Can anyone help editing the tmnt articles on Wikipedia here?

Lots of the informations are outdated and missing, I read through everything and found out that The fast forward series animation are hardly mentioned.

Everybody can edit Wikipedia.

ToTheNines 04-18-2009 04:59 PM

I bet his IP adress is banned from editing, that's why he's asking.

gobo 04-18-2009 06:01 PM

I'm too busy to learn Wikipedianese, but what do you expect anyone to put up there?

Buslady 04-18-2009 08:53 PM

I used to edit the stupid thing until someone got in there and reedited my material...screw it. waste of time

Cipher 04-19-2009 02:45 AM

The whole thing needs to be reformatted/rewritten from square one. It's a sloppy, awful mess.

I don't have nearly enough time to rewrite the page myself though.

TMNT-pedia

There's also a TMNT-pedia.

TristanHuwJones 04-19-2009 06:30 AM

Both the TMNTpedia and the Wiki info need some serious attention. Both are a mess and really deserve better.

I created some of the articles back in 2005, as an anonymous user.

I've resolved to, very slowly (very, very, slowly) edit the TMNTpedia in my spare moments. I'll report back with progress.

Two things that need to be done when editing it:

1. Clearly seperate and address all fictional universes. The "Origing of the TMNT" page on the TMNTpedia has one section with a paragraph about the origin, and then one more paragraph about the 1987 cartoon version. What the hell? IT NEEDS ONE CLEARLY MARKED SECTION FOR EVERY VERSION.

2. This should be so basic, it's astounding. If you cite a specific incident in the fiction, add a link to the correpsonding issue or episode after the sentence. Even if that page doesn't exist yet, ideally it will some day.

For a clear example of what to do when citing a fictional event, check the Transformers Wiki. It's absolutely the most coherent fan database I have ever seen.

3. Please, oh please, dear God, use good writing.

---EDIT

Alright, so I made my first contribution, adding a summary to the "Origin" article.

Quote:

The "origin of the TMNT" refers to a series of events present in most TMNT fictional universes, which ultimately culminate in the mutations of Splinter and the Ninja Turtles. Most versions are similar to outline of Splinter's tale in the first issue of the Mirage comics. Hamato Yoshi is slain by Oroku Saki and Splinter takes refuge in the sewers, where he discovers four baby turtles have been dropped by a young boy. One day Splinter returns to find the turtles crawling in a strange ooze, and their mutations into humanoid creatures begins.

Though most versions of the origin include these similar elements, many differences are present. Some delve deeper into the past, some have added minute details, and some have even altered the origins of the ooze or the identities of the characters. The most well known versions are those presented in the 1990 film and the 1987 cartoon series, although they are wholly irreconcilable with one another.
Not too bad, I hope. My next step will be to fix up the rest of the origin page, and then make a new page for "Fictional universes," defining the term and carefully laying out each TMNT continuity (which the wiki desperately needs).

Things to work on: The lists of comics and episodes need clear, consistant formats. That's a long term goal. Also, there needs to be some disambiguation between "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Characters" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Franchise," because I believe it's all one page now.

I'm signed on to the TMNTwiki as Oroku Saki, by the way.

---EDIT 2

Alright, why does the Mirage version of Leonardo have absolutely no information? And why is Complete Carnage summarily described as "a demon-type guy who can take any form"? That's bloody terrible. There is so much work to be done.

BWAHAHAHAHA! That sounds like something I said to my sister once: "A sea monster thing that is all prehistoricy"

Okay, after seeing that I know that thing needs help, so if I have any spare time, I will devote it to saving them.

Cipher 04-19-2009 02:41 PM

I'm getting pretty into cleaning this thing up. Everyone should check my continued efforts on the origin page to keep me in line.

Other suggestions for the site -

When citing any fictional event, attach a "storyline" link to the end of the sentence. Like so: {{storyline|page title of relevant issue or episode|link title}}. Keep this consistent. Refer to episodes and issues by title if possible. For untitled issues, please refer to them as "Vol. ___ # ___."

For pictures, please include details of the source on the actual picture's page (where it takes you when you click on it.) If it's from the 2007 movie, say "Leonardo and Raphael fight in a scene from the 2007 film", complete with links.

Let's get a consistent format for issue and episode pages as well. I've asked Archon Turtle to ask Dan Berger if it's cool to use some of the summaries from the Mirage site for now, so we'll see.

Certain characters may need disambiguation pages to seperate different versions.

Lastly, I really do plan to do an article on the different universes at some point in the near future. Can we all agree that these are the major continuities?

1. Mirage (Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 4, Tales Vol 1, Vol 2)
2. Image (Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3, Tales Vol 1)
3. 1987 Cartoon
4. Next Mutation
5. 2003 Cartoon/Fast Foward/Back to the Sewers
6. Film (the 2007 movie being a lose sequel to the old trilogy)
7. TMNT Adventures
8. Palladium Source Books
9. Micro-continuities including video games, toyline bios, CooTS, and the Christmas special

Eh?

I would like to see a clear division of the cartoon and spinoff stuff and the comic material... it's so intermixed and misleading it's painful.

Agreed. Working on it.

CyberCubed 04-19-2009 05:02 PM

Keep in mind the 5 movie prequel comics take place in the Movie universe (of course), and they should be listed with the movies.

Yeah. I'd add in all auxiliary material (although I haven't actually read the movie prequels, so someone else would have to fill in details).

I'll probably list the Dreamwave series with the 2003 universe too. They never really had time to differentiate.

Pretty much true, it only had 2 new stories and they could pass as episodes of the cartoon easily. You just gotta assume April's part-time employee for the 2nd time around shop wasn't re-hired when she got her shop rebuilt in Season 2.

You need any help with character profiles or anything like that, holler.

If you want to knock those out, go right ahead. (Sweet Jesus, Complete Carnage's page needs fixing.) Just be sure to add storylinks and keep universes clearly divided.

I'm done with the origin page except for the 2003 cartoon section and some pictures. But I've got a lot on my plate academically, socially, and with the school paper in the next week or two, so I'll be chipping away at a snail's pace.

Krang 04-19-2009 09:57 PM

It would be nice if there was even half as much motivation to help out with The Technodrome's main site as there is to contribute to the wikis... :ohwell:

I totally forget sometimes that there even is a main site... So, what ever happened with the WAVs I was supposed to get you? Need me to send them again?

Im a totally newbie on the tmnt universe, due to the reason that i had never read any of the tmnt comics. I only watched like 40% of the original tmnt cartoons and half of the 2k3 cartoons.

So bacially i dont wanna touch anything on wiki,as most of u guys are way more expertised on this area.

Admirable. I wish others of similar status had similar restraint.

That's completely legitimate, and a good call. And it really would be nice to have a competent Wiki for curious fans like this, huh?

Bottom line, more people will see Wikis than a niche fansite (not that we don't appreciate it). And we can't exactly go in and start writing script for your site...

And that shouldn't be the case, so that's something we would like to change.

Everything I have that you sent is up on the site (besides the ones that are better quality than the ones we have). If you have anything new that's not up yet, please send it again.

Wikipedia itself, yes, but the TMNTpedia is just as niche as The Technodrome or any other TMNT site. Besides, The Technodrome still gets a good amount of traffic itself (even not counting the forums). I'm not trying to discourage anyone from editing the TMNTpedia, I'm just saying it's a shame that there is such a difference in the amount of interest.

In the past, people have contributed content as Word documents, plain text files, or just part of an email. No scripting necessary. :) On the other hand, it would be no problem to set up some sort of wiki-like system for OT info provided that we have some quality checking being done before it goes live on the site, although it would only be worth setting it up if anyone would actually be interested in contributing.

gobo 04-20-2009 08:16 AM

If you set it up like wiki, everyone would be less hesitant to add stuff. However, you can expect to get millions of totally whack posts to filter out. So, it's really up to you whether or not you want to deal with weeding out the BS.

J, Japan is not a monarchy. It's a democratic republic with royal figure heads, like Britain. Thanks for setting up the page though.

Ideally, locations should include a section for each universe with the events that transpired there. A number of TMNT stories have taken place in Japan, and they should be detailed (with storylinks, if you're going to edit, learn to use them) on that page. Eventually someone should set up a "locations" category as well, with links to each page.

By the way, if anyone feels inclined to set up a page for dear old Chet (the boy with the baby Turtles in the Mirage universe), please do so. There's already a link to the unwritten article on the Origin page. I don't have any of the short stories with him, but if someone else does... You could also note the appearences of the name "Chet" in the backgrounds of the comics.

The following important characters also lack pages: Cha Ocho, Armaggon, Null. Why they have no articles while Aska does is beyond me.

Spitfire 04-21-2009 12:46 AM

I edited it once. Some retard had Dan listed as "Dan Burger".

I have some ideas that would eliminate that problem, but I'll post them in a new thread to avoid taking this thread off topic again (sorry about that).

I think most people treat The Technodrome as solely your and Shredder's site, perhaps that's why there's such a lack of interest.

Krang 04-21-2009 02:34 AM

Again, that's something that we would like to change. :) Hopefully this new idea will be more inviting for the community to contribute.

Japan is still a monarchy, just like the UK and Sweden. There are constitutional monarchies, and democracies. Monarchy works in a democracy if the monarch only is a symbol for the state, but without any political power. A democracy and a republic is not the same.

Ninjinister 04-28-2009 04:08 PM

I've been more or less one of the more active editors of TMNTPedia for some time, cleaning up, fixing, and adding what I can, but the problem is I don't have enough time/drive to do everything.

Wikipedia is a lost cause when it comes to things like this. Too many vandals and elitists to contend with. I'm just glad that douche stopped randomly sticking "British" in front of every instance of Serling and Biggles' names, and adding in crap like Falcon being chased by Biggles because of the crime of attempting to "vote with a fake British accent".

TristanHuwJones 04-28-2009 04:21 PM

Alright, so I spoke to Dan about this little project last night, and if we can get things looking tight, we can have it go up on the official website as a proper encyclopedia of things over there too.

I've been writing up character bios and timeline information based on the comic books, what I suggest we do is whoever wants to be involved, speak up here, tell us what your main area of interest in the TMNT is and then we can write up some articles and go back and forth with each other on it all.

I'm also happy to write about certain aspects of the old cartoon show and the new one, along with the original movie.

First on the off-topic stuff:

Constitutional Monarchy is a good description but I don't think any of these 3 governments operates quite the same, e.g., the House of Lords has both judicial and legislative responsibilities in England, but in Japan there is a separate Supreme Court; Sweden doesn't have a bicameral system but the other two do. According to the CIA world factbook, Japan is "a parliamentary government with a constitutional monarchy."

Now back on-topic to the other off-topic:

I think it's a great idea to set up something moderated on this site, with changes that are submitted going through approval first. I've been editing wikipedia for over 2 years and the one thing that always gets me is when you've made a change and everything is 100% correct and then someone reverts your change. If there was a moderator they could look back in their logs to see if the change was valid or not and deny the reverting. It may be a lot of work for whoever is moderating though.
