Early Shredder Toy...topless?

I remember scanning for Turtle figures in 1989 or 1990, when the first Turtle figures came out for the cartoon. I was confused why Shredder had a pinky-purple cape on top, but apart from that he was topless. Why was that?

He had a grey top on in the cartoon. :-?

Ryona 07-21-2004 02:31 PM

Yeah, that was pretty weird although as a little kid at the time, I didn't really care. I think his look was inspired by the "Return to New York" saga. Shredder was topless in those comics....though he took off all his armour too....

rayfillet101 07-21-2004 02:34 PM

yea that was the onky shredder I had back then and I always thought he looked Puny. I never really liked it. Plus his head was rubber!

MrPliggins 07-21-2004 05:52 PM

That Shredder came out way before "Return to New York".. I think they were on around issue #12 or 13 when the cartoon and toys started coming out...

I used to think it was weird too, he looks like such a wimp too. And he's got a big head.

KROW 07-21-2004 06:05 PM

He also had a werid body structure. His back was arched like an old man, and the only stance you could pose him in looks like he got done pitching a baseball or something.

It's cool, dude! I think a Shredder based on Return to New York should be MUCH cooler though...

Yeah, even as a little kid I knew there was something wrong with that. After the second TMNT movie came out I just started using the Super Shredder toy for playing Turtles.

DrSpengler 07-22-2004 01:34 PM

I had a topless Shredder toy back in the day. Then my mom gave him away. Then I bought another off of eBay last month.

Damn, he is fuglier than I remember him being. The lack of a shirt isn't what bugs me, it's his legs. I can't make him stand for the life of me. I had to prop him up in kind of a corner. He looks like he's blowing kisses or something.

Spitfire 07-22-2004 03:25 PM

I have that Shredder hes awesome. Just very short. Hes supposed to be taller then the turtles and in that hunched over postion hes actually shorter then the turtles

KROW 07-22-2004 07:13 PM

Yeah. I think he's shorter than Splinter, too.

BigApple3AM 07-24-2004 06:11 PM

Someone explained this a long time ago I think, not sure who though. They said something like to fit shredder in the packaging they had to make him smaller, and they didn't want him to be the same size as the turtles so the sculptors made him hunching over like that. Why he's topless I don't know. Maybe he likes the turtles to check out his man-boobs?

KROW 07-24-2004 06:14 PM

"Man-boobs"?
Maybe. Or maybe they wanted them to see his spinal cord. Blech!

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy 07-25-2004 05:10 AM

Ah, you've reminded me now! I do remember that Shredder's back was arched inside the packaging!

I never got that shredder toy though, because when i was given the chance to buy a TMNT figure, it was the Turtle's i bought first.

It wasn't until 1993 i got a shredder toy, the one where shredder can transform to Oroku Saki without the helmet and in the blue Traditional Japanese clothing. I liked it, however it was quite awkard he wasn't very flexible, and the colour of his helmut is scraped by squashing it away inside his back.

Shreddatron 07-25-2004 11:18 AM

Does anyone have a close up pic of Oroko Saki's head from the original Mutatin Shredder figure without the helmet on?

azure turtle 07-26-2004 12:26 AM

LOL! I enjoyed reading everyone's fond memories of "topless Shredder."

I always got frustrated that the dude couldn't stand on his own feet, and I never liked the pose he was in. I used to give up and just let him lie on the floor, and I'd pretend that the turtles had already defeated him.

Krutch 07-26-2004 12:29 AM

any pics?

Skabbz 07-26-2004 12:36 AM

whut do u want pics of? the topless shredder? its the original shedder from the 1st wave from 98..

Karai 07-26-2004 10:31 AM

Topless Shredder toy, circa 1988
I wish I still had my original, I'd take a better picture of it. I think we may have lost the cape, so you could have gotten a better idea of what kind of deformities they gave him - apparently for packaging purposes as I've read here.

 !!! That is freakin' hilarious.

I didn't liken the blue and purple that Shredder wore. That figure is terrible...you can barely pose him at all. I recently bought that figure, I showed it to my friend who noticed all the purple and said "Since when has Shredder been a gay icon?"

KROW 07-26-2004 06:01 PM

Heh. Well, he DID say at one time, "It feels so good to be so bad."

How is that gay? Just wondering, did like some gay guy say that, cuz I really don't see anything gay with it. Could I say gay any more times than I already have?

Anyway, that's like one of my favorite shredder quotes, not really what he said, but the way he said it. It's like he was talking right after he took a really huge dump or something.

Leonardo_the_sword_master 07-26-2004 07:54 PM

shredder is RADICLEY AWESOME in a purple cape.

It was just the way he said it, IMO. Hmmm. It sounds gay to me, but it sounds like rectal relief to you.

BigApple3AM 07-26-2004 09:36 PM

rectal relief and gay people, they go hand in hand don't they?

Alright I hope this thread doesn't get locked for that.

KROW 07-26-2004 09:40 PM

Just remember: You said it, not me.

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy 07-27-2004 04:06 AM

OK, we're going a bit too far here.

Anyway, the original tmnt toys like the Shredder toy, but they definetely weren't the best quality out there at the time.

Their weapons looked cheap, were all brown and you had to dissect each weapon which were merged together.

However, my turtle figures have remained intact for years with still no stiff movment in the legs.

Zachatello00 07-27-2004 08:50 AM

I gotta tell you, the non-toon accurate Topless Shredder has always bothered me. So I went a different route. He's hard to find and expensive on ebay, I was lucky to find mine unadvertised in a giant lot, but Toon Shredder is a much cooler figure IMO than the original Shredder. He's the same figure, but with different paint to match the cartoon. See the shredder in the picture below. Another thing that bothered me about the old shredder was that the eyebrows were on his helmet, and they didn't paint that part of the helmet in. They sort of fixed that on the Toon Shredder. They still had the eyebrows up there, but at least they color in the helmet behind him.

Toon Shredder! Good call, he looks just like the Shredder on the cartoon... imagine that. :embarass:

AWESOMLY COOL DUDE, you have Krang and an old foot ninja, COOL I REALLY WANT KRANG AND A FOOT SOLDIER.

Zachatello00 07-27-2004 10:56 AM

Thanks for the compliments you guys. Fellow Member Kunoichi181 helped me out with Krang, and my wife bought me almost everyone else for Christmas, as I posted in a seprate thread. I only had Rocksteady and Baxter, and Shredder before she got me those. It was nice.

The only thing that is a little different from Toon Shredder and cartoon Shredder that I've been able to spot is that he doesn't have that strange groin flap. Not a big deal though.

DrSpengler 07-27-2004 08:54 PM

That Shredder toy is actually really cool looking. I have an original Shredder figure from Series 1 and my god is it fugly. I'd love to get my hands on one of those.

Emmanuel Cruz 08-04-2004 10:20 PM

Man, almost all my old TMNT figures are gone. :( But I fondly remember the topless Shredder as a kid. I hated the way he stood and without a shirt, he weirded me out when I was little.

SO Many Fond Memories! :D
