Doom still hates his PS2 (Help! T_T )

It's been no secret around here that my PS2 has been broken for quite some time now. The dreaded "Disc Read Error" problem. It plays PS1 games fine, but refuses to read PS2 discs or DVDs. I had a hankerin' to play some Smackdown vs Raw, so I decided to crack the sucker open and follow the instruictions on THIS PAGE. The very same web site helped my brother repair his, after all. So, I go through all the steps (minus the canned air bit), and I still have no results. I thought I'd run it by the drome one more time to see if anyone has any suggestions.

Barkworm 09-12-2005 03:40 AM

I had the same problem with the DVD drive on my PC. It played CDs but no DVDs. Turned out that the DVD laser was broken so I sent it to hell.

The Stryker 09-12-2005 04:03 AM

The Drive on the PS2 wears out and canned air ain't gonna fix it. the best bet is to replace the whole thing or get a new PS2

Far as i know...and im an idiot

BartAllen 09-12-2005 04:07 AM

I know this isnt going to help, but i remember hearing this about a year after the PS2 originally came out, that the PS2s had problems reading discs. and that they would eventually stop working, but luckily that problem was fixed with the later releases of the system. so.. your best bet is to just go and buy a new PS2.

Dr. Doom 09-12-2005 04:47 AM

And I totally would if I had the money to. Thsu why I'm trying to salvage this one.

Spitfire 09-12-2005 07:17 AM

The first time I sent it in for repairs. The 2nd time I opened it and cleaned it and it worked like it was brand new. It even loaded games faster. Maybe you should do the canned air part. I did it by hand though. I used paper towels and windex. I opened up every little part unscrewed and removed everything*Putting it back as I did it* and by the time I was done it was all clean and working nicely. It was caked with dust inside. No idea why I took good care of it. Anyways hope that helps because that got rid of my diskread error.

I should try the compressed air thing. because on the outside my ps2 looks brand new. im scared to crack it open.

ThirdMarioBro 09-12-2005 02:15 PM

I saw someone try compressed air on a Dreamcast because they were scared to open it, and all they did was bend a transistor out of shape thus killing the system. It's better to just open your PS2. It's probobly a more delicate system inside, so opening it would be the healthier option in the long run. Those compressed air things are risky.

Btw, I cracked open my Dreamcast and cleaned the power supply and all was well. The same, or a similar problem might be wrong with your PS2. Sometimes the lazers just get caked wth dust.

愛 09-12-2005 02:29 PM

I opened up my PS2 in an attempt to fix my read error problem, and I broke off a circuit that was part of the power cord! YEAH!

....then I had to buy a new PS2.

jeff the cheff 09-12-2005 02:36 PM

SEND IT IN!!! Call sony and tell them your problem and they will tell you what to do. I had the DRE so I called them up, and they instructed me to send it in for repairs. They fixed it for free!! So DON'T buy another PS2

Maybe that has something to do with each household in Japan housing 2 PS2s? o.O.

Lie everyone's been saying, your best bet is to just open it and clean it up. If it dies, well hey... you needed a new one anyway, right?

zkarlette 09-12-2005 03:30 PM

I think you should just clean it with the compressed air if that doesnt work send it in to sony , but dont open it, at least the air and a damp cloth worked for me it doesnt give me any trouble now

Dr. Doom 09-12-2005 05:22 PM

yeah, well, sony isn't gonna touch the thing now, cause I've already opened it, and there's a weird lil sticker on it that you have to break to open it up. And that voids the warranty. Not that I've had one for the last 4 years.

Spitfire 09-12-2005 05:25 PM

Please tell us how cleaning it went ^_^

Dr. Doom 09-12-2005 10:16 PM

Ohmyf**kinggodmyps2works

Edit: and I just dropped one of those tiny ass screws INSIDE the PS2 T_T

Kid Icarus 09-12-2005 10:42 PM

Psh, there's plenty of other things floating around in there that one screw won't make a diffrence.

Unless, of course, it gets jamed in the motor... in that case, you'll have a problem.

Well, it ain't comin' out any time soon. It's way in there. So I just hafta treat my PS2 like it's made outta toothpicks (it may as well be).

Actually, when I first opened it up, I found a peice of the Bloody Raor 3 disc inside. I then recalled when I rented it from blockbuster and my PS@ like ate part of it. I brought it back and said taht's how I got it, lol.

Kid Icarus 09-12-2005 10:59 PM

Oooooohhhhhh, it all makes sense now...

Clearly, your PS2's posessed.

Spitfire 09-12-2005 11:02 PM

Good cleaning it worked ^^ I lost a screw when I cleaned mine too dont worry about it haha. Great that it works! Now game on O_O

Jesus Christ, that thing really is a piece of sh8t.

Dr. Doom 09-13-2005 05:01 PM

Well now it's a peice of sh*t with a screw inside that works. So I'm happy.

OA 09-13-2005 08:23 PM

ahhh...a happy ending... :)

Dr. Doom 09-14-2005 05:41 PM

For now o_o;;

Brodie 09-14-2005 05:50 PM

Doom still hates his PS2,
And Brodie still hates Doom.

Dr. Doom 11-13-2005 10:25 AM

that peice of **** just broke the **** down again

Barkworm 11-13-2005 10:35 AM

What's with all those broken PS2s? We've had ours for more than three years and we never had any problems with it. What are you doing to your PS2s anyway? :p

Dr. Doom 11-13-2005 10:37 AM

Playing. That's about it.

I give up. I'm buying a new one.

Duke 01-16-2006 02:19 PM

Well mine finally broke. I had only ever had problems with one game and I just assumed it was the game and not the system but now all I can play is PS1 games. Also from some reason my old ps2 games that pre-date 2002 still work. It almost seems like sony changed their ps2 discs around then just so I would eventually be forced to buy a new one. I'm going to try opening it up, and cleaning it. If that doesn't work I'm getting one of the new flat ones. I hate sony.

ThirdMarioBro 01-16-2006 03:26 PM

That thing is such a shoddly built piece of sh*t. Gamecube and Xbox are such tanks in comparison.

Dr. Doom 01-16-2006 03:28 PM

Mine's been working suprubly since the last time I cleaned it off. I'd still like to get a new one tho, I dunno how long this one will hold together.

Peanut 01-16-2006 03:28 PM

I've actually had two of each console this generation. Xbox, PS2 and even Gamecube. It's quite sad really. My second PS2 is nearing it's end though, I can tell. You'd think the 2 year break would do it some good. lol. I might get a new slim PS2 eventually.

Funny. I've had my PS2 pretty much since it came out, and I've already gone through a second GC and XBOX.

愛 01-16-2006 03:48 PM

I've never had to replace GC or Xbox, but the PS2 replacement was my fault. I had to try and play 1337 h4x0r and open it up to clean the inside. :(

Dr. Doom 01-16-2006 04:10 PM

Does that mean that I'm 1337 cause I did that and it works?

Jo Dawn 01-16-2006 04:45 PM

Hmm... Glad it worked for ya again! :)

And, we've had the PS2 since the day it came out (and Gamecube and XBox and 360) and we've not had a problem with any of them. Never needed to replace one. And yes, we DO play them... alot. Hmm... What CAN you boys be doing to your toys. ;) :P

malignant 01-16-2006 04:52 PM

Iv'e never had a system break on me either. EVER. Hell even my 8 Bit nintendo still works perfectly....lol..

But yeah, when it comes to Playstation 2. I know lots of friends whos been through alot of them. Sony just doesnt know quality.

Duke 01-16-2006 05:44 PM

Well I opened up my ps2 and cleaned it and so far its worked pretty good. The first time I tried a game I got the disc read error but since then every game I've tried has loaded perfectly on the first attempted. Although i still really do need a new one.

Depends on which wave you buy. The first wave Xboxes were pieces of **** (and the 360's, stupuid pieces of junk). Every first wave console has kinks, bugs and other types of lousy crap to it, thats another reason why its nonsensical to buy a first wave console.

Everyone should play games on PC.

pwnage 01-16-2006 07:40 PM

Emulators, nubby. Emulators. :)

Plus the variety of games on PC is so much more expansive than the selection of console games.
