TMNT: Smash-Up

http://gonintendo.com/?p=65857

This time they actually have people who've worked on fighting games developing it. Sounds promising.

New TMNT game for the Wii in 2009

http://gonintendo.com/?p=65857

Not a whole lot is known right now other than it's a four player fighter with people working on it who worked on Brawl and some folks from Team Ninja. Of course, that's enough for me to want it play it immediately.

Edit: I literally checked a few moments ago when I went to post about this, somehow I missed the other thread. Since mine came second could a mod please delete this? Thanks!

Lil G 12-10-2008 07:18 PM

awesome news! thx for the info i got the wii.:D and the 360... and the psp... and obviously a laptop. so i pretty much stay in tune with the tmnt games.:D

Ninjinister 12-10-2008 07:40 PM

Ha! I KNEW this wasn't canceled! AND it's a versus fighter (my favourite genre) made by people with high pedigree in versus fighters. F*** yeah!

Mad World just bumped to number two on my most wanted games for next year.

Canadian Turtle 12-10-2008 07:43 PM

Damn I was hoping I would never have to buy new systems... now I will have to.... long live old school systems!

I whole heartedly agree!
I'll just buy the game for my friend with a wii and constantly go over to his house muahahahaha!

Ninjinister 12-10-2008 07:57 PM

You know Scyther posted it first, right? The "noob", as you put it, even said:

Oh, right. I remember now wondering why he said that because this one wasn't showing up in my new posts search. My evil, yo.

I hope this means this game will cover several of the TMNT universes. This is one medium where I welcome crossovers of this kind. It would be a great way to bring back Slash.

sdp 12-10-2008 08:42 PM

This has tons of potential to be awesome,

Ninjister you should have totally taken on the bet I made since you would have won and you'd own my sig for 6 months

though in this case it was a win-win for me, since even if I lost the bet it meant a new turtles game

Ha ha, 'tis all right. I probably wouldn't have thought of anything to do with your sig anyway.

I'm totally freaking stoked for this. I'm checking the rounds on every game news site from here until launch for more info.

Machias Banshee 12-10-2008 09:44 PM

This sounds interesting. Ubisoft doing this makes me happy - I've had my hopes of a Splinter-Cell style tmnt game... I just hope they keep out the annoying catchphrases.

I would have actually rather have seen Konami had done a Metal Gear Solid-esque TMNT game than Ubisoft have one like Splinter Cell. Splinter Cell is just a wee bit too dull for my tastes >.<

Machias Banshee 12-10-2008 09:54 PM

I'll admit I've never played MGS... but I'll take your word for it.

sdp 12-10-2008 10:12 PM

I don't understand is this a 2.5d fighter or a smashbros like game?

Even though concept started in oct of 07 and development in jan 08 if it doesn't even have a title or screenshots I really hope it doesnt end up being rushed after waiting all these years for the 25th and just get a inferior product.

Hopefully story mode is something well put together and not half assed and since its not bound by any license i really hope for some really cool stuff out of this or i'll be disappointed.

It'd be cool if it was named tournament fighters and Mikey was in the cover since he was the only one to get jewed in the boxart from the previous game

In fact even though Tournament fighters was mostly based on the old toon, it had influences of everything from mirage to archie so i'd definitely like it to be somewhat like it in mood. Again I really hope they take advantage of that it isn't based on a movie/show. Even though it'll be rated E i'm also hoping for it to be as dark as it can while having some humor of course referencing the old toon, a mashup of all the universes.

I'm not too picky, as long as it has cool characters/story/mood and a decent engine I'll love the game. It doesn't have to be the next Street Fighter or Smash bros.

actually i'd hope Mikey to say cowabunga and turtle power :D

R-iZZy 12-10-2008 10:17 PM

Wow, members of Team Ninja are in on this? Even some folks who developed SSBB are developing this?!

YESSSS!

Smash Bros. IS a 2.5 fighter. It's classified under the sub-genre of "action fighter" or "platform fighter" in the standard versus fighter genre.

Peanut 12-10-2008 10:43 PM

It's 2.5 D because it's 3D on a 2D plane. Definitely sounds really cool, especially if they can throw whatever they want in there, in terms of characters. I'd love it if they had alternate costumes. Giving all the characters Mirage-style skins would be amazing.

I concur. I'm salivating just thinking about who's all going to be in it, what everything's going to look like, how exactly it will play....

Jester 12-10-2008 10:57 PM

I guess I'll have to buy a Wii...darn it...;)

Is it going to be on any other system?

Roseangelo 12-10-2008 11:09 PM

Where does it say it's exclusive to Wii?

sdp 12-10-2008 11:11 PM

Well but what i mean is if it'd be like Smash bros or what I consider 2.5d fighting games like DoA. In fact I dont' consider smash much of a fighting game.

While a smash like game might be funner I'm not sure it'd fit the turtles unless it was a very wacky game. And before someone responds saying you can't have a 2d like fighting game like street fighter with four players thats not true, its been attempted in the past like Guilty Gear DS and it didn't come out so bad.

Was Mutant Melee as bad as reviews mention? To me it seemed like a watered down Power Stone game which are very fun.

CyberCubed 12-10-2008 11:17 PM

Hopefully this game isn't as bad as "Mutant Melee" which came out on the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox last generation. Check ninjaturtles.com or IGN/Gamespot if you're unfamiliar with the game.

I hope this one turns out good.

Peanut 12-10-2008 11:35 PM

Just Wii, thus far, which is slightly disconcerting. Most Wii only 3rd party software is shovelware of the worst magnitude, especially when it's a franchise game.

DoA is a 3D fighter, you can move in all directions, it's not on a single plane.

And just because it's developed by former Smash devs doesn't mean it'll be Smash Bros-esque in any way.

Roseangelo 12-10-2008 11:39 PM

The only source at this point is Nintendo Power, so of course they're not going to mention it being on non-Nintendo platforms.

Murphy said forever ago that this game was going to be on all platforms, so I expect that it will be. There's no logic in it being Wii-only anyways.

Man, I obviously don't know from good games, because I had the PC version and loved it, despite the difficulty.

Nintendo Power isn't run by Nintendo, it's licensed to a third party. They mention multi-platform releases all the time. Now, I haven't seen the article in question, but if it's not stated specifically that it's Wii exclusive, then it probably isn't.

There's a ton of logic to it, actually. Wii development is cheap and easy. Developing something for the 360 or PS3 takes significantly more money and time. A lot of "well worn" franchise games come out exclusively to Wii for a reason.

Kid Icarus 12-11-2008 12:24 AM

Not to mention Wii's insane userbase. Isn't that how it works? What ever system has the larger install base gets the random single platform games?

I heard the news of this game and had to come back to post about it.

I haven't been excited for something TMNT since they launched the new Tales comics.

Hopefully with this development team it'll turn out to be more then just playable.

And Peanut... Holy cow, 10,000 posts?

Peanut 12-11-2008 12:28 AM

7 years is a long time, my friend. I just broke it sometime last week. And it's good to see a VG section veteran back.

So I am hoping that they arent going to use 2007 movie-esque models for the turtles. If they do, I will buy a copy and set it on fire in the ubisoft parking lot.

Or... you could just play it regardless. What if the game ends up being the most rockin' thing you've ever played?

Damn skippy. I've got it on both Gamecube AND PC.

I never said the copy I burn would be the ONLY copy I buy ;)

And honestly I really am hoping that it will be a great game. If the game is good enough I can overlook the character models

VaughnMichael 12-11-2008 08:21 AM

I honestly hope it has characters from all over the tmnt universe and is a fighting game not some party game like smash bros.
I'm willing to buy a video game system and this game if they finally bring out a tmnt game worth buying again.

syk_skillz 12-11-2008 08:34 AM

Good news indeed :)
To bad we have to wait 9-10 months for it because the wait is going to kill me.
I was about to sell my Wii because it was collecting dust but this just changed my mind.

Ninjinister 12-11-2008 08:40 AM

I'm pretty sure it's going to be more like Smash Bros. (which is a fighting game, for Chrissake), than a more traditional 2.5 fighter like Street Fighter IV. After all, have you tried playing something more traditional with four players simultaneously? It would end up like Guilty Gear Isuka... >.<

Dr. Doom 12-11-2008 09:35 AM

Hopefully it won't be Wii exclusive. Being on other consoles would make it much more likely to not be terrible. And I am going into this under the assumption that it will be terrible, so prove me wrong Ubisoft, please.

I've only played the first smash bro's. and it was more like collecting points and hopping around on blocks than your typical fighting game to me, it didn't do anything for me. *shruggs*
It may end up being cool but I'd much rather have some all out battle like tournament fighters made with tuns of characters.
I really don't play video games anymore as I don't have the time for them as most of them are very time consuming.
But if this is cool I'll have put some time aside from it.
Pics and what not will make up my mind for me.
