View Full Version : So, why only male mutants?

Is there some kind of stigma against female mutants, or maybe a mandate stating that they only want male mutants added to the show?
Seriously, the odds of just males being mutated is very unlikely. In most areas there usually tebd to be more females than males and yet the only female mutants we've seen are Ice Cream Kitty and the mutant lizard pin-up, which may or may not exist.
I'm not looking for love interests or such, but I'm just curious why they seem absent. Does Nick not allow females to be mutated for some odd reason?
IDW Comics seem to have a better representation with Alopex, Koya, and Sally, though it's still mostly one sided, but at least there are some.

Not Nick's fault originally. The majority of the OT toyline was male mutants as well.

I wondered that too. I would almost consider April to be a mutant, and she could be either a mutant or a hybrid character. I guess the only female mutant we have at the current moment is Karai.

Not to be the devil advocate but there was also dr. Cluckingsworth, the parasitic wasp, and the mom thing.
It only feels this way because we haven't had many talking female mutants yet.
Personally I don't want to have female mutants just fill a quota but I also don't want a type a story that specifically requires a female mutant because that type thinking will often leads to tropes and stereotype.
Guys we been down this road before so I'll just say this: make good characters that will bring interesting plots and ideas.
For something serious and action oriented give her motivations that can either clash with the turtles for conflict or have her motivations be relatable enough for them to want to help her as allies or because they happen to share the same goals. Or you can have a crazy fun character like Renet to create a zany pizza face like situations. It not how many you have, it's about how you use them in the context of the show.

I take back my snarky question.
The above is an important point.
No girl mutants.
No more girls on the show at all.
This will either get rid of the romantic subplots, which I'm in favor of.
Or make all attempts at romance involving same sex attraction, which I am also in favor of.
No girl mutants.
No girls at all.

Oh my god, Ninja Turtles is "Magical Girls" for boys.
I thought that was Dragon Ball Z?
Very possibly? Cartoon producers. For whatever outmoded reason they often refuse to make shows that appeal to more than one strict demographic. They want to make toys for boys and they want to appeal 100% to that market, instead of trying to expand it. To the point where many shows, like Young Justice for example, are cancelled because they attract a more diverse audience or "too many" girl viewers (http://io9.com/paul-dini-superhero-cartoon-execs-dont-want-largely-f-1483758317).
I hope that changes. I love the show, but April's very inconsistently written, Karai's largely been stripped of her agency, and Irma never really existed. The series could use some better representation, and a few girl/woman mutant villains would be a nice addition.

both boy and girls shows (speaking from western productions only) tend to be one sided, girl shows especially is guilty of this.
For example, Monster High's boys are either: "Hurr durr stupid boy (Heath/Clawd) or "just a boy toy" (Deuce or any of the million of boyfriends Frankie had) or "stupid romance problems" (uggh...Gil). the only guy on the show that doesn't make me pull my hair is Slow Mo, and he is just a typical zombie.
The only boy characters in girl's shows that aren't that bad are:
Ken (Barbie's life in the dreamhouse - this show is way too damn good for it's own good) he has the slightly mad scientist/slightly barbie obsessed.
Alistair (Ever After High) this mainly comes from the fact that he hasn't been treated badly yet, but so far has shown that he has some form of competence.

She more like the girl of the good guys side while Karai is suppose to be the girl among the bad guys or at least that how Ciro thinks of them anyway, which kind of piss me off because just when Karai start evolving the show like "Nope! Sorry, we can't have you suddenly be a three dimensional character, sweetie."
Well there shows out that doesn't feel the need to cater to a gender demographic or fill a good girl and bad girl quota. Gravity Falls is one of many best examples. Even though protagonists have love interests or desires to pursue romance, the show treats the romance aspect as part of growing up and even let them move on from it, without killing off the love interest.
With any other group of writers, the love interest will have to always remain the same and along with zero thought of going past it like a stupid sitcom.
I hope with more shows like Gravity Falls, this idea for girls only and boys only will slowly go away and give freedom to creators in making shows that they want to make.
Besides Kids themselves don't really care about the toy unless the toy resemble their favorite character . If you only put work in the toy line and neglect the show then no one will care to buy the toy in the first place. It doesn't matter how good the toy is if the show itself is god awful.
It's like putting the cart before the horse.

Pssh.
* Girls aren't allowed to be awesome, esp not without being objects.
* Creators of media can't understand making awesome women without sexualizing them.
* Boobs equals they have to be shown, equals inappropriate for children; people with boobs are not appropriate.
* Mother evil/abandonment themes preferred.
* Girls are somehow too powerful; explanation needed however.
* Too many girls and it becomes poison to male psyche and they instinctively flee in terror then avoid making the needed doctor's appointment to ensure masculinity hasn't taken any permanent damage. Unable to return to the show it must be immediately canceled.
* I am being sarcastic.
But really, even if not regular characters there should at least be one or two that we at least know of. Giving the impression that no women came into contact with the scattered mutagen is kinda lame.
We can pat ourselves on the back to make it feel better and say that no, us women are simply quick enough to dodge it, but really, unless we're in a cartoon where falling things whistle or people always watch everywhere they step, it's bound to happen to some women, too.
If they want inspiration for an awesome female character... I'm not even familiar with the game she's from, only from images I've seen online, but Rubi Malone is the kind of character I'd want to frigging BE. Take someone like her for an adult female character and make her a mutant (or not, lord knows the adult human women are lacking as well)... awesome.

It's the reality of any show/toy line with a specific gender target audience. Style guides that specify no female characters on merchandise unless it's the whole group (justice league). TV advertising for a wave of Monster High that only shows the male doll of the assortment in a wide shot.

and now without Renamon, digimon would be 97% Bara Yaoi (Though technically the line is only relevant to the Tamers-verse)

That's one of the biggest lies in the toy industry. Female figures are often the hardest to find and the most sought after. That logic is beyond outdated. Some companies are slowly rectifying this by adding more and more diverse female chacters.
Of course that logic was ridiculous in the past as well. There were always Dukes, Snake Eyes and other male Joes on the shelves back in the day. I could never find Lady Jay or Scarlets.

I never really noticed too much. However, thinking back on all the humans that have been mutated in the course of the show, it's scientifically understandable on some level that they are guys if you think about male characteristics/stereotypes. Pulverizer became a mutant because he was trying to become a super hero, Spider Bytze was the aggressive, nosy, rude male who gets what's coming to him, and we traditionally don't think of garbage collectors as being female. There's a reason the average male lifespan is statistically shorter than that of a female's- they tend to put themselves in situations where they might be injured or killed, and in this case they're being mutated in place of either of those things.
Not saying that that can't or shouldn't change, but I do find it interesting.

I'm not talking about being pressure to play with dolls. I mean how some little girls would sometimes feel pressured by others to have boyfriends, to wear make up or try do other things that would make them seem older.
Of course it could them trying emulate their designated role models.

True there definitely seems to be more pressure on girls to grow up too fast.
Related but off topic where thread is concerned:
Reminds me when I saw some quick clips I think on the Disney channel of kids reacting to some boy band or other male singer(s) in and outside of a concert, or something like that. Some of the girls shown acting all crazy were rather young, I'm going to say around 6 or 7 at the youngest.
Firstly, I find it sad they are being encouraged to act like that. Secondly, in my day that sort of interest didn't really even start up until at least about age 10 or 11. Before that age I could not really have given less of a crap, nor any other girls I knew. Now we've got these young ones encouraged to act all crazy.
In addition to that... I was shocked when I realized the large clothing store I was working at had little tiny bras in the young girl's department. If they were just the regular simple little cloth ones for the fun of it (and some were), or a little more adult-like bras for chunky girls who needed it early, I could fully understand that. But I'm talking about TINY little adult-style bras with the foam cups, albeit a light cup, for girls that won't even have a cup size for a while still. (I swear some brands may have been under wire, but it's been a while since I worked there.) There was a time when these things were an adolescent milestone you were embarrassed but proud to hit. Now, well.. now we can have 6-year-olds in bras that in their case could be considered padded. :ohwell:
