How do you feel about the NM version of Shredder and the others? Personally it feels like Shredder was made into a joke. He gets beaten in the second episode and reduced to a crazy hobo in a later one.

Dragon Lord is okay, but he reminds me of Lord Dregg for some reason.

Everything was cheesy is that Tv show. Shredder looked like a bad cosplay and Dragon Lord had a good design but the costume sucks.

yet he looked good on paper...

I loved them all. Shredder was pretty bad though, but he didn't have that big of a part. Dragon lord was awesome looking. Loved Silver I think he can be a prominent villain in any iteration. Simon bonesteel was great, the vampires were great, Dr. quease was basically their version of baxter stockman and I enjoyed him as well. Really good villains. Most people just hate on it to fit in. :trolleye:

they were cheesy (not always a bad thing) and mostly bad but a few had their good points... Bonesteel was an idiot but had some funny one liners... dragon lord was good from what i remember and the Rank filled the shoes of the foot well enough... the rest i remember not liking big aspects of them or are unmemorable...

for the record i didn't mind a lot of aspects of the next mutation and as a whole like the show so no i am not just hating.

It's rare we agree, but on this, you & I are a unified front. Conceptually, the villains are dope. Execution might be shoddy on some, but there's so much potential.

Outside of Bonesteel, they were all subpar. The Dragon Lord and his Minions were lame stand-ins for The Shredder and The Foot. Dr. Quease was a discount Baxter Stockman. As for Va-MI and Silver, they felt completely out of place in a Ninja Turtles show.

The NM villains was interesting and have great potential. I wouldn't mind for them to return, either in IDW or the new cartoon.

Moderately enjoyable if taken as being purposely hokey.

I liked all the villains just fine. NM, if redone with a better budget and more serious tone, would have worked just fine (obvs the Venus thing would've needed to have been tweaked as well, but nonetheless).

The villains themselves have great promise in the right hands, and I felt that doing an episode where Shredder has lost everything and struggles to find redemption was a very interesting concept. We're used to Shredder being portrayed as strong, never faltering and 100% focused on conquering his enemies. By the same token, a story about a defeated and disgraced Samurai warlord has a lot to offer, in the right hands. It's a story where you could explore not just Saki, but also whether the Hamato clan could forgive and overcome their own prejudices towards their most bitter enemy - whether they would choose peace, if the opportunity were presented, and break the cycle... or if they'd be unable to move past it.

It's a story about whether both sides could give up their vendetta. I think you've got all you need right there for a really good Turtles story.

I loved Bonesteel, mostly because of Scott McNeil's portrayal of the character, the same with Simon Webb's Dr Quease, they where wasted on the show IMO, Vam-Mi would make a really good villain in a more serious version of the show, she had the potential of being a really dangerous threat to the boys. The rest I could live without, Shredder is a joke, more so then the FW version, and Dragon Lord is what he is, a Power Rangers villain. Silver is... well, something...

Yeah, memes, good contribution. It shouldn't come as a surprise that there are people on a forum dedicated to being obsessed with the TMNT who enjoy The Next Mutation. It'd be great if at least one thread could NOT devolve into bullsh*t like this.

Ahem!! Anyways, the Dragons were clearly tougher than the Foot but like all other recurring villains, they got old fast. Vam-mi was cool. :)

I loved Next Mutation. Just like I love the first season of Power Rangers, Virtual Reality Troopers, Big Bad Beetle Borgs or Superhuman Samuria Syber-Squad. They may be cheesy but its a good cheesy IMO

As for the OP Ill have to watch the series again. I just got them on dvd and havent seen them since they originally aired way back when.

I think if the cartoon had been continued into an 11th season and these characters had been used there instead, the writing team would've been able to do some really interesting stuff with them.

I have to agree. I always saw Dragon Lord as a replacement for Dregg too. I think had it been in the original cartoon Dragon Lord and his dragons would have been much cooler.

I maintain that one day, the Next Mutation universe will be revived. And it will be awesome.

I mean, if the entire thing had been done as a cartoon like, in the 2003 style, I think it would've copped so much less crap.

I thought Dragon Lord was pretty cool looking, and the costume wasn't that bad. At least his face was articulated, and they didn't go down the Power Rangers rout, i.e. rigid face compensated for by hyper-kinetic gesticulation.

The rest were pretty colourful and interesting, although I though Vam Mi was out of place stylistically, but not problematically so.

Dragon Lord and the rank had so much potential (Dragon Lord himself even made into into Mirage's image run). Simon Bonesteel is a comedic take on the bounty hunter trope. (In my personal fiction, I always make him part of a trio of bounty hunters, along with Dirk savage and Tiger Claw). Vam mi and Silver have a lot of potential, and just need the right kind of story to work.

Sometimes people let thier hatred of Venus seep over into other elements of the show.

I believe that they all had potential, but suffered from bad writing, badass decay, and/or cheesy plots.

Did it seem out of character for Splinter to be buddy buddy with Shredder near the end of the series? I haven't seen the episode in a while, but I remember Splinter letting Shredder live with them in the sewer.

Btw, isn't Next Mutation Shredder technically 1990 movie Shredder? I assume NM is a "what if" story where Shredder from Secret of the Ooze survived his battle at the dock?

It's been awhile, but I remember how Venus used her shinobi magic on Shredder/Saki in the second episode, making him see what he had become. So this was Saki without any evil, until that item came along and he became greedy again.

This Splinter has gone senile with age, seriously, watch the series again guys, he's always laughing at everything with this creepy laugh, talks to himself all the time (and often laughs at his own jokes afterwards) and goes to the surface without any worry to play chess in the midle of a park, he sometimes even goes outside during the day. Poor thing should be put in a old folks home, especially because his sons don't pay him any attention anymore, at least he would get some company.

It also bothers me how girly his movements are, damn girl, you're playing a male, can't you try and move a little more manly? Oh well, at least she's hot :P

Funny you mention Splinter going senile. I saw this funny parody on you tube, it's hilarious lol.

I notice they changed the intro and its music for Kabillion. What are the chances of Saban continuing the series? Pretty slim? I wonder if Scott McNeil would be too old to be play Bonesteel if they were to bring back the show?

Okay, Go Komodo does predate Dragonskull by about a year, though I still see the two as two versions of the same character (insomuch as utrom ch'rell and human oroku Saki are two versions of the same character).

I find Wick a little over the top personality wise (or maybe it was just that his voice was a little grating, I'm not sure) but I always liked his design, to say the least. & I thought it was kinda fitting that Dragonlord would have a pet/sidekick/minion.

Panda_Kahn_fan
12-18-2014, 12:40 PM
Fine, they're officially separate villains. Go Komodo's half-brother was more Komodo dragon mutant than actual Dragon anyway. But having two Dragon Lords around at the same time seems silly anyway.

If the 'Dragon Lord' concept were ever reintroduced though, I'd have Go Komodo be the leader of a worldwide spanning Dragon-Worshipping cult, whom the turtles have to stop from opening a portal to let Dragonskull and his rank army (with dragons like Wick, Draco, and maybe even a new version of Shoate as a Dragon in it) back into the world. Dragon Skull rewards Komodo and the cultists, of course, by simply killing them.

Either that, or Komodo and his cult actually want to BE dragons, and inject themselves with a mixture of Komodo Dragon DNA and mutagen to become the Rank. This could be a way to reuse the two separate concepts.

TNM has some of the best TMNT villains, they were definitely not used very well in the show but even there they showed so much potential. I need to see some of these high tier characters again.

Silver? A mobster gorilla? ****ing Awesome. Dr. Quease? Baxter Stockman but will do anything for science not really a villain and not really a good guy either. Bonesteel? A batsh-t insane bounty hunter? Yes please. The Rank? lizard grunts? great!

I didn't really care for Vaami though, she was just a generic vampire.

keep him as far away from that garbage as possible! I'm fine with them being on their own island with TNM. He is awesome but I don't want him anywhere near Nick. They're already ruining bebop and rocksteady for me. I take it for what it is but need to stop bringing these beloved characters in there and trashin em.

everyone has their things that they like and that's fine. Doesn't mean they should be put together.

I'd seriously like to see some of them return.

Dragon Lord as one of the mythological figures in IDW's TMNT would really do it for me in some silly way.

Even Vam Mi and Bonesteel are salvageable in terms of representing archetypical villains that don't have a locked-in character the Turtles' world (Marlin and Bonesteel only slightly overlapping in the hunter role, which is a villain archetype that makes perfect sense with the Turtles).
