I was just wondering if anyone here has been to the Smithsonian in Washington DC. I've been twice. Once in '97, I believe, and once in 2001.

If you went, you saw this. I saw it both times I went and I was just wondering if anyone else had. It was cool to see.

Note: That is NOT me...that's just the only/best picture I could find of what I'm refering to.

Yeah, I've been there, but it was in the 80's sometime.. I don't think they had the psycho Mike then. I remember they had some other stuff though like a display of Superman comics and a Kermit the frog puppet.

Another thing that sticks out in my mind is Mr. Rogers sweater.

The Mike there is towards the end of an exhibit on the atomic bomb (And thus, the effects of radiation), it's rise in the 50s, and the complete public scare from it. They have an actual bomb shelter on display that was dug out of someone's yard, and they even have pictures up of them digging it out. Very cool stuff.

I used to go to the Smithsonian when I lived in DC, but more often than not, frequented the Natural History Museum and the Air and Space Museum.

I'm kinda glad I never saw that thing as a child, because undoubtedly, it would have spawned a few nightmares. Glad to see a Ninja Turtles go down in history, though.

Mikey has those freaky bug eyes there. Was that from the second movie?

i think its the one from the third flick....i know the eyes look messed but without anything to control them they look a little messed.

Anybody remember that pic of the Donatello suit from Ooze?

I'm also thinking maybe those are just replacement eyes or something and they took the actual operational ones out.

Or maybe it's one of the "action" suits. (Without the anamatronic heads)

It's the TMNT 3 stunt Mikey with eyes replaced so they stay open.

ok that is scary looking...really. :o

It's pretty lame when they use the WORST movie's costume which is a very poor representation of our heros.

I went to DC in 91 or 92.. no TMNT in the Smithsonian then as that's definately a 3rd movie costume.

Same here...if I'd seen that at age 3 or 4, it might have affected me as well.

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure we toured the Smithsonian on our trip to D.C. back in 1994...I do not remember that Mikey thing being there, but its possible I forgot about it. :-?

I'm pretty sure it was the National Museum of American History, being it the one with pop culture stuff. I really wish I could go back and visit, the entire exihibit that Mikey was in was facinating...the entire history of the atomic bomb and it's effect on our culture, both good and bad...

Is that a costume or a statue?

Hyper Metal Sonic

I'm pretty sure it's one of the movie costumes...

Anywho...maybe I was wrong about it being part of the atomic exhibit...my memory is fuzzy...

Quote:
"The National Museum of American history provides some American popular culture artifacts to relate to classic themes previously identified in other cultures and in the other museums. A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume from a Hollywood movie prompts a discussion of the powerful mythic elements to be found in the Ninja Turtle story. (They survived a treacherous passage to the underworld (they were dropped down a manhole into the New York City sewer system!) where they were transformed (by exposure to radioactive material) into half-animal, half-human creatures, yet they transcended their circumstances by undergoing training in the martial arts to become warriors for the forces of good, fighting the forces of evil. Elsewhere an enormous 19th century marble statue portrays George Washington as Zeus, chief patriarch of the Greek pantheon, complete with toga and sandals. A display case of Wizard of Oz paraphernalia, including Dorothy's ruby slippers from the I939 movie, is linked with a Northwest Coast Native American totem pole in the Museum of Natural History, Story of Long Sharp Nose. Both are what scholars of comparative mythology call quest stories, where a youth makes the passage from child-like dependency to adult self-reliance in the course of a journey."

Wild. I'll have to check that out next time I'm in D.C. Trouble is, there are so many cool museums there, and Baltimore is nearby too. Natural History Museums are almost always my first choice.

I was in D.C. just this past summer, and I toured the Museums, don't remember seeing that, though I do remember seeing a Snoopy one concerning his fights against the Red Baron... Irregardless, if I get a chance to go again, I'll definately see if I can find that.

You know, the smithsonian tends to switch their exhibits...so it may not be there anymore.

Yeah, I know, but irregardless, it'd still be interesting to find.

I went to DC in 91 or 92.. no TMNT in the Smithsonian then as that's definately a 3rd movie costume. If you went in '91, then you went the same year as me! I went with a class trip in late June, 1991 and the Smithsonian was one of our tour stops. I didn't see anything with TMNT, come to think of it, we were so rushed, the whole memory is a blur! During my college years, I found an issue of the Smithsonian magazine dated December, 1994 and it featured an article with some photos taken on the set of TMNT 3. I remember the article had pictures of Leonardo in his samurai costume, grinning broadly with those teeth the size of piano keys! Gawd, they were pretty creepy faces. I guess because the article was in that particular issue of the magazine, the Mikey costume was unveiled at the museum in 1994. If it's still there, I wouldn't mind seeing it in person, but I dunno. I'll have nightmares just by looking at the photo! :o
