TMNT Name Abriviations

OK, I was sitting around watching my OT TMNT DVDs and I noticed something. The guys never used the whole Leo, Don, Raph, Mikey name abriviations. In the 1st 2 seasons, I didn't notice any times those names were used. They are used in the movies, and the new toon, and posibily the Archie comics. But what is regarded by most as the most silly and kid oriented version of the green team, they call eachother by their full names....comments?

Weapon X 08-12-2005 10:10 PM

Well it's bean a long time since I've seen the other seasons, but I really don't remember them ever being said.

XERO 08-12-2005 10:13 PM

Well, Raph abbreviated Donatello's name once in Hot Rodding Teenagers from Dimension X.

'Book 'em, Don-O!' :P

Weapon X 08-12-2005 10:16 PM

Wise guy ehh.

Jester 08-12-2005 10:17 PM

That's a pop culture refrence...but it may count....:P

Maybe to keep younger kids from getting confused. Or to score points with parents-- your kids sound smart saying stuff like "Michelangelo" and "Donatello."

Yea if anything it would easier to remember....i mean the names are alot shorter and they dont end in "o" for the most part...

It was probably to make the TMNT more unique and memorable at a time when the only ones who knew of the TMNT were from the comic community in the 80's.

Think about it. "Mikey" could be so many other characters out there. Now "Michaelangelo" is unique and when people hear it, they think of either the painter or the turtle.

Now that the TMNT are so popular and well known, many people will match up "Mikey" with our beloved ninja Michelangelo.

I noticed that too when I bought the DVDs. It's interesting...makes them sound kinda formal haha. I like the way the abbrs were used in the movies... Leo, Mikey, Don (with an occasional Donny) and Raph. I hate in the new series (and I think some of the comics?) that they call Raph, Raphie.... he's just NOT a Raphie to me.... he's too macho for that! ;p

Jester 08-13-2005 05:11 PM

That's exactly why they call him Raphie...it's kinda a barb...:p

Space Lieutenant Josh 08-13-2005 05:21 PM

I meant it would be confusing if they used both names. Like if they called Mike "Mikey" sometimes, and "Michelangelo" other times, with "Mike" thrown in for good measure. Granted, most kids would be able to figure these little things out, but the really young ones might not get it.

Thats a good point but I don't think they were thinking that far down the line...I mean, if they knew how HUGE the tmnt would turn out to be, I wonder if they would've made the same decisions they did...you never..hindsight is 20/20... but again, good point.. :)

MrPliggins 08-13-2005 09:04 PM

There was one time , in the episode "Usagi Yojimbo", where Michaelangelo was going to fight the foot soldiers and Donatello said something like "Forget it, Mikey. Our friend Usagi's already taken care of it."

Buslady 08-13-2005 09:40 PM

That's one thing I didn't care for the old show...they never were a family.Family members call each other by shortened names or nicknames.

Splinter even referred to the turtles as HIS FRIENDS...not his sons. That was just wrong.

I call em Mike,Raph,Leo and Donnie. Ya know it's like they're part of my family in a way. I dunno...im wierd.

Weapon X 08-13-2005 09:41 PM

But no matter what I always think of them as brothers and Splinter their "Father".

XERO 08-13-2005 09:48 PM

They were always family.

Do you consider some of your friends family? :)

Not really.

Jester 08-13-2005 09:53 PM

I've heard "My friends" and students but never sons in the OT

Jo Dawn 08-13-2005 09:54 PM

Yep. Splinter reffered to them as his friends, as introduces them that way also. That always bugged me, too... ;) :P

XERO 08-13-2005 09:54 PM

He said 'sons' in the first season, I'm sure of it.

And X, you ruined my post. :P

Jester 08-13-2005 09:57 PM

I'm pretty sure he never did, Benny....as much as I hate to contradict the 5th turtle.

Weapon X 08-13-2005 09:59 PM

He also called them "My four young wards".

Jester 08-13-2005 10:01 PM

Batman conotations....:P EWWWWWW!

XERO 08-13-2005 10:01 PM

No, he did.

Trust me. ;)

XERO 08-13-2005 10:12 PM

Mark my words, everybody.

Splinter did call them 'sons' in the old toon.

Jester 08-13-2005 10:13 PM

*shrugs* I'm prettys sure he doesn't Ben. It's soemthing you'd remember...

XERO 08-13-2005 10:17 PM

Watch Enter the Shredder.

You'll see. ;)

Ryona 08-13-2005 10:23 PM

I agree with Ben. I do remember him calling them "sons" a few times as well as "friends".

Kinda odd to call them one and the other if you ask me... :ohwell:

Jester 08-13-2005 10:24 PM

Ok....
Head upwards, my sons, I'll try to find a way around all this.

XERO 08-13-2005 10:26 PM

I told ya. :D

Weapon X 08-13-2005 10:26 PM

It's obviouse he had to say it atleast once.

Coming from a guy who recites episodes, it was a matter of time. :D

Jester 08-13-2005 10:35 PM

As soon as I read "Enter the Shredder" that line ran through my head....but that's once....Like Don-o....
