Director's Cut of TMNT (1990)?

http://the-5th-turtle.blogspot.com/2...ake-on-me.html

Take a look at what's going down over at The 5th Turtle! Apparently, the director of the first TMNT movie is interested in doing a director's cut with special features and using lost footage that he has personal copies of for the DVD!

Of course, this isn't set-in-stone just yet. Somehow, this feels kind of like a "test the waters" sort of deal. So, if you're interested in seeing this, you should definitely head over there and voice your opinion on a Special Edition of the first TMNT movie. Mayhaps a large enough response will get word to WB about getting this out on the shelves for us!

YES YES YES YES! THIS IS LONG OVER DUE, like many of my library books..:fshifty:

Kendamu 08-05-2008 01:03 PM

Agreed! Spread the word! Comment on T5T, post in forums, blog it, and all kinds of other stuff. Advertise the need for this out the shell!

Hey... they missed the boat the first time by not releasing it to hype up the TMNT film, I really hope this time we see something. Please Warners... you owe this to us. Director's cut special editions of movies that deserve it Not Big Mama's House 4 or something to promote a terrible sequal to a movie that shouldn't have been made in the first place.

DIRECTORS CUT TMNT 1 IN 2009!!!!

YES!!!! YES!!!! It's been time!

turkishproverb 08-05-2008 05:40 PM

Yes. Its about time. Love it. And the suction cup alternate ending is probably the one they're talking about.

sdp 08-05-2008 05:56 PM

Tons of people my age really enjoy the live action movies, its not just a fandom thing. I was indeed surprised that the movies were not released last year with the movie..

Besides doesn't the first movie have a glitch? There is one part in the movie where it seems like it stopped, at first I thought it was the dvd but I exchanged it and it had the same problem so it appears to be a problem in the disc. Would like to see special editions of the other two as well.

The Green Ranger 08-05-2008 08:23 PM

I was waiting to see if they'd release special editions around the time the newer movie was coming out, but they never did. We need SE of the whole trilogy, but this is a great first step!

Buslady 08-05-2008 10:17 PM

I want i want i want i want i want i want i want i want i want i want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude! this is the happiest news I have ever heard! :D

TristanHuwJones 08-06-2008 12:50 AM

The first live action movie still stands as one of my favourite movies ever, and easily one of the best comic book movies of all time. I think with the 25th Anniversary happening next year, WB would be stupid to ignore something like this! This HAS to happen! It'd be really cool to see some extras talking about the comic books as well as the films. Kind of a comparative retrospective, with interviews with everyone over at Mirage! That would be cool!

Yeah, this is an opportunity that need not be passed up. Too bad that the ball was dropped on the Star Wars 30th Anniversary. It was so underwhelming. We might have this TMNT Special Edition (and I hope LOADS of features) to make up for that.

Ramboraph4life aka Matt 08-06-2008 02:15 AM

I don't see it happening...25th anniversary or not, I'm 100% certain this'll never happen cause the higher ups at that studio just...don't...care.

If I sound negative, I'm sorry...you can just call me the name that rhymes with lasso. But I've been wanting this for so long, and burned too many times, that I'm pretty much set in it never coming to be.

I know this is about 'first steps' and what have ya...but again I've just been burned too many times and now I'm completely cynical on this whole subject. If I gotta be, so be it.

And online petitions never work, blogging never works...nothing of that kind has ever worked. The studio probably doesn't even remember the first film, and for it being a $135 million blockbuster (in 1990 dollars at that) it would be a shoo-in in sales. Lion's Gate did a 2 disc for Monster Squad (a flick that wasn't even a hit back in the day, but it's still a good flick) and did that one justice, yet the studios can't think through their pea-brains that a movie that was A). A blockbuster success and the most successful independent film at the tiem and B.) A cultural film (aka the general audience still remembers it) would make the moo-lah for them on DVD.

I'll be posting more info on my blog over the coming weeks and months, but for starters you can read this.

I've also started a MySpace account that I'll be cross-posting to over time.

I agree that this is a long shot, but I think now's the time to get loud and vocal about it if we ever want a chance of this happening. It can't happen with just the group of us here; it has to go more mainstream. So put the word out as much as you can, especially to any non-TMNT forums where there might be crossover interest.

Archon_Turtle 08-06-2008 02:38 AM

http://www.theturtlevan.com will also be doing what it can :-)

Kendamu 08-06-2008 03:12 AM

Raphroehler2003, just remember to not buy a copy when it finally comes out. I don't wanna have someonthing rip you off your homework of planet Wbatcouldabeen prematurely.

twopinacoladas 08-06-2008 06:11 AM

Like I posted on Murphs blog, when me and my friends were at Walmart last night there were a tone of copies of the first 3 turtle movies. They are still selling them and still making money off those movies. Why not make a special edition they could discontinue the other ones and or more people who have the original may buy them. I know I would buy them no question, Im sure others who dont have the origingal or only have the VHS tapes would probably pick up the special edition over the old dvd. Plus they could charge more and hence make more money then they do for the standard dvds.

Tinuvielsdreams 08-06-2008 08:11 AM

Damn I am late to the celebration! I am incredibly happy to hear this of course! Good news first thing in the morning. I was just checking out your myspace Rose :D and the other blogs. Its great everyone!

Just because one studio won't release it doesn't mean another won't. I see this working solely because the push to re-release everything Bluray is happening. Now is the time if there ever was one.

I'm really hoping that they release it on Blu, just so they can make a special edition regular DVD. I mean, if the director has a collection of stuff behind the scenes, and bloopers, and stuff like that, it's possible.

Even Beetlejuice is getting a special edition, with bonus cartoon episodes.

Buslady 08-06-2008 09:51 AM

I don't know much about blue-ray, someone educate me. Can they format old movies to it? I thought newer movies shot with digital or a really high resolution film could be Bluray?

Spitfire 08-06-2008 09:58 AM

Well your right newer movies are in some cases shot with higher resolution but most are still shot the old fashion way and transfered to a computer to be edited.

HD is a process of uping the quality on a movie. It's not as hard to do as one would imagine. Remember back when Lucas remastered Star Wars? He up'd the quality on it by a lot and that was before HD was even thought of. That's what they did to movies when they were put onto DVD I believe. How they do HD I'm not completely sure but it's an up convert process. It has something to do with turning the movie into a digital format and using a converter or compressor to up the quality.

Speaking of Bluray players still play DVDs so rebuying your collection wouldn't really be needed. Also if this turtles movie does come out it'll be in upconvert format for the DVD so you can play it on an HDTV in HD still. It won't technically be as good looking but in all honesty I've seen both and I hardly see the littlest difference. But I don't have a huge HDTV mines a 32 inch.

Kendamu 08-06-2008 10:13 AM

There is now a MySpace page and a Facebook group containing a lot of the latest info on the matter:

Take a look, join/friend, and get in on the action!

EDIT: Whoops! Looks like Rose beat me to it with the MySpace link!

Extreme_Enigma 08-06-2008 11:47 AM

Now THIS is what we need. Please make the Special Edition Director's Cut DVD.
It's perfect for the 25th anniversary. I'm crossing all my fingers.

A "drector's cut" aka Special Edition is a loaded DVD with cut scenes, behind the scenes, added scenes into the movie, and any other related material to the movie.

Spitfire 08-06-2008 09:07 PM

Technically speaking it's the cut of a movie the director himself intended people to see. It may contain scenes that weren't in the first release and sometimes shorter scenes. Directors cut can be totally different from the original.

What Buslady described is an Unrated or Extended Cut which is where they toss in everything that wasn't used. Most of the time their pointless scenes that make the movie drag on or their just extra fighting or gore that wasn't in the normal release. Their almost never better. Some directors get mad like Ridely Scott did when they re-released "Alien" with footage he didn't think needed to be in the film.

That's why I'd like to see a "Director's Cut" and not just an "Extended Version."

TMNT 08-07-2008 11:30 AM

For years, we've heard and seeen numerous things that would make us believe there is an alternate version of this film out there. But to finally hear the director openly state it (I'm not sure if he has before), it'd be a real shame if Warner Bros. didn't act on it now.

I know it's too early but besides a rough cut and some extra scenes, I'd love a commentary track by the director (he seems eager to bring it back so it'd be fitting) and perhaps a reunion track from Judith and Elias. Perhaps even the voice actors could do a track. This DVD would be worth every penny if done right. Let's just hope it all works out.

And since it's been brought up, do you think they'd release Special Editions of the two sequels. Granted, their directors haven't put any word out, but I'm sure if WB goes ahead with one, they may release the others. In the end, it's about money and I'm sure they'll sell well.

So, we could just wind up with the movie with extra scenes either added to the film itself otr as "deleted/alternate" sequences?

It would be great to have some of the British sequences that weren't in the movie as bonus features. I know there had to have been some alternate takes.

And BTW, I just signed up for the Turtles Special Edition site myself. We need as many people as possible, right?

Yeah unless he plans to re-edit and really doctor it up the point where it's noticeable I'd say it's better to leave all that crap as a bonus feature. That or put both versions of the film on the disk. I also think they should include the script that has the scenes that weren't filmed in it as a bonus.
