Tales of the TMNT #40

From Murphy's Blog:

Quote:

This is one of three issues of Tales that I’m currently juggling (38, 40, 41), my last three of those shipping in 2007.

This one is a collaboration with Diego Jourdan, and features a middle-aged Raphael in Christmas Eve Tokyo. Lately it’s either only the very young (pre-teen) or the very old turtles that interest me in terms of storytelling. Not sure why, maybe because of my accelerating age (Dorian Gray-like, it seems of late), or the fact that I’ve finally had a child in middle-age, or both.

Anyway, this is only my second attempt to tell a comic book story without dialogue, the first being twenty or so years ago in The Puma Blues #5 (c. 1987).

This Raph story’s called (excuse the pun), “Silent Knight.”

Ok, this looks to be WAY awesome! And look! Raph has the eye patch!

Middle aged??? As in middle aged in human terms or middle aged in reptile terms (IE 100+)??

Either way this will be the 2nd time in a Mirage book that Raph has the eye patch. Why is it he only has one in christmas related ones???

Looks like he has a little Asian girl in his arms. Love the bomber jacket he's wearing.

VaughnMichael 06-30-2007 01:15 PM

man that pic looks awsome! looks like those could be foot soldiers!

The Shelf 06-30-2007 01:45 PM

Wow, this is gonna be really, really cool. Plus, silent comics = teh awesomeness. I can't wait to "read" this. But how the heck does Raph lose that dang eye?! I wanna read that story. :( :D

Scandia 06-30-2007 02:05 PM

Wearing an eyepatch does not automatically mean that he lost an eye. It could be a temporary eye injury. Or for protection after a surgery. Conversely, he could get an artificial eye if he had lost his original eye.

While all of that is true, it's pretty much accepted fact that Raph loses his eye at some point.

Scandia 06-30-2007 02:14 PM

Where is this shown exactly?

I don't believe it was shown in mirage which is odd they really do need to do more future old turtle storys.
And it was shown in the archie future tmnt world.
Raphael is always shown wearing a black eye patch in every future image of him.

diegojourdan 06-30-2007 02:45 PM

Howdy!

That's the 'Tales' comic i currently find myself illustrating!

It also happens to be a very significant story for me on a personal level: this particular future Raph version was featured in the pages of Archie's TMNT Adventures #42...the very first TMNT comic i bought (wish i still had it :( )
Funny thing is, i was was scheduled for minor surgery the very next day so i ended reading it in the HOSPITAL bed (bout 100 times for sure) :D

http://www.ninjaturtles.com/comics/archie/42/3.jpg

As for the bomber jacket, that's actually my jacket (no BS) ! It's COTTON, as the environmentally aware me won't wear leather products.

http://bennieswestern.com/shop/image.../FRJ134BLG.jpg

Which reminds me, were old Archie TMNT comics printed on recycled paper and using environmentally friendly inks?

Talk about history (and i wasn't allowed to post the cover illo in my blog ...:ohwell: )!

Diego.

So wait does the story take place in archie comics tmnt world or mirage?
And its beautiful great job on the art!
And thats cool I used to have that jacket as well when I was a teen hehe.
And about archies printing yes you are correct.
I'm sure it wa sonly posted in his blog because he's the big cheese!
And I'm quite sure some one could hook you up with that issue perhaps for some art or something ;)

Roseangelo 06-30-2007 02:55 PM

Thanks for dropping in, Diego! This issue looks to be fantastic!!

Archie #42 is one of my all-time favorite TMNT comics, period. And it totally brought me back into the Archie game after straying for about 15 issues. Inspiration taken from those stories is nothing but a good thing!!

Generally he looses it in explosions. That's what happened in Archie and Image.

Diego:

So this is set in the Archie Future Turtles timeline?! SW33T!!

Well, Raph does have a temper, and using those frikkin' sais of his to eat his cereal every morning instead of a regular spoon sure didn't help

Yeah It's been said by Murphy that Peter Dislikes the Archie comics...I don't see how he could though since he as well had a hand in creating allot of the characters as well as cover art.

Raph with an eye patch

I'm suprised no one has mentioned that Raph with an eye patch really did start with Mirage in the back up story for Michaelangelo Christmas Special. It's a homage to "A Christmas Carol" and the ghost of Christmas future takes Raph to see his older self that's alone living in a swamp, his mind has degenerated so much he can't even talk.

Andrew NDB 06-30-2007 10:55 PM

Talbot also did a beautiful painting of Future Mirage Raph where, like in the Mike special, he has the eyepatch and lives on the bayou.

Even Peter Laird himself did a sketch. Think it's in his Blast from the Past archive.

This issue should be fascinating. I've always wondered if we might get some breadcrumbs that might hint what leads Raph to this path.

The Shelf 07-01-2007 12:21 PM

Just something I thought might be worth noting.... In that backup story from the Mike Micro, Raph sees himself in the future if he continued down the path he was going. I think the point of that whole backup story, though, was to help keep Raph from going down that path to begin with. So while this new story leads us to believe that Raph still has his eye damaged or lost, it is not necessary that Raph goes all primitive and lives in the swamp like that backup story showed. I know this is rather off topic, and I don't know if anyone was really even suggesting that he would still live in the swamp someday, but I thought this was worth noting just as FYI.

Scandia 07-01-2007 12:34 PM

I don't think it is necessarily off topic.

And it would ROCK if NinjaTurtles.com would upload the Raphael story from the Michelangelo reprint. That's a rather hard comic to find. Gotta check where the story fits in the canon.

Nah, it's really not hard to find. I found 9 on eBay doing a quick search and NinjaTurtles.com still sells it, too.

Did he really change that much after the events of that story in particular, though?

He may have whos to say we've even seen raph at that point in his life yet with how Mirage is anymore with jumping all over their life time.

By no means am I saying it's set in stone... but unless we're willing to say that the whole bit was just in his head, it reasons to say that's how he'd end up if he doesn't set himself to rights.

Does he do so? Possibly.

Well, that's the point. We don't know. I think it's safe to assume that he did because he didn't want to become that once he had seen it. But we don't know how much he changed, if at all. All I'm saying is that since he has seen the future, he may try not to let that aspect of it happen. From the looks of it, the only aspect of that future that seems set in stone is that he loses an eye or has it damaged.

EDIT: Erm, yeah, I just realized you pretty much said the same thing in your last post....

I have it! One of those things that I randomly picked up when it came out, even though I wasn't following Mirage at the time, just the Archie series...I'm glad I did! If I can manage to get access to a scanner at work I'll scan the little extra Raph story...is it allowed to post it here? If not, I guess I could email it to those who want to read it. It's pretty cool, I always liked it.

Roseangelo 07-06-2007 03:33 PM

Murphy has posted a preview of page 1:

The Shelf 07-07-2007 11:37 AM

Looks mighty fine to me. :D

I really wish they'd use those solid grey tones more often. I prefer those or the crosshatching over the "dot" tones. That's just me, though.

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy 07-10-2007 04:06 PM

I think this "Silent Knight" will be a two-parter. After all, it's a Christmas Eve issue, Murphy is working on both 40 and 41, and it's set to come out in November.

diegojourdan 07-11-2007 11:41 PM

As far as i know it's a one-shot story only...but i'd love to illustrate as many Tales issues as possible :D

SWEET!

Can someone translate the article? I see it mentions Comic-Con at the end... you aren't by chance going to be there, Diego?

Janus Prospero 07-23-2007 11:17 PM

I'm suprised I'm beating Roseangelo and Putrescent to this, but Murph has posted an interior page from tales #40 on his blog. And it look fantastic!

http://bp0.blogger.com/_gb-JVVPbQkU/.../tmnt14-15.jpg

Of course, this is when one of them tells me that they already posted about this in the top secret thread.

VaughnMichael 07-23-2007 11:22 PM

I just saw it a second ago ;) & it's beautiful.

Roseangelo 07-23-2007 11:26 PM

While I haven't posted about it, I did see it earlier today. :tcool: :tthumbsu:

Inperfect translation to the article in Jourdan's blog. Personal comments are in brackets:

Quote:

Rafael Valles, writing for La Tercera: These days, the Ninja Turtles’ adventures are born in Santiago, at the drawing table and computer of Diego Jourdan (29), Uruguayan artist living here [Chile] since 1991, and who today is part of the team of illustrators for the comic books starring the turtles, who this year have gone through a revival of sorts with the release of a CGI film which returned them to the big screen.

Jourdan works from his home for the North American Mirage Studios, owners of the turtle franchise. That is how he draws covers and stories for the Tales of the TMNT comic book, as well as the official film adaptation.

“I try to make them [the turtles, or comic books—the article isn’t clear] more expressive; at the narrative level I like to exaggerate the foreshortening [I’m not sure if that’s the right word—it’s the right translation for the word “escorzo”, but it doesn’t seem to make sense, within the context] and to place them in more dramatic situations,” says the artist, a professional graphic designer who studied digital diagramming in the United States. “Technically, ’m transitioning towards digital drawing, inking, and coloring, although sometimes I still use carbon pencil, for nostalgia if nothing else,” adds the illustrator, whose local works include newspapers and comic books like Sicario [I’m not sure about this one—it could be Scario].

But his days are not limited to drawing Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, the reptiles-turned-urban heroes and martial arts experts due to radioactive mutation. “Occasionally, Mirage allows my to plot the stories. It seems to have gained me good standing as a creator among the more hard-core fans of the series,” explains Diego Jourdan, one of several local talents who are currently working on comic books for the North American market (see sidebar) and one who gains greater experience for it.

The Uruguayan’s previous U.S. work includes characters such as Felix the Cat and Image series Fused; his work for Mirage Studios also includes designs for Ninja Turtles action figures and other merchandising. Currently, he also draws children’s comic strips for the North American editorial Blue Dream Studios, which will release the volume called Pet Robots during the San Diego Comic-Con this August.

Hmm.. One has to wonder who that wee one is that Raph's protecting from those er futuristic looking foot soldiers. Hmm... if this is supposed to be Future Raph from Archie...then perhaps that's April's great granddaughter?

No, I believe it's just an abandoned child that he finds. He's in Tokyo and the kid is Japanese.

And yup, "escorzo" means foreshortening, and the reporter got the toys and merchandising thing wrong, though according to Murph I AM 'on deck' for upcoming licensing illustrations and style-guide work.

As for PET ROBOTS: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/097...340_pe_snp_824
