View Full Version : What did you like about TMNT (2014)?

I'm sure it's been covered in other posts but what, if anything, did you like about the 2014 film? What aspects would you want them to retain for the second film? I know people have issues with Shredder looking like he's 'part transformer' as I've seen it put, but for the most part I liked the portrayal of his character.

Bay backed off from making the Turtles aliens. I liked that. :tlol:

Fictner's line delivery and the texture work on the cgi models off the Turtles
(not the color work, and not the models themselves just the textures)

I guess also the actors who played the Turtles, but sadly they got nothing to work off on. And even Noel Fisher learned to use the nunchaku, but it was never used.

Really liked Shredder's armor. People only compare it to transformers because of Bay. It was bound to be over the top in an action orientated tmnt. Transformer faces were inspired by samurai masks anyway.

Also liked the turtles being April's childhood pets. I liked that everyone's origin connected.

I really Love the actors who play the turtles. They were Perfect,
I liked Splinter fighting like a boss
I liked Shredder fighting his foot and kick there Butts with his hand tied behind his back.
I liked shredder speaking Japanese
I actually like the way the turtles looked i like how there personalities shown through how they dress.
I loved every bit of action in the movie Donnie bow flip, Mikeys nunchakus
I loved their lair really felt lived in and there own.

At one point, it ended.

:tgrin:

Aah... Noel Fisher was pretty good? I mean, aside from the script he had to work with, and that version of Mikey was a total creeper, but there was a lot of potential in his performance.

Minae Noji could have made a great Karai, but the movie made her a glorified extra, sadly.

Great post!

- Fichtner, Fichtner, Fichtner.. this guy never disappoints in his roles.
- The Turtles' personalities and interactions with eachother
- The flashback to the Turtles in their youth
- CGI throughout the film was pretty solid
- The humor
- Stuck to who the Turtles were at their core--Donny, tech guy.. Mikey-Silly, etc
- The inclusions of core characters: April, Splinter, Shredder, TMNT (of course) and even Vernon was a nice touch

-The Turtles themselves, although I'd still take Pete over Knoxville.
-The fight scenes were spectacular because I could actually SEE what was going on, unlike the Transformers movies.
-The CGI was great.
-The acting honestly wasn't that bad. Hell, even Megan Fox gave her best performance (THAT'S NOT SAYING MUCH, THOUGH.)
-It was vague on where the mutagen came from so it could be used as a plot device for the sequel.

Favorite parts of the film itself...

* Elevator, of course.
* When they're all hovering over April after she's passed out. (And the "Omg what do we do?? We're not even supposed to be out of the house!" that could be going through their heads. :tlol:)
* Love the adrenail rush, esp when the three of them are like "We gotta help Raph!" and go falling splat to the lower floor. Heh.
* My fave shots of ol' blue boy. Pretty unanimously these models aren't too appealing, but he's still got it when he wants to.
* That shot of Raph just chillin' in the back of the van and his snarly "Cowabunga." And when he startles Vern in the van of course.
* I do like that the couple times Raph was in Leo's face, Leo stood his ground but never raised a hand, even when shoved. While these film makers/writers seem to only have (or bothered to have) a very basic understanding of the characters, Leo's reaction in those moments was great. (And perhaps credit should heavily go to Pete for the physical performance. ;))

The more I watch the film, the more I see things I like and dislike. But what has occurred to me lately, is that I honestly think they tried. Just maybe the wrong people tried. Those invested and those who produced and wrote the script seemed to care enough to try. I don't think anybody went into this hoping to half a** it, but I think many ideas were misdirected and made without fans involved. It was made to appeal to a casual viewing audience, and from that perspective it did its job. When we get a producer who is so savagely invested in the source-material, then we will get a movie we can all love. Until then we can sharpen our teeth on what is made for production companies to turn a profit.

You make a very valid point. The turtles are themselves and they (except Mike of course) all don't act like four Mikeys. There are two biggest problems I have with this movie. The first being the story; and again, I think this goes back to the whole blue script rumor and Eric Sachs being Shredder controversies. Hollywood is a stupid business but truthfully not even them would pull something THAT idiotic to keep people away from the movie; turtles being aliens, Raph and Mike having radically different personalities. Even for them, that would be insane. Because of this, I feel that some of these aspects led to so many bad cuts and plothole confusion that led this movie into a mess. The second is the tone; with how the turtles looked, a part of me looked at it through another view. Maybe they wanted to tell a dark gritty version like the Mirage novels only completely different, ala The Dark Knight. If this movie had a sense of direction, who knows how it could have ended up but that's also what's so frusturating about it.....what would this movie had been and what could it have been?!

I never had a problem with how they looked. But then, I think Superman wearing red briefs over his blue uniform is stupid, so apparently, my opinions don't matter. :tlol:

Having read the Blue Door script, Raph and Mikey never had swapped personalities. All four Turtles had accurate personalities... oh God, I'm actually defending the Blue Door script. But trust me, that's, like, the ONLY thing it got right.

I accept it for what it is. It's like a bad, cheesy, b-movie with some fun parts. I didn't like the plot much.

Fichtner was great and should have played Shredder. Sure, he's not Japanese, but if we can have a cartoon where April is a teenager, why can't we have a movie where Fichtner is the Shredder. He was much better than the dull hunk of wood we got instead.

Didn't mind Megan Fox, just wish that there was less focus on her character.

The actors playing the turtles definitely did their homework.

Splinter/Shredder fight. Would have been better if they had some sort of history, but the fight was still good.

Raph/Shredder fight was good. Just wish it had more context to the story and it was confusing why Shredder just walked away.

Turtles/Shredder fight. Felt like I was watching someone play a video game but still enjoyable

Snow chase is one of my favorite sequences. I also liked Splinter taunting the turtles with pizza. Vernon was pretty good. Elevator scene, of course. I liked seeing the turtles as children, just didn't like the ninjitsu book aspect.

Shredder falling off building shot was one of the best falling shots I've ever seen. Certainly better than Walker's lame falling shot in TMNT 3

All in all, I don't think it's as bad as most people do. Yeah, it's not good, but there are parts I enjoy watching.

if we can have a cartoon where April is a teenager, why can't we have a movie where a white guy is the Shredder?

Because The Shredder is Japanese. It's a fundamental part of his character. April's age, is not.

Absolutely. The designs of all the turtles, in my opinion, seemed to point towards maybe a grittier form. Maybe that's my mistake and they wanted to just make them appear more life-like but it just makes me think what could have been.

Because The Shredder is Japanese. It's a fundamental part of his character. April's age, is not.

I agree in most cases. However, the new movie had no Japanese tie-in plot. No Hamato Yoshi/ Saki backstory, etc. So, the fact that Shredder was Japanese was not a fundamental part of his character. In that movie, Eric Sacks would have been better because at least he was an interesting character, instead of the shoehorned in, dull, scarecrow, who speaks Japanese occasionally that we got instead. He had no logical plan, no focus on his character, and no backstory whatsoever. He was in the movie for no other reason than the fact that people complained about white Shredder. So, it made no difference that he was Japanese.

If they had tried to tell a story that was a little closer to the true origin, I agree that Shredder should have been Japanese. However, in the story they were trying to tell, all of the Japanese elements seemed forced and unnecessary.

I agree with all the statements. I'm not defending their direction or saying that they should have gone with their story over what we know. I'm just saying that in the version that they were trying to make, it would have been better if they had just kept Fichtner as the Shredder. Obviously, I would have preferred the original story with Yoshi/Saki etc. but if they wanted to change things (especially backstory) it could have worked with a decent angle and script. The same way teenage April works, or the Hamato Yoshi turned Splinter works, or the way that the IDW comic origin works. I'm fine with a different reimagining as long as it's good.

Exactly. The Shredder & Splinter characters have been tweaked or reimagined more than once. But anyone who knows what they're doing keeps the Saki/Yoshi rivalry in place, because that is the foundation of the entire story. You need that. Take that out and they're effectively different characters, and that negatively impacts everything that follows.

That's why, when people who like the movie complain that fans "don't like change", that argument rings so hollow. This property has had a lot of variations over the years. And most of us posting here are fans of most of them - or even all of them. If someone like me can enjoy the Mirage comics, the '87, 2003, and 2012 cartoons, the Archie and IDW comics, and (most of) the original movies on their own merits, yet absolutely hate this movie... maybe that's not because I'm too closed-minded for "something new". Maybe that's because the movie just got it completely wrong.

I think it's even worse than that, honestly... Uhura's ethnic culture was never a huge part of her character in TOS. But Saki's culture completely shapes his reason for existence; his antagonism towards Yoshi, Splinter, and the Turtles... everything.

I'd say it'd be closer to making Worf human.

Eric Sachs was a somewhat interesting character and I'd like to see him again somewhere. The TMNT haven't really had much in the way of enemy corporate executives, and the way he played the Foot Clan as weapons for his cause was nice.

What ever happened to the "That's what your father and I were trying to do, create heroes" angle from the teaser? That might have been interesting.

The problem with the movie is not that they changed things, it's why. In the 1989 Batman movie, they changed the Joker's origin. In that movie, though, the change worked because it created an interesting dynamic between the characters. In TMNT 2014, the changes they made didn't make the story any more interesting. There was no reason to write out Yoshi, Saki, or change Splinter's backstory. Especially since they didn't replace it with anything equally creative or interesting. Then to try and change it back at the last minute after everything had been shot, just made the movie confusing and bland.

All they had to do was read through the Technodrome forums and they would have had all the info they needed to make the perfect TMNT film.

I've wondered, too.

Their mutation would at least have made more sense that way if done on purpose and not via use of the same stuff - unaltered even - that somehow otherwise is expected to act as a "cure" after poisoning people. *confused*

Pretty sure it was cut out as part of the reverse-whitewashing last-second-Saki operation Platinum Dunes half-assed and slapped together. Rather than try to create new scenes and dialogue that would have made sense and fit the overall narrative, Bay and Liebesman just cut out stuff and added in, like, two throwaway lines of braindead reasoning. "Stupid rich" and "cure disease with mutation-causing ooze."

- Raphael´s dorky smile in the car at the end
- their voices
- partly the story (not the entire thing!, but the "we created heroes" thing is well thought, I think ;))
- Their lair looks great! Upcycling to the max :D
- the snow chase scene, elevator, Splinters Punishment :D
- how the brothers work together

I donno, maybe it's two fold like in IDW, ooze heals and mutagen mutates, but the movie forgot to explain it, or something.

Or, the ooze mutates animals but heals humans, hence why Shredder suddenly looks completely different and younger in TMNT2.

It's like they didn't even think that part out. At all. Sacks just takes the mutagen back from giant mutant, human-like Turtles, while presumably never being tested for any use as a "cure," figures his plan is 'a go' once more, with no lab work required, and runs off intent to kill and partially save the city with stuff he has no clue if it will even work.

If their idea is that it doesn't mutate humans... I find it painful to accept humans as magic "other" beings that are unaffected by the mutation aspect. (If it specifically makes non-humans humanoid , and huge, at the very least the population of NYC should in theory become a bunch of Hulks.) At best, I don't think it would have been hard to state that there was human DNA involved in the mutagen and because of it this happened to the Turtles and Splinter as an unintended and unexpected side effect. (Because WHY would the mutations have ever been intended when you're just researching a cure for your evil plan anyhow?)

But wait... wait... it was also a "cure" for Splinter who was never drained of his. You have some, but you're possibly going to die... but here, have some more, it will save you. It's like a drunk drinking more to make it "better." Or at this point it's a bit like Alice in Wonderland Megan in Turtleland; one bite/sip injection makes you humanoid, two cures you of... something. Meanwhile three of the Turtles have lost theirs, or much of it, but nah, don't worry about it, they're fine.

It will be a smart move if the second film presumably uses a different mutagen since it will have to have a different mutating affect on B&R. (Unless they were to go with the human DNA route with the first - finally stated in the second - and suggest the Turtles are hybrids so they took that knowledge and applied DNA of other species for use on humans.)

Add this stuff to the things I like, I guess. Not that these specific things were done, what with the sense they lacked, but rather the amount of content that throws away all reason and can provide interesting thought and discussion. I'm not even ranting or "attacking" it or anything like that, it's just fun to dissect the thing.

The original storyline was that the mutagen would be used on his "Foot Soldiers" in an attempt to supe them up & give them special strength healing abilities. That goes hand in hand with using it as a cure. Only thing is, one aspect of that story was cut, & the other wasn't. :tlol:

& lest anyone call BS I have concept art of failed mutated Foot Soldiers as well as a shot of April/Vern in the facility where the men are being experimented on, clearly from a scene that was cut. I'm not gonna bother posting them unless someone requests it, though. I'm lazy.

Forgotten that's been mentioned in the past, good point. (I do recall just recently seeing a short piece of video of people laying on stretchers, is that it?)

supe them up & give them special strength healing abilities.

But on that note, why didn't four little Sliders turn into something more akin to bulletproof galapagos rather than turning almost human? lol

Probably, yeah. I think there's a demo reel or something with a brief clip of it, so that's likely it. As for tryna find logic in that script, wouldn't it be easier to prove God's existence or cure AIDS? :tlol:

If by "give it" you mean The Finger. That whole scene was probably THE corniest goddamn thing I've ever seen. I'm seriously dumbfounded how anyone actually found that enjoyable. Then again, with this fanbase, little if anything shocks me anymore.

Yep, that's a room full of unremarkable mutants in the making. A pretty big scene to cut if you think about it.

Leo's dorky "Well, miss... we're ninjas" (nods with fists clenched together)

Splinter freaking out when he found out the boys went above. Power tail attack moves.

April attacking Shredder and delivering the final kick. :D :tlove:

Turtle van scene, where Raph sheepishly smiled at April.

So then you're saying the trailer was worth $10 or more, 'cause the one shot of her backside, & that elevator scene, are in it. I saw the trailer a whole bunch of times, for free.

Personal gripe with all movies is that the Turtles themselves never defeat Shredder. So far the only cartoon version is the OT and Don in SAINW.

For real! I swear it has to be one of the first rules in storytelling that says, "Don't make your main character(s) really wimpy and helpless when finally faced with someone of equal skill, to the point of needing to be rescued by a member of the supporting cast." Because then it's like, whose movie IS this anyway?

In the old movie, it at least kinda made sense, because the entire story began with Saki and Splinter and ended with them, but it still kind of sucks in a movie called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (unspoken subtitle, in parentheses, "...Get Their Asses Kicked By The Only Guy They Were Ever Really Interested In Fighting In The First Place, And Have To Be Rescued By A Decrepit, Hunchbacked Rat"). But at least it had some logic to it.

Like everything else in the new movie, April being the one to take down Shredder had NO purpose, except to put an exclamation point on the fact that it was in fact, "The April Movie." But yeah, the Turtles do have a history of not doing very well in Movie Boss Fights. Pretty crummy if you ask me. It always makes them look like they can only beat up flunkies. Sigh.

Y'know who else has a sh*tty fight record despite being the main character? Lion-O from the original Thundercats. Every episode, I swear... "Help me, Thundercats!" You never saw He-Man pullin' that sh*t.

Even more embarrassing when you think that in every Turtles movie the supporting cast always defeat the villain.

TMNT 1990- Splinter

TMNT SOTO- Kills himself

TMNT III- Killed by Wic (Casey's ancestor)

TMNT 2007- Casey and April crash the Cowabunga Carl van into the main villains.

Turtles forever- Bebop and Rocksteady plug the laser back in

TMNT 2014 April kicks a Katana into Shredder

Man the movie Turtles track record is a bit sad don'tcha think?

:ohwell: In that case, if these Bay movies do anything good for them, it could at least let them have the victory for once. I don't care if they have to aim one at an older audience in order to do it because of the weapons use in the defeat, it would be welcome.

I love you guys! Don't ever change! And OT, I will add that one thing that disappointed me while seeing it the first time is along the same lines as the fact that the turtles didn't defeat him- it was the lack of Mikey saying "Can we keep her?" after April faints. He has ALWAYS done this in just about every version on first encountering her (90 film, OT series, 03 series) only Nick and now the PD movie dropped this tradition. It was something I had sort of been expecting, and was disappointed that it didn't happen, even while they were trying to decide what to do with her! However, I DID like- no LOVE- the scene with them as babies!

Best part: Megan Fox is still HOT!
Worst part: Whoopi Goldberg....words fail me.....
The rest was entertaining as a generic sci-fi action romp very, very, VERY loosely based on the Ninja Turtles.
