View Full Version : Is Nick Mikey really the dumbest of all Mikeys?

I've seen some people here saying it but i don't get it, Doesn't every incarnation of Michelangelo(minus Mirage i think) have the distinctive trait of being the laid back "party dude" of the group who serves as the main source of comic relieve, What makes 2k12 Mikey an idiot compared to the other versions of the character?

Yes but he's also lethal and dangerous. He tried to kill Bradford with his kusarigama to the head, and also tried to kill Pizzaface via a burning furnace. :tlove:
At least he's not as annoying as 2k3 Mikey.

He is arguably the least experienced version as you recall Leo is learning to be a leader and they are supposed to mature as the episodes pass. The dumbest version would be 2003's Mike because Peter Laird forced him to carry the sole weight of the humor.

I don't really equate humor or being the most laid back one with his intelligence. It's more like Nick Mikey is the least emotionally mature compared to the other versions. i mean, they are playing this set like actual teens, so youth makes some of it forgivable, but this Mikey can indeed be pretty unthinking. I don't know if he's dumb per se, but this version is often very quick to automatically do something without any thought. In a fight, that might be great for instinctual response when he's trained for those situations, but outside it... just ends up making him look a little foolish or dimwitted at times, and when it matters I can see how it might even make him be perceived as a potential liability if his brothers can't always trust what he might do. He might not really be a liability, but that's just more stress on them if they have to be on guard for what he's doing.
I do hope they will mature him up a little and become a little more better at being focused when he needs to be. Other versions are a bit out there, but they generally knew when they needed to shut their mouths and focus more.

Yes. He's borderline autistic in the nick show.

Yes, yes he is.
To suggest 2k3 Mike is the dumbest is the dumbest comparison between the two versions of the character.
Nick Mike is the kooky cliche of today's humor in children's cartoons.
2k3 Mike cracked jokes and such but did not border on being an immature, childish moron.

It really makes you appreciate how laid back the original toon Mikey was. He just had a pizza obsession, but other than that he never did anything as ridiculous as the other two.

Oh gawds, YES! Nick Mikey IS the dumbest, even more so than the 2007 movie version. OT Mikey was laid back and obsessed with pizza, but he still had plenty of brains. Even 2k3 Mikey was pretty savvy at times, even if he came off like a goofball and a jerk at times.

I don't think he is dumb. The Nick toon has done something that no TMNT incarnation before it has managed to do successfully - make the turtles seem young, and a young version of Mikey is just... a tad infantile. Yes, Mikey is always laid back and fun-loving, but that doesn't mean "dumb". He is just young and perhaps less logical that say Donnie or Leo, but not "dumb".
I know some people don't like how Nick Mikey is slightly infantile, but personally I find him so sweet and endearing.

I have to say yes, Nickelodeon's Mikey just seems lobotomized. To me Michelangelo's always been known as the laid-back party dude and joker who can sometimes be clumsy but never annoyingly so.
Nickelodeon's Mikey is just forcefully stupid and relies on "lol randumb" outbursts in an attempt to be comical. In Serpent Hunt he sees some of Karai's scales on the floor, thinks they're crisps and eats them. And that's just one example of his cringe moments. When he's not being stupid, he's being gross and weird.

Nick Mikey might have the lowest intellect off the various incarnations, but I still prefer that Mikey miles miles above 4kids Mikey, he was really insufferable and usually unfunny.

I don't know much about 4Kids Mikey, but, I wouldn't say Nick Mikey is dumb...but as others pointed out, this is the first incarnation, probably, where all four seem to act like actual teenagers.
In the beginning, I felt Mikey was literally "dumb" for the Nick version, but as I continued watching, I kinda changed my mind. It just seems his character has trouble concentrating...which doesn't actually mean "dumb" and he seems to just act on instinct instead of thinking things through fully. Like someone else said, for fighting or when in battle, this is actually a good thing...outside of it, he comes across as looking foolish.
So, is this the dumbest Mike? Probably not, but he is most definitely, probably one of the least mature of them.

Pretty much the reason why Mikey feels so damn out of character and just so damn stupid was because he's not Mikey he's Beast Boy from the Titans cartoons. The second Ciro Nieli and Greg Cipes were announced for this show I knew Mikey was completely ****ed they were going to crank the levels of annoying and stupid ten fold just like what happened in the Titans cartoon and they did. Sure 2K3 was guilty of this at times but no where near the levels the Nick show takes it.
Beast Boy sucks he just sucks and yes I'm calling him Beast Boy he doesn't have the right to have the name Michelangelo, Mikey or hell even the misspellings. Hell its more fitting because they don't write Mikey they write Beast Boy. This was cemented as fact for me after watching the Pizza Face episode the fact that they can easily take a Beast Boy episode from Teen Titans and just retool it to a solo Mikey episode just pretty much killed any chance of ever truly seeing the real Mikey again in this show. Michelangelo has always been my favorite Turtle in all incarnations except this one and its probably the main reason why I just stopped watching the show.

I remember Fish Face calling him the dumbest of all the turtles to which Mikey replied "Hey! I'm smart! I'm just a party dude!" xD
I don't think he's necessarily dumb, but does dumb things and makes dumb decisions sometimes, but he's really more impulsive than dumb. He can be naïve sometimes, too. The OT one was a laid back party dude, more obsessed with pizza than any of the other turtles. 03 Mikey was alright. He could be annoying but sometimes could be funny, but he was more hyperactive really. This version isn't too bad. His trusting attitude can be funny sometimes. xD

Not much more to add to this conversation but...
Nick turtles do a decent job of making the turtles seem young. Not sure if their age has ever been said but I'd firmly put them in the range of 13-14. Mikey's behavior isn't really that far off from how a kid that age would behave.

I have to say the Nick Version is the first incarnation of Michelangelo which i find annoying. The OT one was awesome, i liked his attitude overall, he was not so much over the top as Michelangelo in the new cartoon.
Out of all incarnations Nick Michelangelo is the worst interpretation of this character imo.

Yes he is. Plain an simple. One of my biggest gripes about the nick show.
He's just soooo f'n stupid. There's really no words to justify how idiotic this character is. He's just so feeble minded, that is almost makes you question the strength of intelligence of the writers themselves.
And no, just to clarify i am in no way calling anyone mentally challenged cause that is no joke or way to speak of anybody. There are a few classless fellows around here, who need not be named that are known for making light of mental disabilities. But i have too much respect and integrity to do so.

I don't think Nick has made him unintelligent, but they have certainly made him childish, inexperienced, and really naive.
I find him more endearing than Mike in 2k3, who is playing up the Annoying Little Brother, and less obnoxious than his portrayal from the FW toon.
Just think how much worse things would be if not for Ciro's "Mike Test."

Since I only experienced the portrayal of Nick Mikey, I can't comment much. However, I do find Nick Mikey annoying and just plain crude. He almost always has to do something stupid within each episode, without contributing to the plot. It gets old rather quickly. I wish it would just stop, because I know he can be so much more than that. He is not just a "comic relief" archetype.

He does provide comic relief in almost every incarnation, but I agree that he does more than just that. The reason I think the OT Mikey is the best because he was just a party dude, easy going and liked to socialize and was obsessed with pizza even more so than his brothers. Not to mention he was optimistic and often cheered up his brothers when they were down. The other versions of Mikey are alright, but I feel like sometimes they go out of their way to be annoying and idiotic.

For me, OT was ONE of the "best" incarnations, but the one I originally fell in love with as my favorite was the original movie Mikey. He wasn't dumb or obnoxious at all, he was easygoing , fun-loving, and funny without feeling forced or having to resort to crude, dumb humor. I WISH Nick's version could be more like that.

I felt at first that he was too loud and way too infantile to be taken seriously. Now it's way worse. I've seen Mikey in 4kids and I don't know what's worse. I think 4kids Mikey is at least strong and a good fighter. Nick Mikey makes far too many mistakes all for the sake of comical humor. They really need to tone that down a lot. We did get Savage Mikey a few times though.
Marvel is right though, they did a good job with 90 movie Mikey. As far as I'm concerned, IDW Mikey is my favorite. He isn't stupid and he fights hard. He takes things seriously when appropriate, but he does lean toward the sensitive side more than other incarnations.

OT and Movie Mikey are my favorites because they are funny, laid back but still competent fighters and capable of thinking up plans and getting out of trouble on their own. They both also show a degree of sensitivity and compassion for others that makes them relatable.
2k3 I rank a bit lower but I can still enjoy him. He has some good relationships laid out between him and his brothers and the way he interacts with children and animals is beautiful. I was also quite fond of his interactions with Zog.
While I don't want to call Nick Mikey stupid, I do find him to be a very one-dimensional version. He seems like all he is revolves around crude humor and I just don't find that to be an engaging character. There is much more to Mike than that and the fact that the Nick writers don't recognize this is quite sad. In the hands of good writers, Mike could be an excellent character but it doesn't look like Nick has that at the moment. I hope that can change.

I think we need to bring back smart-ass comedy back. Someone who's funny because they're funny, not because they're dumb and 'whoa ho ho, they're dumb and there's the joke'. Ironically in the OT RAPH was the funny one... but because of his snappy comebacks and wisecracks, not because he was dumb.If they insist on making Mikey comedy relief and nothing else... they should try the sarcastic route.

Yeah, Nick Mikey is undeniably the dumbest one in the franchise. Although there have been plenty of episodes where he's made me laugh, I can see how a lot of his stupid antics can get old and annoying with the fans really quick. I agree that a lot of the comic relief he provides feels forced to the point that it's not even funny anymore.

Here's my take on the genesis of Michelangelo:
Original Mirage/Image - Witty, laid back, creative, sensitive
Fred Wolf Cartoon - party animal, little bit distracted
Archie Comics (post issue #4) - see Mirage
New Line Movies - mix of Mirage and Fred Wolf
Next Mutation - airhead
4Kids Cartoon - @$$hole
Warner Bros. CGI Film - stoner
Nickelodeon Cartoon - mentally impaired

Not sure. Back in them days, there were two types of boys. The mature ones, that were either shy, and afraid to talk to you, or the ones with confidence and would try to impress you with their skills (be it throwing the perfect touchdown or solving the complicated math quiz) Then, there were the immature brats. The ones that liked you, but didn't really know how to go about telling you, so instead, would do stupid stuff to you like pranks or even be mean to you. Mikey just might be the kind of guy to go the latter route.

It's a banner I made a while back for my site. The artwork is from issue #45 of Archie's TMNT Adventures. I photo-shopped my teenage self in place of Ninjara, which now that I think of it is pretty ironic since I ship Raphael and Mona Lisa!

^I dunno, Mikey in 2k3 could be quite the ass. Funny as he could get, the whole part where they were sneaking through the sewers, following Splinter, and he tells them to "follow me, walk this way!" and Mikey thought he would be cute by mimicking Splinter's elderly walk, but was met up with Donnie reaching for his bo and smashing Mikey on top of the head in annoyance.

Smartass, yes, but flat-out ass? Not really. He was never intentionally mean or rude, and he did have a lot of compassion and concern for others. He just came off a bit thoughtless or careless at times when he spoke. Like when he says he smells something like burnt hair when they are at the farm, and Splinter gives him a glare, and he suddenly realizes what he just said. He wasn't trying to be rude or douche-y, it just came out that way.

Pretty much this.
We have to remember that virtually all TV shows and movies are written by adults, most of whom either cannot remember what it was really like to be a child or who are actively trying to repress all memories thereof, so portrayals of kids and teens on screen are often seen through some very warped lenses.
I agree that the current Nick 'toon is doing a better job than anyone ever has before of showing them as teenagers. They do sometimes go a little overboard with Mikey's goofy side, but at least it's not the full-on moron caricature who does nothing but scream 'WHOOOAAAA!' or 'Let's get OUTTA here!' we ghet in most other current 'toons, even those 'Instant Classics' (.....) from Disney Pixar Worldwide Inc. Do any of you actually hang out with teenagers in real life?
People keep saying the Turtles in the Nick show are the first and only ones to act like teenagers. THEY DON'T. They act like they're 10-12, not 14-15. I think it's actually the people who keep stressing this point about Nick "finally getting it right" who are the most out of touch. The Turtles are skewed VERY young in this interpretation.
I do agree that in most cases they're also skewed older. They're always more believable as 17-19 rather than 14-15, but that could also be explained as, they had to mature very fast because of their circumstances and lifestyle. But none of the guys act older than 13 on the high end on the Nick show. Mikey's f*ckin' 10.
There are plenty of teens who act similar to the way the Turtles act in the OT, 2K3, and the movies, even if they're a little mature. Nick on the other hand should be called "Tweenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", as they're generally WAY too young/immature for how old they're supposed to be.

I don't believe so. He's silly, gullible, and a bit of a space cadet. However, many young kids are. It's all things that will mature over age and isn't really a sign of his intelligence. They've already had instances on the show where you can tell that if Michelangelo applied himself and focused, he could be very smart. 2K3 Mikey on the other hand was an outright village idiot.

And how many teens of 15 and up have you ever encountered that were like that? Seriously. Because I WORK with teens EVERY DAY. And they are NOT like that AT ALL. Gullible? Maybe in the freakin' 50's, but NOW?! Not a chance in Shell. Kids today are smart, sneaky, conniving and street-wise in ways even our generation would be awed by. Goofy? maybe in the "let's blow up the science lab" or "let's steal all the panties from the girls' locker room" kind of way, but MOST teens would be WAAAY beyond juvenile crap like water balloons and whoopee cushions. That's 8-yr-old crap.

Uh- no. He's not. He's closer to an 8-yr-old on a sugar rush. Actually, no, scratch that. I've known 8-yr-olds who were MORE mature than that. Heck I raised two cousins (both boys!) from 8/9 to 11/12, and guess what? They were NOTHING LIKE THAT. Smarter, more mature, and more savvy than Nick's Mikey is supposed to be a 15.
As for the "ages" of the various versions, PD's Mikey (and to a lesser degree, the OT one) is actually a LOT like most of the teen guys I'm around EVERY SINGLE DAY. Video-game obsessed, stoner, party-animal, snarky pervs, the lot of them. some of them make those versions of Mikey look almost saintly in comparison!

OT Mikey was based on Spicoli. Spicoli was apparently a high school senior, which would most likely make him 17-18. Possibly 19, as I have no problem believing he was held back at LEAST once. Either way, OT Mikey is essentially Spicoli, so he may be an analogue for an OLDER teenager, but a teenager nonetheless. Also keep in mind that Spicoli in Fast Times actually WAS based on a real person.
But yeah, Nick Mikey ruins the whole deal about them being authentic teens. He is NOT a teenager unless he has a serious developmental disorder. The others maybe 13 or 14. Not Mikey.

Nick toon Mikey's a heck of a lot closer to a real teenager than Fred Wolf post-Hippie stoner post-grad toga party wanna-be 'surfer' Mikey.
Or 4kids 30-something CW supernatural soap stud Mikey.
Or Platinum Dunes' sexually frustrated video gamer Shrek-Mikey.
So you've not only never met any teenagers, but you've never been one? Must have been weird for your mother, birthing a fully grown senior citizen.

Now while I liked a lot of the other Mikey's, I think it's important to know that while all of them are similar yet different, the OT Mikey was the ONLY one who didn't go out of his way to be annoying. I think a lot of the other Mikey's can be funny, but I personally think all of them except for the OT Mikey, had their annoying moments. Some were more annoying than others though but OT Mikey didn't try to act annoying or bother others. He just chilled out a lot of the time, partied whenever he could, was optimistic and had a never ending appetite for pizza. He never bugged the other Turtles or acted perverted or really acted childish like the other Mikeys. That's why he's the best Mikey in my opinion.

Nick Mikey is funny, but many times he is annoying and disgusting. You all know, his eating habits and very immature. I want him to be more like IDW Mikey: still naive, but more mature and with a big heart. I want to see Nick Mikey to be what the real Mikey is: the heart and soul of the team. In the Invasion episode I saw a small glimpse of IDW Mikey in Nick Mikey: When he was comforting Raph. It's time to see Mikey grow up.

Yes Nick Mikey is by far the stupidest Mikey.
4kids Mikey isn't that bad, I went back to watch the episodes and he's actually pretty cool....until he won the battle nexus.......but he later learned to be humble about it....kinda.
Can't Mikey be laidback and funny without being stupid?

Yes, he can. It's called OT Mikey.

Hm, I kinda disagree with this. Despite what most think about Nick Mikey, being purposely mean wouldn't be one of them. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, unless slashing Vision Quest's Rahzar's neck or trying to stab Bradford in the head counts. :-P *still feels Nick Mikey has a dark side*
Out of the four, Mikey to me seems the most confident of them and doesn't seem to care what others think of him. He's like a free-spirit and very comfortable in his skin...or shell rather. Ironically, I'm looking forward to the Renet stuff (mainly because of the time traveling element and potential). I just couldn't see him reacting in the way Leo did with Karai or Donnie with April. In other words, I couldn't see him changing his personality and stuff or acting stereotypical, like you proposed. So yeah, Mikey with a crush has me highly curious, but I still hope that they don't do one for Raph. I like how he plays the straight man...er...turtle role. He's like the sarcastic Abbott to Leo, Donnie, and Mikey's Costello, imo.
Yes, he can. It's called OT Mikey.Movies 1-3 Mikey too...or maybe movie 1. "Ninja kick the damn rabbit!" :tlol:

Sorry, just wanted to bring that up. :)
Anyways, the original toon and the movies (minus 3 and PD) captured the party dude perfectly. He was light-hearted, cool-witted, laid back, and just an overall fun guy you want. Perfect for the young demographic. :)
However, I don't think Mikey is dumb in the Nick show, but his characterization is one of the more off putting things in the series. Sometimes he's hilarious (The Olympics!), sometimes he's a bada** (Dimension X episodes), sometimes he's perfect for emotion (The Invasion and Leatherhead come to mind), but he has his fair share of stupidity. Due to him lacking substantial growth like Raphael in the show, Michelangelo always flips from likable to just untolerable.
I'd like Mikey to mature more, he can still be a goofball but has a lot of potential to grow. It almost went well following the Invasion, but the Croaking screwed him up.
I don't get why we have to dumb him down in the incarnations, he can be serious and funny. He's arguably the weakest character yet due to his age (and the fact he acts like Beast Boy from Teen Titans due to having Greg Cipes as the va), but it leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes, Nick Mikey may be portrayed as a "young teen for the first time" but that does not help anything by the fact that he is considered the weakest link of the team. His brothers to this day still treat him with the lowest amount of respect. At this point, they should be trusting him but he still manages to do things that are either to make him look like a screw-up (setting off alarms) or just plain unsafe (mixing Don's retro-mutagen with another formula, which worked out of sheer dumb luck). Mikey being "adorable", "having a big heart", and "seeing the good in others" is just grasping straws.

Maybe he's stuck in this mode to ensure that he comes off as "the baby brother" for some reason? Does his voice actor mainly only do young, ditzy sorts of characters? (Not really familiar with his work outside of this.)
Or maybe they keep him emotionally young for the purpose of pulling in some amount of young viewers with the Turtle that seems emotionally closer to their level and fun/funny....

Definitely all three. He was allowed to really shine in three, in fact!

Yup to all this. I would add movie 3, though. He was actually at his best, there, IMHO.

Exactly. 2007 Mikey had him act a bit slow, but Nick's Mikey just dumbed him down even further, to the point that he simply can't be taken seriously AT ALL.
