View Full Version : Official Ep Discussion: S3 Ep3: "Buried Secrets"
The sad thing is I've seen people for real, the real world act 10 times dumber in a relationship or anything in general than anything I've ever seen in this show. Every day, you look in the paper and the dumbest thing you've ever seen is one upped the next day by something more asinine.
Perhaps is why I don't get where people get this stuff as poorly written. Hell, from what I've seen people do it's more properly written than poorly written, because you witness stupid crap done every day.
There's almost no such thing as "poorly written" anymore for you can turn around see something you thought was absolutely unheard of, and boom...there it is before your eyes.

Just wanna have nice chats with people who enjoy the same adorkable Turtles, is that so wrong...

I feel for people when something seems to be a big letdown for them. Partly I wonder if the movie debating got everyone into that mode, or if it was already this way before I ventured into online-fan territory.
I SO know how you feel. This was the main reason I joined this forum. The only fans I could talk to were on Deviantart, Tumblr, and IMDB. This seemed the most direct way to really CHAT with fans and find out things about the franchise that interested me. Yeah, the new show is far from perfect and, if I really focused on it, I tend to be a bit nitpicky too. But I can't think of one version of the Turtles that was 100%. Even the classic comics had some flaws, like how the Turtles had that same "gritting teeth" expression in almost every panel they were fighting in.
I guess when this show is on the same network as Avatar, people expect more from it. That was a show that was (and still is) incredibly well-thought out and told. I suppose, deep down, we want this to be on the same level.
Hey, the old show(s) had just as many flaws as this one, if not more. Let's just focus on how Turtles makes us FEEL instead of what we should or shouldn't be seeing, ok?
There's almost no such thing as "poorly written" anymore for you can turn around see something you thought was absolutely unheard of, and boom...there it is before your eyes.
I agree with your earlier point about the awkward teenage romance aspect not being poorly written (I think the writing on it is fine, people just don't like it, which is also fine - I myself am tired of it), but totally disagree with the last part. Bad writing exists in the face of anything. Bad writing absolutely exists.
As a lurker who's finally popped up on this forum, I agree that it tends to lean on the negative side here lately. That said, I can't begrudge people not liking what they don't like and getting the chance to express that just as freely as those who do like it. Someone earlier posted that they liked the episode and has been all but ignored while the thread has opted to once again debate differences in taste. Just sayin' :tsmile:

There's almost no such thing as "poorly written" anymore for you can turn around see something you thought was absolutely unheard of, and boom...there it is before your eyes.Maybe that 's why this doesn't bother me much anymore, like it did in the very beginning because it felt a little realistic where Donnie was concerned.
He's never had any interaction with anyone other than his brothers and Splinter. Season 1 he came across as extremely awkward. To me, it's like a child who's been homeschooled all his/her life, and didn't have much interaction with those outside of that environment and then learning how to when finally out in the "real world", like a friend of mind. This is how I view Donnie.
Also, it's still natural to try to get the attention of the person you like by trying to impress him/her or trying to get to know him/her, which is also realistic, which Donnie is doing. It's almost instinctive, isn't it?
For me, though, the only time I was semi-bothered by this was in the Ho Chan ep because both Donnie and Casey came across as extremely out of character to me in the beginning and when fighting against the Purple Dragons in the museum, because we'd seen both fighting enemies together with April around before and how it didn't jeopardize the mission or task over it.
So that 's why I feel people are a bit nitpicky with the romance stuff. Not like you can really do anything about it until either April tells both to back off, admits to liking one of them, or have something happen at the end of the series, but until then, why complain over a romance subplot anyway?
I guess, for me, actual plot points that actually affect the overall story is more important to be critical of, like this recent ep with April's mother raising more questions than answers. The fact that the Kraang have been messing with the O'Neil family for years makes season 1's pursuit of Kirby and other scientists pointless, right?

Disregard my opinion. It's sh*t. I read some of the other stuff in the thread. I really read into it and watched the episode over. When you pay attention, the problems really do come out.

People wouldn't be complaining as much if it was written well....but it isn't...so it's annoying to watch it.....it's annoying to be reminded every episode it exists and it's annoying to have full episodes dedicated to it. :ohwell:

I think people are not liking how she's coming across as some sort of tease, to both Casey and Donnie, and it's equally annoying that either of them are actually putting up with it. Or even better yet, Raphael. Mr Blunt. He's already said his piece to Casey, and Donnie, but I want him to finally grab April by the arm, and shake some sense in to her to stop playing with his brother's and best friend's heart, and either pick one, or just leave them alone. Even all of the reviewers online are thinking April is nothing but a big tease.

Because it being a "kid's show" means it can never garner criticism whatsoever.
Being a show for kids doesn't mean it's okay for it to suffer with bad writing or overdone clichés, which is what most here have been critiquing it with. Just because kids are less discerning when it comes to what they watch doesn't mean you have to insult their intelligence so blatantly.
I'm sorry, but that phrase/term has really become a pet-peeve of mine when it's used as a weak defense against criticizing kid-oriented material and pretty much implies kids are so stupid that they'll like anything regardless of the quality they get something in.

Is anyone else excited for the possible return of the Punk Frogs? I really hope that is where they are headed with that final scene.
The Punk Frogs are confirmed. Jon Heder is going to voice Napoleon Bonafrog and use his Napoleon Dynamite voice to do it. Not a big fan of that movie, so I'm not really looking forward to hearing him, but I am interested to see where they'll take the Punk Frogs.
Finally got round to watching this last night. The Thing is one of my favourite films of all time, so naturally I highly appreciated it being used as the basis for this episode. Big thumbs up for that.
This episode actually made me feel like it would scare the living **** out of most little kids watching it though. :P
Renae Jacobs was great and I actually really liked Seth Green's performance this time around. Maybe it's because I'm slowly getting used to his voice or maybe it's because he didn't use his Chris Griffin voice as much this time, y'all know the one I mean. :P His simple, straightforward deep voice is much more suitable for Leonardo.
Really excited to see what they do with the frogs, I always enjoyed them in the 80s show.
This is by far my favourite episode of this season so far. I do wish they'd get back to the main plot however.
Honestly, I've never heard Chris Griffin come out of Seth when he's speaking as Leo. It's always just sounded like his regular voice and maybe just a bit deeper.

Amazon FINALLY got this episode uploaded Tuesday morning, so I was able to watch it last night. It's my favorite out of the three we've seen. I think Renae Jacobson was awesome as April's mom. I don't think she's lost her touch as a VA at all. Seems to me that April's mom was supposed to sound a bit out there and slightly creepy from the beginning. I loved the reference to The Thing and Stephen King's It.(I think the It novel was better than the movie but mustn't chase rabbits.) Still haven't seen The Freaks, but should probably get around to that at some point.
I wonder why Momthing was pouring mutagen into the lake. Has anyone else speculated on this yet? Could it have still been under the impression that the Kraang were still testing the mutagen? Eh, who knows? Can't wait to see The Croaking. I loved how they set up the next episode. Also excited about Dream Beavers, but uh, I'm not sure how I feel about Speed Demon. I do wish we could see some B story regarding New York in a few episodes before the guys leave the farmhouse. I'm not even there and I'm going stir-crazy. Don't get me wrong, I like the farmhouse stuff quite a lot. I just want to see what everyone else is up to in NYC. That's honestly the only negative thing I could come up with. Other than that, I've enjoyed these three episodes, and look forward to new episodes starting Nov 7th.
Gotta agree concerning Seth Green. I think he's doing fine as Leo. I remember loving him in Buffy and Angel, so I wasn't apprehensive at all. Leo sure sounds as if he's on the mend. And like some of you, I was glad to see Raph holding his own a bit more in this episode. It was a fantastic story, and I'm thinking about freezing myself in carbonite until November.

It'd be great if Creep returned, Ashwolf. He was one of my favorite mutants. I'd love seeing a Creep/Slash throwdown eventually. Warhorse, ya read my mind. I was just thinking about Slash showing up at the farmhouse the other day. That would certainly lift Raph's spirits if it were to happen, sigh but doubtful. It'd also be fun seeing Snakeweed going up against Creep. Hopefully they'll revisit him at some point. Anywho, regarding Slash, I suppose we'll have to wait to see him until the boys return to New York. Ya never know though.

Creep + Slash would be cool... but assume it requires, uh... "location amnesia"? Unless they for some ungodly reason decide to take the Creep jar back to NYC with them. (No, Donnie, put that down, just leave it there...)
Otherwise I assume this farmhouse is certainly a bit of a drive away and would be a massive coincidence that Slash manages to find the place on his own.

To my understating the Newtralizer is an alien, though if he came as is or if the Kraang screwed with him, who knows.
Personally I don't think he's a mutant, based on the fact that he reclaimed his weaponry/gear upon getting loose from the cell in his first episode. Since he already had that stuff fitted to him and confiscated by the Kraang, then I doubt he'd been mutated while captive by them. If he was... I assume he'd have to have gotten away at some point, created that gear and was later recaptured.
Or at least that's my theory.

Yeah, I'm also thinking Newtralizer is an alien. The Kraang even call him an alien more than once. Funny that they never call humans aliens. And yeah, I guess Slash, Splinter, and LH could teleport to the farmhouse, but the writers probably want to make us wait a bit longer for that New York payoff. lol I can just see Donnie picking up Creep's jar when returning to NYC. Well, the reason I was wondering. He is some sort of salamander. We know there are Triceraton aliens, and now we possibly have salamander type aliens. I was just wondering, with Mona Lisa being a lizard like mutant, if she does show up, they might just make her part of Newtralizer's race? Considering he's already connected to Raphael, it would make sense Raphael is the one who ends up coming across her path one day.

Pretty good episode, though I still don't get how April just solves problems with supernatural light beams since I still don't like the idea of a non-100% human April, but at least it had a nice buildup. I feel that Renae Jacobs was pitched to sound a bit lower than her still rather high pitched voice, and it clearly sounds like an older April coming from her OT voice. But when she not just got angry, but super angry when this "mom-thing" was in this monster with all of the Turtles, it really was a scary sight. Nice job for hinting at what's to come at the end, and good job with the references. In the end, it shows how Mikey has strong ESP and while this brings out the N in TMNT, its better not to get so ahead of yourself.
Overall: 7/10

It's actually telepathy of some sort from her Kraang genes. She's able to at least hear the Kraang's telepathic thoughts (happened only once when the Kraang were meditating) and can send telepathic waves that so far can sense Kraang technology (the communication orb) and other things Kraang-related (the mutants and the Kraang themselves) and even damage Kraang tech and the Kraang (It fried a drill, and managed to stun Kraang Prime for a few moments).

Overall: 7/10Notice that April's powers usually don't come out or are used unless under a lot of stress, or if dealing with stuff connected to the Kraang?
Seems if they wanted this power to be used all of the time, a perfect time to use it would've been in Target April O'Neil when all those Footbots finally caught her and were about to kill her. Seems it's always Kraang related.

So....People are taking it too seriously because they acknowledge things they don't like??
Or have we gotten to the point where criticism of the show in any form is frowned upon?
Siiiiiiigh.....
The recent episodes have made me FEEL bored and annoyed. Am I not allowed to say anything about it on this discussion forum?
Jesus Christ. I didn't even hate the episode at all! This whole 'Don't ruin the fluffy puppies and butterflies fantasy world with your opinions' business is bugging me though.

I'm really digging the direction the show is taking. Love the nods to the 1990 movie / original comic. Fantastic episode! Altough I don't think Seth Green's a good Leo...

What the hell were they thinking?! This is still supposed to be aimed at kids right? I just watched this today with my boys and it freaked them both out. My 2 year old who has never been scared of anything he's watched on TV before was backing away from the screen asking "Mummy, what's that?" in an unusually timid voice, whilst my 6 year old stayed fairly quiet throughout. An hour or so after putting them to bed my eldest is screaming my name with tears running down his cheeks saying he's had a nightmare. He's not one who's easily frightened but it took me ages to calm him down (watching good old 80's turtles and unboxing my new LARP figures helped).
Without wanting to start a fresh love/hate debate regards the movie I'm going to mention it to make a point. The PG13/12A rating of it made me cautious about taking my eldest to see it, so I showed him the trailers beforehand which he liked, so we went to watch it together and he wasn't scared at all. I know different things scare different people, and some kids are scared of the movie turtles, but at least the certificate gives parents a guide. Many of you adults on here have described this episode as dark, creepy, scary and the stuff of nightmares, so they should of had a warning on this at least. I've had other parents ask me whether the movie is suitable for kids, but none of them would think to ask me if the cartoon was, and in my opinion this episode isn't, not for young kids anyway. From now on I'm going to have to vet each episode before watching it with my turtle-mad sons, which seems insane.
Ok, riled up mummy rant over, "cleansing breathes" and all that ;) I will try and give my personal but unemotional view now...
I'm not too bothered about the direction they're going in. The nod to horror in the first episode of the season made me smile, but I've got a bit bored of it already. It doesn't really feel like TMNT to me at the minute. I'm just about used to Leo's new voice now, I never disliked it and figured it was just a matter of time. I'm getting impatient to see how NY is fairing - are Kraang in control of the city? Where would that leave Shredder? And how is Splinter coping alone not knowing of his sons' fate? The Mikey/ICK scene was adorable, but I was disappointed to see Donnie still desperately trying to impress April.
:teek::lol: If that's what she needs... Raph has my blessing. "Stop it! [SLAP] Just stop it!"
"RAPH!"
"Raph! Not cool, bro!"
"Whoaaaa..."
"Raph! What is your problem?? You KNOW the writers need this thing - what ever the heck it is - to last for at least another two seasons."
Haha, this would make me dislike Nick April less and love Raph more - win win!

Well, to be fair, I don't know how it is over in the UK, but over here, the series is rated Y7. Which means the show may not be appropriate for kids under 7, like yours are.

I didn't let my kids see this one, they are still mad at me.
After reading the tittle I decided to watch it alone first then decide if they could watch. So glad I did! I'm a little bored with the horror theme myself and am feeling impatient for the taking back the new York stuff. But I know from the video from ny comic con that there is good stuff to come so I'm pumped also.

I like the nod to the original live action movie. Seth green is really just using his owm voice so it's pretty distracting. A pity Dominic catrombe wasn't kept on as he waa doing a great job I thought. Greens voice is way too different.

That's interesting to know, I wasn't aware of that at all, will bear it in mind. I still think they went too far with this one, can't imagine my son going from traumatised to being fine with it in a matter of months. I'm just hoping this level of freaky horror is a one off even though the show has been taking on a much darker tone since the back end of season 2.

Yeah, some of these eps might be too scary for kids. I know when my BF and I saw Parasitica together, his sister's kids were over, and we wouldn't let them watch it because we figured it would scare them. They kept asking to come in and watch, but we said, "No, you can't watch this one. It's scary." So I think you just have to go with your own discretion and see if the kids will find it scary or not.

It's also hard for me to rate this for kids, because the kids I know that like to watch TMNT, two little girls aged 9 and 11, also love to watch The Walking Dead. It's tradition in our family to start watching adult/scary stuff at a very young age. I've been watching horror movies, slasher flicks, R-Rated action and scifi since I could barely walk, right along with my cousins who are about the same age.

Plus most of my older brothers were into heavy metal bands like Megadeath, Metallica and others, so dark themes and skulls were pretty much a huge part of my childhood.
I think children get scared by horror when they see the adults acting differently around it, trying to keep them from seeing it and being uneasy around it themselves. I think with you and me the adults didn't act like horror was a big deal, so we never learned to be afraid of it. Likely if there was something we did find scary, it was explained by an adult and we stopped being scared of it.

My family is the same way. Idk, my mom likes horror movies, so I sat in on more than a few and they never scarred me for life or anything. I was that kid who watched Stephen King's It during it's two premiere nights on ABC at age seven, so I guess my family handles horror flicks very similarly. My little six year old cousin is the same way. She likes Turtles and was more fascinated with than afraid of the creature from this episode. All she does after shows like this is ask a multitude of questions pertaining to the monster's motives, among other things. She won't stop asking about Splinter, Leatherhead, Timothy, and the rest of the New Yorkers though. lol She's very interested in "Mr. Shredder" and bugs me every week. Yeah, like I know when we'll see him again. I need to ask her why she keeps referring to Shredder as Mr.

Those were shown a lot on TV, likely because they were single movies and not a two parter like It was.
That is cool that your niece thinks about the characters in TMNT like that, it shows a perceptiveness that you don't always see in that age. This makes me wonder if the TMNT producers shouldn't strive to add more layers to the bad guys' characters, since there are clearly many people interested in them beyond just being foes to the Turtles.

Hilarious thing. The only movie that scared the sh!t out of me when I was little was when I went to see The Gremlins. Once they came out of the pool, that was it, we had to leave. I would be 6. Junk like that just didn't scare me because I knew it wasn't real and just a piece of fiction, especially cartoons.
I think all parents should try to teach that at a young age. Two years old, I was watching the "new" Thriller video. No fears at all because my parents showed me the Making of Thriller first, so I learned young not to believe the junk you see on TV unless it says, "This is based on a true story".
But....like your folks, mine didn't let me watch anything with adult situations and followed the rating system for movies. TV...well, seems shows aimed at adults came on past 9:00 pm anyway, and I had a bed time back when I was that young. I had to go to bed at like 8:30 in Elementary School. 9:00 in Middle School and 10:00 or 11:00 in High school. lol

Yeah, that's probably the larger reason mine followed it, not so much a gory reason as today. Heaven forbid an R rated film not find a reason to have a woman undressed and probably shown topless. These days of course some people will go, "boobs, so?" but different times back then and family opinions.
I don't think there was really any movies that ever scared me much at all. I grew up completely loving Halloween (yay tomorrow!) so anything the spookier the better.

And another filler episode...yeah...
Overall, this episode was interesting, until it had turned into the Thing tribute / rip-off.
I really hope that Northhampton arc will be over soon and Turtles return to the city and more interesting stories, rather than mediocre fillers.
Leo's voice sounds much better and closer to his voice in previous seasons.
I give this episode 1 Kraang out of 3.

But it's not really a filler as we find out that April's mom was cloned and was going to be used to take April to the Kraang. That's a big revelation right there. I do believe she's alive somewhere and that they'll eventually find her.

Well, going by the titles of the next few episodes, apparently Northampton is going to serve no purpose other than a whole bunch of filler, which isn't fair. We need character development, not random things in the woods. The last few episodes have had AT LEAST minimal character development. Kinda annoyed right now, especially after that note we left on in the Season 2 finale.

I do believe she's alive somewhere and that they'll eventually find her.Yeah I agree with this entirely. Within the Woods helped Leo gain some confidence in himself and Donnie learned not to come on too strongly in the Bigfoot ep. Those are "character" eps.
As for this particular one, I do feel that the information gained in this ep will play a role later on, so I can't view it as filler. Anything that involves the Kraang really can't be considered filler, can it? The Kraang are the main villains after all. Shredder is secondary, only with a personal vendetta.
I also feel that this ep is just what Donnie needed too. Remember, they have to get back to New York undetected somehow and they will need a replacement for the Shellraiser. When I first saw this episode, the first thing that popped into mind was that Donnie just may use that old abandoned Kraang ship or parts from it to create the new Turtle Blimp so that they can get back into New York without alerting the Kraang. Even though that ship was abandoned, it's still curious how it didn't give off any alerts to the Kraang.

In case of this series a lot of developments are quickly forgotten or brushed aside, so, sadly, I am not sure if this revelation will be important or not.
If they'd somehow lampshaded, that April's mom is still alive somewhere...that would have been really important. As of now, it's just another part of April's backstory, which I am afraid will be quickly forgotten.
BubblyShell22

Maybe, maybe not. But I don't consider it filler considering we got some back story on the Kraang and how they were under the farmhouse for all of those years and how they were awakened. Had April's great-grandfather not encountered them, they'd still be asleep.
IndigoErth
11-04-2014, 12:55 PM
Personally I'll mostly leave the "filler" label for only those that did not have any elements in the storyline that contributed to anything outside of a single episode, even if minor.
This one definitely brought in the revelation that April's family has been involved for longer than previously known and Kraang backstory, what caused them to flee that home and when, the hope that maybe her mom is alive somewhere.
Likewise the Bigfoot one, while not adding much did advance Donnie's perspective on his romantic interest and...whatever April was trying to accomplish there.
Conversely you've got true fillers such as my fave Mazes & Mutants which added nothing if Malachi does not make another appearance. In comparison Buried Secrets added a lot.

11-04-2014, 01:02 PM
I hate ascribing "filler" on any show that's not a 1:1 adaptation usually. Like for example, most anime are based directly on a manga but throw in multiple episodes that aren't based on stories in the book. But with something like Turtles... nothing is really filler. Just because something doesn't connect to the larger storyline(s) aren't filler. That's be like calling a day in your life where you just went to the mall and ate a giant pretzel filler because it didn't advance your career or education.

Once that happens there (hopefully) shouldn't be too many MOTW episodes, and we can get right to the good stuff.

That's be like calling a day in your life where you just went to the mall and ate a giant pretzel filler because it didn't advance your career or education.
Unfortunately though as an analogy that's also a very American (as well as some other countries) way of thinking for many. However, maybe that's a good part of what's behind the attitude against so-called fillers. "Didn't progress? Oh well then time was wasted, shame on you."
Personally I'm all for filler days.

Well, I consider that fillers are episodes that do not advance the plot or change status quo.
And since I don't believe much in quality writing in this series, I have little reason to believe that events of this episode will be somehow important in the future.
Of course, I will be glad to be mistaken.

I am not from America, but I would have considered such day to be a total useless and unneeded waste of time, even if I enjoyed it.
But I don't see problems with wasting time like this.

Found the episode on youtube so checked it out.
Loved the fact there was some Raph and April interaction for once and to a lesser extent, a nice little Leo and April moment.
It was nice to see Casey's more sensitive side and how he tried to comfort April and all (but then I'm a die-hard Casey/April supporter, have been since the first movie).
Wasn't keen on the Thing references (not a big horror movie fan), I was more tickled pink by the Karate Kid reference, :tgrin:

When the characters found out about the mom clone, though he was the last turtle standing so to speak...

Hey, I'll take what I can get when it comes to her interacting with the other three turtles, ^_~

Yeah, it was nice to see Raph, April, and Casey fighting the clone for sure. It was cool.

I loved Raph's "Mom...thing" line for some reason. It's the way he said it that cracked me up.

I know, and I thought it was sweet when Leo called her Mom too.

At work today (on my break) I was talking to two of my work collegues and we were talking about TMNT and I mentioned this show and showed them this episode (on my phone) and they were shocked on what they saw and couldn't believe it was a kids show.

Yess  And perfectly named it, too.

*nod* Between calling her "mom," and movie version being the first ever as far as I know to use "dad" for Splinter... Leo, right in the heart, buddy, right in the heart...

When Leonardo was cleaning the window, he was repeating, "Window cleaner on, window cleaner off." That's a send-up to "Wax on, wax off" from The Karate Kid.
I'm assuming that's what you were referring to?

Mikey says that "wax on, wax off" thing in SotO, and Raph stops him by saying "mouth off". I'm assuming the Leo scene was a homage to that homage.

Yes, and it was well done, too. I laughed when he did that.

Haha, that sounds hilarious. I haven't see the movie, but I may look that part up for a laugh.

It is a good scene. You should watch the original films with your kids as they get older, I think they'd enjoy them.

Loved the episode and all the creepy thing references. I can't really think how kids could find this creepy instead of amusing after playing GTA or stuff like that...
