Why Is Lord Dregg An Unpopular Villain?

It's just that i see a lot of negative comments about this guy.

EZweasel 07-12-2004 05:19 AM

thumbs up

Zelda 07-12-2004 05:29 AM

I've only seen the 'bonus' episodes...somehow I missed seeing him on TV so I don't know much about him. He doesn't seem that bad though--just the whole 'mutate out of control Leo' 5 million times was getting annoying.

Anarchistguy 07-12-2004 06:41 AM

That's because The Shredder was in the old show for WAAAYYY too long. So when he left the show, the fans got so used to him that they couldn't accept Dregg. I liked the guy, I didn't mind him. I REALLY hope it doesn't turn out the same way in TMNT 2003 . People just don't give people a chance. They watch like 2-3 episodes, he automatically sucks!! This is LAME!!!

J Legault 07-12-2004 06:59 AM

I agree that the 2 episodes with Leo becoming a Mutated monster was annoying.

Course I haven't seen all the episodes from the Red Sky series yet.

I just know Shredder is trapped in Dimension X I think, then this other villian Lorg Dregg just steps in and becomes the new villian. only he does the same thing Shredder would do try to take over the world.

Not sure which episode had the TMNT met Dregg. But he's not the best villian I'd choose for TMNT. As long as he won't make an appearance or camoe in the new show.

Kazari 07-12-2004 07:02 AM

Actually I did kind of like Dregg. He just seemed spooky. I hate Mon or whatever his name was. HE was annoying. I liked Hi Tech. But I couldn't stand Carter

J Legault 07-12-2004 12:10 PM

You mean Mog?

cqb101 07-12-2004 12:20 PM

I like him....I still don't see why he got so much ****.

Kazari 07-12-2004 12:26 PM

Yeah it's probably Mog. Sorry! LOL Yeah I liked Dregg! I even liked Chronus and Titanus! LOL I love Red Sky much more than I did the old show.

Anarchistguy 07-12-2004 01:03 PM

Actually, his name is MUNG.

I too think fans hated dregg because they were too used to shredder and he replaced Shredder. Shredder was the turtles long time eneomy, like Dr. Claw with inspecter gadget and skeletor with he-man. I enjoyed shredder more because he had krang bebop and rocksteady. Dregg was just a darker villian. I only saw the unaired eps of dregg and he was more serious than shredder and krang and I thought his henchmen were more boring. I did not have as much taste in dregg as I did with shredder.

Deathknight 07-12-2004 01:41 PM

I didn't like Dregg because I didn't consider him to be a good villian not because he replaced Shredder. He was trying to conquer the Earth yet he didn't even participate in any of the assaults against it. Shredder didn't always fight against the turtles but he was always there trying to accomplish his goal. Dregg was too much of a watcher from the safety of the Dreggnaught. He also relied on mistrust from the people of Earth in season 9 rather than really being a villian. I found that to be just stupid.

Kazari 07-12-2004 02:57 PM

Yeah well at first I hated the mutations of Red Sky but there are a lot of eps that I really like for instance: Wrath of the Rat King, Cyber Turtles and Turtle Trek! Those were really good not to mention Get Shredder, Divide and Conquer, Cry HAVOC and HAVOC In the Streets, Mobster from Dimension X. I mean I did find some aspects that I hate with the old show. I always though Leonardo was very annoying since he was always whining about what "Splinter says." also Raphael was a wise cracker but he didn't have the anger problem. Honestly I like old show Don especially Red Sky Don better than new show Donatello. New Show don is too quiet. Old show and Red Sky Don got angry easier.

Aaron 07-12-2004 03:20 PM

I personaly preferred Krang and SHredder.

R-iZZy 07-12-2004 04:11 PM

Lord Dregg was cool, in my book.

Kazari 07-12-2004 04:13 PM

Yeah I got tired seeing Shredder. it was ALWAYS shredder. Sometimes I liked seeing someone new .

That Matt Guy 07-12-2004 04:18 PM

Basically he came in to the series when it was already losing fans, so it just made it worse in my opinion.

KROW 07-12-2004 04:56 PM

I thought Dregg was alright. Didn't really take to him, though. I preferred Shredder but I didn't mind Dregg. I just didn't like the fact that he stuck around so long. I was waiting for him to leave, die, or something so that Shredder and/or Krang could come back.

I did like his voice, though.

Kazari 07-12-2004 05:36 PM

I did like his plans though! I mean with the microbots and all! But the weird thing is that he seemed to die twice in the show! So it was very confusing! I remember one ep to where shredder and Dregg did work together. But Shredder seemed to change in Red Sky too! I mean it was a different voice actor and he didn't have that whole sarcastic to him as well! Plus Bebop and Rocksteady actually ACTED smart! LOL Dregg was cool but they needed more Shredder every once and awhile and get rid of Carter!!:P No Mutating either!

Coola Yagami 07-12-2004 07:19 PM

the thing is, after so many eps, they kinda fell into a trap. We were tired of shredder all the time, but then they put in some stupid scientist, it was like..'bring back the shredder!'. the other bad guys were also minor, Rat King wasn't really a 'take over the world' type and Leatherhead just wanted to beat people up and Baxter was more of a guest star than anything else.

maybe what they shoulda done is have Dregg as a new villian, but not THE villian kicking Shredder out. You know, make up other villians too so it wouldn't be Shredder all the time, but not Dregg all the time too. Kinda like Batman/Spiderman, where the TMNT would have a rogue's gallery, and they'd sometimes face Shredder, or Dregg, or Slash, or Rat King or HAVOK, etc, and not Shredder/Dregg all the time.

Kazari 07-12-2004 08:36 PM

Yeah like I said I didn't mind Medusa or Chronus! But that ep "The Showdown" so reminds me of Big Brawl it's not funny!:P

Spitfire 07-12-2004 09:35 PM

Lord Dregg is another attempt to have a bad ass space villian hesnot very exciting and hes just like everything we have already seen in the show. Hes cool sure but hes nothing special

Kazari 07-13-2004 08:39 AM

Well I think some of the eps with him were more exciting than Shredder in the old show. For instance I ALWAYS knew that the turtles were going to beat Shredder. Now the GET SHREDDER in Red Sky ep with Shredder is a different story. But the Red Sky ep where Dregg sucked the turtles' life force from them and they were dieing now that was pretty intense.

kyabetsu 07-13-2004 12:02 PM

he looked like a strung out heroine junkie-version of huckleberry hound... with a bad bad hat.

...that's why i could never take him seriously.

When Dregg scrolls around, check it out (sorry spitfire, yours was the only image of LDrg i could find online):

Kazari 07-13-2004 12:12 PM

Well for awhile I couldn't take old toon shredder too seriously either :P He sound wimpy sometimes and whining! LOL For some odd reason Shredder in ROTH new show ep reminded me of old show shredder by the way he was acting.

Kameko 07-13-2004 05:12 PM

Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that Dregg predates him by roughly a year, I'd be convinced he was just a sorry Lord Dragaunus (Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series) knockoff. I'm just not terribly impressed by him as a villain.

Kazari 07-13-2004 05:42 PM

Amazing though how it was Lord Dregg and now it's Lord Drako

Thats kool but theres a bunch in the screen caps topic in fact thats where I got the pics for my sig
http://img73.photobucket.com/albums/.../dreggfull.jpg

Kazari 07-13-2004 06:42 PM

Dregg was cool for awhile yes! I NEVER found him annoying but I mean after awhile he got to the point like old show Shredder to where all he wanted to do was kill the turtles and that's it though I mean some of his schemes were pretty intense! Like in the new show like I said even Shredder is becoming this way. At first he was trying to get at the utroms and take over the world but like in ROTH all he talked about was going after the turtles.

Eye of Sarnath 07-13-2004 07:11 PM

Dregg just doesn't look as cool as Shredder. That aside, he really was a better villian than Shredder when you think about it... I mean, he actually posed a threat to the TMNT.

Kazari 07-13-2004 07:25 PM

Yeah Shredder was hilarious while Dregg was more serious. Yeah but Dregg did pose more of a threat to the turtles than Shredder and Krang. For some reason you just knew that the turtles would always beat shredhead.

Spitfire 07-13-2004 08:23 PM

The old show was a comdey so there was no room for a serious character

Kazari 07-13-2004 08:39 PM

Well Shredder in the first what 3 episodes was pretty serious I think!

That is not a bad idea of having the rouge's gallery, they should have done that in season 9 and 10. Well I think that the random villian thing like sopho, lloyd pysclod (the scientist from donatello makes time), Talbot Breach (the captain shrinking ships) and tempester were kind of having the batman/spiderman thing. I LOVE YOUR IDEA ALOT. I didn't mind shredder all the time because of bebop and rocksteady's foolish antics were interesting. Doing that could have brought the show up until now, but maybe not since interest was starting to wane in 1992.

Drtooth 07-21-2004 09:59 AM

I really gotta say, why I hate Dregg? He was too bland, and he was unappealing as a villain. He was too evil. He just did warmed over "Darth Vader" schtick. I mean, the writing did get a bit better (compaired to the seasons just before the change, throwing in random Mutants in to sell action figures) but the over all stereotypical evil of Dregg and the "Out of control" Mutations just drug the show down.

I mean, I liked the darker, grittier type of feel, but the magic died along with Shredder and Krang for me. As soon as Carter came in, I gave up watching....

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy 07-21-2004 11:37 AM

It looks like more people are negative about Dregg, despite that he was suppoesed to a "big-hitter" main villain to ease the somewhat on-going and out of steam adventures against Krang and Shredder.

Despite my lack of knowledge of the later season, i did see some episodes from the '95 or '96 Season a few years ago on a German Channel. I was surprised to see completely new enemies including Dregg. Sadly, i couldn't understand most of the German, and didn't have a clue what was going on. I've never heard Dregg's English voice-over, but would like to,as voice's do sometimes make or break a villain's reputation.

However, i like the sound of the guy if he's suppoesed to be darker than Shredder. :D

I didn't vote in the poll because of that.

Maybe, one reason why most people don't like him because Dregg came so late on in the cartoon. You got so used to Shredder and Krang and liked them from the start. And if you started watching the cartoon in the 80s ( and remember seeing it!), maybe by 1995, you were in your teenage years or late childhood and at that age you could be more critical of what new is put into you're loved programmes. Or you weren't easy to please anymore.

Or then again, maybe he just sucked. And i can't be the judge of that!

Drtooth 07-21-2004 11:53 AM

Hmmmm... those are valid points. Maybe it's how I slightly feel about it.
Personally, I liked the writing, but by the last season that version of TMNT ran out of steam. Plus, the Mutating Leonardo thing was pointless...

But I would have to agree, he's EXACTLY like the guy from Mghty ducks... probably because it's the same voice actor.

Plus, Mung was pretty annoying, and he looked like a bad ripoff of a character from "The Dark Crystal" (in animation form) with coat hanger hooks coming out of his head.

I think the only reason why Krang and Shredder were successful is they had weird personalities, and they had character flaws that made them funny at points. But Dreg was just pure evil with the stereotypical "Hell bent on thatking over the world" personality seen on way to many other cartoons at this point.

Kazari 07-21-2004 12:33 PM

I really liked Dregg. True he did get annoying but so did Shredder after awhile! I really liked the HAVOC Mutants myself.

I agree in that people were so used to Shredder it was hard to accept the new bad guy.

I think I stopped watching that show when James Avery stopped being the voice for Shredder. It was like Shredders very soul was taken from the show.

le sigh.

I try to hear Shredders voice in Uncle Phil, but it just isn't happening.

Serp 07-21-2004 05:55 PM

I think Dregg was Okay but it was sort of too much of the same thing. I like Coola Yagami's Idea about the Rogue Gallery think that would have worked.

I can very much so hear uncle Phil's voice in the Shredder.
