I think parents, particularly mothers, were bitching about it being to violent and such or something. So they ended up replacing the 'chucks with a grappling hook.
Well, atleast that's what I've gathered through looking in past threads. Maybe someone else could clear this up a bit?

In the UK they went as far as to cut all nunchuck scenes from the movie, and edit the cartoon so you didn't see them much.

that's kinda sick. I mean, a sword is waay more violent than chucks. why did they only go for the chucks?
Or imagine: a laser gun... :D
I hate parental control. Lucky me i don't have to care anymore... :D

I think mikey actually used his chucks against enemies and leo didn't (since it would be killing and that would really get the parents screaming  )
as for lasers, that (or anything that shot a colorful ray instead of bullets) was what they had to use in old cartoons since it wasn't a real weapon that kids could get their hands on and do evil stuff with. just think about it, old tmnt, x-men, thundercats, he-man and almost every other old cartoon used "ray weapons" just to keep screaming parents quiet

If I remember right, the only time that the tmnt actually destroyed the foot foldiers were in the first season, I guess the parenal control took care of any future "killing" of those robots,
The only thing I've heard about the new toon is that some parents are bitching about Casey Jones and his lifstyle, but that was mostly the figure they were yelling about

There was another thread a while back talking about the exact same thing going on here, specifically how it didn't much sense at first that wooden weapons were taken out instead of metal one, but then it got to the argument that gangs used nunchakus in their crimes frequently.
I don't know, I'll have to dig up that old topic if I can find it.
but then it got to the argument that gangs used nunchakus in their crimes frequently.
Yeah, that's the biggest reason I've come across. In the UK, and maybe other countries, 'chucks were used by gangs. And so when the cartoon, and movies, were aired there, they were edited. To make things "easier" on the censors, I guess they decided to simply give Mikey another weapon so editing wouldn't have to be done.

Yeah, but here's something to think about. Leo sliced one of the foot soldiers in half before they found out they were robots! Now, one could argue that he had realized they were machines after Raph's comment, but one could also say that Leo thought he was fighting a person, and had no qualms about killing one.

I don't think that matches his character, since he never kills someone in the 192 following episodes

I didn't mean that it was the only time that they fought foot soldiers but I can't remember any episode besides the first where they cuts soldiers in half, knocks off body parts and so on. In other episodes, they just kicked them or did something else to defeat them but no actual de-attaching of body parts.

Well, I remember that in "Shredder Triumphant", Leonardo cuts a Foot Soldier in half at the waist and pushes its chest with his finger, making it fall. Of course it is meant to be a funny act.

What a load of hypocrisy. We see them bitchin' over nunchakus in TMNT, yet I don't see them complaining over the Death Star in Star Wars, is not a space station powerful enough to blow up planets more threatening than a pair of chuks? Was anyone complaining when The Spy Who Loved Me hit the cimema? I didn't see any mums complaining when the nuclear missiles were launched into the submarines. Are nuclear warheads just not 'scary' enough anymore? So let me get this straight; it's okay to show mass murder on the movies, but then some goofy kids show has a pair of chuck, oh sorry we have to remove them they are too violent. Pathectic.

Where the Hell are kids going to get their hands on a Death Star and nuclear weapons, huh?!? Geez...
They could easily get 'chucks, they were all over the streets. Easy to conceal and dangerous, especially if you don't know how to use them.

Yeah, I have to say that movie was definately over the top. Too much action without any solidity to the plot at all. I mean, I know it's fantasy anyway, but still, older James Bond films had more substance to them. That film was just a cheap excuse to market special effects with Pierce Brosnan's face on them.

Here's the reason why they used to be cut in the UK:
We understand and sympathise with the frustration that the Board's policy on nunchakas can cause for aficionados of the martial arts and the unique skills of proponents like Bruce Lee. Unfortunately we do have to accept that films like Enter the Dragon are not seen only by those who wish to admire these virtuoso displays, but also by those who may see merely a very visually exciting and effective way of causing extreme damage.
When martial arts films started to appear in this country in the early '70s, it soon became apparent that the nunchakas demonstrated in the films were being added to the arsenal of violent gangs. As a result of concern on the part of the police and judiciary it was decided that this very dangerous weapon, which has no legal use in this country outside the martial arts class, should be removed from violent films in order to discourage its spread. This has been a consistent policy ever since and, whether as a result or not, nunchakas have not become as common here as they are in America. The weapon was subsequently proscribed by the Home Office so that it is now illegal to carry nunchakas unless en route to a bona fide martial arts school.
In recent years the Board has modified its policy to some extent so that the weapon is no longer removed on sight. Essentially it is the glamorous use of the weapon in a violent film that concerns us, and the basis for this concern is not that nunchakas are uniquely dangerous, but they are relatively unknown and are relatively easy to make. Though few indeed could hope to match Bruce Lee's technique, it is not so difficult to wave nunchakas around in a fairly impressive way, as we have seen in numerous American videos over the years. The result is a weapon that gives a visual impression of its potential and imbues the user with a particular sense of power.
The Board is not alone in its opinion. Our communications with the police, magistrates and educationists confirm support for our policy. The BBC removed all clear sight of nunchakas from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles programmes before screening them. It could be argued that these were aimed primarily at children, but our concern with this weapon centres equally on adolescents and young men who are more likely actually to use such implements.
It may well be that, over time, nunchakas do become so well-known that our policy can no longer be reasonably maintained. We are not convinced that this time has yet come but we do continually review all policies and adjust them as the situation demands. It must be said that the present moment, when there is so much public concern about screen violence it hardly seems an appropriate time to liberalise on any form of violence in videos, especially given the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994 and amendments to the Video Recordings Act, which require the Board to be particularly aware of the address and appeal of videos.
This quote was made in the 90's before the BBFC changed their policy on weapons.

Here comes the old standards and practices crap again...
I always thought censorship was hypocracy and pointless. I mean, if you don't want kids to see bloodcurdling violence, the one show they SHOULDN'T watch is the news!
Anyway, It's always because some dumb kid tries it at home. I mean, characters were even kicked out of Sesame Street for the same reason. One of my favorite stories (sarcastically favorite) was about Don Music, the frustraited Musician who could never get his song right. Some dumb kids banged their heads for fun, and their whiney parents called Children's Television workshop and then they had to pull him out of the show.
I mean, people can't even "Die" in kids shows. What the *&^% is up with that? Are they afraid that the littlest kids will not comprehend death, and the parents just are too lazy to talk about it with their kids. 9 times out of 10, it's lazy parents who don't want to talk to their kids that want to censore anything. Apparently going , "Now now, little Sydney, violence is wrong. In real life you could get serieously hurt, or arrested."
With that said, I've been studying Turtles, and the S&P guys ravaged what they could. I mean, why else was Shredder's foot army a bunch of robots, and they used "Lazer guns?" I mean, rarely Leo will rip through a Foot, but after he does, you will see it sparking and explode. More often than not, they will more cartoony methods of battle (Like removing a giant plug from the sewers in "Pizza by the Shred"... now that was a little too much, even for a cartoon), and the swords and daggers were used to cut giant ropes to drop sand bags or vats of pudding on the villains...
But, I canot this dissin' Casey from these people. It doesn't help that he's my favorite character. I don't see how he's any worse than Batman, who also lost his parents and became a vigilante. Only, Casey is more realistic. In the real world, who would you see more of? Some guy running around like a crazy with a hockey mask carrying a baseball bat, or some body with a utilty belt who lives in a mansion wih an underground super lair...?

I seem to recall another company releasing Mike's chucks... but it was in costume stores and it was just a prop to go with the TMNT costumes.
Mikey's 'chucks were just another case of uppity parent groups banding together against the media instead of just doing their jobs as parents. The rational among us know that it's not Michelangelo's fault if Billy makes a pair of nunchaku and hits himself on the head, it's his parents' fault for not watching him to make sure he doesn't bloody hurt himself.
If parents don't want their kids exposed to the sort of violence seen on TMNT, then they shouldn't let their kids watch TMNT. Simple as that. Unfortunately, too many parents are just lazy and inept when it comes to raising their children, and blame anyone but themselves when their sloppy parenting inevitably goes wrong.
Of course, this is coming from a guy who's vowed to never have kids, so I'm a wee bit biased. :P

Exactly what I said. Not only that, but the prudish grandmothers living in a part of Maine or something named after an animal's body part (Mooseliver, for example) love to write letters to get things pulled off the air. Look at the old Ren and Stimpy show. John K was ousted be cause of like 3 letters from angry prudes, dispite the hundreds of fan letters...
