Comic Shop Doesn't Sell TMNT? New to the comics? Look here!
Alright, so I hear from a heap of people who want to get into the comics but don't know where to look/start, or their local comic shops don't/won't stock TMNT. Here's a list of online resources I've used and trust, others should add theirs too if they're not here already.
If you want to know more about the comics, check out the section on the official Ninja Turtles website here, and feel free to ask around here. Good luck picking up copies of volume 3, people. I think I bought most of their last copies a year ago to complete my set.
|
Yea, it's near impossible. I've been trying.
|
good idea, tristan! atomicavenue.com and torpedocomics.com also have some issues up there too.
btw, anyone know anywhere i could get issue #26 of vol.4 ? it's the only issue i don't have and i haven't able to find a copy anywhere. |
Nice listing! GrahamCrackers.com is a great place - it's pretty much where I get most of my TMNT comics these days.

It isn't *that* hard to come by-- I have a bunch of extra issues and there is a comic book store not far from me that does as well. You are talking about Image, right? Yeah. Guess it depends on where ya live... |
Great thread, especially for people like me who can't get to a comic shop regularly. I get all my Turtles in mass online orders or when I'm in my hometown where there's a great shop. Now when is the Mirage website going to accept online orders? Sending in a paper and check takes so long.
As for the Image series, I've noticed it's kind of disappeared. I was looking through the massive TMNT section of my afore mentioned hometown comic shop, and that was the only era they didn't have. Although I did manage to snag issue seven in a second hand book shop by sheer luck. |
Yeah, my comic shop has every issue of the Image TMNT comic series as well.

Very nice post, tagged.

I would love to get into the comics, but obtaining a lot of back collections can be timely and pricy, even if you get them online. It's not that I wouldn't spend the money if I had it to spend; it's more than I just don't have the money to spend.
|
I hear what you're sayin' J. This thread was intended just to help peeps find them and get started if they wanted to. The best place to start getting into the comics is simply going to your local comic shop and just putting your name down for Tales each month. A lot of the time you'll find that they have some back issues in the store as well, which are usually at reduced prices.
I hear you about money too, it's a bitch... necessary evils and all that. If you can budget it in somehow, I suggest you check over at the comics section of the official website for the upcoming collected edition of Volume 1. That has a huge number of issues in it right there and pretty much sets you up for everything currently happening. I've been told that if that one sells well, then there'll be other books released in a similar fashion, so going back issue hunting won't really be necessary (unless you're a completist!). |
If I can afford to get Volume 1 in a compiled book, I most certainly will do it. As for the Tales, are they stand-alone stories where I can pick up a current issue and start reading, or are they one large story arc where you'll need to go back to the first issue? That's always been my gripe with comics in general is that you usually have to get into it from the very beginning or you'll struggle to get into it later.
|
Generally they stand on their own. Occasionally some will continue on for a couple of issues, but that rarely happens. You will get issues that will make reference to certain things in the past, but there's usually enough there in that one issue to not have to worry about hunting down back issues or knowing the whole picture. Each month it's a brand new, done-in-one story, usually done by a different creative team each time that can range from being all out ninja action, to introspective pieces, to galaxy hopping sci-fi, to crime noir, the list goes on. May's issue of Tales may leave you a little lost, as it's the conclusion to a long running crossover with the COW Boys of Moo Mesa, but you should be sweet starting at #59 (I say that not because I wrote it, but because I know that, while it does connect to other stories, all the info is in there, so you don't need to do any back-up reading, unless you decide you want to or can get the issues cheap).
|
Thanks for all the great input. I will most certainly try to pick up Tales #59, be it in a local comic shop or online. (I'm guessing the old days of subscribing to comics are long, long, long gone by now, huh?) Anyways, in the mean time I'll also be on the lookout for that Volume 1 compilation to pick up, too. With all the ideas being thrown around that the 2011 movie may in some way tie into the comics, I've got two years to try and dive as far into the comics as I can.

You'd actually be surprised at how little you really NEED to get to complete the TMNT canon continuity. There are a couple of threads around, but as I said, it's more than likely that the out of print stuff (back issues and that from previous volumes) will be collected if the Vol.1 book sells well enough.
As far as subscriptions go, your best bet is to just find a comic shop nearby and tell them you want to get your name put down for Tales of the TMNT starting at whichever issue you choose to start at. Most shops have a copy of Previews Magazine you can look through, which is what all comic shops do their ordering from. That shows you what's coming up two months in advance, so if you were to tell your LCS now to get the collected book for you, they'd be able to do it without fuss. That should be the case either way though, it just depends on how you go about it and how good your store is. Talk to the dude behind the counter, he'll know (or should anyway) how things work in that particular store best. |

Now an issue is always reservered for me to pick up. And is waiting for me whenever I choose to go in and get it. Sometimes I am surprised by two issues. :o |
Can't stress enough that this is the best way to do it. And people should keep an eye on the "Books of the Future" section in the comics bit of the official site, because comic shops require orders for comics and books two months in advance usually.
|
it's frustrating that the store who supplies me with my regulear dose of geekyness don't have TMNt anymore, they got in the collected books ("blind sight" etc)
but now the company where they get their stuff from have stopped with the TMNT comics:( |
Who do they get their comics from? Right now they're all going through Diamond Distribution, which is the standard for comics. If they're telling you Diamond stopped doing it, they're lying.
|
they are using diamond...
it could also have something to do with what the what the store is allowed to get from diamond by the owners of the store chain. I've heard from the pervious store owner that they have some stright rules of what they can take in. He quited, and got a job in a game store so he could have more freedom to get the stuff the other store can't get. I could start naggin' on him getting in tmnt comics since hes a huge fan himself. |
That's all I can suggest. As long as TMNT are in Previews -- Diamond will distribute them.
|
I'll say it again... If your store won't get a TMNT book for you, shop Panel to Panel.Net. You can subscribe to TALES for 10% off plus only $1.00 shipping. Order more titles and save more! But there are no minimums. Plus you'll be on top of all the Panel to Panel/Mirage exclusive news. I just posted the latest and greatest exclusive for the FUTURE TENSE trade. Check us out! http://paneltopanel.net/shop/

Has there ever been release of the TMNT comics into one big book. Kind of like, how there is the three Lord of the Ring books, but later on, they have been released into one big book?
Would be kind of nice if there was a hard back of the volumes released. (if there already is, then sorry, I don't follow up on my comic book fan lore) |

Regarding vol. 1, i was lucky ´cuz i purchased a lot when the franchise was dead. I even got the first edition of fugitoid, issue # 4 and shell shock. The total price a paid for the comics was really sheap.
I lived in the uk and i could get all the issues of vol.4, first vol. of tales, most of the issues of vol. 2 and second vol. of tales. Saddly no comic book shops in my country sells tmnt comics, so i have to buy on internet. |
