Did anyone else think the idea of turning Shredder into an Utrom was too much?
Did anyone else hate the idea of turning Shredder into an Utrom in the new episodes? I personally thought that idea was too over the top and they should have kept him as a human.
If they needed an Utrom, why didn't they just write Krang back into the series? Krang was a good character. :) |
I thought it was a nice twist that I wouldn't have seen coming if I hadn't seen spoilers here. Although, it was painfully obvious all through Secret Origins what they were leading up to...though I still love those episodes.
|
They didn't need an utrom, they needed something to differentiate the series a bit more from the comics. Besides, the episode aired in 2003, get over it.
|
I also liked it because it added a different twist to all of the stories, since so many of the early episodes were coming from the comics. And, most importantly, it allowed for Leonardo to cut off Shredder's head at the end of Return to New York. That was one of the most awesome things ever.
|
When that was first revealed I originally didn't like it because the fact that the suit was mostly a robot and not a human ninja master kind of bothered me at first. However in Season 3 they kept the Oroku Saki side of him still in the series, so I warmed up to the idea and got over it.
I also liked how Season 5 proved the original Oroku Saki actually existed as part of the Ninja Tribunal, so in the end it didn't matter. |

But seriously, I thought the concept of Ch'rell was original at the very least. I have no problem with it. It did take some getting used to but it added originality to the series. Like rose said, it was among the first concepts to deviate from the comics and develop a sense of identity. Quote:

Though in a way didn't bringing in the 'real' Oroku Saki into the story later kinda cheapen the effect for the Ultrom Shredder. This makes all the cool comic events like Saki killing Yoshi and the Return to New York thing kinda lame since they were done by an impostor Shredder. Hell Karai was crying over what Hun would call 'an alien squid'. And had it been the real Shredder all along (a demon instead of an Utrom) it makes that much more sense for Yoshi to appear at the end to help them end it all.

I didn't mind it at all. The comics, movies, and OT had him as a human. If I want human Shredder I can watch and read those.

But then again, I'm known to read way too much into stuff. :P |
I think they overdid it, but I later accepted the fact he's an utrom. It's not like anybody could magically change that.
|
I remember there were riots over the Utrom/Shredder connection, but I thought it was clever as hell. Plus, I kinda saw it as a nod to the incarnation of the franchise that made it as well-known as it is today.

though I liked it a lot more before I leanred he was an utrom. Actually when chrell stood up an walked away after leo severed his head, it cheapened the moment. for me anyway. course, what can you expect? it's a kids show
|
As soon as the exosuit stands up and gets its head, it was a BIG hint to the Utrom connection. I thought it was clever too. It made this series unique in that. The comics have the Shredder dead and appearing in only four issues, the old toon has him as a whiny human, a powerful Utrom was the only logical next step lol
|
I had read about this ahead of time so I was prepared. At first I thought it was odd. But upon watching 2k3 I do realize it can be worked out quite well.
|
I agree

Personally, I find objection at this point to be pointless. In the grand scheme of things....
Shredder isn't a person. It's a title that gets passed down. hense why Karai is the Shredder now. He was just posing as Saki/Shredder to gain his infamy and not having to establish his own evil rep. As the Tribunal said, the events happened for a reason. Without him becoming Saki, he wouldn't have killed Yoshi, leaving the rat and the turtles to mutate in New York. All the while, the Utroms transporting him lead to the mutation of the turtles. Which as we all know, after all this time, they defeated the True Shredder. I like how they planned this all out, long drawn plot line for the series. And by the way, they DID bring Krang back. but as a brief cameo. And I think that cameo was well worth the joke. |
I didn't like it all, I preferred old Shredhead.
|
I don't. He was too whiny to even think of fitting in to this series. DrTooth nailed it though. Shredder is a title. I do like how you said "not having to establish his own evil rep". Makes Ch'rell kind of a lazy punk
|
He is though. :P That's why I thought that thread suggesting he was a mad scientist was just plain laughable.
|
Ever multitask and post at the same time? You skip something you wanted to add. :)
To Drtooth and odupianist: You mentioned "shredder was his title instead of his name;" and you're right. I meant to add a note on that myself when I first posted the thread, but I was multitasking when I hit the "post" button. :)
|
you can always edit a post after you hit that button if you think of something you wanted to add. I do the same thing often.
|
At first I objected to the thought of Shredder being an Utrom, but I think it was just shock over the idea of the Shredder ever being something other than human, and I quickly grew to like it.
Now, the revelation that there was a tengu demon Shredder before him from the Lost Season, that I could live without. That was too much for me. What are they gonna do next, reveal that the tengu demon Shredder was actually a creation from Kirby's pencil? |

The idea of Shredder being an Utrom bothered me at first, but then I realized it came like a refreshment and I accepted it. Although the human Shredder will always be my absolute favorite! ;) |
Shredder being a UTROM was not too much. But I thought The Silver Sentry and the city knowing about him was a bit overboard.

^Exactly. What made the Turtles aluring is that they existed in out world, and are hidden in the shadows. Our world doesn't have superheroes flying around skyscrapers and being publicized on the news.
|
I think I worded it wrong when I posted the thread. Instead of "too much" I guess I meant to put "confusing as all getout." Oh, and amen, Warhorse! Women like us rock! :)
|
Of course us ladies rock! I've been called Warhorse since I was a preteen. I got into some pretty fierce fights and debates in school that carried on through adult hood. I dont get into physical fights, but verbally, I can still make people cry when my buttons are pushed.
One of the things I didn't like about Shredder being a Utrom, is for some reason, didn't make him so threatening anymore. I think what could be cool, is that the Foot and The Shredder and Karai are actually fighting for a more evil being we haven't been introduced yet. Since we have superheroes and spirits, why not bring in some sort of god like warlord to wreck havok. Kind of like Sauron from LOTR or Darth Sidious (Shredder was akin to Darth Vader) |
They did. It was called the Tengu Shredder. Granted, they weren't working ofr him, but still...
|
The only possible reason I can think of that they decided to make the Shredder an Utrom was because they were scared they might lose viewers (or run out of ideas) if they don't have the Shredder on the show. And then they realized how boring the Shredder got as an Utrom (Ch'rell cheapened everything that made the Shredder work), so they put him away and tried to fix everything by doing the whole demon shredder thing (which IMO totally didn't work). If they had just let him stay dead when Leo cut his head off (or simply done it as in the comics, where he was killed offscreen), there wouldn't have been a problem and all would've been awesome and the Shredder would have been remembered as one kick-ass human villain...but no, they had to flog that dead horse right into the ground.
But after all the crap that's happened since (namely Fast Forward), I must say Utrom Shredder was a relatively small shark to jump. I'm slightly worried about Cyber Shredder though. Can't they just leave the Shredder behind and move on? There's always tons of other ninja. Karai, the Foot, former Foot elite, et.c., and there's always the possibility of bringing in new characters and threats. |
I just wish they would have explained the worms a bit better in one of the episodes. Viewers who aren't familiar with the worms probably woudn't understand how ch'rell came back to life after being blown to bits

I was a little weirded out, because I heard about it before I got into the 2K3 series, but now that I've watched it all, I'm in love with the idea.
It really ties all of the threads together. |
