Hardest Games Ever Made?

What games have you played over the years that are hard, if not damned right impossible? Post your list.

6. F-Zero GX - The game is hard no matter how you look at it, but Master Class Diamond Cup, and the story mode on Very Hard are enough to make you question your religion. One story mission took me five hours of constant playing to master on the highest setting. It's a bastard of a game, but its still the greatest racer ever.

5. Mega Man 3 - I'm going to hold this grudge until I am dead.

4. Donkey Kong 64 - Now, its not that the game is unnecessarially hard, but I spent six months getting 101%, and killed off all 202 Golden Banannas, eight keys, two coins, 10,000 multicolor banannas, twenty faries, 30 blueprints, and whatever else there was. Whatever in the hell prompted me to do that, I don't know, but the secret ending was some funny sh*t. Not worth the time though.

3. Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (SMB2J) - Ahhh, anyone who read Nintendo Power in 1992 has to remember the "World 9 Challenge". I still have my Super Mario patch that I recently put on a jacket. Back then, that was one evil challenge, but I did it. My battery died a few weeks ago, erasing my score of 9,999,990. Oh well, there's always the Virtual Console.

2. Super R-Type (SNES) - I got kicked in the balls by this one on many occation. Damned shooters are all alike. Still, this sucker couldn't hold a candle to the next one....

1. Gradius III (Arcade) - This game is a soulless bastard. Quarter munching, cheap death ridden, son of a b*tch. It will throw stuff at you so fast that the CPU will slow down to the point of a freeze-up. Its mean as hell, but its music and style are so good, you keep comming back. That dosen't mean I let it off the hook. Its still a soulless bastard. I conquered the somewhat dumbed down SNES version, but I still can't beat the Arcade original.

Kid Icarus 06-17-2006 05:58 PM

what was it? Super Ghosts and Goblins?

Something along those likes.

I hear it's impossible.

iris 06-17-2006 05:59 PM

Spelunker. Insane little game.

Hannah 06-17-2006 06:29 PM

o_o The Lost Levels was hard. But... I never really got that far. Because my brother would never let me play.

Cure 06-17-2006 11:00 PM

Ikaruga on Gamecube........oh that game was evil.....

愛 06-17-2006 11:22 PM

Shinobi for Playstation 2.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for NES.

Xenogears for Playstation. (I always get stuck at some point)

ThirdMarioBro 06-18-2006 12:25 AM

I forgot Ninja Gaiden for NES.....and Xbox. Played it for five minutes and I can just feel its a bastard.

Like I said, all shooters are soulless bastards. Guess that's why I love 'em.

The Clerk 06-18-2006 12:58 AM

TMNT on NES is a bitch.

Ninja Gaiden for Xbox is hard.

Lost Levels, also very very hard.

...I have never... e-e-e-EVER beaten Mainiac Mansion for NES.

and Clock Tower for PSX

愛 06-18-2006 01:01 AM

I am happy to say that I can beat Maniac Mansion with my eyes closed, with any combination of characters, with the exception of one combination. I don't know it off the top of my head.

Kid Icarus 06-18-2006 02:20 AM

Ikruga... how could I forget that bastard?

My friend and I each pitched in five bucks to get it at Gamestop used. Damn hard game.

and TMNT on the NES actually *is* impossible to beat, or so I hear. Something with some poison reefs and not being able to actually get past one part or something.

cowabunga14 06-18-2006 05:59 PM

I'd say Incredible Crisis for PlayStation was a game that always got more difficult and it demanded a lot of hand-eye coordination. I've never beaten the first level/task of the game and that embarrasses me. :ohwell: It was fun while it lasted.

Spitfire 06-18-2006 06:05 PM

Devil May Cry's Dante Must Die mode causes brain damage. I'm sure there's alot harder games but that ones punishment for casual gamers.

Sliced 06-18-2006 06:26 PM

God of War, on God mode. The game in itself is not harder than a usual hard mode game. But man, the final boss... Its divided in 3 parts.

Part 1, fight him till you can hurt him enough to go to part 2. Not too hard really.

Part 2, kill clones of yourself to be able to save your familly who CAN ALSO GET KILLED BY THE CLONES ! That is no doubt one of the hardest thing I had to do in a game ! Man, you must have to kill near 1500 of clones or something like that, it just goes on forever. They attack you, and while your down, they're attacking your familly. Doesn't take too long before they kill them, and you then have to start all over again. Its f*cking frustrating and its the hardest thing I had to do along with Mortal Kombat 3 for snes on very hard mode.

Peanut 06-18-2006 06:39 PM

Dude, that part is so easy. You just keep using Poisedens (sp) Rage, fully upgraded of course. Then if your family gets a little hurt, just quickly stop and grab them to refill their health bar.

How about Halo 2 on Legendary? That sh*t is brutal. It's like playing a whole different game. More akin to a realistic shooter than a straight run and gun.

Sliced 06-18-2006 06:57 PM

I'm talking about god mode man. Its not as simple as Hero or spartan mode. You take alot more dmg, you inflict less and if you keep healin your family, you will run out of life soon enough cuz its your life your giving them. ANd you can't use only Poseidon's Rage since you are restricted. The only way to kill alot of clones using that method is to use Rage of the gods then do like 4-5 poseidon's rage in a row along with hades army to kill alot of clones.

But then, that will clear the first half of that part, but you won't receive alot of magic from the death of the clones. So you won't be able use poseidon's rage again in the second half. Or if lucky, not more than 1 time. If you can use it more than that, you were not playing the game on god mode...

And yeah Halo 2 is a pain in the a$$ on legendary mode. But you can still beat the game without too much frustration. BUT, I tried it in coop mode with my brother and man. Now that is a near impossible game to finish. In solo mode, the game is indeed pretty hard, but the monsters can be killed.

In coop, its like if their shield was lasting forever. We had to empty an entire clip just to get the convenant shields down. Then they were running to cover and were recharging their shields in no time while we were gettin killed by ultra precise bastards and grenades hitting us all the time... Yup a hell of a ride.

Peanut 06-18-2006 07:13 PM

Dude, I've beaten it on God mode doing that exact thing. I learned it from a GoW God Mode speed-run.

What makes Halo 2 Co-Op mode harder is the fact that you usually won't have a friend as talented as you at the game, and there are no respawns, so when one dies you both restart.

Sliced 06-18-2006 07:32 PM

Well how did ya do it. You were just using Poseidon's Rage over and over again without ever running out of magic ? Its impossible since the clones are not giving alot of magic when they die. So you can use PR about 3 or 4 times when your not using rage of the gods. Then another 4-5 times when using it. 9 Poseidon's rage is not enough to clear part 2. The way I was able to beat part 2 is by clearing the first half with rage of the gods and PR, then using PR maybe 2 times in the second half.

For the rest, I was blocking and counter attacking by sweeping and some other special moves that would hit alot of clones at the same time. So how did ya did it so easily with such a lot of PR is something I don't really understand... Were you using the outfit that was granting extra magic to Kratos ? Cuz if so, it would explain it all.

About that respawn thing in Halo 2, you're right, it is a problem. But me and my brother are very good at FPS, and we are about as good as each other. So the problem was not that. It was really the fact that it took alot of bullets and plasma shots to lower their shields. We were running out of ammo alot. We still managed to finsish the game, but man. Took us a while.

Peanut 06-18-2006 07:44 PM

Your RoTG meter refills while healing your family, so I just let the clones do some damage to them, then cleared the clones out a bit and healed my family, then right back to PR and a couple of the strongest combos on stragglers. To be honest, the dude that pissed me off was the one who keeps spawning and shooting arrows.

Sliced 06-18-2006 08:04 PM

Ah, for me, he wasn't a problem at all, the jerk was always missing  . The thing is that by using your method, you must be running quite low on life. Cuz your clones are not givin alot of magic, but it goes the same with the lil green orbs. I rarely had my life full while fighting them. Its true that by healing your family, you fill your RoTG, but its risky. I tried it, and didn't worked that good for me.

You know what's another hard game? The original Contra without the Konami code. You might as well forget it, because you're dying and losing.

ThirdMarioBro 06-19-2006 12:47 AM

How about we change that to any Konami game without the Konami code. Those old Konami games were would ream anybody with a broomstick.

Spitfire 06-19-2006 02:14 PM

I tried playing the old MGS games that were on the bonus disk for MGS 3 and their pretty damn hard.

I think we have a winner. That sh*t just isn't possible for a normal human being. I'm not ashamed to say that Contra caused my first broken controller and was actually the first game I completely smashed to sh*t in anger, which is something I rarely do to an actual game

OA 06-19-2006 08:51 PM

I was about to say Ninja Gaiden on NES when i read that last post about Contra....now that game was SICK!

KROW 06-19-2006 09:00 PM

I never had a problem beating Contra without the Konami Code. Sure, it took me a lot of tries and continues to do it, but I eventually got the job done.

However, to my shame, I could never get past the speeder stage in Battletoads.

愛 06-19-2006 09:03 PM

I'd have to call you a liar. That game is impossible. It can't be done.

I understand the disbelief, but I did do it. It took me a loooong time to accomplish it, though. I played the game for over two months, trying to get the right strategies for the right levels and bosses. My brain was fried when I made it.

Ecto Jedi 06-19-2006 09:08 PM

Battletoads, for the NES. Stupendously difficult during solo play, absolutely impossible when two players team up. 'Hardest game I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing, anyway.

If you're a Battletoads fan, check it out. :)

jeff the cheff 06-19-2006 09:41 PM

ditto on battletoads.

and DDR is impossible to beat

The first game that caused me to smash a controller was Mega Man 3. That game can eat sh*t and die.

Deathknight 06-20-2006 01:51 PM

Ninja Gaiden 3 NES (US version, yes the Japanese version was much easier)- not only are the enemies really annoying many are really hard to kill without the sword extension. Not to mention the overdamage in this version, the lowest damage you could take was 2 out of your 16 bars of health and in the later levels no enemy did such small damage.
Ghost 'n Goblins NES- Yes I've heard that Super Ghosts n' Ghouls was harder but to me this game was just insane. Took me such a long time to get anywhere in this game and then after I finally complete the game the first time you have to beat it AGAIN and it's harder than before.
Hudson's Adventure Island NES- After playing this game for so many years and unlimited continues I have came nowhere near completion of this insanely hard game. The beginning isn't so bad but then you get to the later levels where you might end up having to go through the entire level without a weapon if you die.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- Ah the insane frustration this game causes so many people. Donatello and Leonardo were the only useful turtles in this game. Donatello is probably the best but a lot of times the angle that Leonardo attacks from can prove more useful. You start out up against medium difficult enemies in the first two levels. Then when you hit 3 and 4 it starts to become quite difficult. The enemies do more damage and are harder to kill. Then comes 5 which when I first played I couldn't believe how hard the enemies had became. They all become fast and aggressive and take many hits to kill. You have to take out the Technodrome as a boss which does massive damage and takes many many hits to defeat. Then what you thought couldn't get any harder does. Inside the technodrome not only includes the nightmare of some nearly undefeatable enemies (god damn flying guys with lasers) but if you lose a turtle anywhere you have to start all the way at the beginning of it.

BTW, how did you get levels A-D in Super Mario 2 Japan? I beat the game completely in Allstars but that version is easier. Then I just beat 8-4 just for fun in the NES version that I have which has stage select and after I beat world 9 it ends. Also with MegaMan 3, who else noticed Flashman Docbot's uber glitch hax where he can void your invincibility period and hit you multiple times?

XERO 06-21-2006 10:05 AM

My three favorite games to curse at were the ones that were just mentioned.

Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden and Contra.

Proud to say, I can beat Contra without the Konami Kode. I'm sure I can plow through it without a continue.

I'm still working on the others.

I never managed to finish Tetris.

And SNES Asterix - for some odd reason, there was no possibility to save your game. Thus, you had to play the whole game at once... or to start from the very beginning everytime you lost.
