View Full Version : What ever happened to Dawn of the Ninja?

Wasn't it intended to be a fan movie, but then changed to a comic? What happened?
Andrew NDB

He came out with one issue but it's gone from the internet now. For some reason he paid his whole life's savings to get the art on #1 done, and then that was that.

Damn. That sucks. How does someone go broke over 1 issue?

I mean I'm not too knowledgeable on these things, but art for 1 issue of a comic shouldn't be your whole life savings, right?

At first it was going to go to the movie.

If it wasn't for that super pretentious trailer where the guy is interviewed by his wife about the movie and they revealed a title they'd had printed (this is when it was a "movie") I might have felt bad for him.

I missed this entire thing as it was going on, so seeing a bit of that video my only takeaway is that I'm crushin' on wifey.
EDIT: Skimmed some'a that thread, and yikes, the salt. Remind me to never, ever let you guys know what I'm up to. :trazz:

Do you know that for a fact, or is it just an inference adjacent to "Guy blew his entire life savings on an un-publishable fan comic"?
Granted, that wouldn't be a huge logical leap by any means. I've seen marriages end over a LOT less than twenty grand or whatever it was he put in. Still... ouch, if true.
See, that's why you never gush about The Wife, especially not The Hot Wife. If it don't work out, you look like a goober. Skimming that thread, the dude ended up in a loop where his entire default deflection was, "Wife's hot, love my life!" And that was kinda cringe. But if she did end up leaving him, that'd be even worse. It got to a point where it seemed like "At least I still have my hot wife!" was his only life preserver in that whole mess.
But again, I have my doubts. She didn't immediately leave him after he whipped out that printout in the "movie" interview... so unless that "huge build, disappointing reveal" was some kinda metaphor for their bedroom relationship as well, I'm not gonna believe she left him just because you say so. :trazz: What's your source, Jack Ryder?

Do you know that for a fact, or is it just an inference adjacent to "Guy blew his entire life savings on an un-publishable fan comic"?
Both things are true. The former because he told us that's what happened (basically), the latter because he's clearly no longer with her on his FB and married to someone else.
This was the quote from 2012: "As you may or may not have known, I have personally paid for the development of DOTN up unto this point. I’ve managed to pay for the first two chapters, but I cannot afford anything more than this. It is an estimated cost of $15,000 per chapter for writing, pencils, colors, and letters. I use the word “estimated” because everything outside chapter 2 is not finalized and the page count may vary for the other chapters. There are 13 chapters in total, which means we have 11 more chapters to complete once the second is done. This is an estimated cost of $165,000 to complete the book. I’m not taking a single penny for myself or even trying to recoup the $30,000+ of my life savings I’ve already spent on this project. This book will be free to anyone who wants to read it!"
And I only peeked at his FB because I was curious if he "made it" in the industry in some manner. Nope.

Why the hate?
I mean, it's pretty goofy and naive, but the intentions were good and they shot for the moon.
But, oh man: The "hot wife" defense sure is painful. Buddy of mind did the same thing before she cheated on him with the best man.
Seemed like he was compensating when he found out a group of us were vacationing in Japan, and went on a social media binge of "hot wife, cool life", to make himself feel better, in my mind at least. The timing and behavior seemed to match up.
Then that happened.
It was sort of a "revenge of the nerd" scenario, in which he ended up with someone he felt was really hot, after not having much success, and gained some pride from that fact. I mean, she wasn't actually hot though, imo, but it's subjective.
Now that he realizes she was/is insane, his thing is "I'm telling you man, don't date hot girls", as if I never have dated a hot girl lol. Seems like an attempt at a jab, tbh.
I'm thinking "bro, no, I have and will, just don't date a hot/crazy girl. Or at least don't marry her."

Why the hate?
I know, on the surface it may seem like a lot of people just being petty... but no, there's more to this. At every turn that guy (his artist was no sweetheart, either) was condescending, patronizing and even duplicitous. Even beyond just his conduct on this board, early on Luke hit me up and acted as though he wanted to involve me in his super secret elite club working on the movie script when it was a movie (it was never a movie). As I was looking over things, I told him it all sounded pretty horrible, like the opposite of something with TMNT I'd be interested in, but I'd be happy to give notes because I appreciated the ambition. It turns out he wasn't actually interested in any notes or suggestions of any kind... I was just supposed to fawn over being in his elite club and getting inside knowledge so I would probably come back to the board and cheerlead for him. Well, I'm not his bitch. Also at one point he had seven threads (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=29628) about the comic.

Ahhh m'kay, I legit had no idea and that's why I asked. Ouch, ah well. Is the new wife also hot? That may be a slight consolation for him, if nothing else...
See, I just plain say "Don't gush about The Wife", period, even if she's not hot. It's just plain tempting fate no matter what she looks like. My wife was never "hot", although she kept well in high school, and we USED to have a great relationship, BUT... I made the mistake of both 1. Telling people it was a great relationship and that I was happy (NEVER LET ANYONE KNOW YOU'RE HAPPY, THE UNIVERSE HATES THIS AND WILL PUNISH YOU!!!), and 2. Trusting that it would remain so, despite the universal law of Bitches Be Crazy. So as generally happens, once things got nice and "comfortable" she gained a ton of weight, lost her goddamn mind, and made it her full-time job to tell me and anyone who'll sit still what an awful, mean, terrible, heartless and cruel person I am, for saying things like "Y'know, you go shopping every few weeks and you ALWAYS forget to put the grocery bags in the car, and you always end up crying about it, so... maybe just put the bags in the car so they're there, and stop setting yourself up like this?" SUCH AN ASSHOLE, YOU GUYS!
Just sayin'. Sometimes it takes longer than others, but whenever I scroll FB and see a bunch of people publicly gushing over their relationship... within 5 years that sh*t's deader than disco, every time.
Just don't gush about the "bae", end of story. If you're genuinely happy and want it to last, stifle that sh*t. Talking it up just jinxes it. A TRUE "stable marriage" is two people who share a domicile but ideally almost never interact or see each other outside of dinner and perhaps a quick romp before bed. Those types make it to the end, if you actually do dumb sh*t like spending any time with the person you're just gonna end up wanting each other dead before too long. There's a Right Way and a Wrong Way to do this sh*t. Wrong Way is expecting anything more than some tax breaks and some occasional laundry done. Even that's probably too much to expect, frankly.
-------------
As for the guy himself, eh. A fool and his money are indeed soon parted, that's no shocker.
His earlier spiel about "You just gotta HOPE" was what killed me. Like dude, that "hope" sh*t's for comic books and little kids, in Real Life you need a LOT more than "hope" if you wanna keep your shirt in any area of the entertainment industry. Like I don't know much about the minutiae of Andrew's fan projects compared to This Guy's, but as an outsider looking in I'd have to say from over here that Andrew's seem like the "Here's How To" example, and this dude would be the "What NOT To Do" example.
Like, when I was 8 I started drawing a (very obviously terrible, because I was 8 years old) "fan comic" of an original character that I was gonna sell to DC and become a millionaire. That ceased immediately when I read somewhere that DC doesn't accept solicitations. Okay, pens back in the box, move on. When it's futile and hopeless, you don't keep headbutting the brick wall, you say, "Well, what's a thing I CAN succeed at?" Sounds like this guy was just hoping his pitch was SO GOOD that this billion-dollar corporation would upend its entire way of doing business just to indulge his super-neato idea. Which... well, yeah, that was never gonna happen.
I'unno. All the stuff is dead links so I have no idea what it even would have been. Probably not something I would have cared too much about either way, but yeah, seems like a textbook case of someone who should have had much more managed expectations, not just "hope".

Wow, that whole middle section about "surviving financial abuse" reframes this entire conversation in a very dark manner. :teek:
Y e a h, I think it's all about as clear as it can be without her putting a flashing neon header on her page that says "MY EX BLEW ALL OUR MONEY ON A PIPE DREAM COMIC ABOUT GODDAMN NINJA TURTLES, DEAR GOD LADIES DON'T DATE TMNT FANS FOR YOUR OWN SURVIVAL THESE PEOPLE ARE NUTS OMFG YOU GUYS"
Which, y'know, to her credit... yeah. Too bad for her she had to find out the hard way, though. Hopefully she didn't have to chew the whole leg off to get out of the snare.
It's like I've been saying here for YEARS now: Anyone who loves TMNT that much, to the degree that guy's professed to... run. Don't walk, f*cking RUN. As a brand, it doesn't deserve half of the devotion it gets from the "normal" fans, let alone the full-blown fanatics. "TMNT is my faaaaaaaavorite thing and oh by the way I'm gonna make a movie about it one day!" That's like, yeah... they could say "I have a human head in my freezer" and it wouldn't be as much of a red flag as them saying "TMNT is my favorite thing evar." The human head thing could just as well be for some kind of science experiment or amateur taxidermy project, but there's simply no excuse for loving TMNT that much.
At least the universe seems to have landed all the players in this fiasco on their feet, relatively speaking. So, there's that.
EDIT: But yeah the "Use Me" thing is also pretty WTF.
And like I said, the blonde doesn't quite suit her.

I'm now convinced this "retirement money business" thing is just a tax dodge and she's really a high-price call girl. Otherwise whaaaat the actual f*ck is with that sh*t.
You can't just actually put "Use Me/Stalk Me" on a f*cking legitimate business page and actually provide a real service, right? Am I nuts? Like this is definitely a covert sex/porn thing, it HAS to be... right? I mean for one thing, look at her. The only 6- or 7-figure business a chick who looks like that runs is selling her used panties online. "Generally speaking".
This rabbit hole is getting deeper and more complex all the time. Definitely wasn't expecting all that when I clicked for a chuckle over coffee.
EDIT: "Let's split it wide open"? Uhhhh YEAH she's definitely NOT selling "retirement advice".......
Christ almighty, is that what "planning for retirement" has come to nowadays? Imagine being like 70 and your biggest sway in hiring a financial planner is "I went with the chick who had a ton of sexual innuendos on her website, that seemed like a solid way to go." Imagine being the WIFE of said 70-year old and having to go with him to meet this chick to discuss where your 401K is gonna land.

Well the premise of all three are no more ridiculous than an acid trip, but the turtles being born into a cycle of revenge, and being the only type of their kind, is awesome.
Decorate it with gritty New York streets, ninjas, mutants, science-fiction and you have something awesome.
And the meta of it is cool too - two artists meet, create something on their own, make it happen, and reap the rewards, while maintaining control for longer than most.
Whereas He-Man was just made to make toys and could have apparently just as well ended up as a Spaceman or a soldier. Where's the passion?
And that feeds into the fiction - it's based in a need to sell toys. That just doesn't produce as great of results, which is why the franchise is largely dormant, I suppose.

CLEARLY a hooker, upon investigation. Like, at first I didn't see it but the more layers you peel back, yeah, this is absolute code. Even the body text starts to read very "iffy" the more you re-read it.
Maybe the "financial planning" gimmick is a giant knife-twisting rib on her ex? Like "You blew all our money and so now I have to slut around for cash, but it's okay, I'm doing much better now," and the whole veil of "financial planning" is just a giant middle finger to the guy for "driving her to this". "I wouldn't have to be a prostitute if my ex didn't blow our nest egg on nonsense!" Y'know? It actually all makes sense, in that regard.
But yeah if this whole business of hers is legit I think that actually makes it even worse and less ethical than if she's actually a hooker. Like I think luring people into letting you handle their life savings by being all "tee-hee cheeky double entendres and suggestive poses" would actually be even worse, honestly. Like if she's just a hooker with a classy, "don't get caught cheating on your wife with me" website... that's clever. If she's actually selling financial planning and relying on desperate, lonely old guys' boners to earn clients, well... that's actually pretty skeevy.

TMNT is an awesome property. Don't blame it for the unmentionable fans and the strange things they do.
At any number of points in awkward online fandom engagements, I have found that reminding myself of the sage old advice "I like Turtles" can keep my chill throughout many a storm.

Well, there are indeed a lot of weirdos in the TMNT fandom.
But I'd say the anime/manga fandom and the wrestling fandom are worse overall. The anime fandom has very unsavoury stereotypes that sadly even a lot of well-adjusted fans have to deal with from society. The wrestling fandom... hardcore wrestling fans are just dumb and angry people, seriously.

A 14-inch He-Man.
I'm pretty sure He-Man would actually pack 14 but Prince Adam probably has to get by with half that or less. Probably depends on the canon. :trazz:

You forgot Fat.
Dude no joke if I stocked XXXL shirts I would've sold out in four months. I can't even afford to get those made but they're the only size anyone at a wrestling show can f*cking fit into. It's f*cking madness.

I've only been on a few dates, pathetic I know..but the first one was and still is hot and the one that got away. Mostly cause of my insecurities and mostly because we met too soon in life :). we get along much better now, being older, she's still hot, but sadly long married ;).
one of the last attempts was with a hot, semi crazy girl. she spent most of our dinner talking about her ex boyfriend, who we both knew. and kept on focusing on him for a while long after he moved on. kind of glad that one didn't work out :) soured me on girls named amber :).

I didn't even know who the hell thse people were before opening this thread. I'm neither happy or sad that this failed. The situation seems messy and I don't think I can fully grasp it.

But a lot of hot girls happen to be crazy.

Being an European I had to convert inches to centimeters to understand how massive a 14 inch dick is. My lord! My life would have been a totally different experience with something like that.

Tori Black loves 14-inch penis. Bless her heart (and gaping orifices).

You could be in porn with a pecker like that
Whenever Ron Jeremy applied for the job the hiring dude was like 'you're old, short, fat, bald and ugly. Why would we hire you?' then he whipped it out and the dude was like 'you're hired'.

Shockingly, he wasn't fat, bald or (as) ugly when he started; dude's a lot older than people think.
At first he was a Typical Porn Guy but then once he realized that he could just skate by on the size of his peckah he immediately said "F*ck It" and let himself go. Which I guess makes sense. *I* could never be that much of a lazy slob and I could never stand to look at myself, but most guys only go to the gym to try and score hot chicks anyway, and if you're already banging hot chicks without doing all that then why go to the gym and diet and kill yourself, y'know? I think 99% of guys would let themselves go completely to sh*t if they knew they were guaranteed to still f*ck hot 20-something chicks every day.
It's not a path I could follow but I understand and almost respect it.

So many f*cking lab techs rock khakis and purple belly shirts, too. I did lab moves for everyplace from Loreal to Proctor & Gamble to Bristol Meyers Squibb, met a billion scientists and I gotta tell ya, that was like the standard uniform, totally.
Frankly, if people want April to be a lab tech so badly, she needs to be a short, pudgy balding middle-aged guy OR a chick from India. That's who works in science labs in the NYC area. You might find a 20-something sexy redhead working in a lab but you've got better odds of finding a straight guy working on Broadway.
OH, or Chinese. Lot of 'em are Chinese.

Hey, don't question Stocktronics' dress code for their lab techs. Stockman knows letting the female employees show some skin is good for morale.

HEY here's another one. Ya ready?
Ten years in that business... Never met a single Black scientist.
Like I don't doubt they exist but they must be like unicorns, at least in the NY/NJ area.
But yeah the odds of Baxter owning his own thing would be... Well "slim" would be very generous. Just saying.

I mean, if I had to judge the US demographics by TV shows and movies, I'd assume that at least half of your population was Jewish. In reality its probably like 3% or something. Maybe 30% in New York City, I dunno.
...now someone is totally going to point out that it's strange there are no Jewish characters in TMNT despite them living in NYC, aren't they?

He's a great guy but he's the exception that proves the rule, if anything.
I never said they don't exist just saying they apparently don't take many jobs in the NY/NJ area. Neil is from The Bronx but he made his career elsewhere.
I'm the last guy you wanna get into a semantic circle-jerk with pal.

There'd be TONS!
Way higher than 3% though. Like they have little segregated "communities" so the data gets skewed based on where you go but yeah there's tons of Jewish people. I don't have the numbers but like in NJ for example if you drive through Edison at a certain time of day you'll pass a ton of the ones who wear black wool coats and hats even in 100+ degree weather.
Some places have a ton and some have hardly any, because so many of them tend to cluster. But the overall number is reasonably high, that much I'm pretty sure of. Probably not half but there's a lot.
It gets even harder if you wanna parse it between "Ethnically Jewish" and "Practicing Jewish", because a lot of Jewish people don't actually believe in God and they practice a much more loose version of their faith based as much upon tradition and heritage as anything else. And some don't practice anything but are still "Ethnically Jewish".
So yeah, not very cut-and-dry!
