Official Episode Discussion: "The Engagement Ring"

Greetings, My precious...

Once again, I propose to you another eye-rolling teaser for this week's upcoming episode. Let's hope this plot won't bring you to your knees...

*ducks tomatoes*

Okay, so this week (according to TVGuide), Casey's getting ready to pop the question to the lovely April O'neil (much to Donnie's inner chagrin, I'm sure). So whom better to go with Casey to the jewelers for ring shopping than... Raph.

...What? Raph just doesn't seem the type to be looking a pretty sparkly Dainty lil diamond rings. Can you imagine the poor jeweler seeing these two come into the store, and being told, "We're here for an engagement ring."? My first thought would be to look at the hunched over trenchcoat wearing 'beauty' with the chain-smoker voice and ask Casey 'what the hell are you thinking?'

...but I digress.

So, Raph and Casey are checking out the rings. Big rings, small rings, simple, complex... hundreds of options to choose from. My opinion would be a simple gold ring with a three stone grouping.

Instead of this, they pick out something unique.

http://coosacreek.org/mambo/wp-conte...2/one-ring.jpg

...you would think if the ring is floating and surrounded by FIRE... they would look at each other and say "Hmm... this might not be a good idea." But this is Raph and Casey we're talking about.

So they take the ring, not knowing the Evil that's connected to it. Thiis attracks the interest of Hun and the ever popular Purple Dragons. Are we going to see Hun denegrate into this nasty big version of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings? Or are they gonna go a different route (aka movie reference), and start crawling out of April's TV to get her soul?

And while they're messing around with apocalyptic jewelry, what's going on with the other turtles? Are they still diligently searching for the remaining fragments of Splinter? Is Donnie slowly turning into a caffee-drinking, brain-fried homocidal insomniac with his relentless struggle to return his father to normal and end his torment of guilt?

And what of this Ring? Will they have to destroy the ring, or could Donnie take that evil power and transform it into something he could use for his mission? Or is this too outlandish an idea? Heck, this is a show about mutant ninja turtles traveling the internet...

Who knows! And as I close out, I will leave you with the questions, yet again...

WILL CASEY POP THE QUESTION TO APRIL IN THIS EPISODE?!
WILL SHE SAY YES?!
WILL HUN AND THE PD's RETRIEVE THE RING FOR THEIR OWN SEEDY PURPOSES?!
HOW LONG WILL I BE ABLE TO TYPE LIKE THIS BEFORE I GET YELLED AT?!

STAY TUNED!!!

VaughnMichael 10-04-2008 08:03 AM

This was much much much much better than last week!
Even if there are allot of stereo types floating around lol
It also seems for some odd reason that the art is much better in this episode than the previous ones, or am I the only one that noticed this?
You know it's odd I seem to enjoy the show when it has less to do with the turtles or just one turtle.
Ok possessed April is awesome! I want a toy of that lol what makes her even more awesome is that she created the 2 figures we've yet to see in stores (thanks Playmates).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ious/Batty.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...hious/Mole.jpg
I was very excited to see them, it's a shame it all ended so quickly.
Did I say yet how much I enjoyed this episode?
It's crazy how they showed Casey hitting her with the trash can, I can't believe they got away with that.
It also sounds like Hun's voice is back to how it was before.
Geez this just keeps getting better and better, I love that Dark possessed version of April.
I keep thinking 2 things while watching this episode that it reminds me of something that would be in an Archie TMNT Adventures issue & the other thing is boy Playmates are seriously idiots not to be making toys based on this series but what they do anymore does not surprise me at all.
The only thing that surprised me with this episode was the fact that we didn't see Cyber Shredder or the Foot at all.
I think over all this was one of the best episodes from the ones we've seen so far as it had allot to offer and added allot to the story line.

Casual Matt 10-04-2008 08:12 AM

Yeah, the animation seemed somewhat nice in this episode.

It was nice to see Hun with his old voice back. I really hope they go back and apply the effect to his voice in future DVD releases of Season 5 and 6.

Also, am I nuts or did the weapons that Hun used look like Bishop's tech? Probably stolen from one of Bishop's convoys. The Purple Dragons were heisting military tech from Bishop in Season 4, afterall.

This season also seems to be pushing what they can show on a kids show again, if only by a little. Hitting April with a trashcan, an onscreen kiss, and Hun practically saying he was going to cut off April's finger all took me by surprise. Especially that last one. Seems like the only controversial elements of the last season at all were the implications that Dunn wanted to kill his nephew.

This season is definitely shaping up to be great.

Drtooth 10-04-2008 08:15 AM

Epic. Freaking epic! How long has it been since we've seen a Casey/Raph episode? Only thing that came close was that segment in "The Notebook." This is a moment I was looking forward to since FF started up. Casey and Raph back together in action. Even if this was a lousy episode, they'd make it work.

I guess the fact that we know they're getting married was a little drop in the surprise... though I thought they'd do it much, much later. Not on the series, when they were in their 30's or something. Though, I guess this is why they didn't want to include that sequence in the movie.

Anyone else think that Hun trying to justify that he didn't really destroy the turtles was precious? "No,... that's a clown in a Turtle suit... or a clone...or a... never mind!" And props to Casey for still going through with the engagement when April when she was shouting about the dishes. Possession or not, all I could think of is hair curlers and rolling pins... BONK!

And I agree... a Monster April figure would kick so much shell. Too bad they aren't gonna get their rears in gear and make some great BTTS stuff like they planned with FF.

I will say, that final exchange between Donny and Mikey about how that guy reminds him of Splinter was kind of a drag. Yeah, we know you're guilty about it, and you're doing all you can (hopefully between episodes) but we get the idea.

Aneras713 10-04-2008 08:31 AM

Good ep, I like it. The look Casey had when Raph talked to him about the marriage was kind of funny:lol:

Hun's face was worth some chukles when he saw Raph, and I liked Raph's comment about being "best man material".

Mikey's joke about being maid of honor at the end was so stupid, I thought Raph or someone would've smacked him.

ToTheNines 10-04-2008 08:46 AM

This one really picked up fast, I was banging my head against the wall while Casey acted like a dill-weed trying to propose. I know it's a kids show, but god.

Then Raph's half assed disguise... he talked to the old guy face to face, a shift towards the OT in a bad way.

But still the best episode yet, so I'm happy.

Cipher 10-04-2008 09:13 AM

Best episode of the season. It was fun, it had its little shockers (threatening to cut of fingers is just rude), and the animation was the best we've seen in a while.

Also cool to see how far the Purple Dragons have progressed towards being a legitimate crime syndicate.

Oh, and we finally got a glimpse of that mole mutant. I guess they wanted him in there to advertise a future toy release. I was kind of hoping he'd be an actual mutant. It would've been a throwback to one of the better elements of the old toon.

gobo 10-04-2008 09:16 AM

The writers were trying too hard to make Raph funny. That was rather lame. But, I enjoyed the ep overall. If that actually was Mansley's interpretation of Hun, my mind is thoroughly blown to bits. :o That was just too perfect. I liked Mikey's lone joke at the end. I think his humor is just easily overdone. That's why it usually pisses us all off.

Drtooth 10-04-2008 09:18 AM

I wanna add, I'm glad the writers remembered Casey's Gretzky fandom!

gobo 10-04-2008 09:37 AM

Oh, the trashcan thing... Did it not make anyone else roll their eyes? I applaud them for having the gumption to play the 'desperate times call for desperate measures' card, but magically-enhanced, possessed April was looking right at the thing as it was being thrown. Is this the limitations of those powers? They just have no defense against garbage? Gimme a break.

So, I think I'll put this one as my second favorite BttS ep, right under "Karate Schooled". Just a few too many lame jokes (and they weren't Mikey's this time).

TerranigmaFreak 10-04-2008 09:37 AM

Very good episode. There's nothing more to add... except for the design of April's monster form. I really hate it. When she flew into the air, I got a Winx Club vibe out of it. Uck.

Me too. I had more problem with that than the fact that they got away with it. I thought he would slip the trash can over her head or something. I can't believe she couldn't dodge or blast it. At least they should have turned her around so she's couldn't see it in time to dodge or do anything.

CyberCubed 10-04-2008 10:53 AM

Great episode, probably the best of the season.

So all those other Purple Dragon died when April blew up the helicopter? We didn't get a "I can see their parachutes!" type of line.

Overall I really liked this episode, the darkness from the previous seasons returned such as Hun threatening to cut off April's finger and a lot of other moments.

I hope this show gets a Season 8, I really love this animation and I want to see it continue. Here's hoping when Laird announces the 5th movie 4kids renews it for another season.

maryshine 10-04-2008 10:53 AM

Masc (sorry I can't recall the rest of your name!) you do an awesome job of reviewing! Keep it up!

As for "Engagment Ring," I loved it! I screamed with delight when Casey poped the question!

Even though it was a Raph/Casey episode, I'm glad they had the rest of the turtles there.

So, which "Shreeder," Do you think Hun was refering to? Tengu, Uton, or Cyber? I'm assuming it is the Cyber, I don't know.

Also, do you think Karai will be back next week? I hope so! I want to see her and Kluck the cat back!

Raph's Girl 10-04-2008 11:09 AM

OMG I loved this ep!! Casey's proposal to April was very sweet. He looked hot in the tux but the top hat was a bit much. *L*

I have a feeling that the Mr. Myagi type dude will show up again. Seemed like reacurring character material.

At least we know the origin of the mole rat monster and it seems that the Purple Dragon's have gone up in the world since the foot disbanded.

Of all the locations Casey suggested for the wedding I like the beach one the best. Altho perhaps it'll be in Central Park? Mike wanting to be the maid of honour was weird but maybe he's seen the movie "Made of Honour"???

Quotes:

"And we shall sacrifice Oxen on the alter!" - April

Cure 10-04-2008 11:12 AM

This was a lot better than last week's episode. Did anyone notice that the ring was on her right hand instead of her left? I thought that was odd, haha.

Sage Ninja 10-04-2008 11:35 AM

all right we are back in the saddle with the city based story lines. :D I loved this episde and it was nice to see Hun in it as well. I'm liking his new pimp white outfit, and I'm liking the new purple dragons, although, although I noticed they didn't show any of the girl PD memebers. I was a bit suprised that Hun still has old voice, but I'm happy none the less, I was sure I was going to be alienated by a new voice for so I'm glad he still has the same guy, or if he doesn't the new actor does a bang up job immitating the old actor. I'm glad the plot for this episdoe wasn't some generic stand alone episode and had an actual connection to the over all plot of this season of him wanting the ring to have cahnce against the Shredder coming back, and not some genric "I want to me more pwerful so all will fear me!!!" Though I'm confused on why Hun's afraid of Shredder, he genrally did everything he was told so why the fear? Baxter is the one who reason to worry since he was the one that F*cked Shredder over in season three. But this gives more question on what Karai is up to and why she isn't head of the foot any more.

I'm glad that Casey and Raphael still have their good friendship. I was afraid it was going to be ignored in foavor of getting the plot played out in tihs season but I was happy to see that that they still have that rapport with each other. It wasn't till this episde I realized how much I missed Casey and Raph's friendship, it's little tid bits like this that make the show great. And Casey was just to adorable in this episode, his awkwardness really endeared me in this episode. I've never really been a big fan of the Casey+April realtiosnhip, since I always found them really forced and flat, but this episode really put me in touch with Casey feelings for April and I think I'm starting to like them. He really cares for her abnd I felt that, he showed such concern for her welfare that it ewasheart breaking. The fact that he showed up in a tux and top hat made me chuckle, but I'm glad that he threw out the paper of crap on it and just got down on one knee and told her how he felt from the heart. That proposal got an awww, out of me. Casey showed a wide range of emotions in from concern and helplessness, he really caresfor Arpil so much that he doesn't even want to hurt her even if it's for own good. The Casey sliding the ring off of April finger was well played out, with him struggling and then finnally puting his emoptions into the act. Awsome! I like how this episode focused on Casey and April, it's nice when the show has supporting characters that are dynamic enough where that they can take center stage and the main characters can take a back seat with out the showlosing it impact. And Raphael and the turtles really felt like sidecharacters in this one.

April being posses was cool. April's actor really did a good possed April in this episde, by sounding menacing and evil. I liked how the show made her act like a beast by walking on the cieling and crouching down like an animal. Her oxen sacrifice comet really made her sound demonic, it's too bad they couldn'yt keep her like that because I thought her turning her into a flying bat took away some of her menace. All in all good episde.

More like cliche wise asian material.

Jester 10-04-2008 12:37 PM

Watching it now....I'm gonna do running commentary and I'll spoiler tag it.

Spoiler:
Am I a sap for almost crying at Casey's proposal?

Hun's voice is BACK...BACK TO THE SEWER! Sorry I couldn't resist! And man he is a hard nosed leader, though he's still scared of the Shredder, though he did tangle with the Tengu Shredder.

So Red Kryptonite rings also affect normal humans....:P

April's gone Super-Sayian!

"In my frog suit...ribbit..."

It's one of the New Jersey Mole Men!! (see the Journal)

Leave it to Casey to give April a possessed engagement ring.

I was hoping that they'd comment on Hun's "trophies" and they did....I'm happy.

The Purple Dragons are a biker gang?

So, April's gonna become a monster, unless Casey can take the Ring of Yin off. Oh, boy.

WTH?! April's all big ugly "evil made flesh."

I was wondering if this would be just Raph and Casey, can't say I'm disappointed that the other made a showing.

Mikey was actually funny...and not annoying. Huhzah!

A Teenage Mutant Ninja Best-man? :P

"Just as precious...minus the evil." :D

Ok, they are really playing up the Donnie-angst.

OK, I retract my "Mikey's not annoying" line.

Did Donnie get excited about the wedding, right after being upset about Splinter?

All in all a good episode, but I'm a Raphie fan so I'm biased. :D

X 10-04-2008 12:44 PM

VERY GOOD EPISODE!

Felt like good old seasons 1-5 again to me, but with a lighter tone. I don't mind the lighter tone so long as they keep the balance they have with this season.

PLEASE... DO... NOT... LET... THIS... SHOW... END!!!

I know you see this 4kids... :P

You found a good balance, now work with it for about 5-10 more seasons. :P

-X-

Please tell me you haven't heard the show is going to end after this season. BTW, anyone know what next week's episode is about?

TerranigmaFreak 10-04-2008 12:58 PM

Am I the only one already wondering how they'll handle the Turtles being at their wedding? Unless April only invites a few selected family members, I don't know how they can pull off a wedding with 4 mutant turtles... and most likely a giant rat (maybe even a giant gator). Not to mention Casey's family. Unless they only invite people like Karai, The Shredder, Bishop, Baxter, and Hun to the wedding.

Aska_Badoura 10-04-2008 01:02 PM

I really enjoyed this ep. I'm still not sure what's up with Hun's voice - he sounded the way he originally did, at the beginning, but it seemed like he started straying toward the 'off' voice - is this the same actor? I didn't think his voice was filtered in the first four seasons, but now I'm not sure, and... ah, I give up, heh. His Foot tattoo is gone, good attention to detail. I couldn't quite tell, from the model sheet.

Proposal was 'aww'. I initially protested the dishes-throwing - I just remembered when the Turtles were living with April, and she'd freak out about them breaking the dishes. Then... oh, that explains it.

Donnie. One-track mind. Stoppit. :|

Woot! I have no overly-analytical thoughts this time. But I am pleased. :)

Ninjafromanotherseries 10-04-2008 01:21 PM

Good episode but too bad they had to throw other turtles in during last minutes but it didn“t ruin the episode, I would have just liked to have it, that no turtle appears in every episode but Leo still has this honor.

Much better than cyber-things, and it was nice to see April having more screentime. Too often she has only make few appearances in a episode and Casey has been fighting along guys.

Those two purple dragon in the beginning bared resemblance to Wolverine. Other was short and looked like Wolverine and other had claws as a weapon.

cowabunga14 10-04-2008 01:27 PM

Would have to agree with just about all o' you and say this episode was very good. Everything just seemed to fit and nothing felt pointless. I thought the humor was necessary and a little more than I expected in a good way. The fact that this episode was so different from last week's and didn't really focus on cyber-this and cyber-that, I think, kept me quite engaged. Plus, it didn't seem to mention the Turtles continuing to look for Splinter, which was a welcome change.

I didn't seem to mind the fact that this episode was mostly about Raph and Casey because it gave the writers or whoever a chance to show what's going on with their friendship. And well, the fact that Casey proposed to April, I think, gives the fans a lot to look forward too. I'm glad their relationship is starting to gain significance in this series.

The horror and, I guess, fantasy elements, like April's being possessed, worked quite well and I wouldn't mind seeing more of those elements. For some reason, I thought of The Evil Dead when April was possessed -- probably because of her deep voice and her not very ladylike actions. The monster designs were cool too and I liked how they fit into the aspect of the ring.

Overall, quite a satisfying episode and probably the best thing since sliced bread. In a way, I'm sure the quailty of this episode with carry over into the rest of the series.

Uh.. I don't think they'll go THAT far this season. They'll probably save that for another season. Maybe after they make O'Neil Tech?

terran631 10-04-2008 02:51 PM

*Cracks knuckles* Ok, here we go....

I miss the narration at the opening of every episode..just thought I'd mention.

Hot damn, it's the old guy from the Gremlins! Anyone but me old enough to remember that movie? Seriously, he has to be carrying a mogwai. I could just see Mikey..

MIke: Can we keep him? Can I name him Gizmo?

But I digress. Anyway, yeah, the guy from Gremlins is being chased by Purple Dragons who apparently have nothing better to do than attack innocent mackrels.

And of course the old guy is so used to seeing gremlins that he doesn't blink at Raph's green face or green three fingered hand. But he DOES give them a freaky glowing red ring. Psssh...men. DIAMONDS are for engagement rings, not freaky glowing red ones.

The proposal was the funniest part of the whole season so far.

Casey: I love you as much as Gretsky loves hockey and i wanna play you the rest of my life.

*Mind drops straight to gutter on that one*

And April becomes one of those curler wearing, dish throwing, rolling pin carrying demons. (Not really but that's what it reminded me of when she's throwing dishes and yelling at Casey). Give Casey credit for still wanting to go through with the wedding after seeing April at her worst.

Then a bunch of unimportant stuff happens with monsters and demons etc...

THEN Casey throws a garbage can at April and knocks her off a car!! Dude, as a card carrying non-supporter of April, I CHEERED. But of course he felt bad. Wuss. Enter Hun and I was wondering how he got a sai and..nunchuck maybe? Guess he'd been doin some bragging.

*Agrees with Hun though. THese turtles have GOT to be clones*

Some more unimportant stuff happens and then we get to the end where the other three turtles show up. DUDE! Raph's got a BLUETOOTH! No wonder Don can't fnd Splinter. He's too busy making Bluetooths and helicopters and new trucks. Poor guy. When I get depressed I eat chocolate not make electronics. But we all have our vices.

Ohhh token Splinter mentioning! And Don is reminded that he is supposed to be emo this season (Really that part just sucked and had no real reason for it) Especially considering that not two seconds later everyone is "Oh well! Happy group hug!"

My final conclusion: Loved seeing the guy from Gremlins, and this season should be nicknamed Teenage Mutant Manic-Depressive Turtles.

Scandia 10-04-2008 03:07 PM

Beautiful episode. Nice change from the usual style and plot of the others.

The men's waists are WAY too small and disproportionate. I thought Casey's was small- absolutely nothing compared to Hun's horrendously big chest and pecs and microscopic waist.

Raph centric episode. I'm still waiting for a Leo one. He has not even spoken all that much in this season.

Buffy 10-04-2008 03:12 PM

With this episode the turtles have indeed returned to the sewer! We get purple dragons, Hun and some cool looking monsters. This was definitely the best episode so far.
That part where Hun is stunned to see Raph made me laugh out loud. :)

Aneras713 10-04-2008 03:35 PM

Episode Found On Youtube.

Bry 10-04-2008 04:17 PM

Now that... was pretty damn good! Loved seeing Hun and the Purple Dragons again, the plot was actually pretty cool, and all around it felt like a good, solid episode of the regular series.

The complete absence of the "cyber-world" gimmick probably helped with that. And y'know what? I just realized that Serling was absent from this episode, which kinda shows how forgettable and pointless his character is.

Definitely the best of the season so far, and I hope this level of quality continues.

I loved this episode! 5/5
I about died seeing Casey's suit and top hat. He's so dorky sometimes.

Just some rhetorical questions that popped in my head watching this:

1. How does Raph know where to get good prices on engagement rings? :P

2. Why couldn't April figure out Casey was trying to propose? :P

3. Why was Hun blushing when he saw Raph?:dead:

4. Why was the old man walking away from Casey and Raph while he was still speaking and then tells them to follow him if they want to save April? Does he have creepy disappearing abilities?

5. Why does Casey wash his dishes at April's apartment? Doesn't he even have a sink at his place?

6.Did Mikey really say he wanted to be the maid of honor and throw a bachelor party?

Harukuro 10-04-2008 05:28 PM

Hot damn this is this best episode yet!! 8)
  • First of all the scene with Casey proposing to April was so sweet.
  • Hun is back and the Purple Dragons are better looking then ever (both physically and as an organization)
  • I told you guys that he would say "Aw crude" when he saw the turtles. :P
  • Evil April was just plain awsome.
  • Mikey being the maid of honour...I'd love to see that actually.
By far the best episode. My only issue is that the old dude's name was Mr. San...seriously!! That basically means his name is Mr. Mister. And of course Don being so darn emo as well as Leo doing nothing too interesting so far. I also agree that the whole "I wanna play you for the rest of my life" line was just too funny.

Edit: D'oh!! His name's Mr. SUN!! Well it's not nearly as cheasy as San but, it still is in a way.

Let's see:
1. He prolly shops around in his spare time or has just been to that shop and saw it, not that hard to believe considering we're watching a show about mutant turtles that are ninjas.
2. To build up suspense.
3. Because he lied to the men bellow him in his gang and it made him look like a fool.
4. Have no idea as this is the first time we've seen him, but he's your typical mystical old asian man stereo type used on shows and in movies.
5. Because He and April live together, I'm pretty sure they said so in one of the first 2 episodes of this season.
6. Yes, don't forget he also screams like a girl and like to wear dresses.
