If they do make a TMNT movie, what would you like it to be based on?

something tells me the new movie (if there was one coming, that is) should be based on their lives after their teen years. (Adulthood)

But, I thought twice about that idea, since it seemed odd to me, and I think it should go along the lines of the new episodes.

I would like to see a movie based on issue 1 of the original comic book.

Completely new here. A movie with the Turtles as adults would be really cool...I'd like that, but I'd rather it not be explicitly based on entire storylines that came before. I'd prefer that they keep the old origin story and a few of the past bits (like the original movie/comic conflict with the Shredder), with a few new developments that supposedly happened in the intervening years. And I love Splinter, so I'm not sure it's right for me to say I'd like to see him die in a new film...but yeah, the poor guy should go.

(Btw, what issues had Splinter's death in the comics? I'd like to read them so I can cry...)

Well I for one would like to see it take of after the last three film/Next Mutation show. It can be aimed at more mature audiences like the new show. You know, very dark and violent. Maybe this is how it could play, The turtles defeat the Dragon Lord (Who is now a giant fire-breathing monster), but no sooner than the dragons falls, The Shredder come back. It could be revealed that the Super Shredder reverted back to normal Shredder by finding one of those cubes the turtles used on Tokka and Razar. As for Dr. Perry, they could reveal him to be a Utrom. But having retrieved the last TGRI canister, an evil Utrom named Krang comes and assassinates Perry, taking the canister of ooze from him. It could turn out that Krang has been providing the Shredder with Utrom equipment, to try to help him get back on his feet, they were just biding their time awaiting for the fall of the Rank, now The Foot is back...

That is very interesting, but it doesn't make much sense. They should disregard anything that happened past the first movie, especially the next mutation. Nobody has seen it, so they will have no idea what it was if they saw the movie.

They won't, if there IS a new movie, it will be a completly new beggining, re-telling the story and possibly adapt MIRAGE a little more closely

I think your the one who needs to get over it, if you sent more time paying attention to the show and less time critizing Venus you would have noticed the following

1) The subway lair is exactly the same as it was in the movies
2) The Foot Ninjas in both the films and the TV show wear the same uniform.
3) Splinter's ear was cut.
4) Shredder's face is scarred
5) Shredder's exact quote, "When I'm done with you freeks, I'll find your furry rat friend, and slice off his other ear!"
6) And for the record, Splinter quote in the first movie "I jumped at Saki's face, bitting and clawing, but he throw me to the ground and took one swipe with his Katana slicing my ear".

Karpo: Thanks! I'll have to look for that.

Jarrah: What Jeff said -- that made for an interesting post, but I think I'd be wishing for one of your double katanas so I could cleave the screen in two if I ever saw that in a theater.

Zarius: And what are you talking about?!?!?!? NEXT MUTATION WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!! Way better than Smallville.

Oddly enough, I think I meant that seriously. If they ever release NM on dvd, I'm all over it.

Also, I think that they're bloody television shows and movies about mutant turtles, and while I'm all up for discussing the merits of this or that regarding a series, I don't think that there's anything here that one needs to "get over"... And I hope you two aren't seriously upset about the issue. Now kiss and make up! :goofygri:

Ack, sorry Jarrah -- I meant to edit that before anyone else posted again. But yeah, the comment still stands -- they're shows about mutant turtles for chrissakes! Not that I don't dig the green guys, of course.

Honestly I think NM was pretty bad (what I saw of it, anyway, which admittedly wasn't much), but it was bad in that way that makes things must-haves. This probably has something to do with the fact that it was a show about mutant turtles -- it's kinda hard for that to be really offensive.

And why not talk to Zarius? I'm already under the impression that he/she doesn't like me -- after all, I'm not a "true fan" of Buffy and Angel, and I'm probably not a "true fan" of the TMNT either -- but the feeling's far from mutual. :)

Of course I want it to be based around the old cartoon series. I want my Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady and Shredder as he was in the cartoon.

Just one movie like that is all I ask...

I'm not entirely sure what I'd like it to be about, whatever it is (if it does happen) I'll support it most likely. I have a hard time thinking what they could do for a story in a fourth one if they do stay with the old movie line, but I guess the skies the limit. I might be slightly miffed if they start a whole new beginning story.

Yah, probably... that'd make him all the more cool.

They could totally pull it off nowadays... when I heard about the first TMNT movie I imagined Krang was gonna be in it and it wouldn't have frightened me... of course, I was sorta desensitized as a kid, my brother, 7 years my senior, was a movie buff and we'd watch horrors together all the time... scared the hell out of me, but I am a better person for it today :P
Also, I was imagining how they woulda done it based on what I already saw of the turtles... and it looked kind of... dumb. COmputer generated FX Krang would kick so much ass if done by the right people!

Zarius: Well, your post did give me that impression. Glad to know that's not the case! :)

As far as the live-action Krang goes, yeah, it'd be some scary crap. Doesn't mean I wouldn't want to see it, but I can totally understand why they wouldn't want to go that route -- you can have a gross little cartoon brain and he can be funny, but stick that thing in a movie where it's oozing around and making wet noises and things get creepy pretty quickly.

But if they did decide to do it, I wouldn't want to see a CG Krang -- they'd have to go all-out old school and make a nasty puppet. Anyone remember Boglins? Not even the Hulk can touch 'em, and they were just simple toys. An animatronic puppet would be aaaawesome. And scary.

MW8979

If it's to attract any kind of audience, then basing it on a cartoon or having it follow a couple of sequels most moviegoers have forgotten isn't an option. But I'm kinda nervous about the prospects of a fourth film anyway... new films tend to use CGI all over the place and I hate when films look like they've been done on someone's Atari.

In the last few years, I read a lot of articles saying that there was a new CGI TMNT movie coming out and that John Woo was going to direct it. That didn't work out.

February 12, 2003

Laird:
"Mirage Studios last year signed a deal with a company called Digital Rim. It was an option deal to co-develop a live action or CGI movie. John Woo is a partner in Digital Rim. The press release went out that said what I just said. People picked up on it ands translated that to mean that John Woo is going to direct a Turtles movie. That was never true. We hoped he would be involved and I think he even released something that said he was interested. That option is now expired, anyway. Ain't It Cool just blew up with all these funny posts excited about John Woo directing it."

from:
http://www.cinecon.com/news.php?id=0302126

Which turns out to be really interesting since he actually talked about it in an interview along with a TMNT TV series.

3-June-02
Director/producer John Woo told SCI FI Wire that his proposed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie would use computer animation instead of animatronic puppets, as did the 1990s series of live-action movies based on the comic franchise. Woo will produce the proposed new film and a television series based on it. "We're still planning," Woo said in an interview. "I [will] work on this project as a producer with my partner, Terence Chang, as co-producer. The other companies [Digital Rim Entertainment and Mirage Studios] wanted to start with television first and then make a movie. Now we're starting with a story."

Woo said that computer animation would give Turtles a different feel from the previous film versions. "CGI can create more interesting techniques," he said. "It's also good for designing some of the crazy action. On the other hand, we want to be closer to the original [comic book], try to make it more moody and darker. CGI can create that kind of mood." New Line Cinema, producers of the three previous Turtles films, is not reported to be involved in the CGI version.

from:
http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?2002-06/03/13.00.film

This is interesting as well:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TV): Acclaimed author Peter David indicated on his website that Dreamwave has approached him about doing a new series to tie in with the new animated TV show.

from:
http://www.darkhorizons.com/news03/030127.php

Also on darkhorizons about TMNT4:

October 4, 2001
Dark Horizons has posted a report where David Kane did a UK fanzine interview with comic creator Brendon McCarthy and he had this to say about the shelled amphibians.

"I was able to find out that he has just finished work designing a look for a new live-action "NINJA TURTLES" movie, planned for release even if there is a John Woo CGI feature! He said that he had also written the storyline with his original collaborator on the first Turtle movie, the director Steve Barron. He wouldn't say anything about the movie's plot, but suggested that it was a fairly "adult" treatment of the characters.

Then there is:
Laird:
"And we're also working with Hallmark Entertainment to develop a two-part, live-action TV movie. I think the plan for that is, if everything goes well, to get that out next year sometime, probably in the first half of 2004."

from:
http://www.comics2film.com/ProjectFrame.php?f_id=167

So there is a lot of interesting stuff. A few of these articles are several years old but there are some more recent ones as well.

MY TMNT MOVIE WISH LIST

Start from scratch

Based on Mirage

Live-action (with or without CGI) or Cel-Animated

All red masks

Brigette Lin as Karai

Enough Said

BTW why does everyone hate CGI so much. I mean the Hulk looked stupid, but that doesn't mean the Turtles would.

I like both CGI AND animitronics. Whatever is needed to get the job done.

I'd prefer anamatronics. It just "feels" more real that CGI ever will. Most of the time, no matter how hard they try, you can still just "sense" that it's CGI.

Like Jurassic park, and the Flintstones movie :) for example.

You can't "sense" CGI. The only reason why you'd say that is either because you know the movie contains it or because the characters are so unrealistic and cartoony, just by looking at them you can tell it's not a costume, because a costume of that size/shape/whatever couldn't move as smoothly as CGI. I don't think there's anything wrong with it really, it's getting better all the time. Eventually it'll be so good that nobody will notice any difference between reality and computer generated images....it'll be like the matrix....

Jurassic Park had the only decent CGI.

I agree with those who say no CGI.You wouldn't need CGI to create a living brain. An animatronic puppet would work fine and be more realistic.
And I can't speak for others, but I'll tell you why I hate CGI.I grew up watching movies like ET,Gremlins,Harry And The Hendersons,Short Circuit,Batteries Not Included and of course Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All great films with believable creatures. They didn't have complex computer animation back then,so they actually had to build creatures from scratch. And the beauty of watching a creature film is that the being you're seeing actually exists in some form. That someone took the time to design and build said creature.Computer animation has become a visual effects crutch. It's not even a very good crutch as most CGI characters aren't near as believable as their animatronic counterparts.
Let's use Star Wars as an example, the Ewoks and Jar Jar in particular. The Ewoks' faces didn't really move, there was not any complex mechanics there, just a suit and little more. And yet they were still more believable than Jar Jar.That is simply because the Ewok costumes actually exist. They were there giving the actors something to play off.Not only that, the costumed actors' movements and actions were realistic, because there was no need to plot and plan how a real creature would move and then attempt to program into a computer. They moved like a real creature because they were being controlled by a real creature.Jar Jar in contrast moved like a cartoon character.A $30 Furby is more realistic than the umpteen million dollar Jar Jar.
Or take Yoda.Nobody thought he looked particularly fake in Empire,he was a very believable character. But in Attack of the Clones,he was turned into Sonic The Hedgehog. The Battle with Dooku was cool once you got past the fact they were ripping off Sega.CGI characters just have no soul.

About the CGI thing, yes you can definetly see what is CGI and what is not in a live action movie. Same thing with traditional animation, Drawn characters on live action film are not bind to the laws of physics, the animators try to simulate it.

But I like the idea the Hallmark project had, combining CGI and live action. Actors in costumes for the most part, but CGI in facial detail and some stunts. That would probably work very well.

PS.

A little late, but it has been a habit of mine to post this in every Live action Krang thread, here's my pick for the part.

GOTTA LOVE THAT PIC

Anyway, I would prefer a cel-animated (but not spun off from either TV cartoon) TMNT movie to live action, but for the record I think Jar-jar was about 9 times more believable than the Ewoks (though I like the Ewoks better). I grew up with Gremlins and ET too, and I like both CGI AND Animatronics/suit-mation, and I gotta say a combination of the two would be great for TMNT.

Realistically, the odds are slim to none that Krang will be included in any future TMNT projects (especially a movie). Even if it were to begin filming tomorrow (which obviously isn't happening), by the time the movie would be ready for release in theatres, the Krang character will have been wholly absent from the 'current' TMNT universe for at least ten years.

(Well, except for that whiny Utrom's cameo in the 'toon.)

And considering he doesn't even exist in the source material, I sincerely doubt he'd even be considered.

I think a continuation of the old movies would be cool, but not for newer generations ('cause they might not get it) but it would be cool. And definitley stay away from CGI, sometimes it's good (like in Lord of the Rings) but sometimes it's bad (Yoda NEEDS to be a puppet!). I was watching the first movie with my friends the other day and we were talking about how cool that they used animatronics and real actors and stuff. Most likely the Turtles would be all CGI and only a few of the Foot Soldiers would be real and the rest CGI.

Problem here is you can't go back anymore. The new series is "based" (and I use the word loosely) around the old school comics. This is also what the 1st movie was based on. Hence to do another, dark atmosphere movie based on the Mirage storyline is simply going over well worn ground. I love the old school as much as the next person but it's no fun to make a movie that's already been made.

What you COULD do is "loosley" (and I use the word....loosley... :-? ) base it on cartoon series so you could intro characters such as Krang, Bebop n Rocksteady but give it the dark violent edge that has proven popular with the fans. As for the Technodrome, I'd love to see what the like of Pixar could do to that! The only problem is how to "re-introduce" the twice dead Shredder.......
Just an idea.

I wanna splinter plushie to go with the turtles. maybe they will someday...

I just hope a new movie does come out whether it is CGI or live action. I would really like to see an animated movie with highly detailed graphics/animation though.

Splinter: Raphael come sit by me...
Raph: could't this wait till morning??
Splinter: You will listen now!!! My master Yoshi's first rule was; "Posess the right thinking, only then will you gain the gifts of strenght, ballence, and peace." I have tried to channel ur anger Raphael...but more remains. Anger clouds the mind, turned inward it is an unconqurable enemy. U r unique among ur brothers for u choose to face this enemy alone, but as u face it...do not forget them and do not forget me. I am here my son!
Classic....classic splinter....i like him kickin' butt but u need him to be a ninja master and caring father....that's the true splinter

I always cry when I watch that scene. So touching! :D

Yes, I absolutely agree on the ninja master/caring father facet. The old cartoon just never had that, and sometimes I wish it had...

Good points, I just like seeing a Splinter a lil more like the one in the New series. I loved Splinter in the first movie. He looked okay in the second one, the third one I"m not even going to touch. I guess that's why I like the Archie Splinter so much, he does a nice mix of both. I've always wanted to do a thread to see what people's Perfect Splinter would be like...

:)

Yeah, a Splinter plushie would be great. I might even settle for a Ben (from the new Willard) plushie...but that was one evil thing.

Splinter from the first movie would probably be my perfect one, though I do like the one from the new cartoon also (and if a plushie were made, I'd probably prefer that it look like the new 'toon one, since he's the cutest one yet). Splinta from the anime was frickin' badass, but not the caring father figure I wish I had.

And at least Splinter had a great sense of humor in the third movie (as he did in all of them) -- the lampshade bit was awesome hehe.

The Old-guiding sage characters are always my favourites.

if there will be a new movie then i hope shredder still kick turtle butt.
and this time maybe bepop and rocksteady could join him.

and for the four heroes i would like to see some comic carachters like ninjara or cudley the cow joining the good guys.

but then its only a dream,it would have been awsome anyway!!!
