience was all Chinese except me. So it is finding an audience. It will be interesting to see later in the week, what the turnout has been.
Back to the movie. I felt it had everything in there. Action aplenty, humour, drama, gratuitous but shot !!
The music was strong, and I realized that I was humming the theme as I walked home.
Funniest line. Mikey with the comment about the cat (I won't spoil it).
The snow Chase was really well done, and the gasps it was getting from the audience was a testament to how good it was. Mind you, I never knew that there was kind of terain 5 minutes from NYC !!!
All in all, a good movie, and I will be adding the bluray to the collection.

TMNT returned to no 1 at the UK Box Office :D
Awesome, so pleased it's doing well, especially considering the delayed release.
I've now seen it 3 times myself with various people. I enjoy it just as much if not more each time. I'm genuinely gutted for those of you that are disappointed by it, hope the second one pleases more folks on here. Everyone I've seen it with have also enjoyed it, despite some initially being sceptical or disinterested.
I asked my friends and family if they felt as though they got to know the characters (particularly the turtles) well enough in this film and they seemed surprised at the question as they felt they got to know them really well. Because we were discussing this earlier in the thread I thought it would be helpful to add their point of view considering it's difficult for those of us who already know the personalities of the turtles to judge this. I guess us fans always want to see more character development, to see the characters we know be tested and grow, but from the people I've asked, it seems this movie did enough to not only introduce each turtle to a new audience, but also give a feeling of attachment to them.
Leo656
11-04-2014, 08:29 PM
I'd venture a guess that, to most people, it's an odd question in and of itself. "They're turtles who know kung-fu and live with a rat; what's to know?" is probably the stock answer. Thus, little things like character development and anyone actually having an arc or a journey is inconsequential, because I'd say 9/10s of people who went to see the movie weren't looking for things like that to begin with. "The nerdy one wears glasses" is as deep as it need be for that audience.
Of course anyone who went to see it would know the Turtles "well enough" by the end of it: They're cardboard cut-out cartoon stereotypes, all of whom are more or less exactly the same as they were at the beginning. "What's to know?"
I confess, I'm spoiled. All my ideas of how movies should express themes of brotherhood and family come from watching both "Young Guns" movies a thousand times. Writers and producers could also learn a few things from that movie about how to properly juggle a ton of characters without reducing everyone to a punchline or a soundbite. Everyone also has their own arc and ends up a different person at the end than at the start. It's basically amazing at everything. Just sayin'.

Watched this a second time over the weekend.
I took my 13 year old brother-in-law and his friend, they loved it. They grew up watching 2k3 and the b-I-l reads my idw comics so he knows a lot about the turtles.
They both loved it and liked the action and character design, they really liked that you didn't need to know too much history.
They also loved the opening too. The biggest complaint I heard from them is that they both like the Raph in disguise figure but there isn't a Raph in disguise in the film!

I'm not a huge Transformers fan, as in, I only know like, the main three character robots by name, but I enjoyed the first film very much. I still think it stands up pretty well as a decent, if silly, sci-fi/action flick that hits a wide audience. However, I thought the second one was every bit as awful as the first one was good, and they never really recovered from the second one making more based on brand name alone despite being so awful.
Really, Hollywood on the whole never recovered from it, because TF2 gave them the message that you can put out any ol' POS, and if the brand name is strong, people will still pay to see it even if they know better and hate themselves later. Why we encourage them time and again instead of staying home and watching good movies, I don't know.

That's basically the case. And like I've said before, that's fine for those who are satisfied with that. But we've been really spoiled with comic book, superhero and genre movies that actually have very strong characters and plots, legitimate character arcs, and hold up as quality movies instead of just "dumb popcorn fun", while also being handled by people who treat the properties' histories with respect and reverence and care a great deal about getting it right.
They had a great opportunity to reintroduce the TMNT to the modern era and produce something on that level. But they didn't care enough. Like Transformers, it was all just about monetizing the brand. No love, no heart.

This is my first post. shame its gunna be full of negativity but ive got to be honest.
This movie was terrible on so many levels i dont know where to begin... :/
the cartoony intro felt out of place and rushed and cheaply made
The story and origin was all over the place
the foot sucked, the makers missed the mark here, they had an opportunity to do something different from all the other movies but went for guns :/ ninjas vs guns is not interesting. they could of had ninjas vs ninjas and had some good fight scenes, put the turtles against real trained fighters with similar skill sets. dont put them against cowards with guns.
shredder was powerful but had no identity or depth just a no name in a suit you hardly see him out the suit and when the suits on theres no face just a static mask so theres no expression to relate to. just felt hollow
The turtles design is terrible its just really really bad. they dont look like turtles nor do the look like humans, they just look like giant hulking ninja troll fish. their disgusting design took me out the movie everytime they were on screen also theyre so pointlessly huge it makes no sense they cant even sneak about because they are huge and heavy. im all up for a new design im not a nostalgia freak that thinks the old movie is the only way they should look i really want to see a new design and a reboot, but not this!!. this design is just terrible they look like theyve been smacked in the face with a frying pan. their heads look like fruit like a giant Pair or Melon with eyes and trout fish lips. its literally the worst design you could come up with and trust me i know design coz im a designer and im astounded that this design got green-lit. seriously wtf!
splinters design is even worse i felt sick everytime he was on screen and his voice didnt match and he was a straight up dick to the turtles. we're supposed to feel sad when hes crushed under the rubble but it didnt work because he did nothing but hit the turtles and shout at them
uggggh this movie.... im not even gunna bother talking about april and her ridiculous amount of screen time...
i cant find a single good thing to say about this movie i didnt even like the action scenes because for the most part you cant make out whats going on and its so over blown it looks like a video game the best way to hide CGI is to constantly have the camera move and theres a lot of that...
i could say that at least its good that the movie did well financially, but id rather it was a total flop so theyd be forced to sell the rights to someone else that actually knows and cares about the material coz its clear this movie is just a cash grab with no passion or sole.
its actually super depressing to think theres going to be another one of these movies and maybe more :/ and its sad to read all these reviews from genuine turtles fans that can clearly see through all the franchise milking ******** going on
i genuinely dont have 1 single good thing to say about this movie so ill stop ranting now but it just had to be said.

There's so many things in this movie that bugged me. One for example.. I feel the movie was too focused on April. They might as well called it "The April O Neil Movie".
they just look like giant hulking ninja troll fish.
Hahaha, this is the best and funniest description I've read of their design. Spot on.
its actually super depressing to think theres going to be another one of these movies and maybe more :/
Yeah. This was a ****** movie, but we've had that before with TMNT3 etc, but the real depressing thing is that it will be three years or more until the next live action Turtles movie, and it will most likely be just as awful.

This is one complaint that doesn't make sense to me. Plenty of rich people do incredibly evil things for even more money. Just look around the news. People getting screwed over by banks in financial collapse, underhanded deals to make more money, monopoly and other bad business practices. Just cause someone is rich doesn't mean they don't want to be even richer.

How about the fact that the plan was stupid and didn't make sense?
Sachs/Shredder are going to release a Toxin that'll probably kill a good portion of New York, from Sachs' own building in the middle of the day.
Then they think they'll make a lot of money by selling the antidote to whoever.
Did they really think no one would notice or what?

You forgot that the antidote turned out to be able to mutate tiny pet turtles into walking talking monsters. How was that supposed cure the people that were infected by their toxin?

And apparently, according to the novelization, the reason Sachs and Shredder were still at Ground Zero was they didn't even HAVE the antidote synthesized yet, but they were gonna release the toxin anyway. I guess they're both really good at holding their breath or something.
I can't take it. It's absurd. Like NO effort went into writing this thing. Like, it's comical how badly-written it is. Or at least, it'd be comical if it was something I don't care about instead of Ninja Turtles. The entire "story" is literally, "Ehhhhh, whatever. They ninja around and eat pizza. Kids will love it. Anybody else who'd pay money for a movie about Kung Fu turtles is too stupid to know what's what anyway."
So we gonna stop proving these guys right anytime soon, or.........?

This is one complaint that doesn't make sense to me. Plenty of rich people do incredibly evil things for even more money. Just look around the news. People getting screwed over by banks in financial collapse, underhanded deals to make more money, monopoly and other bad business practices. Just cause someone is rich doesn't mean they don't want to be even richer.
Didn't April say that Baxter was already rich and powerful in the 2003 cartoon but he was still trying to attain evil domination? The mouser plan was infinitely superior to toxins flooding New York. After seeing that poor Foot Dude who died when Karai 'masked' him during the movie, I don't think there will be much of a New York left to rule.
