I'm diggin those covers as well... perhaps I shall print them out and do something with them.

Damn those Bulgarians -- always showing up Americans with their dramatic artwork that blows ours the f*ck out of the water.

And they didn't even have to make new stuff from scratch. They used existing material and portrayed it in a new (improved) light.

That is far more impressive than if they had drawn their own artwork. It's intense without betraying the actual maturity level (late elementary school to sixth grade, let's face it) of the show. I know this ain't no BTAS, but I would feel no need to hide this from grown-up, mature, non-TMNT fans by keeping it in a box under my bed.

I've been in the graphic design field for 10 years now and those are by far some of the laziest designs I've ever seen and from a visual standpoint they're not even appealing at all.
The new art work that they are having commissioned for the season sets are by far the most superior designs out of any TMNT dvds thus far, even with the old toon set's attempting to be creative with the box shapes a few times.

These though, these are like they went to Ninjaturtles.com took some clip art and slopped it all together, I hate lazy generic art.
Sure from a business point of view it probably costs them less to do but I'm not a business man I'm an artist and I come from the view point that everything you do should be 100% original all the time.
Oh well *shruggs* just thought I'd through my 10 cents out there, don't spend it all in one place.

You seem to forget all about the original DVDs from America, which also relied heavily on clipart, but were nowhere as as appealing as these images. To put it bluntly, they sucked nematodes.

That's what makes these such a pleasant surprise. Even though a simple attempt (there's a difference between simple and lazy) this looks so much better compared to our "arrangements" of clipart. People with rare skill and sensibility can be "lazy" and still make great stuff. Not that I'm one of them, but I have witnessed such mofos in action.

Normally this isn't supposed to work. But I'm not so obstinate I'll get in a huff when someone does break the rules, successfully. Let's compare them to other forms of laziness , shall we?

Bulgarian "laziness"...
The new artwork for the season sets is no doubt better than this -- but not by much, considering it has to be more complicated and more costly to be effective. I say the Bulgarian artworkis more impressive because "redrawing" completely new artwork is often easier than creating a successful collage. You have a blank canvas to work with. You are free and unbounded. With collage, you have limitations. That's why most people avoid it. It's hard to do well and do simply at the same time.

At least the work from the latter looks like professional collage, rather than elementary school posters.

BTW, Michael Eisner was in the animation field for almost twenty years.

And let me ask exactly what dvd's are these, by that I mean in relation to the USA releases?
Because I think only then can you make a fair judgement of which cover art is the better of the 2.

I mean do you know what you're talking about? You obviously don't have the dvd's or you would have known that, you should get your facts straight before making fun of something that wasn't even used.
I also love how you went through and picked the worst covers and didn't choose any of the really great ones.
And these dvd covers you're calling better have been done before by people here in america they've been used ased desktop backgrounds.
So trust me when I say they just are being lazy I mean it because they're taking something that was already done and just slapped it on.

Damn it looks like Raph doesn't get any love in Bulgaria....looks like the other turtles, and even shredder, gets there 'spotlight' cover.

Okay, so the only example that was not clipart was the lava monster. Oops. Forgive me Putrescent. I will take the time to scan in my AMERICAN DVDs that are without a doubt made from clipart (except for Turtles in Space which still looks godawful). I will then go out of my way to track down said clipart on the ninja turtles site to prove my case.

And I didn't say they "looked better" than the NEW original artwork on the American DVDs... I said they did a superior job with clip art (comparing clip art with clip art), which I still think is much harder to do (and hence more impressive) than draw a a brand-new cover. I didn't say it looked better than the brand-new original cover art. I said that this looked good too. Not visually better than. Good. Acceptable. The fact that it was both clip art AND acceptable all at once was what I found so praiseworthy.

But in some ways, it is more appropriate, given the actual quality of the cartoon -- but that's another argument for another day. :D

Ya, even though these are'nt any new artwork or anything, they look better then what we were getting for a long time(I like the the one at the bottom) But what were getting now blows a lot of cartoon dvd covers out of the water. They look great. Almost half my excitement for the the re-releasing of the seasons is to see the box art.

Yes, but as a way to say the US DVD covers are lazy, it was eventually used for a 2 episode disk 4kids later released. I've seen the 4 releases at Dollar General.

I'm not trying to be argumentative at all, I think we both can agree that in an artistic standpoint Catalog Clip Art sucks no matter what it is or how it's used.
But you don't need to scan them silly cdnow.com has photos of most and if you own them you know what the covers look like.
Not every single one of the 2k3 first run dvd's are clip art though, many of them have art used only for those dvds, That was my point.
The ones Gobo posted have indeed been used before in the form that they are shown on those dvd covers, hence my lazy comment.

No contest... But, no one was claiming otherwise. The original idea was that I just found it surprising that any official DVD covers were ever made with the fugly old cliparts that aren't embarassing.

I dunno... The fact that I haven't enjoyed new Muppets productions since then tells me it wasn't such a good thing.

psh, as if the Henson kids were doing anything besides trying to make them hip and trendy, quite frankly I'm glad the gangs not there anymore with the direction Henson is taking the new things they're doing, everything is so extreme now.
Disney is working on a brand new movie, they have a brand new website www.muppets.com incase you didn't know, Season 3 box set comes out next month, and there is a rumor of a new tv show in the works as well.
So things just take time, and this new movie is a buzz all over the net and radio already.

It's a little thing called inflation. It just finally made it's way to internet forums.

On another note, I have to agree with Putrescent. While the box art looks good, but it's nothing new. It's been on ninjaturtles.com for a few years.

This stuff is kinda cool to look at I guess, but they don't really make great DVD covers at all.

Those covers are lazy and bland. They're just a piece of artwork with a bunch of black around it. For God's sake the 3rd and 5th ones even use the same piece of artwork.

I like the current season set covers better, definitely.

Ergh...I don't know where to stand on those Bulgarian covers. While it looks really slick and nice, the art is just simple stock art with a few Photoshop filters thrown over the top. On the other hand, the US versions have some more original art on the covers...yet it looks a bit messy. Cluttered. Then again, that's just me. I've never really liked how cluttered the US box art looked, but oh well.

Ive only been a graphic designer for 3 years, but when I look at something i dont look at it as a graphic designer. I just look at effectiveness and appeal. Personally, the US versions i've never been too keen on. They just have a vibe to them that I never liked. (granted, season 1 with tmnt on one side and foot on the other actually turned out pretty cool.) But I like the sharp simplicity of the Bulgaria ones. Imaging those with a sleek polish and foil, that would be even more sexy. The US ones are just too vibrant for my tastes, and too inconsistant. Sometimes its 3 pics with a sewer background, sometimes it has a metal background, sometimes its a lava monster, etc... I understand they are relating the actual content of the story, but even then, the layouts of all this changes so wildy it just doesnt look right. Ever lay out all the tmnt dvds in a row? Some look very out of place. At least the other ones seem consistant, without revealing the story.
