View Full Version : FAQ for the Archie TMNT Comics

Seen something like this in one area of the Dreamwave fourms, and I thought it would be a good idea. A thread that covers all the general questions that come up regarding this comic series. Like a FAQ, as well as something that prevents previous discussions from being lost, and then repeated again later.

Thus, this thread is for all things regarding the Archie TMNT sieries, the mutanimals, and other characters from this (Ninjara, Slash, Cudley).

For questions regarding the series itself, the covers, and summaries, Dan Berger is also in the process of posting info on the Archie series at NinjaTurtles.com.

I love this series! I still mourn its untimely cancellation. Overall, I would consider this to be the most consistant TMNT series in terms of quality and story. It's not the "kiddie" TMNT book! Read it!

I own about 20 Archie books and they have some really good storys. I just don't like the inconstant quality of the art and the fact that there is a new mutant/man-animal in almost every book.

I think there is one issue where the artist switches halfway through. It didn't bother me though.. I think Jim Lawson was one of the artists of that issue. He did a little bit different kind of art style on Adventures than he did in the Mirage comics.

Yeah, once Allan takes over the art is fabulous.

Yeah, I liked the Allan issues with the Laird covers. Allan did some pretty cool covers too.. I have one, I think it's from one of the Sarnath issues. I think he also drew the TMNT 3 movie adaption. It'll be cool to see Allan's take on the Turtles today.

Allan is one of the contributors to the new "Tales of" , I think. So there you go! Now you can see his take on the Mirage TMNT. Lawson and Dooney have both worked on the Archie series, and Farley did some work for the Archie TMNT Universe source book. I think he did most of the profiles.
Archies' TMNT Adventures wasn't a bad read, I liked how they paralelled the kiddy toon and grew out of it's shadow to become something more and something better. I thought that was realy cool. Also, I thought it was decent of them to end it all with a three issue mini, similar to how they started...Even if it wasn't part of their regular TMNTAdventures continuity.

I know someone who said he wished the original cartoon was more like the Archie series, and I do as well!

Anyone know where I can get that Source book?

Archie's "The Mutant Universe Source book?" It was actually three issues, and I think you can get them from Mirage's back issue catalog in the Adventures section. I think they have it. But If I'm wrong, my apologies..try Amazon or E bay .

Eric Talbot also helped out with some covers. There is one of Candy at the Mutanimals' graves i think? Well anyway, it is inked by Talbot. It seems like most of the Mirage guys have gotten their hands in the Adventures comic at some point in time.

Also, I have always wondered this. Did Laird do the cover for TMNTA #9? (the first appearance of the Chameleon). Well the cover is a homage to Mirage's Raphael #1 cover, and if I remember correctly, I think it had Laird's signature on it. If it was by him, its one of the only times I saw him draw the Turtles "cartoony".

Thanks, Putrescent.. I think my favorite Laird covers were the ones he did with Eastman. But of his later ones, I like the one with Tattoo strangling Mike, hahh.
Elite5Raph, the Mutanimals died, but I don't exactly remember how. I think another team scouted them out and killed them on an island with lots of guns. This was done in back-up stories of TMNT Adventures, after the Mutanimals series was cancelled.
I think this info is true, but if I'm wrong, anyone feel free to correct me.

Shredder's last appearance was in the Future Shark Trilogy (issues 42-44) and Ninjara's first appearance was in issue #28 when the TMNT went with Splinter and April to Japan to rescue a friend.

it's a shame that the next shredder story line never came about "the Forever War"
I would love to see the art and read the stories for it I wish I knew how to contact the artist about it. maby we could some how help get the story published to me the archie series never ended because of it.

The artist (Chris Allan) has said no story was ever fleshed out. That cover we all have seen of Shredder and Don was done in preparation, but the storyline didn't really exist.

The issue where the turtles get their colors was an issue seperate from 'how they got their weapons', right? I didn't much care for those 'young turtle' stories.

I'm currently rereading the cyber turtles storyline and yknow, these books are still awesome!

the "How they got their colors" issue was kindof part of another comic. I'm not sure, but i think it was part of a special. I know there was more than one story in that book.

idont know where i heard it from but its a couple of years ago, ninjara is mezcaal grandmother or something. there was made an ninjara comic not many pages and hard to find i think but you see ninjara has got kids with this wolfman from the moon eyes saga. so in the end raphael got to be with a foxy lady after all.i rember the cyber samurain comics it was pretty fun and a good story line too.

Yeah, and then he was tortured by the Government Man.

Goverment Man: So, you're a turtle.
Michaelangelo: That's right.
Government Man: You lie! *zap*
Michaelangelo: Dude! What's your problem?
Government Man: Silence! *zap*

Something like that. I stopped reading the series after they took away Ninjara, my favorite character; I like to think that that's the reason that the series ended a few issues later--people stopped buying it--even though I know it's not.

Null sells the Earth to an evil bug queen. Slash discovers his friends were killed during this diaster so he goes insane. He helps Future Don and Raph fly into space and take the Queen out. In the end he kills himself in an attempt for them to escape. And it goes down hill from there really. Raph loses his girlfriend. The turtles get capture by the government and escape. Future Don and Raph return and yeah...it's hard to explain when you don't have every issue ><

So these issues really were great? I had two cyber-samurai issues when I was younger and loved em to death along with a small group of other issues from this series, but I was young and I didnt have enough to really get an idea of the series in general...do they all hold up to that quality of those cyber-samurai issues? The reason I'm asking is an awesome member of our community(Zeno) is shipping me some of these issues, and I wanted to know if the treat I am in for is as good as I remember...also does anyone have anything to say about the quality of issues #50 and up? Cause thats where theres the most continuity with the comic issues I'm receiving and hoping I'll be in for a good read. Thanks for any info you guys have!!!

I (and others) have talked of the Archie TMNT Comic in various posts. And yes, it is a great series.

Starting off with cartoon episode adaptations, the comic quickly went on it's own with original stories beginning at issue 5. With the group you are getting mainly starting at issue 50, obviously have a bit to back-track on. The early issues introduce the various characters, and some storylines that get followed up on later, etc.

Also have a variety of Mini-Series, some Specials, and a few other things.

After reading a lot of Mirage volume one stories and some of the Tales comics, I decided to check out Archie. So far I've liked what I've read. It seems to almost be a blend of the cartoon and the black and white comic, in that the style is similar to the cartoon's, but there seems to be a lot more imagination involved like the black and white comic. It's not as formulaic like the cartoon was.

Plus, it looks like they actually did what I've said they should have done instead of Venus in the live action show: have April learn to kick some butt.

I gotta say I'm most excited for the Cyber- Samurai type saga..I had two issues as a kid and fell in love with them...I've heard there are some other good arcs such as The future Shark Saga...although I'll only have the final issue of that? enough to kinda enjoy it?
I also heard terricide is a good arc, and I'll be getting that one...but seriously, do any top the Cyber-Samurai ones? those were just awesome.

I had the final issue of Future Shark as a kid and enjoyed it, although it was a little harder to follow.

A lot of people here seem to always mention the same story arcs as being must reads, but from my experience just about any of them are worth checking out if you're a big enough fan.

One thing that I'm kind of curious about, after reading the Mondo Gecko issue. So the cartoon series really doesn't count after the Incredible Shrinking Turtles or whatever it was called? Because Mondo's comic origin contradicts the cartoon, which I'm not saying is a bad thing. So is it going to be the same thing with characters like Slash?

Jon

*LeoInRed*

As Mutant Man and I have noted, the series has alot of good stories. The Cyber Samurai one is good (with showing the Future Turtles time period, which we've had glimpses of before in other issues). Future Shark Trilogy and Terracide are another couple good ones. Of course, as with most comics, starting from the beginning will do you well (even the cartoon adaptations, as those are fun). But the original stories kick it up some, and keep increasing that.

*Mr._Mutant_Man*

On your question of different origins for characters (like you know of for Mondo Gecko), yes many characters have different origins.

Slash, as you wonder about, is an alien from another planet in the Archie TMNT universe.

I got TMNT Adventures 58 today. One of the few issues I missed out buying when the series was in stores. This issue depicts how the guys got their different coloured masks (before they all had red masks). But I noticed something not seen before or after in the Archie series. They had tails!!! :o WTF?! I know they have tails in Mirage and Image....but it's so weird seeing em with tails in TMNT Adventures. Not even in the other toddler issues (the 2 parter on how they got their weopons) are there tails!

One has to wonder if getting the different coloured masks made their tails dissapear...but then again Raph kept the red. Weird.....

There are some issues with tails, but I think it just depends on the artist. Look at the Lawson issues, I think they have tails in them.
