You don't like the OT.You only like it because of nostalga.
SERIOUSLY. I'm sure the majority of people who say that they "like" the OT,only like it because of nostalga.
|
Maybe some of the people will agree with you, but I for one love the old toon for what it was. Watching it today, I realize what it was trying to be, a bizarre, goofy superhero show for kids that didn't take itself too seriously and wasn't concerned about being overly faithful to it's source material. Do I now, as an adult, prefer the 2K3 series? Kinda. But that's only because I've discovered the original Mirage comics and my sensibilities have changed. Now I prefer a darker, more violent take on the Turtles. But I still love the OT, and I know that alot of people here don't share the same sensibilities I have and prefer a lighter, more sillier take on the Turtles. It's like the old Adam West Batman show and The Dark Knight. Some people prefer camp over drama.

I like OT because I like OT. It's not because of nostalgia or anything.
By the way, you're kind of making a generalization about a lot of people on this board. |

The OT is the best some like it some don,t accept what is is.

I love the OT because it's a good series. There's some actual funny dialogue, the voice acting is awesome, there are some great episodes, and it has spawned some cool characters.
Nostalgia only allows me to excuse the animation errors, voice subs, and some of the bad episodes. It holds up. I've seen kids who are my age when I first watched turtles watching it and they love it too. It's just that kind of series. |
Sorry my friend Mutated Turtle! ...But I´m not agree with you this time...
You dont need necessarily nostalgia for like something a lot....a good nice example for me : Cartoons...It is not an "age cuestion"...you like them or not...and when you are getting older you still like them or not.... I love many Cartoons, old and new ones! |

I'm going to have to disagree with this topic completely.
Its true that most cartoons don't stand up too well over time, but Ninja Turtles in not one of them. The show is still great because of the great voice acting, writing and animation. In fact, a few years ago when I started getting back into old shows (I stopped watching tv because of all the reality tv) I was disappointed in almost all the cartoons I tried watching that I had liked as a kid. This was not one of them. I was surprised at how good the show still was. You want bad, try rewatching transformers of gi joe. Or how about he-man. Those are some bad shows. |
Don't ****ing tell me what I like and don't like. I love the OT because it's an awesome show.
|
Bold statement there, kiddo.
|
I rarely got to watch TMNT as a kid for some reason, I guess it aired when I was still in school or something. Didn't really watch it much though, my love for the turtles came from playing with the toys and creating my own stories. So when the DVDs came out I was able to watch the show mostly nostalgia free and ended up really enjoying it, much more than I thought I would. I also know how to distinguish if I like something because of nostalgia or not, I don't see a reason to be a shamed of nostalgia when something is genuinely only good because of nostalgia I'll admit it.
What makes the OT still as watchable today unlike most 80s cartoons and early 90s ones is that the show does not take itself too seriously, it knows its out there and embraces it, unlike say He-Man that while it has comedy it tries to be serious. |
I wasn't born in that era, I was born with the 2k3. And I very much dislike 2k3 and adore the old toon. So no nastalgia involved in my love.
|
What you're saying only applies to the people who go to hottopic & buy a TMNT shirt yet probably couldn't tell you which turtle was which. This is the headquarters for the worlds most obsessed fans. What's wrong with you? You pop up like twice a month just to be a total dickhead. I can't wait for summer vacation to end so you can finally start middle school.

Is it bad to love something for being nostalgic? No. Is it bad non die hard fans don't know that Mikey has nun-chucks? No. Can't we all just get along? We all love the same mutant turtles. <3 |

And, for the record, I love OT seasons 1-3. I hope Nick's new show is like what The Brave and the Bold is to Superfriends. |
I never claimed to like the OT. The first five eps I liked, but not even that much. Then, it caught on like wildfire, and I stuck with it just so I'd know what the shell my friends and other people were talking about.
|
The reason we love the old toon is the wacky plots, silly humor, and the overall self-parody nature of it.
The original cartoon literally made fun of itself. It was a fun comedy series, nothing more. |
The classic ninja turtles cartoon just happened to strike a chord with me, I like the action and comedy elements and the main characters, who they are and the way they act just happen to appeal to my liking. From what I deduce, to like something for nostalgia means to like something cause it brings you back to some period of time. Personally I don't care what period of time it's from, I believe every era has it's share of worthy and non-worthy memories, and though I was born in that era, there's a lot of memories from that era I grew up in I find very forgettable, non-enjoyable, and could do very well without, TMNT didn't happen to be one of them.
|
Haha what? How do you just come out with a generalization like that? I'm sorry but that's just a ****ing stupid thing to say. You're gonna tell me what I don't like it because of nostalgia? What are you gonna tell me next, I only love my mother because of nostalgia? Get outta here. You HAVE to be trollin', there's no other way.

While I don't agree that everyone who likes the OS now only likes it because of nostalgia, I do believe that a good percentage of the people that are hardcore OS fans... well, if they'd never seen it before and were just shown it now for the first time as a grown adult, would find it not to be their cup of tea.

Why do I love the OT? Is it nostalgia? Nah, it's totally this guy:

Good lord... You really do have an unhealthy man-crush on him haha. That is, if you made that.

I don't necessarily think people want to watch the show because of nostalgia. I NEVER watched a single episode when I was a kid. Up until a few years ago I had acquired the first 6 seasons (and a little help from YouTube vids). Yes, I could have been critical about it and say the animation is off, some things don't make sense, but you know what? I kept watching it because I wanted to. It didn't matter what the logistics were to the show, I watched it because I enjoyed it, I laughed a lot ( which is hard to do compared to cartoons now-a-days (*cough* Spongebob *cough*). Also look at it this way. You must be familiar with the cartoon Tom and Jerry (I'm sure everyone is). That cartoon came out in the fifties! Given it is hilarious, I don't watch it for nostalgic purposes, I watch it mainly because the music is awesome. I've read the score to one of the cartoons and it's ridiculous. (I sort of watch it out of envy you might say) Anyway, back to the topic, I watched a lot of Power Rangers when I was a kid. Do I watch them now? No. Will I watch them in the future? Probably not. Also, you must consider that the OT stuff that is being sold at Hot Topic isn't necessarily because they're awesome, but it's because it's "retro." It's cool because it's "retro." Turtles were cool back then, and it makes a lot of people happy. They may feel a little nostalgic, but I wouldn't say they hated the cartoon (I'm sure they prefer the turtles as a 'symbol' of their childhood, and not a scar) |

Most people here though aren't even like that... I don't think you sign up to be a member on a forum like this and talk about TMNT all the time because of nostalgia... -ms |

I enjoy the classic TMNT series for both nostalgia AND because it's honestly a fun and fantastic series.
There's a reason why TMNT was the biggest thing on the planet in the late 80s and early 90s. It was just that good! It still blows many cartoons these days out of the water. |

The line for my "Turtle notalgia" is drawn at the movies, toys and video games. I saw most of Red Sky and a few other episodes when they first aired, but that's it... and I love the OT.

I believe the OP is rather off based.
The 1987 cartoon is very entertaining stacked up to other cartoons produced before and since it's 10 year run. There was a lot of episodes and not all of them were winners and in my opinion only the first 5 are truly fantastic but a good fair share of that sizable episode count had great entertainment value. Sure the pop-culture humor is dated now but that doesn't stop people from still loving the crap out of Animaniacs and such. And to it's credit while it wasn't great as an action show it did have some good action. So I'd say its much more than just a good comedy. It's a good action comedy with a bit more emphasis on the comedy. The TMNT comics were parody from the beginning and the 80s cartoon kicked that up several notches and made a point of making breaking the forth wall and art form. It is without a doubt, a cartoon worth watching. It's just maybe not worth watching every episode (at least more than once). I personally dislike when people say they only like the OT (mostly because they've never seen the comics) and dismiss the 2003 cartoon without a second thought but that doesn't mean the old cartoon wasn't great. If it wasn't, how many of us would be here? Comics were big, the 2003 cartoon was bigger, the movies even bigger but the 80s cartoon was where this franchise became a phenomenon. What doesn't hold up so well is the animation. Its pretty dang cheap looking most of the time and rarely consistent. That annoys me to this day but not enough for me to never watch the show again. I've got all the DVDs, when ever the turtle mood strikes me I pop one in. |
And the people who like the Mirage comics only like it because it's not popular.
Hook. Line. Sinker.....DONE. |
I see what you did there.
Having not read many Mirage comics personally I don't have that much of an opinion on them. They're good reads but probably not my personal favorite versions of these characters. I like something a bit inbetween like the 2003 cartoon and the first and fourth movies. |

so, what if they do, does it make..."u mad"?!
also, >nostalga mfw |
It's fine for what it is. It's campy and self-mocking. It gets young kids into Ninja Turtles even today when they see it on YouTube or wherever. It serves a purpose and never claimed to be the definitive TMNT. The fact that a few people who only know of that version think it's the "real" TMNT doesn't make it abhorrent.
My wrestling character is an 80s throwback, so when I scrape a few bucks I'm going to Hot Topic for an 80s TMNT toon shirt so I can stick the graphic on the back of my denim vest. Gotta show love for what got me into TMNT in the first place! |
I disagree. The OT is genuinely funny. And reporter April is cool- not to mention sexy.
