What was up with that ripoff Battletoads???(& other ripo

I remember in the late 80's reading those funny TMNT parody comics like radioactive mutant hampsters, Miami Mice(ok, not a parody of TMNT but it was from that great mid 80's indie comic era, and eastman/laird were involved with a few issues) etc.

I also remember coming up with some joke ideas of 'samurai frogs'.

Then came the horrific early 90's...and lo and behold...WTF?!?!?

Battletoads? And this was even taken legitimately, with a cartoon and ill fated arcade and NES series. Man, I can imagine how Eastman and Laird felt. It woul dbe one thing if this was a funny ha ha sendoff meant as a parody, but they tried to establish it as some legitamate property. Heck they even got Technos/Tradewest to do a Double Dragon crossover. sad.
Then again I didnt care at all for Bucky O Hare or Cows of Moo Mesa...more TMNT wanna crap IMHO.

Anyone else think the Battletoads and other non parody ripoffs were
a sheer abomination?

That Matt Guy 01-16-2003 10:03 PM

I really don't think Battletoads was a ripoff, it was just a lame idea. But I do remember some really stupid show called Samuri Pizza Cats, now that is what I call a ripoff of TMNT.

Greed 01-16-2003 10:04 PM

I didn't mind the "ripoffs" hell I liked some of them

Karpo_007 01-17-2003 02:35 AM

Well If you think like that way the cartoon was a ripoff of the original TMNT...

Raph 01-17-2003 08:52 AM

Samurai Pizza Cats is definitly a Rip-off

The title song even says "They've got more fur then any turtle ever had"

Mmm that explains a lot

Reznorite420 01-17-2003 08:57 AM

I'll admit, I hated how cheesy and overdone Battletoads was. Rash, Zits, and Pimple were somewhat disgusting names. At least the turtles had some dignity in their namesakes (Renaissance painters/artists). The 'toads, however, made very little sense. Oh, and Beaker, you also forgot to mention the Game Boy and Sega Geneis/Megadrive versions. In any case, the original arcade version was the only game even REMOTELY worth playing IMO. I also had no idea that there was a cartoon of it! At first I thought it was just a comic, or just a video game series. Wow, you really DO learn something new every day

raphael90 01-17-2003 10:40 AM

ripoffs

Samurai Pizza Cats! LOL!

That sounds like a serious ripoff....was it funny? I don't know if I ever saw it or not.

tekcop 01-17-2003 10:51 AM

I actually like the Battletoads. Sure, they were a TMNT rip-off, but it was (and still is) a great game. Also, the cartoon series only lasted two episodes. I have both of them on tape.

By the way the Cow Boys of Moo Mesa were created by Ryan Brown and Dan Berger helped produce it. Your a Mirage fan, you should know those names.

Peanut 01-17-2003 10:58 AM

Bucky O Haire ruled! And Battletoads was a good game.

Karpo_007 01-17-2003 10:59 AM

Ryan Brown used to work on Tales of the TMNT series and well eveyone knows Dan berger.

Cherubae 01-17-2003 11:11 AM

The Samuari Pizza Cats (Kyatto Ninden Teyande - 1991) was a very cute anime from Japan ;) I wouldn't really classify it as an American Ninja Turtle rip-off like Battletoads. When it was localized the English theme song spoofed the Turtles because that's what was popular at the time.

xZAOx 01-17-2003 12:15 PM

man, you people are insane. battletoads on the SNES was awesome!

INSANE.

Karpo_007 01-17-2003 12:19 PM

Yeah Battletodas was a good game. But I haven't seen the animated series.

:sweatdro: they didn't said that in the original japanese version's theme, saban put that in the americanized version...i think they changed all the scripts too, y'know, all the dialog and stuff...and for once, i think it's the only americanized anime i like, as it was hilarious.
As for battletoads and other such shows, i dont think it was a ripoff, i loved that game :D it was great, i've also liked their double dragon & battletoads game...there was a cartoon too i think, only 1 ep of it was made, but i cant find it.
I liked most of the toons you'd call 'rip off' anyways, so for me it's a good thing that they 'ripped tmnt off' :P
Yeah, im talking about cowboys of moo mesa, bucky o'hare, bikermices from mars, street sharks, because they weren't bad imo...of course there were some bad apples, like extreme dinosaurs imo, i didnt liked that one, but that's because i think it's boring, not just because 'it ripped tmnt off'.
If i would use your idea of what is a rip off, then i would say the tmnt anime is a rip off of saint seiya because they use armors.

Tokka-B 01-17-2003 02:43 PM

Hey beaker, enough bashing early 90's man...those were the glory days of video game software....BattleToads is an awesome game. So was Double Dragon and they finally combined too, if you say battletoads copied tmnt, then tmnt copied double dragon, which was probly the first beat em up....There are always going to be copies, you gotta realize that, but some are good, and some are awful.

Nickokapo 01-17-2003 02:50 PM

True, it's called a genre, if we start saying everything was a rip off of everything...
Ok, maybe some of those shows did looked a lot like tmnt, but i think they were good...err most of them.

First off, Double Dragon is from the late 80's...1987 to be exact. I remember dumping in a lot of allowance money when it first came out;) Second, how could TMNT have copied Double Dragon? Eastman and LAird created the TMNT concept in 1984, Double Dragon debuted in the Spring of 1987 in Japan and later that year in the US.

And c'mon, you seriously dont think Battletoads is a ripoff/sendoff of the TMNT?(Battle Toads...Ninja turtles. 3 Ninja frogs, 4 ninja turtles?) It's just one of those embarassing things from the early 90's noone cares about anymore.

Yeah I know who was behind Moo Mesa, that doesnt mean I have to like it. To me it falls right in line with Bucky O haire, Samurai Pizza Cats, Biker Mice, BattleChoads, etc.

At any rate, thank goodness the BattleChoads didnt last that long.

Karpo_007 01-17-2003 04:08 PM

Sorry to be a Wise guy but the TMNT were created in 83. It was 84 when they published it.

Tokka-B 01-17-2003 07:00 PM

You obviously don't know that I was talking about the video game the whole time, which was like in 1990 or something...So yes, they copied the video game from Double Dragon as every beat em up has.
Of course Battletoads was a rip-off of tmnt, I thought you already knew that, duh. It was still good though, :|

Ah, but the TMNT game was released in 1989 :P

Tokka-B 01-17-2003 07:37 PM

Ah, but you still did not understand me, I mean the beat em up one, if you were following the conversation correctly...

Ah, but apparantly you're ignorant, because I WAS referring to the beat-'em-up one. Which one did you THINK I was talking about?

Um, check the game out if you have the rom of it. Notice the beat em up 4 player arcade TMNT game clearly says 1989...I should know, it was one of my fave games of 1989 at the arcades next to NARC, Strider, and Final Fight.

Tokka-B 01-17-2003 11:25 PM

I am not talking about the arcade, I am talking about the console game, duh...even since it was '89, it copied Double Dragon...so HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Domo 01-18-2003 01:55 AM

I loved Biker Mice, Bucky O'Hare, and Cowboys of Moo Mesa! Samurai Pizza Cats was one of the funniest cartoons I've ever seen. They made up the entire dub, and it consisted of parodies and spoofs of everything along with some really great tung-in-cheek jokes. Though I do agree they were unoriginal in alot of ways, it doesn't mean they weren't good series. I loved the Street Shark figures and the Battletoads games, but I never saw either of their cartoons. From what I've heard they never got past the pilot episodes.

Street Sharks had at least one season.

TigerClaw 01-18-2003 08:51 PM

Extreme Dinosaurs is more of a Ripoff of Dinosaucers.

The 1989 NES game wasnt even close to Double Dragon...it wasnt even a beat em up. It was more akin to the NES Ninja Gaiden, and even that is a stretch.

As for the ubiqutious range of early 90's TMNT Ripo...err, I mean 'TMNT influenced' cartoons...I dont see any revivals planned for those properties;)

Tokka-B 01-20-2003 12:52 AM

I am not talking about the 1989 game..that was more like castlevania...I am talking about the 1990 tmnt 2 game, that was a copy of double dragon, duh.

Karpo_007 01-20-2003 02:10 AM

No that was bad conversion of the Arcade game...

Tokka-B 01-20-2003 10:59 AM

Yes, and the arcade game was also a copy, now that you mention it!

robot717 01-20-2003 11:17 AM

Battletoads was indeed a TMNT rip-off and a bad one at that. The games were absolute crap. There was a moronic comic in Nintendo Power magazine and as I've heard a crappy cartoon.Fortunately for the gaming and animation communities Battletoads is now long dead, buried and lying in an unmarked grave in a junkyard somewhere. And if I knew where said grave was,I'd happily go and relieve myself on it.
By the way,I've lurked here for awhile but this topic made me want to register.I HAD to get this off my chest.

Brodie 01-20-2003 04:44 PM

I liked the Bucky O Hare toys, but the tv show bites.

Tokka-B 01-20-2003 05:26 PM

Way to go robot...according to that, every beat em up is a ripoff of double dragon...

In fact, there even was a game where BOTH battletoads and double dragons were in together...so HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

robot717 01-20-2003 07:09 PM

Battletoads wasn't really a Beat-em-up.It had a few Beat-em-up style levels but it also had annoying can't-fit-into-any-category levels like that godawful speed bike level and Bungee Jumping.
And Tokka every Beat-em-Up is kind of a rip off of Double Dragon,or to be more precise it's offspring.Double Dragon created and defined a Genre

Here here! Good to see that and other TMNT ripoff garbage just another forgotten relic of the horrific early 90's.

Now then, as for beat em ups...it's my favorite genre. thank goodness for MAME! Some were good(Final Fight, Double Dragon, golden Axe)...others, not so good. While Double Dragon is unquestionably the original, it was Capcom's Final Fight in 1989 that truly revolutionized the genre.

Sadly, the latest attempt, Square's Bouncer...was about as interactive as
Dragon's Lair. That is why I am so excited about City of Heroes online this summer...finally, a massive multi player online beat em up!

And finally, dear gosh almighty I cant see how that pathetic NES TMNT Arcade keeps getting mentioned. Its like watching Aliens edited for tv with bad reception at 2pm and thinking youve seen the movie in full.

Karpo_007 01-21-2003 03:40 AM

Yeah. The otiginal TMNT aracde is probably the best arcade game ever made... Of course in the eyes of non TMNT fan, it coul be just ok. Well Im not that harsh about the nes conversion, When it came out, there was no mame or powerfull enough PC to run it. And the nearest arcade I know had it was hundreds of Kilometers away. But today the choice is clear.

Hundreds of kilometers away? I've been living in the city too long...

Karpo_007 01-21-2003 07:55 AM

Well I live in a small town, The only TMNT arcades I knew back then were in amusment park in Helsinki. There were probably others, But I didn't know where.

Good to see the TMNT revolution still has a global reach! ^_^
