Next Gen Consoles: Price Time! Here's my opinion

The XBox 360 is available in 2 version: Core $299.99 and Premium for $399.99

The PlayStation 3 is going to be available in 2 versions as well. One of them will be $499.99 and the other will be $599.99

The Nintendo Wii will be $199.99

Here's my oppinion: Buy an XBox 360 and a Nintedno Wii. Together they cost as much as 1 Playstation 3 at $600. I would think peiople would want 2 cool systems for the price of what PS3 will cost. I love the PlayStation 2, and Playstation 3 looks great, but I just don't want to pay that much for a console. Anyways, I already have an XBox 360, so next for me will be the Nintendo Wii. I also think the games are better for 360 and Wii.

Barkworm 05-14-2006 03:40 PM

That's pretty much what Peter Moore said a couple of days ago. I want all three of them but I am not willing to pay more than 300 for each.

Peanut 05-14-2006 04:01 PM

As much as I hate Sony, I'd probably still buy the PS3 at some point down the road, but until it drops about...$400 I'm not touching it. I'd be willing to pay the same price as a 360 for one...if it didn't have a completely awful list of upcoming games.

Ecto Jedi 05-14-2006 04:19 PM

Hehe, as easy as it would be to jump on the bandwagon and start bashing Sony for their recent choices, we must have faith in the venerable company and their decisions. Remember, this is the company that has had a stranglehold on the gaming market for the past five years, the company that created the dominant console of the 128-bit era, and the home of Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear Solid. Sure, at the moment $600 dollars is looking like an awful lot to drop on a console -- but better graphics, improved controllers and PSP/PS3 connectivity is worth the price, no?

Barkworm 05-14-2006 04:27 PM

I think you picked the wrong forum, this is Sony hater central.
Seriously though, the PS3 is looking pretty crappy so far (except for MGS4). Nevertheless there are many franchises I love that will be PS3 exclusive so some time in a very distant future I will get myself one.
BTW did anyone read that interview with id Soft's John Carmack? He said that the PS3 was indeed more powerful than the 360 but it wouldn't make a difference because the thing is so hard to program for.

Mecha Cow 05-14-2006 04:28 PM

Faith in what? That they'll remain industry leader for another generation? Is there anyone who actually wants that?

Not saying that it won't happen, because it will.

Barkworm 05-14-2006 04:33 PM

I honestly don't believe that there are enough idiots who are willing to spend $600 on a console. Just look what happened when the XBOX was released in Europe. The freaking thing costed 480 bucks (!!!!!!!) and the price was dropped to 300 in a blink.

Now why would you want Sony to fail and drop from the top of the gaming industry?

I can understand that the PS3 may not be your preferred console, and that you might be more inclined to purchase a Wii or XBox 360. But why all the hate? If you don't want to pay $600, then don't. Appreciate all the healthy competition between the consoles and play what you like.

Amen to that. Competition = More great games.

Kid Icarus 05-14-2006 05:07 PM

One correction real quick... no price for Wii has been announced. Sure, it's expected to be $199.99, but I could see it going from anywhere between $149.99 to $249.99.

And you've also got to take into consideration the cost of owning each machine... PS3 and 360 demand to be played on HD sets to get the most from the hardware inside, and their games are pretty expensive.

Honestly though, I'll be buying a new TV for Wii. I want a widescreen that can run the games in progressive scan.

Ah, but this is dirty scummy competition that basicaly comes down to "mine's bigger then yours! lolz!"

It's stupid, really. It should be all about the *games*, instead of companies focusing so much on stupid hardware specs, useless features, and a possibly crappy control system.

Oh, and Playstation isn't home to Grand Theft Auto anymore. Hate to break it to ya, but 360 is gettng 4 the day it comes out, and PC's have had GTA for some time now (hell, I can get 3, Vice City, and San Andreas for around 10 bucks each for PC, and I bet they'd run smoother then on PS2). Of course, PS3 will still get the GTA series, but it's not exclusive anymore.

Hideo Kojima, the guy behind Metal Gear Solid, is in love with Wii... should be apparent from him wanting Snake in the new Smash Bros.

ThirdMarioBro 05-14-2006 05:18 PM

I think Nintnedo is trying to imply that the price is $199 so that Microsoft won't drop their price this Christmas, and then Nintendo can launch at something more along the price of $175 or something.

Barkworm 05-14-2006 05:19 PM

Sometimes I think Kojima hates making Metal Gear Solid. I mean he even said that he wished he could quit MGS4 to make his Wii game!

ThirdMarioBro 05-14-2006 05:23 PM

He does. He said he hates that Konami basically forced him to do 4, and thats why he's making sure that it will be the final game in the series.

Why, thanks for "breaking it to me," Gwgtrunks. Fascinating, really.

In any event, I just thought I'd throw in a minor detail here; while the $600 price tag will in all probability alienate more than a few gamers from purchasing Sony's brand-new console, six hundred bananas is actually an incredible bargain considering the PlayStation 3's specs. Downloadable games and features (from a free online service), greater EyeToy compatibility, PSP/PS3 connectivity, incredible graphics, a highly advanced "Cell" processor, a top-of-the-line Blu-Ray disc player, and -- let's not forget -- great games.

$600 bucks a pop? Expensive, yes, but not so much when you consider that a stand-alone Blu-Ray player will put you back about $1,000.

As long as he delivers quality (and he always does) he can hate whatever he want. And man, I'd love it if this was the last game. Nothing better than a wrapped up story!

I wasn't going to respond again to this thread... but now I have this need to seeing as I was directly pointed out in your response.

Specs don't make a machine, it's the developers that do. Good specs don't make good games. The PS3 and 360, while very impressive peices of technology, don't allow for much more to be done with game design then we've been seeing for the past TEN years.

Eye Toy is more gimmicky then anything Nintendo has ever made. There. I said it. It's true, it really is. My webcam, of six years, can run the same games Eye Toy can... again, six years ago.

Free online service was done last year by Nintendo. Sure, while not the best, it's free, it works, and developers have the freedom to do whatever they want with it. They can even charge if they feel like it.

Graphics are nice, but they're going to loose their 'wow' within a year. Next, plzkthx.

Now, how can Sony afford to give you a 'top of the line' blu-ray player in a PS3 when their top of the line supposedly sells for around $1,000? They can't. It's going to be just like the DVD playback in PS2, crap. Yeah, it'll play. Yeah, it'll have standard features. But is it going to work well? Hell no. You're also assuming that Blu-ray's going to become the standard for movies.

Back to the PS3 and development... that aweosme Cell processor actually makes it even HARDER to make games for. PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube were already hard machines to program, and apparently develoment costs are rising by tens of MILLIONS because system makers feel the need to have everything higher then it needs. You're never going to see anyone take full advantage of the PS3 hardware just because of the sheer difficulty of even getting stuff to *run* on the damn thing.

And you surely mean great *game* right? Metal Gear Solid 4 is about the only thing I see people really wanting that's exclusive to PS3. Final Fantasy'll make it's way over to 360 eventually, I'm sure and everything else is a multi platform game. Whooh.

This covers all the points I feel I needed to make about PS3. Now, I'm not going to come back into this thread and post, unless I'm attacked again. K, thx, bye.

No, it isn't a bargin. It's far from a bargin. Downloadable games and features is available on ALL platformers. I don't know where you heard it would be free, either. EyeToy is a worthless gimmick. PSP/PS3 connectivity is another cheese gimmick that'll be used even less than the GBA/GCN connectivity was used. The graphics aren't going to be that much better than 360's, if developers even want to go through all the difficulty of making a third-party game better on the PS3, which I doubt they will. I don't even see why you brought up the cell processor, as that fits in with the graphics, and whoopie for Blu-Ray, IF it catches on. As for games...well name one that people are excited for beyond MGS and FF. Two series I have a good feeling will be getting their fair share of attention on other consoles. Yeah...

'Hate'? 'Wanting them to fail'? Thanks for the stock speech, but you're overreacting. My point is the same as yours, only I don't see much 'healthy competition' in Sony's 'We are Playstation! We can do anything we want and you will love us for it!' attitude. I didn't come here to argue, take it easy.

You're all entitled to your opinions, I'll give you that much. For the sake of being nice here, Peanut and Gwgtrunks, you make a few valid points, I guess. However, instead of trying to rip apart the other consoles (based solely on the company name behind the thing, I suspect), perhaps we should be shouting out praise for the ones we're looking forward to? I've made my case for the PS3, now your turn. :)

Oh, and I apologize Mecha Cow if I misunderstood you...And you're very welcome for the stock speech. I excel at those, mind you.

You're looking at this as if I'm a completely biased person. I own a PS2, I've owned a PS2 since pretty close to the launch of the damn thing. I still play it. I don't love companies. I love games, but Sony's being abusive. They're so overly cocky that they think they can charge whatever they want, and the idiots will eat it up.

BTW, want to mention which of my points wasn't valid? I don't think you can without a not so good answer.

I've already stated all of my opinions, and you've stated all of yours. I doubt that anything I say will make you change your mind, seeing as how our opinions are basically exact opposites when it comes to the PS3, e.g.:

I said the PS3 would have great games, you said it wouldn't.

I applauded the PS3 for including PSP and EyeToy support -- but you said they'd be nothing more than gimmicks.

I said the PS3 graphics would be kick-*ss, you said they wouldn't be a lot better than the 360's.

I mentioned Blu-Ray technology and the fact that the PS3 will support the format (all the games will ship on Blu-Ray discs, I've heard) -- you said 'whoopie.' :)

This is turning out to be an incredible night; rebuttles, attacks, challenges...What next?

Toonami Tom 05-14-2006 06:30 PM

Personally I'm not a Sony Playstation hater. I love my Playstation 2, the last 3 games I bought were all for PS2. I don't have a PSP though, and I don't plan on buying one. Since I already have XBox 360, I see no need to buy a PS3 becasue of the price. I'm super hyped for Wii.

Initially I wasn't particularly thrilled about the Nintendo Wii (took a little while to get over the name, quite frankly) and its newfangled controller (looked a little awkward to me), but from what I'm hearing over the Internet and seeing on G4's live coverage of E3, I'm getting more and more excited for Nintendo's latest endeavor. The low price point is just sweetening the deal.

One particular aspect of the Wii I'm not excited about, however, is the game download service -- coming from a guy who's spent countless hours rummaging through dingy pawn shops and flea markets for old carts, there's nothing quite like powering up your dusty old NES and playing a few hours of Battletoads on the classic system. I have an inkling that playing old games on the Wii just won't be the same...I could be wrong about that, though. ;)

I currently own both a PS2 and PSP, and I can say that I enjoy both. The PS2's given me five years of wonderful gaming, and I can't really say that I've missed out on any great gaming experiences. Nothing exclusive to the X-Box or Gamecube has ever really begged my attention. As for the PSP, I really should get a bigger memory stick so I could lug around some more tunes...Other than that, I'm happy as a clam.

I'm sorry, but...no. I mean...just...no. At first I was taking your comments about the PS3 as someone who liked all games, but wanted a PS3 the most. Now I see the true colours. To say that the Xbox and Gamecube had no great gaming experiences is ridiculous. That, along with the fact that you think the PSP is a good handheld, and that you get your gaming news from G4, paints a really really bad picture.

Raven 05-14-2006 07:00 PM

I guess the 3D chip the PS3 is using is worth around 500 alone...er, so I guess thats one of the reason of why its so high.

I'm not a big fan of Sony, but I tend to like more of the games that are for the system, I would get a Nintendo system if it had games that caught my attention, but Xbox....eh I wont start (Manly because I just dont like microsoft, but thats me)

Yikes, targeting my personal tastes and opinions. Hmm, that seems to be the theme of the day, no? Anyway, I didn't mean to say that there were no good games or gameplay experiences on those two consoles...I do realise now that that's how it came out. For those who take that sort of thing seriously, I apologize.

Yes, I owned a PS2 and was never really inclined to own either a Gamecube or X-Box. Sure they had great games, but I've never felt as though I've missed out on a whole lot. 'Never put much thought into it, really. Does that make me a bad person? Am I not a part of our collective society anymore because I didn't shell out the money for three consoles? Am I going to be shunned by my friends now, seeing as how I've painted for myself a "really, really bad picture"? I happen to be a very satisfied consumer when it comes to my PS2, and I've never had any problems with it or the games it plays.

I wouldn't necessarily call myself a Sony fanboy, but if that's the way you want to construe it, then go right ahead. I've owned a NES, a GameGear, an N64 and a PS2, and I've enjoyed games on all sorts of other consoles (Genesis, SNES, PlayStation, Gamecube, etc.) Just because I was very satisfied with Sony's previous console and find myself a bit partial to the PS3, does that make me a hypocrite?

And yeah, I happen to like the PSP. And I like it for the same reason I like the PS2 -- all sorts of varied gaming experiences, plus a whole lot of other functionality. And yes, I do occasionally watch G4. Lately I've seen their E3 coverage on the Nintendo Wii and I'm looking forward to it. Do you have a problem with that?

P.S. -- Thanks for all the inflammatory comments, by the way. I don't think I've dropped this much ink in a sole thread before...A couple more and I'll be able to write a book!

Sorry, man...We kind of went off on a tangent there. The bottom line when it comes to prices though, in my humble opinion?

PS3: Yes, the $600 price will hurt PS3 sales, at least initially. I'm unsure as to what long-term effect it will have on the console, though I'm reasonably optimistic, especially considering the fact that the price is likely to drop in due time. But just like fans got over the funky-sounding name of Nintendo's new console, they'll get over the price of the PS3. Or buy the basic version, naturally.

Wii: Nintendo's in the best position price-wise. They have yet to announce an official price point, but they've gone on record as saying that the Wii will be the cheapest of the consoles when it launches, and I tend to believe them. The low price point, the new controller, and the new gameplay experiences will likely lead to booming Nintendo sales come Christmas. Wether or not it will truly revolutionize the industry as we know it and bring gaming to the masses, we'll have to wait and see for ourselves.

X-Box 360: Uhh, not a whole lot to say about the X-box 360, really. It's already out, those who wanted it have bought it, and those who've waited for the other heavyweights to make their appearances will now have to make a decision.

You know where my loyalty lies.

愛 05-14-2006 09:52 PM

You gotta be kidding. People will get over buying a console for $600? I don't know anyone who would drop that amount of money for a console that isn't even much better power-wise than the 360. The only purpose in me buying a PS3 is for MGS4 and the Final Fantasy series. But even that doesn't justify the money spent on it. The features of the PS3 aren't even all that appealing. Their online system copied off Xbox Live, the HDTV thing isn't even worth it since the graphics will be the same as 360, anyway, and it's just...not worth the money!

Peanut 05-14-2006 09:56 PM

Firstly, never said anything inflammatory towards you. I never insulted you once. I never plan on sinking to that kind of childish level. I'm sorry if you take what I say in that way. I just don't take the time to sugar coat all my sentences to make them sound nice. You must understand, I don't mean any of this in a hostle way.

Being that it seems like you're so far disconnected from the videogame community, I'll catch you up a little.

Sony no longer has a fanbase. The community has done a complete 180. The two biggest Sony fanboy bases on the internet, Gamespot and GameFAQS, have totally switched sides. The polls conducted on these sites would normally run heavily in favour of Sony, no matter what the question. Now Sony has fallen behind Microsoft and has fallen a LONG way from Nintendo.

No, no one is going to "get over" the $600 price tag. That isn't some kind of opinionated obstacle. "I don't know. Wii is a stupid name. Oh well. I guess I'll buy it." is a lot different from "I don't know. $600 is a lot of money. I can't afford it. Oh well. I guess I'll go without food for a month to get one!".

As for the cheaper version, it was proved with the 360 that the "cheaper" version of the console is worthless. Anyone who ended up buying a core 360 had to buy stuff to upgrade it to a premium, anyways, just so they could play games properly! The same will happen with the PS3. It's been stated everywhere.

I really don't know what else to say. Um..the PSP does suck. I own one, and with the exception of 2 or 3 good games, the rest of the line-up, past and present, is little more than a joke. Especially compared to the line-up of AAA games for the DS. It works alright as an MP3 player, but I own a much smaller, much better MP3 player for that. The PSP, at the moment, is a dust collector.

BTW Ecto, I'd like to know where you work. You've gotta have a ton of cash sitting around to be able to just run out and buy a PS3 with 1 game. We're looking at...what? Over $1,000 CDN? You're willing to drop that kind of cash on a console?

I'm a Sony sales representative. I'll get one for free, or so I've been told.

Kid Icarus 05-14-2006 10:34 PM

Since this is all about prices, just for the hell of it, lets do some math here, hm? I'm going to add up how much it costs to buy a new system, with a TV and two games. For this, we'll use Wii's rumored $199.99 price tag. This is all going to be done in USD, because it's just a stupid argument on the internet that no one really cares about. And incase you're wondering, here's the TV set I'll be using.

PS3: 599.99
Game 1: 69.99
Game 2: 69.99
TV 1599.99
Controller 1: 39.99
Controller 2: 39.99
Controller 3: 39.99
Monthly internet bill: 49.99
Cheap 5.1 system: 59.99

2559.91 before tax
2739.10 with a 7% sales tax

360 399.99
Game 1: 59.99
Game 2: 59.99
TV: 1599.99
Controller 1: 49.99
Controller 2: 49.99
Controller 3: 49.99
Monthly internet: 49.99
Cheap 5.1 system: 59.99

2379.91 Before tax
2546.50 wtih a 7% sales tax

Wii: 199.99
Game 1: 49.99
Game 2: 49.99
TV: 1599.99
Controller 1: 39.99
Controller 2: 39.99
Controller 3: 39.99
Monthly Internet Bill: 49.99
Cheap 5.1 system: 59.99

2129.91 before tax
2279.00 after tax

Diffrences:
PS3 over 360 - $192.60
PS3 over Wii - $460.10
360 over Wii - $267.50

Peanut 05-14-2006 10:39 PM

 Come on, man. You expect us to believe that? I didn't even know there were any Sony establishments up in Nova Scotia. You guys don't even have f*cking WENDY'S up there!

Space Lieutenant Josh 05-14-2006 10:42 PM

I personally am done buying new consoles-- but I can't even imagine spending 600 bucks on a new system. 200 was my limit even back when I was totally obsessed with games.

$600 is a lot of money-- some people get really bad cars for that amount. And I can see where Sony is coming from-- gamers in this day and age are adults for the most part and have their own money and a good idea of what they want to do with it. I personally wouldn't spend $600 on a video game console but I realize there are some who would. They'd really better have some great exclusive games and features for that price, though.

Ecto and Peanut, you guys should stop fighting. It won't mean a thing in 100 years, right?

Amen to that.

And as a final note, we do indeed have Wendy's "up here" in Nova Scotia. Now, we don't have any on Cape Breton Island, where I happen to live, so I'll give you points for that...lol

I still know you don't work for Sony. You can edit it out all you want! The word is out!

I guess we'll just have to wait and see wether or not the high price of the PS3 will substantially effect sales of the console. Myself and most of my friends are most excited about the PlayStation 3, as opposed to the other consoles, because we like the brand and find that Sony has the largest collection of games that we enjoy. In the long run, however, I don't think the high price of the system will dramatically effect Sony's position as leader in the videogame industry.

Though stranger things have happened, I admit.
