I think that he does what he wants with his creation, and that's cool. But he can be kinda arogant at times.

I have to give him props for standing up for his creation, and not losing his integrity by disregarding his vision to please fans.

Though I've lost faith in his ability to connect and channel the characters.

I wonder if his ears are burning...

((BTW, if this becomes a bashing session, this will be locked.))

Meh.

I don't know the man, so I don't personally think anything of him. I love and support what he and Kevin Eastman created, that's about it. I grow kinda tired of the whinging sessions about him though...

Yep, that's exactly how I feel.

I'm sure they are great guys, but alls I care about is the fact that they created something like the TMNT.

I think he should at least consider what the fans want... after all, who made him rich? Who keeps paying him for the comics? Who keeps him in buisness?

It's great he does what he wants, but he often comes across rude to fans who offer constructive criticism. I could understand if the fan was like "OMG d00d, j00r t3h 50xx0rz!!!11! D0 7h!5! lolz!", but the ones he responds to are usually more thought out and valid. And that all goes back to my point that it's the fans who are the ones giving him money to buy his Segways and live a decent life.

Well I doubt it was listening to fans complaints and changing things that made him 'rich'. If people don't like what he does, make your own stories and comics for other people who share the same views. That sounds fair enough doesn't it?

Its odd..I was just reading the Turtle Tracks section in the back of one of the Mirage issues from last year and Laird was addressing this. He really dislikes this attitude in fans. The way he explained his reasons for it being wrong to him made partial sense at least...I can see it from both sides I guess.

I don't know the guys or what they're like in real life although I've read comments about each on this board. We do have them to thank for the Turtles. :)

Yeesh. I am so sick of all this 'fan entitlement' nonsense.

No, a creator does not somehow 'owe you' because you buy their comics. No, being a fan doesn't give you some sort of 'power' over how the franchise is run. There is no reason he should have to 'listen to what the fans want'. HE is the writer, not you. If you want to offer constructive criticism, that's your right. But it's also his right to ignore it - criticise it if he chooses - and keep doing what he wants to. If you want to write comics, then write your own. It's not somehow his duty to write exactly what Fan #45543 from Ohio wants to read.

Artistic work isn't like an appliance. You can return a microwave if it doesn't work properly - even solely by your standards - and get one that performs the way you want it to. Art is subjective. If you don't like it, then you move on to something more suited to your tastes. Whining about it and demanding it be changed to better suit your 'standards'? That means nothing to Peter Laird, the artist. It's his idea, his vision, and he'll do what he wants with it. You can either enjoy it, or don't; and likewise buy it, or don't.. That is the extent of a fan's 'power'.

Rant Over. :trazz:

Peter Laird?
I think he's human. Like the rest of us..Well..Like "most" of us.
I have nothing against the man, And I see no reason to scream and yell at him eighter. He's doing what he enjoys doing, and the rest of us get to read stories about charachters we love to read about. So what if we occassionaly don't like the way a story plays out, there's always the next one. There' will always be stories that will not make everyone happy. That's just how it is. Just remeber, The good ones will be there too.
If you where the creator, and everyone kept telling you how to write about YOUR creations, How would you feel about it? I would just tell you flat out if you don't like it, don't read it. That simple. We would have stories that we want to tell, and we'd tell them. wether "fans" liked them or not.
I hold nothing against Him.

He helped create the turtles and he's brought them back

After 20 years he is still closely involved with the TMNT. That is something that few comic book artists do. One has to respect him for that.

I don't know much about him. Just that he is one of the TMNT creators and that he made millions off of them. I don't really care to know much more about him. I'm not the type of person to idolize someone. I usually don't care who creates the content as long as I like the content. I keep content and creators seperate in terms of what/who I like. Just like if I like a song, it doesn't mean that I automatically like the singer/band at all. It's the same with everything else.

I'm with Major Pain except for the death threat and the turtles making him where he is today since i don't draw...

God dammit, not one THESE threads again, they only exist to provoke flame-bait, and at least with the whole Utrom/Shredder debate, it was done rather cleanly.

Noone's telling you to waste your money , or your time reading Volume Four, but fans of his work DO like Laird's current MIRAGE comics.

I'm sick of the co-creator getting his ass beat down simply because of a few bitter selfish nerds.

He gave us TMNT with Kevin Eastman, respect him.

Let me clear my post up... I didn't mean he should change things with the comic, just how he deals with fans who disagree with him.

He's often rude to fans who give suggestions. He dosent have to, and shoulden't have to, use them, but he SHOULD at least be nice to his fans. He can't expect everyone to send in praise with everything he does.

EDIT: I DO enjoy the coimcs, that's not what this thread is about, it's about what we think of Laird.

After seeing the 4 interviews of him on the TMNT DVDs.

He looks like a great guy to talk to.

I don't care if he does TMNT his own way since he & his ex-partner Eastman came up with the idea and now it's evolved in the years. he has better control of the series.
I'm not sure if there are any other comic artists that do stuff their own way.

So I like the way he's doing with the new cartoon and other stuff he does at Mirage.

Every person has their own way in all.

Ohh Boy

Laird is cool

very cool

I read an interview with, which somebody posted here on the Drome. And Laird is the only of the TMNT creaters WHOM I have really heard of. Well I know what Kevin looks like and so on. But from I've read, Kevin kinda seems like a bad guy ??? :-?

I love him. I totally understand how he is about complaining fans. If I created a popular comic book series I would do what I wanted with it, no matter what fans think. People wouldn't have to like it, the most important thing is that I would like it. Storytellers who change their stories to apease that masses are called sellouts.

i thank he and eastman for creating such a cool series as TMNT,
the toyline at times seems questionable, but that's how the commerce goes... i have no opinion of them, they created one of my greatest artistic loves, so i'd like to think of it more of that way.

I'm just glad he and Kevin Eastman came up w/the TMNT and were able to allow others to see their creations through the three films, and the various TV shows. Kudos to him for still being interested in his creation twenty years after the fact.

I love his creation, I love his art, and I appreciate him. But I don't like him much. The man can not take constructive criticism. I am an artist, and when someone tells me how they believe I can improve my work, I don't lash out at them and insult their intelligence because they have different ideas than I have. Some of the things he says to the fans are just insulting and unnecessary. Whether it's his creation or not, it's the fans that keep it going. Like someone else said, we're the ones who put the money in his pockets so he can buy his segways. He should at LEAST respect our opinions.

Exactly what kinda insulting things did he say to the fans? I keep hearin em but I want examples.

Despite what some individuals have claimed on this thread (only two by my count), I have yet to find any of these examples. And I own every single issue of the new Mirage series (except for issue 6).

It seems to me that what most people call "cannot take constructive criticism" really means "doesn't bow down to and massage the ego of every person that writes in to him".

This has less to do with Laird and more to do with defects in people's psychology as a whole. Its a case of extreme narcissism, which seems to have taken hold in Western society as a whole. People want their egos to be validated, acknowledged, massaged, worshipped even. When someone points flat-out that many of their concerns are artficial, unfounded, or even unintelligent and/or irrational, they try and demonize the criticizer.

Such demonizations include standard lines like "he's arrogant" or "he's a bully" or "he doesn't respect others' opinions" or "he can't take criticism".

They, in essence, project their own egotistical deficiencies onto the criticizer in a vain attempt to make themselves look better. Typical Freudian/Jungian projectionism.

Very, very sad. In my opinion.

Rant over. Laterz.

Although that's true I think it's his defence of people criticising Lawson's latest drawing of Vol. 4 that is where this has come from (although I think the inker being a bit slack seems more the cause since City at War looks ace)

I'm not saying I think he's wrong or anything but he also feels it necessary to put in his rants about people who say things to him about his segway and he just comes off as a bitter person.

But I already posted my views, an artist is an artist
