What would happen if OT and NT TMNT met?
Mikey: NT Mike would find his counterpart's accent utterly bizarre and behind his back, make fun of him by impersonating the surfer voice. OT Mike would find out about this, get even more annoyed than he already was with NT Mike's antics and ironically enough tell him to "Grow up dude!". But then they'd start skateboarding together and find out that they can work with their differences and NT Mikey would say "Man, I was only pulling your leg don't be so sensitive!" and then OT Mikey would say "Yeah but that was not a very good impression dude!".
Donatello: OT Don would be relieved to have someone to share his feelings with as he's on a completely different intellectual level than his brothers but instead of finding comfort in NT Don, he would be perplexed by NT Don's humility in regards to his incredible genius. OT Don has an übermensch-syndrome and is unable to appreciate the joy of simple things like his brothers can. However, this makes him very arrogant because he believes not being able to enjoy simple things makes him superior. NT Don is in the same boat except he actually realizes that it's both a curse and a blessing not being able to be satisfied with the simple things of life. OT Don realizes he hasn't found his balance yet like NT Don. They start working together, but that makes OT Don realize even more that he has his faults when he realizes that NT Don is better at cooperation when inventing stuff. He also realizes he becomes more competitive than NT Don which also makes him feel more unbalanced and unsocial. He realizes he's become too much of an eccentric loner and tries to spend more time doing simple stuff with his brothers. Yet, he's unable to, and starts to realize just like NT Don, that his genius can be a curse just as much as a blessing. NT Don knows he's the big brother personality-wise but tries not to act it as he knows OT Don won't find that acceptable even though he knows it as well. Raph: OT Raph would be intimidated by NT Raph and try to be more serious around him but without pulling it off. NT Raph would try to make OT Raph feel more comfortable but that would make OT Raph even more nervous. They'd be uncomfortable around eachother and OT Raph would prefer to hang out with any of the other NT before Raph, especially Mikey. After a while though OT Raph would feel more confident around NT Raph, and they would become good friends. Leo: NT Leo would be totally relaxed and light-hearted around OT Leo. His big brother instincts would totally kick in and OT Leo would remind him of his younger self which would make NT Leo nostalgic. OT Leo would at first feel threatened by new Leo seeing as he would become the natural leader of the group but he would then develop a really good relationship with him and actually enjoy not having to lead and let his teenage side more lose. Actually he would even start viewing Leo as his new mentor and they would train a lot together. End note: In my mind, the 2k3 versions are very clearly the big brothers in these relationships. |
:D :D totally good thread. I can see all the OT TMNT being really intimidated by their NT counterparts in general.

As a side note, I think OT Shredder would find NT Shredder completely arrogant and would want him as far away from him as possible, while NT Shredder would be so disgusted by OT Shredder's apparent ineptitude, he would want to put him out of his misery...then he would meet Rocksteady and Bebop, understand OT Shredder's plight and offer to take him away from it all:lol:   |
OT Raph and 2k3 Mike would definately get along the best.
And although the turtles are so different in both series, Splinter is basically the same in all atributes (except color :) ) Quote:

It depends, I think of the newer series as being an older more grownup version of the OT. I think Raph and Leo may scare their older counter parts.
How about the Splinters though? one started human one started rat? Think about their conversations. They would also complain about their kids... |
um...time paradox? Lol acutally them meeting would be awesome but sadly will probably never happen

I can't stop laughing at the thought of April and Casey meeting their counterparts. |

You are too fuuny - I love the concept and you absolutely nailed it!! |
I foresee two possibilities. One, coming face to face with themselves 20 years later would put them into shock and they would simply pass out. Or two, the encounter could create a time paradox, the results of which could start a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum, and destroy the entire universe! Granted, that's a worse case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to our own galaxy. :D
|
Actually I think OT Raph would really annoy NT Raph, and they would have NT Raph / NT mikey relationship, except that OT Raph wouldn't deal with it the same was as NT Mikey, would take it really personally and be grumpy with everyone. He might also think NT Raph was stealing his thunder...
|
Yeah, I agree with jenna on the OT/NT Raph thing.
And I think NT Raph would scare the bejiggers outta OT Raph. |

So in a matter of speaking, the old-toon turtles were somewhat more mature as a family than in the new toon because they didn't fight with each other as much or get on each other's nerves as often. Being able to deal with family in a rational, non-violent way, to me, is a great sign of maturity. |
The old toon turtles weren't really a family.
|
Just because splinter didn't call them "sons" or they hardly ever called each other "brothers", based on what they do together in their free time and the fact they are willing to risk their lives for each other, they still seemed like a family to me. Actions speak louder than words.
|
Yeah, and getting annoyed by one another and still going out of the way to save each other says family to me louder than being the world's most fearsome fighting team.

Sounds like a family to me. ;) |
They just always came off as more of a team to me. If they had acknowledged the concept, that would have helped. Seriously, I had no idea they were brothers until I got into the comics. The new toon brothers actually act and acknowledge each other as brothers.
|
Yeah, you are right - they are definitely a team. That's what makes them so special - no matter what little dysfunctions are going on in their family life they can always band together and fight the bad guy, and then go back to the mundanity of it all afterwards.

And I say the old toon says family stronger. The old toon never really did to me, but there you go.

It's more mature and less destructive to joke about each others' differences than to let those differences provoke unnecessary fights. And I don't think they were at all ignorant of one another, they acknowledged each other very well and chose to be more mild-mannered in dealing with their problems than in the new toon.
|
Yeah, makes you wonder how much the teenage apect came into play. In either incarnation.
|
In light of the circumstances the turtles have to live under, in either cartoon, they're kind of forced to be more mature than is normal for their age. Besides, half that stuff they say about teenagers is bull**** anyway.
|
Oh I'm not talking about what "They" say about teenagers. I'm talking about what I think about teenagers. And I think the guy sin the OC do have a certain maturity from having to live like they do, but it's not totally out there for them to act like teenage brothers. They still have a ways to go. You can see the development throught the whole series.

One of the "negative" aspects of the TMNT according to the 80's media hater who wrote the anti-TMNT book and Turmoil in the Toy-box is that the the TMNT was a gang, and the OT portrays that more than the NT, which goes more familial. The OT TMNT never called each other "brothers" and Splinter seldom called them "sons" instead opting for "friends" and "students." I hate to say it, but the OT TMNT weren't a family, but more like Spawny said "a fearsome fighting team."
That said, I'll go on to my thoughts on my favorite Turtle from both series meeting each other: Raphael: OT Raphael would try to crack the tough exterior of NT Raph and I think only OT Raphael could do it. Mikey tries, but only Raphael may know Raph well enough to make Raph laugh or "come out of his shell," pardon the Pun. I kinda wonder what the NT Turtles would think of the OT Turtles not calling each other by the "nicknames." I mean there's another point to the "OT TMNT aren't as familial as the NT." |
Well, I wouldn't take my advice from a source like that. Besides, I already said that the OT turtles showed that they cared for one another and they enjoyed doing things together and spending time together just like brothers. And like I said earlier, actions speak louder than words.
|
Yes I agree about not using that book for my opinion, and I don't like the "Gang" discription either, The 90's movie, which also comes under fire, has the family dynamic out there as opposed to a gang feel, in fact the Foot "gang" family is condemned. I'm just saying that the TMNT in the OT were more good friends who would fight for each other and care for each other.
|
Yeah, the familial stuff is easier to spot with hindsight. The new toon wares it on it's sleeves. Not just with actually acknowledging each other as family but with the brotherly squabbling. Raph (Both of him) would probably hate the other. Or not like each other all that much. OT Raph thinks NT Raph needs to lighten up, NT Raph hates a smart ass. Although they're both sarcastic. That's how I'd play it anyway, maybe with them earning each others respect after averting whatever crisis. Maybe he'd get on better with Red Sky Raph.
On the whole I see the thing like that episode of Futerama where they discovered a parallel universe and the box that contained their universe in a box that contained the parallel universe. NT Don: I must have accidently created an entire parallel universe! OT Don: Baldercrap! All you created was my fist parallel to your face! |

I still believe they were well aware of their differences. Also, I don't honestly believe all brothers have to fight a lot in order to be very close to one another. The OT turtles seem to appreciate each other and bond very well without fighting. Maybe fighting is part of growing up, but the whole point of this part of growing up is to learn how to avoid fights (as often as possible anyway); if they already know how to do that, that means they've already grown up in this area. But there have been some moments where the OT turtles fight too, you know, so they ain't perfect, but they're still more grown up in this area than the NT turtles.
|
Eh... yeah. I didn't really consider the Turtles a family unit until I saw the first movie (never read the comics), where the idea of family was nice and strong. So in hindsight, I can say "oh yeah... they were a family."
NT definitely carries the familial theme. Brothers, sons, father. April as surrogate mother-sister. And I love the emphasis that they put on that in the NT show... that core element drew me to it and got me re-addicted. My sister and I fought all the time when we were younger... we don't so much anymore. But then, we were together ALL the time when we weren't at school. The Turtles, on the other hand, spend more time together than my sister and I ever did back in the day (except in the summer). That constant togetherness can lead to general annoyance, tension, and blow-ups when at least one person has had enough of the others. Add the fact that our heroes are all teenage males with testosterone in their system... ya gotta wonder why the OT Turtles didn't lose their cool with each other more often. It does help, of course, that OT Raph is way more laid back than NT Raph. A lot of tension in the family revolves around Raphie-boy. |

i don't have brothers but i've got two guy cousins (who are also bro-less, our family's got way more girls than guys :dead: ) and we spent a lot of time when we were younger. i mean we didn't really live with each other like brothers would and we didn't see each other every day and we still fought all the time. maybe im just weird or aggression runs in our blood but imo there's something unreal about a family that barely fights and is filled with warm fuzzies nearly all the time. hell, even peter, mike and greg fought...quite often too. |
you know what would happen? the NT guys would see the OT guys and be like: "look how....squishy we are. So pudgy and....and....fluffy. IT BURNS!!!! LAST ONE TO PRACTICE HAS TO LIVE WITH THESE GUYS!!!!" :P

Interestingly enough, upon my recent acquisition of a MIP Mutagen Man figure (from a coworker no less!), I began thinking how cool Mutagen Man would be in the 2K3 series. This led to me wondering what it would be like if, say, via the Battle Nexus or something, the characters of the OS toon crossed over to the 2K3 toon - animation style, voices, and everything! Of course, that would be Hell to organize, but wouldn't it be a bitchin' series finale? |
"It does help, of course, that OT Raph is way more laid back than NT Raph. A lot of tension in the family revolves around Raphie-boy."
And OT Mike is way more laid back then NT Mike... And OT Leo is not as moody as NT Leo. Actually, the one to cause trouble in OT would've been Don, although not much happened... but he did patronize his brothers quite a lot. One episode I remember Don was bragging about how technology was superior to ninjitsu and how he through technology could defeat Shredder all by himself if he wanted to... he was pretty smug that OT Don! :D Of course, if anyone has the right to be that smug it's Don but in reality his frequent displays of superiority would've caused a lot of conflict. |
