View Full Version : Should the series end at season 5?

With all the money TMNT has been making for Nick, it wouldn't be a surprise if show ends up running for 10+ seasons like Spongbob has but Ciro himself said he doesn't know where to go with the series after season five, sure the quality may not begin to decline right away with the sixth season but eventually if the series goes on too long episodes will become uninspiring when they run out of ideas or they'll jumping the shark and put us in another Red Sky/Fast Forward situation.

If Ciro doesn't know where to take it after season 5 then he's not trying hard enough. There's still loads of material to pull from. Also, as long as they keep on bringing in good new writers with fresh ideas, it could go on for quite a while but yes, it could get stale.

I hope not. There's so much to do with this series! Go read some comics, Nick, then get back to us! Man, if this series begins to suck I will be so sad.

I doubt it, There is so much stuff in the comics that the show can take from.

Not to mention fan works. There are lots of genuinely good ones out there.
I mean, lots of content and design language of the 2012 series came from Ciro's own "fan work" right?

I don't think that's likely. There's so much that still needs to be resolved. And given the leisurely pace of the show, it will be a while before they wrap it up.

Considering that they wrapped up the whole Kraang thing, which lasted two and a half season, in about two episodes I'm pretty sure they could wrap everything up in season 4 if they wanted to.

Anyone who thinks the show won't make at least 7 seasons and 150+ episodes is kidding themselves.
The 4kids series didn't even have a fraction of the ratings the Nick cartoon does and it managed to go on for 7 years with 156 episodes AND a movie. I'm also pretty sure toy sales are also better now than they were in the 4kids era.

I don't think that's likely. There's so much that still needs to be resolved. And given the leisurely pace of the show, it will be a while before they wrap it up.Which they could easily do in just one or two episodes, of which they have done at times. They got rid of the Kraang, so I'm thinking Season 3's finale will be full demutation of Karai and possibly a vision quest for her if they want to show her mother. Season 4's mid season might be Dark Raph (since Shredder no longer has Karai) with Season 4 finale will be the final ending of Shredder and his henchmen, with episodes before that showing the various de-mutations of allied/neutral mutated humans and dangerous animals (along with going back to the farmhouse one last time to deal with Creep and Turducken.)
The biggest clue is that there has been no announcement for Season 5, especially as we had news for 3 and 4 at least one-two seasons prior. Plus this show's original target audience (7 year olds) will be turning 11 years old when Season 4 runs, so unless they plan on doing darker and edgier to try and keep them going at 12 and 13, they might just wrap it up then and then start a new show in about 2 years.
While the show may have better ratings it's also on a channel that expects better ratings than say 4Kids. Also TMNT was more of a pet project for 4Kids to offer something superhero related and subsidized by licensing deals (which is also true for Nick).
But yeah the show will also continue whether Ciro wants to or not, they'll just hire another guy, you can argue if that's good or bad but that's how things are. It's all up to what Nick wants they don't care about the storylines, they'll cancel the show with cliffhangers without second thoughts or renew the show even if all things have been resolved.
I'm also pretty sure toy sales are also better now than they were in the 4kids era.
do you have toy sales data? If not it's just rampant speculation.

Why would they wrap up this show just to start a different TMNT show in 2 years? That makes no sense at all.

I have to agree with CyberCubed. Basing the target audience at 7 years old because it's Y7 means nothing. I have 5 nieces and nephews between the ages of 4-10 who enjoy the ninja turtles. If you're gonna talk about the children as an audience, I'll be honest with you, they kinda don't care what goes on in the show. They watch it for fun and out of order because they're kids and have short attention spans.

It seems a possibility that Nick could do what Harry Potter did and grow the characters up along with their target demographic. We know already that the Turtles have experienced a similar passage of time to the seasons themselves (several mentions of 'last couple of years' or 'last year', etc, etc) The Turtles are presumably growing up on screen, so it could easily be done. The show could then move onto late teenage/young adult Turtles, keeping just ahead of its demographic target.
As for how to do that, more complex and darker storylines seem a good idea, coupled with more 'grown up' themes like a stronger focus on prejudice, responsibility, risks of excess, relationships (romantic or otherwise) etc, etc. Its certainly doable, but I can see what Ciro means if the show were to be expected to keep its characters capped at a certain age range (and the show capped at a specific young demographic). There is only so much you can sensibly do without scraping the barrel.
I guess it could be possible to run 2 shows concurrently (with the 'older' Turtles show aimed at young teenagers and a fresh show aimed at the original younger kids demographic), but as its primarily to drive toy sales, they might have to broaden their marketing a bit to keep the appeal for an older audience (computer games/card games maybe? - At least they have the movie tie in potential)
As for ideas how to continue, I think it largely depends where the show ends up at the end of Ciro's planned story arc. There are certainly villains that can replace Shredder as the primary threat - and would work with older demographics, but I suspect anyone watching the show throughout would probably start to accuse it of 'jumping the shark' once Shredder is vanquished.
Maybe what Ciro should do is request Nick do a 'successor series' that follows the original Nicktoon characters but further down the line (1 year in show hiatus from the end of season 5 maybe?) Let Nick maintain a newly rebooted young kids show, but in the meantime do maybe 4-6 episode mini series maintaining Nicktoons continuity and playing with other villains and concepts like HAVOK, Armaggon or Old Hob?

So long as the team continues to put their own new content alongside that of Archie & Mirage, they could go on forever with a fairly consistent quality.

No, Turtles, you're not allowed to leave me... esp not that soon. :trazz: Only if you pick up another TMNT series a little while later, like a spin off that freshens it up and continues with older characters.
Just keep browsing through all the content inspiration. Be innovative and offer fans a way to submit decent ideas/thoughts (not necessarily full fanfic however...) to toss onto the table in the brain storming room. (Of course with the agreement that they relinquish rights to the idea and their name will not be included - however they will still have bragging rights among other fans that they "came up with that.")

I have a feeling the fourth season will be the last.
However, a fifth season would be just fine. I don't know about more.
They're are shows that can go on for a long time, but I don't think this one will. Playmates' toys quality has dropped, the story is kind of being rushed, and it's like kids have no clue when this show is on.
I'm not sure what's going on, but Nick is probably done with this adaptation. Since the majority of material they have is downright ridiculous, they don't care anymore. They want to make sure, however, that the show ends with a bang and a long lasting impact.
Now, think about this. Batman: The Animated Series didn't have that many seasons, but it is called a classic cartoon today. 2k3 TMNT might have had seven seasons, but be honest. Not many liked Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers.
To me, it's not about quantity. It's about quality. If the TMNT has 4 or 5 seasons, all that matters is if the stories make an impact. If there are more seasons (let's say 7), it could end up being like the worst two seasons of the show (like Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers). Do we want that again? Think about Heroes. There were four seasons of that show, but most fans liked the first season. By the writer's strike, the series went downhill, and nobody cared. Hopefully, they can fix things with Heroes Reborn.
I'd say whenever it ends, it ends. However, it should NOT end with a cliffhanger. Nobody should be unprepared for cancelation.

Actually, there is a lot of truth in that. Better to end on a high note than linger and fall - for those of us that remember it, you need look no further than Babylon 5 as a good example.
4 Seasons effectively finished and wrapped up the entire show and it was comfortably a classic. Then it was given an unexpected extra season and a spin off. Those extra seasons were an utter joke and basically ruined the legacy of the show.
Actually, an interesting thought; If the show was cancelled (either season 4,5 or even just pulled unexpectedly), what would the Nicktoons legacy be for the Turtles franchise? What would it be remembered for leaving a lasting influence, and what do you think would just quietly be swept under the rug in future iterations?

Been meaning to jump on this threat, but I think you've made a pretty good case.
This isn't the 90's anymore; we shouldn't be expecting a cartoon to limp on to 10 seasons. Shorter is potentially better, if a writing team's ultimate vision can be satisfied.
I would argue that the 2003 cartoon was only able to successfully produce 4 seasons to stick to its original vision, and I'll even give way to the majority of you who liked Season 5. But Seasons 6 and 7 were simply reinventing the franchise with flashy colors and poor planning to try to eke out more toy sales. It was not rebranding the franchise successfully as Batman TAS did with its final season (new character designs, new art style, same progression of story and character).
For Nick to successfully end its cartoon run, Karai must be reunited with the Hamato clan and April's parentage must be resolved. And honestly, d***ing around in Northampton with a bunch of standalone stories for the first half of Season 3 was not well thought out from the standpoint of progressing the overall story.
And like you said, DO NOT GET CAUGHT WITH YOUR PANTS DOWN if you get cancelled. For the love of all that is holy, that is the worst thing a show can do...

You people do not understand the way business works. Nick didn't spend $60 million just to buy the franchise, (and another $50 million ontop of that to produce the episodes) to just run a cartoon for 4 years and call it quits. It was a long-term investment.
The show is no way going to end after 4-5 years. The movie franchise is still in theaters and there will be a cartoon on the air the same time. Nick TMNT's ratings and toysales are fine.
Its hard to believe a bunch of disgruntled 20-30 year olds on online forums have no idea how real-life business works. This isn't fanfiction where the creator can pull a plug at any moment, its BUSINESS.

Personally, I think the lasting legacy of the Nick cartoon is thus:
Positives:
Karai as Hamato Yoshi's biological daughter
Giving needed dimension to Leonardo's personality (before the show forgot he was a nerd and insecure in being a leader)
Fishface, Rahzar/Dogpound, and Tiger Claw
Negatives:
Donatello's massive crush on April
Teenage April and Casey
Neutrals:
The Kraang (Utroms) as a malevolent race operating in secret to enslave/undermine humanity

I'm not going to bother rereading every post in this thread, but from what I've seen, we're not arguing that the show WILL end soon, but that it might be best (from an artistic integrity POV) if the show DID end soon, rather than drag on and limp along to a slow, ignoble, forgotten death. Kinda like previous takes on the franchise.
But no, Nick is definitely going for the massive ROI. Toys (cheap though they may be), cartoons (with definite highs and lows), and movies (ruined by Michael Bay) will continue for as long as Nick can make it.
And as long as I keep getting kickass amazing comics from IDW, I'm fine with it.

Fred Wolf series lasted for 10 seasons
The 2k3 series lasted for 7 seasons
With so much stuff in all previous incarnations, such as the comics, movies, video games, and so on, This show could last for more then 10 seasons.

Whilst I completely agree with you that its highly unlikely Nick 'will' pull the show after the proposed 5 seasons (assuming nothing dramatically changes between now and then of course), that wasn't the question posed by the thread.
To misquote Goldblum; 'They are so concerned with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to consider whether or not they should!'
I guess its possible we might have a middle road option, and a new series is commissioned further down the line to reboot it again. Perhaps bringing it more in line with anything the movies have set up.

Well no, not everyone is business minded, some people wrap their mind around "how business works" better than others, people have different traits and what they're good and bad at.
Giving needed dimension to Leonardo's personality (before the show forgot he was a nerd and insecure in being a leader)
I miss that side (and glad it showed up for a second in one of the recent episodes), though rather than the show forgetting, I've taken it more as character development and recent events having forced him to grow up and become more serious.
How would they do that? If you're implying something like Teen Titans Go that in no way will bring in the same money.
Well, 2D would surely be cheaper for one, though I think a new unrelated series would probably be more likely. (Though I'd prefer a continuation, even if they turn it 2D.) Suppose it's not out of the question they could jump ship and do a 2D series for the 2014 Turtles... (But they better use a decent looking art style - I've seen some nice looking fan made stuff, there's potential in 2D maybe.)

It'll be a sad day in my household when this show ends! I'm the major turtle geek in my house, but my kids (and now my wife) are all turtles fans. Not only is this show one of my favorite cartoons, but it is also one of my favorite shows period. Nick isn't anywhere as moronic as Marvel or Cartoon Network are with their shows. The movie franchise will already have its second movie out by the time we're in Season 4-5 so it'll likely be too late by then.
Even IDW doesn't want anything to do with the movie hence no movie-based comics.
There are many ways this show could be cancelled while still having TMNT on tv.
They could but as I've said above there would be no point. If the show gets canceled I expect them to just air it in reruns for a few years without anything new for a long time if ever.
I certainly don't expect Nick to start up a whole new cartoon in a new continuity right after the Nick one ends. This isn't Batman or the way Marvel treats their shows.

Your wants and opinions have no bearing on what Nick will do with this franchise.

no offence but I don't think you understand how real-life business works, it's all about profit and often the short term profit. They will continue the show/movies as long as its profitable, if they make their $60 million investment back they'll be happy if not they won't, it doesn't matter how much they spent they won't continue something that is generating fewer and fewer returns, that's how big businesses work, it doesn't have to be making money or breaking even, it has to be making a lot of money. Now I don't think they'll be cancelling the show but the moment its no longer profitable they won't be afraid to cancel everything and putting it in the vault in perpetuity. And yeah they could cancel the current show to make a new one in 2 years, WB does it all the time with Scooby-Doo and Batman and other franchises like Transformers also get rebooted all the time, it's nothing new. Like you've posted many times in the past after 5 years the little kids who watched the show are now teenagers and no longer the target audience so why not reboot it for the new generation?
As much as this show doesn't has dissapointed me I do wish it gets plenty of seasons and see where it goes since it's not terrible. I think the deciding factor for this would be great toysales, ratings and the box office of the movies. If two of those are not great you can kiss TMNT good bye and all three are likely to falter. Playmates is continuing the trend of ******ness which killed the 2k3 line and took the TV show down with it. The movie did alright but didn't do Transformers numbers, if the next movie keeps declining then it might not even reach a third movie and ratings could be a big factor since kids today lose interest much quicker than before. My only hope is that Viacom doesn't shelf the franchise for too long of a time when this current "wave" of TMNT is over.

The show is already targeting an older age group if you base it on the age rating of the DVDs. The season 2 boxset released on 30 March in the UK is rated 12. I don't know what the rating is in the US but they can't go much darker than what they're currently doing if this is the age rating.

Korra was always planned to be a short series and end like Avatar did. The only difference is they aired the last season online because ratings were low. Which makes sense, Korra felt like it was aimed at adults rather than kids. Not to suprising kids didn't get into the show.
With TMNT the only problem is the constant rerun breaks. Other than the rerun hiatus how are they treated it badly?

Yes, exactly. Leo has still matured, but he still has his geeky side, which we saw in "Battle for New York" and I liked that a lot. It shows that even if you do change, you can still stay the same in some aspects, and I love the growth they've given him and how he'll continue to grow throughout the series.
As for how long I want it to last, I say as long as they can be consistent and make good stories, it can last as long as they want it to. We know Ciro said he had planned for five seasons, so if it goes that long, great. If not, then I'm sure he has a way to end it in four if the show isn't picked up for another one. And there is talk about a spin-off show, so there's definitely going to be that as well. It all depends on what Nick wants to do.
And, Cubed, there are two ways the show has been treated badly: 1. The constant breaks and 2. Lack of marketing on Nickelodeon itself. I have yet to see a TMNT commercial on Nickelodeon, and that is sad to say the least.

As long as the stories continue to be incredible, I'd be up for however many seasons they'll throw at us. Until we hear otherwise, I'd certainly like to think we're in for more than 5 seasons. I'm jumping the gun since we don't even know if there will be a fifth season, but I'm an optimal optimist.

& that is what makes this Leo so damn good. I'd put him right next to Mirage's.
Leo is ichiban turtle.

I'm not going to bother rereading every post in this thread, but from what I've seen, we're not arguing that the show WILL end soon, but that it might be best (from an artistic integrity POV) if the show DID end soon, rather than drag on and limp along to a slow, ignoble, forgotten death. Kinda like previous takes on the franchise.Exactly. Simpsons, SpongeBob, Family Guy and Futurama all or were franchises that kept on going or getting resurrected long after they should have ended, characters becoming gross parodies of themselves and at times literally becoming gross (Spongebob.) While Cubed says that Nick won't give up the franchise after paying X amount of money for it, he forgets that they also have the power to milk it to death and run it into the ground if they so pleased, another thing business sometimes do because of 'profits.'
But no, Nick is definitely going for the massive ROI. Toys (cheap though they may be), cartoons (with definite highs and lows), and movies (ruined by Michael Bay) will continue for as long as Nick can make it.
And as long as I keep getting kickass amazing comics from IDW, I'm fine with it.Yeah, they won't give up the franchise itself. More then likely they will just do new iterations after this show ends, and make successive profits from their ongoing 'fresh' versions.
