Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Please Use Spoiler Tags

We now have a title for Harry Potter VII. But if you want to find out for yourself, visit J.K. Rowling's Web site and play a little game of hangman.

Rowling's U.S. publisher, Scholastic Inc., released a brief statement Thursday announcing the name of the world's most anticipated children's book, the finale to her phenomenally popular fantasy series.

No publication date or other details were offered. Rowling is still working on the book, she explained on her Web site in an entry posted early Thursday.

"I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more," she wrote. "I don't think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels: I am alternately elated and overwrought. I both want, and don't want, to finish this book (don't worry, I will.)"

Meanwhile, she set up a test for her Potter fans.

If you go to jkrowling.com, click on the eraser and you will be taken to a room — you'll see a window, a door and a mirror.

In the mirror, you'll see a hallway. Click on the farthest doorknob and look for the Christmas tree. They click on the center of the door next to the mirror and a wreath appears. Then click on the top of the mirror and you'll see a garland.

Look for a cobweb next to the door. Click on it, and it will disappear. Now, look at the chimes in the window. Click on the second chime to the right, and hold it down. The chime will turn into the key, which opens the door. Click on the wrapped gift behind the door, then click on it again and figure out the title yourself by playing a game of hangman.

Or you can just take Scholastic's word for it: "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

Raph's Girl note: The Deathly Hallows?! Is Icabod Crane in it? :P

Yay!! I can't wait for this. They've had it on pre-order already at a store near me.

It comes out on 7/7/07, yes? That's the perfect date.

By the way, I LOVE J.K.'s site. It's so awesome, and especially for her fans!

Roseangelo 12-21-2006 07:47 PM

I've heard the 7/7/07 rumor myself, but there's no official date yet. If she's still writing it (which the press releases today claim she is), it'll be tough for them to hit that date. (From what I understand they need at least 6 months between the completion of the manuscript and the publication date.)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Kind of a weird name, but whatever. I'm super excited for this book, although at the same time, I'm dreading it. I really really don't want the series to end.

Exactly how I see it. I want to read it so bad, and I know I'll be reading it, not being able to wait for the end... But I do dread it, too. It'll be sad. I love these books. Heck, I even have a picture of me in England AT Platform 9 3/4. (There actually IS one!) :)

Barkworm 12-22-2006 03:39 AM

I thought the last book was extremely lame at some points so I'm a bit worried about this one...

Mecha Cow 12-22-2006 09:55 AM

It's a shame this will be the last one, it feels unreal for the series to end. I actually thought each book was even better than the one before it, so I have no doubts about this one. Rowling is one hell of a storyteller, I'm sure she has something great in store.

Spoiler:
I hope Harry doesn't die though...

OA 12-22-2006 03:02 PM

Pretty neat little game there....i also love the series and so dont want it to end...im also a fan of the movies but those guys are getting so old, its starting to get a lil unbelievable...regardless, i'll be picking this up day 1 if possible...

Yeah, though... Ok, I LIKE Harry ok, but I don't love him as a character. In fact, in book 5 he annoyed the crap outta me. Ron and Hermione's where it's at.

That being said...

Spoiler:
I really don't have an opinion on if Harry dies or not. It'd be nice if he didn't, but if he does... It'd be a heck of a shocker and lesson to the readers. It may have the potential of making it better in some ways. The possibilities are endless. Juuuust as long as Ron and Hermione live, I'm all good.

Hopefully, more Ron and Hermione goodness so the non-believers will FINALLY after extreme hinting (and even TELLING) in 6 books, will shut up. :)

Mecha Cow 12-22-2006 06:00 PM

Spoiler:
Yeah, I won't really mind if he does die, as long as the story is good. I'd just prefer it if he lived after all 'we' have been through. As for others dying, I think Rowling said 'someone who shouldn't die, dies', or something like that. And we all know she has no problems killing characters off. :( Man, I can't wait for this book.

Spoiler:
Oh, and I'm not really interested in the romance stuff myself, but after book six it's pretty obvious Ron and Hermione wind up together, so no worries there.

Blasphemy! Honestly, that is one of my most favourite parts of the books. Ron + Hermoine = Forever! WEEE!

Jo Dawn 12-22-2006 06:22 PM

Another interesting thing. The title of the book was announced on the Winter Solstice... and... In Order of the Pheonix, it states ' "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." '

Cool, huh? She thinks of everything.

OA 12-22-2006 06:28 PM

Sheesh...that is pretty neat i guess...

I wonder what she'll do after the series ends...more books or call it day and just sit around and count her bazillions...?

iris 12-22-2006 07:04 PM

Spoiler:
Kinda sad, but I'm not that curious about whether Harry will live through the final book. I just want to know what side Snape is on and who he's scamming. There's a theory floating that Dumbledore was going to die anyway, even before he took Harry on that fool's errand. Throughout the books, Snape has been set up as a healer to rival any other, but is that the real reason Dumbledore asked for him after the poisoning?

It is very neat. She's so awesome.

After this last book, she's not writing any more Harry Potter books; at least, not for money. They only thing she was thinking of doing is doing an encyclopedia of sorts of all the characters and ideas that didn't make it in the books for charity.

Which, I think will be awesome. I'd love that.

Roseangelo 12-22-2006 08:31 PM

None of the stuff being put in spoiler text is a spoiler!

And book 6 has been out for a year and a half, so that's fair game.

Sorry.. I've just been annoyed with how everyone's been so secretive about the new book title and everything in the last two days.

But discussion on what COULD happen isn't a spoiler... :P

Jo Dawn 12-22-2006 08:43 PM

Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to HP.

I dunno... some of the 'conjecture' is based on things JKR has said about the end of the series, which I'd call spoiler material. *shrug*

Plus we've had... disagreements... on this board about people posting their theories out in the open, especially if the theories turn out to be close to correct.

Truly. I don't know how I'm going to get to read the last book before hearing about it by accident. :(

Peanut 12-22-2006 08:54 PM

Spoiler to us or not, some people might not have read the book yet, so like JD said, better to be safe than sorry.

I've been very lucky in this regard. I almost had the 6th book spoiled for me though. Right when I bought it, my sister picked it up and flipped the pages, only to come across the biggest part of the book, and reading a key line about said part, she knew
Spoiler:
Snape killed Dumbledore
, I could tell by the look on her face that she had just ruined the book for herself. I grabbed my book and ran to the cash, ears covered and head down, payed for it and got out as quick as possible. I then avoided contact with her for the weekend it took me to read it.

Mecha Cow 12-23-2006 08:08 AM

I think most HP fans had that one spoiled for them...I'm staying the hell off the internet next summer.

Or I'll try, at least. :(

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows release date!

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the last of seven installments of the boy wizard's adventures, will be published July 21, author J.K. Rowling said Thursday.

Rowling announced the publication date on her Web site.

Bloomsbury, her British publisher, said it would publish a children's hardback edition, an adult hardback, a special gift edition and an audio book on the same day.

Scholastic Children's Books, the U.S. publisher, said it would offer a hardback edition at a suggested retail price of $34.99, a deluxe edition at $65.00 and a reinforced library edition at $39.99.

Bloomsbury noted that this year is the 10th anniversary of the publication of the first "Harry Potter" book in the phenomenally successful series.

The "Potter" books have sold 325 million copies worldwide and been translated into 64 languages, Bloomsbury said.

The last book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," sold 2,009,574 copies in Britain on the first day of its release, Bloomsbury said.

The Potter franchise is so important to the company's earnings that it announced the publication to the London Stock Exchange.

Bloomsbury shares were up 2.2 percent to $4.40 after the announcement.

Great news! I'm sooo pumped. I'll be reading straight through that sucker on July 19th.

So you'll be reading it 2 days before it's released?! :o

That's my birthday. :D

07-07-'07 would have been neat, but 10th anniversary works too. A lot sooner than I expected, can't wait.

That's correct.

Oooo! I can't wait for this! Also, J.K. Rowling has announced that 2 of the characters will die in this last book. Here's a link - http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index...ory=5&id=39320

I heard this on the radio going to school as well. This really raises a whole lot of possibilites to who's going to die. I really hope Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid will still survive. Harry...well, it's up to J.K. if she lets him survive or not. Still, if he dies, I'm sure it will be for a noble cause :)

Mecha Cow 02-02-2007 12:49 PM

She's been saying someone is going to die for like a year now. Just like she did with the last book. And the one before that. And the one before that one. I'm all for killing characters but she shouldn't do it for the sake of doing it.

Roseangelo 02-02-2007 05:12 PM

Of course someone is going to die. We were told in the last book that either Harry or Voldemort has to die. :P

Who the second character might be.. well, there lies the real mystery. (Unless it ends up being Harry AND Voldemort.)

Jo Dawn 02-03-2007 09:52 PM

I really was surprised it wasn't 7/7/07... Since the number 7 is such a huge number of importance in her books... But whatever.

I'll be pre-ordering this ASAP (though you could have already for DAYS now...) and be reading straight through the day it comes out. Probably from midnight on! Hehe.

As for who dies... I don't care, as long as it's not Ron or Hermione.

Peanut 02-03-2007 09:55 PM

I'm really looking forward to this, but at the same time I'm dreading it. I have a feeling I'll be an emotional wreck once I finish with the book. The thought of never being able to look forward to another Harry Potter is extremely depressing.

Mr. Snackpants 02-03-2007 10:06 PM

I feel ya man. I almost want to stretch out the last book, savor it. But then I guarantee someone would spoil it for me. I'm glad my mom works at a library so I can read it before others will be able to ruin it for me.

Raph's Girl 02-04-2007 12:25 AM

So how many of ya'll are willing to fork over $60 for the delux edition??? I certainly aint.... the so called delux edition is delux cuz it's got pictures....

Roseangelo 02-04-2007 12:30 AM

Nah, just the regular edition for me. Although I got the deluxe edition of book 6 for my last birthday and it is pretty neato.

(Reading Rainbow! Woot!)

I'll surely dish out $60, well worth it imo.

Leonardo's_Girl 04-08-2007 06:55 PM

Since the book is offically published on the 21st of July, I think they did that knowing well that a couple of characters would die, and the Order of the Phoneix was being released to theaters in early July, so they probably did that so fans can first see the fifth installment on the big screen, and then read the seventh book, and be less disappointed than they would be if they released close together.

Tinuvielsdreams 04-08-2007 07:12 PM

It's going to be hard to find another series like this one, My whole family is really into HP and I think I will get to the last chapter and not want to read it...lol

Rooish 07-16-2007 05:53 PM

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows speculation

Who do you guys think will die in the final chapter of the HP saga? J.K. Rowling announced the number of characters who would die in the final book at that number is:
Spoiler:
two.

Based on this number, I speculate that:
Spoiler:
Ron and Snape
will die.
Or maybe
Spoiler:
McGonagall.

What do you guys think?

Roseangelo 07-16-2007 06:01 PM

Actually...

Spoiler:
I have read in recent interviews that it is now more than two.

I am not speculating on whom, though.. it was too easy to tell going into Half-Blood Prince that Dumbledore was going to die (although I didn't see Snape doing it happening, so JK gets points from me for that), which made it less sad, so I'm just gonna go into the new book as ignorant as possible. 8)

Rooish 07-16-2007 06:16 PM

Oh. For a little while there I was feeling like it wouldn't be too depressing.
