HFS!!! And I thought the new TMNT cartoon designs rocked...these designs IMHO blow everything Ive seen away(and that includes the 80's Mirage stuff) I hat eto use this expression, but these new TMNT designs look sick as all get out.

Karpo_007 03-10-2003 05:21 AM

Not impressive at all. But of course these are just early skectches, not real art. Im sure it will get better.

I'll second that... maybe the second draft will be better?

Karpo_007 03-10-2003 06:19 AM

Well thats far from final, I hope it will get better. I still beliƩve that the dreamvawe series can be good one.

CoolWhip 03-10-2003 08:00 AM

....

Well, I don't really like them either.

Anyone know when the book is supposed to be out?

Karpo_007 03-10-2003 08:54 AM

I don't think any date has been given yet.

Kali 03-10-2003 09:37 AM

As an artist, I can see where they're going with this. Yeah, they're just sketches, but you can still see the style they're going to be using and can easily imagine what the finished products might look like. They're like teasers.

I can't wait to see the finished artwork.

Aztec General 03-10-2003 10:28 AM

Okay for what it was. I see no reason to claim that this they looked better than the Mirage stuff. Beaker, I'm beginning to think that you work for Dreamwave.

BigThew 03-10-2003 10:36 AM

Joe Mad needs to do the comic

HorseTechie 03-10-2003 10:55 AM

Oh piff.. I like these. Kind of creative, expressive. Of course, they could be preliminaries that have yet some changes to undergo before the final designs.

The first one on Mike reminds me of Image style.. mhh... but I like how the others sketches on the BHMstudies look. In'taresting duds!

Eye of Sarnath 03-10-2003 11:49 AM

Meh... they're okay. I'll wait until I see the official finished product.

I wish! Best darn comic company out there IMHO. I was blown away by these sketches alone, very angulair anime, witht hat urban look...almost akin to a little bit of the style Im trying right now.

I just bought the latest TMNT Mirage issue...and to say the art sucks is an understatement(Hmmm, square blocks with bandanas, and even worse Picaso looking people...IVe seen sprite rip webcomics look better) so I cannot wait for the real new TMNT comic! Just curious when its comic out.
In the 15 years Ive been a fan, this has to be the coolest look Ive ever seen given to the TMNT.

Karpo_007 03-10-2003 12:23 PM

I suspect too that he works for Dreamwave...

Eye of Sarnath 03-10-2003 12:55 PM

Prolly! :P

Dinny 03-10-2003 01:40 PM

I say so too

Dinny 03-10-2003 01:41 PM

How can u b so blown away by a few sketches

Oh.... I know you just didn't...

Anyways, I'm still finding it hard to get too excited about this new dreamwave series. Peter David's a good enough writer and all but.....

Karpo_007 03-10-2003 02:05 PM

I Know, I have the same feeling. But I will buy few issues and see where it goes. But to say that those skecthes look better than 80's Mirage... Well Some people like Next mutation. That is the way of the world.

So you guys really feel the blocko, over stimpled pap that passes as a TMNT comic in the year 2003 is better designed then the sketches shown on this thread? I mean Im all for the 80's, but modern updates on the 80's, not living in 1985 art styles. (IMHO tho, the 85 series has even better art then the current TMNT comic)

Have you guys seen the Dreamwave Transformers comics? Youre saying TMNT is better with bad black and white art, over astonishing jaw dropping color manga style? Ohhkay.

But yeah I wish I worked for Dreamwave, Ive been blown away by their stuff since 1998. However...they are in Canada, Im in Calfornia.
Um...so how do I work for them? I buy their comics nad mention how kick ass they are if that counts.

Anyways, just surprised people like the new TMNT cartoond esigns over the old ones, but dont like the idea of modern cool anime style TMNT over the 1985 look.

Karpo_007 03-10-2003 02:44 PM

You said that those sketches look better to you than Original Mirage. Well it's your opinion. And Im sure that nothing that Dreamwave can do will ever top the the original Mirage art, [Yes I have read scans of dremwave armada]. But of course the taste of art is diffrent for everyone. Like I said some people like Next mutation.

It can be a good comic book series if done right, But as said, I need to see few issues before I can say anything about it. Still those scketches don't impress me at all. Want to see good sketches? Go to Laird's Blast from the past page.

Laird's BFTP has very few "rough sketches". Mostly, there's old finished pieces and polished sketches. (Great stuff.) Show me something there that still has the guide lines in tact, then we'll compare.

Karpo_007 03-10-2003 03:00 PM

Well those skecthesare in early stages, but as you said, You can see where it's going. To me it looks to Imagish, but I have to see some finished art.

Dreamwave did an excellent job with Transformers, but you have to keep in mind that there is a miriad of artists on the various Transformers books. James Raiz does an excellent job with Armada, Don does an awesome job with the War Within book, and I have to said that I'm disappointed with Pat Lee's take on the Transformers. Sure it's still awesome, but the proportions and everything else is just too distorted. Hardly jaw dropping if you ask me.

I know a lot of people that work for Dreamwave that isn't located in Canada like Pat Lee and the others. But for the record, I don't think these test drawings were that impressive at all. They're hardly "anime" style, and don't look that great. They look like fat men. Then again, we all need something to complain about. And yeah, the new cartoon designs are sometimes lacking if you ask me.

Eye of Sarnath 03-10-2003 03:19 PM

Look at the first picture. WTF is up with Mikey? Seriously, he looks like a frog to me.

Raphael-sama 03-10-2003 03:47 PM

Yurgh. Those are horrible.

Pat Lee and TMNT do NOT mix. Hell, Pat Lee doesn't mix with anything.

Eye of Sarnath 03-10-2003 04:31 PM

Y'know, before I saw these pictures, I was actually looking forward to the comic. Can't say the smae now. :dead:

Greed 03-10-2003 04:38 PM

I like these new sketches I can not wait for the new comic

Eye of Sarnath 03-10-2003 04:39 PM

Oh, I can.

Y'know I almost quit reading right about here. What makes you think that Jim Lawson has an 80's art style?

I have bought a few Dreamwave Transformers comics for my little brother. I can't say I like the art. And it's not manga, it's amerimanga.

Still don't understand that.

cqb101 03-10-2003 05:22 PM

I kinda like the art.....I can't wait for the comic......

Eye of Sarnath 03-10-2003 05:22 PM

I like Lawson's style in the new comics... but that's just me. :ohwell:

The_Realest 03-10-2003 06:51 PM

The sketches are medicocre, but like other have said we should wait for the final product. I am looking forward to the comic though.

PWDESAI 03-10-2003 06:55 PM

1st one was retarded :o
2nd one was alright.
I guess it's easier to draw transfomers than tmnt, i really don't want to see 10 foot feet! :o

Aztec General 03-10-2003 07:09 PM

I will defend Lawson's art as well. I'm not the biggest fan of his humans, but he draws and amazing Ninja Turtle. I'm also a huge fan of black and white comics. If they are shaded correctly they look great.

Beaker my biggest beef with you is that your opinions are SO extreme. You either love or completey hate something. Relax a bit, and learn to enjoy things for what they are. Ex: If you don't like the new theme song then avert your eyes and ears during the 30 seconds its on and watch the remaining 22 minutes of splendor that is the new TMNT series.

In addition you flip flop between being an '80s superfan and someone who uses the term "'80s" to mock certain media. Are the '80s good or bad?

As for these pictures, they have potential but they are early drafts, and quite difficult to make out. These series could be great, and I hope it is. But it is much, much, much, much, much too early to claim that it will be the BEST yet.

lhb412 03-10-2003 07:38 PM

I also like Lawson's art, sure his humans are a bit weird but his robots, creatures, and especially Ninja Turtles look awesome! The problem with the current Mirage comics is that it's moving to slow, but that should change in a few issues ounce they get into resolving the story arc.

Anyway, back to topic, I can see where they're going with this, I think it looks great, I hope this and the New Tales of the TMNT get here soon, I can't wait.

Psycrow 03-10-2003 10:36 PM

I just hope that Dreamwave will be able to do something about the story. Man, the story for Dreamwave's transformers comics sucked the big one! They work way too slow. Good thing they called Simon Furman in to do the War Within series, which is the best line they had (It was only 5 issues). It also had the best art as well. Don can really draw some bad ass looking transformers.

Well, Don's been doing Transformers art for a long time now. Dreamwave's smartest move was to give him an opportunity. He's been a long time poster over at theallspark.

Caliosidhe 03-10-2003 11:49 PM

I like the sketches shown from the Dreamwave stuff.. the guy definately has a more dynamic style then tmnt comic fans are used to seeing..

Of course I really don't like the actual character design. I wouldn't mind seeing the turtles in that style as long as they don't end up looking like the frogs they do now. *laughs*
