What are you reading... Now...

I'm in the middle of a cluster-buster of books:

High Fidelity - Scary good, considering its written how men think....
A Brief History Of Time - Stephen Hawking, baby
A Prayer For Owen Meany - Hahaha, Simon Birch.
War Of The Worlds - So...wait...Tom who?

One of the worst books I've ever read. Usually the book is better than the movie, and this time the movie was way better than the book.

Great book.

What am I reading?
  • Outsiders (the most recent issue): mindboggling, Brainiac
  • This thread: sort of new
  • "Media Control" - Noam Chomsky: Great book about how media influences us
  • "Winterkrieg in Tibet" - Friedrich Dürrenmatt: Dead boring and very comlicated, but I have to read it.

damnhooligan 06-22-2005 09:23 AM

"In Praise of Nepotism" by Adam Bellow, historical non-fiction about family enterprises.

I'm one of those folks that reads one book at a time, but I usually plow through them within a couple days or so. And thanks for reminding me that I really need to throw down a couple hundred bucks on new reading material.

KROW 06-22-2005 10:03 AM

"The Cleric Quintet" by R.A. Salvatore, a collection of five novels about a cleric named Cadderly and his friends Danica and two dwarves named Ivan and Pikel Bouldershoulder. It's over 1,000 pages long and it's very good.

Brodie 06-22-2005 10:03 AM

I disagree about High Fidelity being bad, I read a lot, and it reads way better than a lot of stephen king books. I just like the first person view into a dude's psyche who thinks an awful lot like every man ever.

Just something I can relate to.

It's a lot like Chuck Palahniuks work, just less prolific and masochistic.

I just finished Palahniuk's 'Haunted'm and have Invisible Monsters to read too.

malignant 06-22-2005 12:31 PM

I just got done reading The War of the Worlds......yeah, great book.

Currently reading - Deep Freeze.

raphael_is_cool 06-22-2005 12:56 PM

Currently reading:

The Bourne Supremacy by Robert Ludlum
Blast from the Past by Ben Elton

My comic shop restocked it's back issues of Swamp Thing volume 2 (virtually the entire series) and I've been scrambling to read them as fast as I can (before other people start buying them).

I've been reading about 15 issues a week and I'm at #80 right now. God damn, these are comic books at their finest.

tekcop 06-26-2005 12:44 AM

Indeed they are. I started "Quintet" after filling my head with all the awesome Drizzt adventures, which took a good chunk of time. After this I intend to read Salvatore's "The Highwayman."

My present book - Joris-Karl Huysmans - "Against the Grain" aka "A rebours".

DrSpengler 07-14-2005 03:50 PM

Just picked up some reprints of the old EC Tales From the Crypt comics. Good stuff.

verminator_x 07-14-2005 04:31 PM

yup the bahnhof zoo.

Anarky 07-14-2005 04:46 PM

"Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo - Christiane F." is an awesome book. Sort of makes you really sad, but yet lets you cheer for Christiane.

Did you know that she was an actress for a while and is currently living off social aid. Kind of sad...

verminator_x 07-14-2005 05:12 PM

no, i didnt. that is sad, i mean after all the movie and the book of her life, was a big commercial sucsess. she must be at least in her late 40s now.

the music soundtrack from the movie is beautiful and sad, i like the part when david bowie steps in. he lived in berlin at the same time, and the albums low and heroes were inspired by the book about christiane f.

did not know that she was an actress, well she was very pretty so i could understand.

Anarky 07-14-2005 05:47 PM

I found her IMDB-entry and this picture of her. She really was pretty. Everyone should read that book, it's really good.

verminator_x 07-14-2005 05:54 PM

she looks like an angel, she is today 45 years old or 46.
her boy friend or best friend detlef does anyone know if he still alive.

the book should be school material, everyone in the ages of 13 and up, and who goes to school must read it.

Anarky 07-14-2005 05:57 PM

And Babsi (Babette D.) was actually the daughter of a very famous pianist as well as the youngest drug victim of Berlin.

And there are way worse pictures of her... especially the ones from the time depicted in the book.

Detlef is currently living in Berlin, works as a mailman for parcels, has wife and children and has been clean for a very long time.

Have you seen the movie too?

EDIT: That is her today. 43 years old, living in Berlin Spandau.

EDIT 2: And the actress who played Christane F. in the movie was probably the best casting-thing German moviemakers ever made.

verminator_x 07-14-2005 06:37 PM

seen the movie just once, but i have read the book at least 10 times.
thanks for the info, havent seen any new photos of christiane.
its nice to hear that things has gone well with detlef.

I use to be scared of the crypt keeper that would pop up in the beginning of Tales from the Crypt on HBO. Good show after I started not running away everytime the show began. lol

I just found a weird site to TOTC http://www.geocities.com/imb210/

Talking about Detlef. He says that his relationship with Christiane was a pure drug-relationship, no love involved. He's probably right...

Zachatello00 07-15-2005 11:06 PM

I'm reading the Revenge of the Sith novel. It supplements the movie very well, making it even better.

cowabunga14 07-23-2005 01:26 PM

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Artobiography by Kevin Eastman-This is my second time readin' the book. Its intrestin' to see Kevin's concept sketches and other various artwork. The thumbnails really get my attention. Its intrestin' to see what Peter and Kevin had to do for the process of makin' a comic book.

The Tonuge: A Creative Force by Charles Capps-This is a very profound book. I like the biblical nature of it. The Scriptures in the book really go with what a particular chapter is about.

Ok comic books:
Army of Darkness
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Spider-Man
X-Men

KROW 07-23-2005 02:18 PM

I recently took a break from my R.A. Salvatore novel to read the TPB collection of DC Comics' Space Ghost. Holy Hell, was that a good read. Dark, brooding, entertaining. The story was well in its place and the art was excellent; a perfect follow for Alex Ross' cover pieces.

A very nice breather from my usual epic reads.

cowabunga14 07-23-2005 05:56 PM

I also readin' The Journey Home by Edward Abbey. That's a great book. I really like how Abbey describes his experince in the west. He travels to various west coast states and he's tryin' to get to Home, Pennsylvania. I don't wanna give too much away. A comic book I forgot to list is Marvel Milestones. That's a great one. I like how the classic comics that are collected in there are ones that I don't have. It was intrestin' to read about Spider-Man's black costume and Iron Man's origin.

Raphael29 07-24-2005 01:39 AM

That would be Star Wars : Revenge of the Sith for the 3rd time.

Very good choice!

JaffleMan 07-24-2005 06:38 AM

Just starting reading the dark tower series by Stephen King. Midway through the second book.

Brodie 08-03-2005 03:09 PM

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass.

Weird as hell.

Mandi-chan 08-03-2005 05:05 PM

Right now I'm reading:

War of the Worlds (loving it, but like the 2005 movie a littl bit better)

Crimson City (interesting futuristic story about vamps, were-wolves, and humans sharing the city of Angles!)
