COWABUNGA!! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Costume FINISHED - PICS PAGE 6

Hey all,

This has been a dream project of ours for years, and we have finally gotten around to doing it. These are a few pics of the work in progress so you can see what we are up to. The full suit will be done in the next 2-3 weeks, and we'll continue to add progress pictures to this thread for those interested.

We'll also have all 4 of the costumes at Dragon Con, possibly SDCC, and a few other conventions. We are doing movie heads, and another version of the heads as well, which will be unveiled soon as well...probably after the full suit is finally finished.

The mask will be available in cloth, not just the sculpted verrsion, the joints will have leather pads, etc. So, anyway, here are the pics of work in progress...(just started) the hands, and feet...and the head and shell are nearly complete.

More to come, so check back soon!!!!!

WOW!!! that looks incredible, i cant wait to see the final costume...is it gonna be an actual costume that you can wear?

Spitfire 09-12-2006 11:09 PM

Wow dude that is amazing. That could be in a movie man. Great work you did!

Xtreme Design FX 09-13-2006 08:11 AM

Yes, it will be a fully wearable costume, and will be put on much like the movie suits. The mask will not however have the animatronics it had in the movie.

thats awesome - i can understand the no animatronics in the head though, that would be crazy expensive

Dragnskull 09-13-2006 10:06 AM

simply AWSOME work...but one question

shouldnt the bandana not be on right now? :S

Spawn Guy 09-13-2006 11:01 AM

He did say that the costume was like the movie versions, and in those versions the 'mask' parts were sculpted and painted parts of the rest of the mask, while the only cloth parts were the knot in back and the bandanna tails. I'm guessing Xtreme's costume will be similar to that.

Bmaga123 09-13-2006 10:44 PM

To answer the question about the bandana's. In the movie the bandan was sculpted into the head and then a thin cloth was applied over the sculpted bandana to give it that raised look that it has in the movie. The cloth is glued tightly over the sculpt is why you see the wrinkes and detail. :)

Buslady 09-14-2006 12:33 AM

Uh yeah, what Bmaga said. I was gonna say hehe..cause im lookin at my Raph portrait on the wall...it's cloth all around over a sculpted brow

good lookin sculpts though, lots of work. Which turtle will this one be? Looks Raphish but then I wanna say Leo

discordiatookie 09-14-2006 03:08 PM

wow! these look great!

wish i had a shell....

TMNT 09-14-2006 03:22 PM

Once done, will the costume be for sale? And if so, where would one be able to purchase it? I know that's a long ways from now, but just a general question. Thanks.

cowabunga14 09-17-2006 06:46 PM

These costume pieces are lookin' great so far. Glad you're making progress. Good luck and godspeed with the rest!

Dragnskull 09-18-2006 09:40 AM

could someone please explain to me the process of turning clay sculptures into costumes? i mean i always thought people used a human sculpture and made a suit around it, not make a sculpture in the suit, cause if you add material over it...all the detail would be on the inside...?

Bmaga123 09-18-2006 10:21 AM

You start with the sculpt. Once the sculpt is finished and dried you cast it by making a mold of the sculpt. Now you have a mold that you would poor the latex material into creating the detailed peices of the costume. Hope this helps :)

but wouldnt htat in turn just create a non-hallow cast, which is exactly where you started off from?

magidkaiser 09-19-2006 06:46 AM

great work -well done man

Wow those were really really cool I think they should do a Movie to 2007 that is like the old onces,With the costumes on

Kingpin 09-20-2006 06:15 PM

It's the type of project only true dedication and love would see it through to completion.

Some fantastic sculpt work on the limbs, shell and head. Really fantastic.

Should we take the 'frown' as being a sign that you intend to go as Raph? (I'm unaware of any past topics which mentioned this project, so excuse my now knowing which Turtle it's meant to be).

Xtreme Design FX 09-21-2006 05:11 PM

Tmnt

Here's an update on the project:

The shell is molded and will be cast tomorrow and Saturday, with pics hopefully on Mon for all to see. It is a massive 4 part mold, and it looks beautiful. We can't wait to put it on! The head has been molded since these pictures, and will be cast tomorrow, with pics to follow shortly after as well. The chest section (arms, neck and top of torso) will be photographed early next week, as well as the front section of the turtle shell (full chest section). The entire waist and leg sections will also be photographed next week. Both hands are finished and will be molded ASAP...it's all coming together nicely. All of the elbow, knee and wrist pads are being put together now as well.

Here are a few pics to update:

amazing, cant wait to see it completely done

Buslady 09-21-2006 10:35 PM

If that's Raph based on the movie, there's just one characteristic missing...scar on his upper left lip/cheek.
The skin texture is NICE. But he shouldnt be glossy like that, I'll assume that just a production coat?
cant wait to see this all done! lookin good

Dragnskull 09-22-2006 05:20 AM

...i never knew raph had a scar in the movies?

anyways, thats just the clay molding, so its fine for that piece to be glossy [probably some kind of stuff to keep the mold from sticking too much? *shrugs*]

and also: might i ask how exactly you managed to do that texture? honostly it looks like styrophome [if you look at styrophome youll see that exact design/texture] but i was wondering if im right :S

Xtreme Design FX 09-22-2006 07:40 AM

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Let me answer a few questions for those that asked...

How we make these things. Here's the short and sweet answer: Sculpt the pieces out of clay. Mold them out of Ultracal-30 (basically plaster material). Molds are generally 2 part, a front part and back part that are put back together after demolding. After they are put back together and strapped, we then pour latex. Latex is poured layer after layer, once one layer has cured a little, you pour your next layer. Each layer adds thickness. When you pour your layer, you pour the excess latex back in the latex bucket. After the piece is poured, and completely dry, the costume piece is pulled from the mold, then you get what you originally sculpted, now wearable. The piece is then cleaned up, trimmed, and dremmeled. After that process, it is painted, shaded, highlighted and clear coated.

All of these pieces will also have a foam core to make them feel more realistic, and that is a whole other beast to expalin.

The other question is the gloss on the sculpt. After a sculpt is finished you spray it with a clear coat, which helps prevent the clay from sticking to the Ultra-cal, making it easier to get the mold off the sculpt when it is taken apart. The gloss will not be on the finished pieces.

As for the texture...that is from a single texture tool. Each spot of texture is hand stamped...over the entire piece. A very tiring process.

Draconic 09-22-2006 08:33 AM

..But looks like it was worth it! Those look great so far. How many are you planning on making?

Personally, I don't think it'd be the thing I'd wear for halloween or anything. --It looks more like something I'd put on a mannequin in a glass case in my house! My shrine to the TMNT! :-P

Tortuga Joe 09-28-2006 04:28 PM

Dude --
Those costumes look unreal. I can't wait to see what they look like when they're all finished, they're are unbelievable (the shell especially looks incredible). And yeah, obviously something that won't happen for a little while, but if those are for sale, I'm totally down for one of them. Solid work.

(And by the way, to everyone, this is my first post. I signed up a couple of weeks ago, then moved, and hadn't recieved internet for a long while. I did, however, post on the introduction page way back when).

Xtreme Design FX 10-05-2006 05:53 PM

Okay, another update for everyone. What you see is an unfinished, unapinted: head (with the silicone eyes not affixed), torso, forearms and hands. None of the pieces have their foam muscle backing yet, so everything looks a tad flat...but soon we'll be showing much, much more.

I'd definitely be interested in picking one up too.

Raph_goes_Europe 10-06-2006 03:36 AM

Hey all,

I'm the fanatic who commissioned XtremedesignFX to make the suit :D

I've been giving 'em quite a hard time, pushing them to get it finished,
but I've come to the conlusion to just let them go at it, at their own pace...

They're working on it for up to 16 hours a day, about 7 days a week,
so they're giving it all they've got. These guys are absolutely the best,
most dedicated pros at what they do.

I can't thank them enough for taking on such a huge project :tthumbsu:
-- I am sooo looking forward to finally getting that suit delivered --

Tom.

Draconic 10-06-2006 09:18 AM

Jeeze dude, you commissioned that? That's gotta be all kinds of expensive! :o I was thinking/hoping they were making it as a sort of prototype for a (small)mass-producing project or something but... whoa.

It's awsome that you are sharing these progress pictures of the Ninja Turtle with us, these are wicked-cool.

---
Edit:
I really like that Casey Jones aka Pain 101 mask. I might have to look into getting that...

Yup he did. Left cheek, just over the lip...it actually slightly forks too...Im pretty pathetic when it comes to Raph and details. You can see the little downward sweeping mark on his cheek here, going opposite direction than his little curl of the mouth....I seen a photo from the design studio, where you see all the details is plain light, the scar actually has a tiny little fork at the upper tip but it's so minute it's not really noticed. But the scar is noticeable, nobody ever realises it's there...baffles me

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...dy/goinout.jpg

anyways...the design is pretty damn good...im impressed. it's not easy taking a character like these guys and recreating them like this.
i probably would have had the pads buckled and velcroed both, i think they were like that in the movies, buckled to give it that primitive hand made look but under it velcro. everything was buckles with them. Raph's belt was weird cause it had fastened around back..how the hec would he put it on cause no way he can stretch around back like that hahaaa

dood...yer rich man...

Raph_goes_Europe 10-06-2006 04:36 PM

Rich? Me?
LOL, no way Buslady...

I've just been so fascinated by these costumes eversince I saw their first live action movie,
I always dreamed about actually owning one.

And when I saw one of the originals being sold over ebay
(in a rather bad state, torn and ripped from the action sequences and years and years of storage)
I started thinking about it again.

After more then 15 years, I'm finally able to get an excellent reproduction!
I can die a happy man :tangel:
(not today or tomorrow though, after it has arrived of course...)

Buslady 10-06-2006 05:01 PM

Yeah I saw a TMNT3 Donatello costume on Ebay, it was in bad bad bad shape. I never liked that design, it ruined them.
The first movie's look had the most realistic look, I think cause they created the costumes first them fit the electronics second, they reversed it in TMNT 2 so they looked different.

I dont know if i would want a raph costume to display, to me it would be like a hunter's trophy...a lifeless hero...a dead turtle. I do want a couple props though..they made many sets of the sai...I want a set of those, the steel ones, not the stunt ones...and his coat and that huge hat...

That was probably the one I saw too...
And the design of the suits (and not only the design, but colors and such, aswell)
was just awefull in TMNT3, I agree with that.
The Henson creations from TMNT1 still kick ass, after all these years.

I would like to see another live action movie like that happening, but then again...
That just might do more damage than good, with all the digital FX overkill these days...

Anything Creature Shop rules over all. They make the coolest, cutest and most realistic animatronic creatures ever. The neat thing is , the TMNT were apart of the evolution of the modern control system :D
We have All Creatures Effects to thank for screwing up their looks and using clunky crappy electronics..OMG you need SUNGLASSES to see their teeth they were so freaking white and FAKE looking. Come on people these are mutant turtles living in a sewer, they dont have dentists! hehe
I would love to see a new live movie in the SAME flavor as #1, with NO CGI in any way or form. Just plain old fashioned movie making.

OA 10-07-2006 11:37 AM

Sheesh..congrats on your commision...i would lovvvve to have a costume like - so real and life-like...

And as for the updates, all I can say is WOW...please keep them coming...can't wait to see the final product...

and just in time for Halloween!!:)

Lord Nightwalker 10-07-2006 07:22 PM

Man this is one of my favorite threads yet!
I have always had an interest in creature suits, and the making of them, so I thank you for the information you have provided in this thread. And the suits are realy good too! I have always wanted to make some ultra realistic TMNT suits and a few Predator and Alien costumes, and a realy bitchN' werewolf...ect. Anyway, Great work man, I'll be looking forward to the final work. Keep it up!
