Random Turtle Facts!

The title says it all: Post a random Turtle fact!

This fact comes from a "well duh" place. I've never been able to pronounce the last name of the guy who does Leo's voice for the 2k3 series, but the other day I was looking at Raph/Rutger's autographs and noticed that he asked "Do you know what my last name means?" and I remember thinking, what a silly question...of course not. Then, as part of my "research" for a project oldmanwinters and I are working on, I was watching the first season of the 2k3 series and I took the time to actually read his name...Michael Sinterniklaas... Sinter Niklaas....Saint Nicolas. Dude's last name is Santa Claus!!

EDIT: Other odd tidbit, his zodiac sign....Leo!

Barry Gordon, voice of Donatello in the 1987 TMNT cartoon, recorded the original version of (I'm Gettin') Nuttin' for Christmas when he was 7 years old. It reached #6 on the charts.

Sing it Donnie!

Kunoichi_Haruko 02-26-2011 05:59 AM

*claps* Jester, this is brilliant! :D Can't wait to see what else you dig up.

oldmanwinters 02-26-2011 09:33 AM

Patti Howeth contributed NOTHING to the TMNT cartoons, despite her writer's credit on the first six episodes!

Jester 02-26-2011 04:08 PM

Six? She gets a credit on Return of the Shredder too?
EDIT: Well I'll be dipped. IMDB is your friend. She also has credits on Chip and Dale, as a one off voice.

IIRC, she helped come up with the inital story outlines for those first few episodes with her then-husband David Wise.

In 1999, Cam Clarke, Leonardo from the OT, released Inside Out, a romantic / adult contemporary cover album. It had a peculiar twist: Clarke subtly modified certain lyrics to sing under his own perspective as a gay man.

So I pulled this almost directly from Wikipedia...so what!!
Here's the IMBD post:

In 1999, (Cam Clarke) released his album "Inside Out." The album contains various love songs by various artists including James Taylor and Carly Simon reworked and performed in gay perspective.

Roger Ebert was at one point addicted to the TMNT video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It also seems to have colored his review of the films, but that's opinion more than fact.

Donnie 02-27-2011 01:31 AM

In the original movie, you can sooo see some sort of wire sticking out of Leonardo's costume when he romps over the Turtles game-board! You know, the part where he's like "I don't think...I know!"

Most awesome celebrity admission ever!

In 1989, Cam Clarke voiced a character named Beebop on "The California Raisins Show".

California Raisins! I remember them! Haha

Actor Sam Rockwell never had a scene with any of the Ninja Turtles in the original movie.

Heck, I forgot Rockwell was even in TMNT. "Check out the east warehouse on Lairdman island." Wasn't there supposed to be a scene in the movie where he gets slashed by Saki...it's supposedly why he's holding his arm during the scene where Shredder "knights" new Foot soldiers

Turtles lack opposable thumbs.

...

*looks at which forum this is in, then reads the other posts in the thread*

...

Oh! Despite my recollections, Mikey's name was never misspelled on-screen in the original 'toon except for the title of the ep, "MICHALANGELO, THE SACRED TURTLE".

Koi 02-28-2011 05:55 PM

Raphael - Raphael wears the red bandana and is the darkest of the four turtles. He can be short-tempered and anti-social and loves rap and punk music.

The four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are all named after famous Renaissance artists. Michaelangelo should have been spelled "Michelangelo" but neither of the writers had a spell checker when they first created the comic.

For some reason I laughed.

The strange substance that gave the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles their special powers is supposed to be the same substance that gave the superhero, Daredevil, his special powers.

source = http://www.kidzworld.com/article/561...-tv-show-facts

Edit:
The name "Splinter" is a parody on Daredevil's mentor, a man known as "Stick." The Foot, a clan of evil ninja who became the Turtles' arch-enemies, is a parody of the Hand, who were themselves a mysterious and deadly ninja clan in the pages of Daredevil.

Mirage Raphael keeps a teddy bear when he sleeps. Which is kinda weird because OT Raphael sleeps with his weapons.

Huh.

Koi 02-28-2011 06:41 PM

I like the irony in that you just said.

ssjup81 03-01-2011 04:57 AM

Wow, now that is interesting. Mirage Raph sleeps with a teddy. lol I already knew about OT Raph with the sai. I don't think any of the others (OT series) ever slept with their weapons, though it would've been difficult for Leo or Donny to.

Funny, don't surprise OT Raph; you'll get a sai to the stomach. ><

Krang was banished from Dimension X for war crimes and he lost his body in the transfer to earth , leaving him as a brain with a face.

Avatar Yuffie 03-02-2011 07:54 AM

Mirage and 2K3 Mikey has Klunk the cat.

I don't remember OT Mikey owning a cat, but he does keep a pet or two in some episodes (Maxwell the fish, Pete the pigeon and Ditto the parrot). He even bought a couple of piranhas (?) as his birthday present to Raphael.

Archie Mikey was given a step further that he can actually communicate with animals, too.

Jester 03-02-2011 08:38 AM

Old Toon writer David Wise wrote for several other series...and borrowed plot elements from them for TMNT.
In the Transformers episode Mircobots, several Autobots are shrunk, and go inside Megatron to disconnect the "Heart of Cybertron." While inside, they wind up in his shoulder joint, hoping Megatron doesn't make any sudden moves. Upon completing their task, as the 3 Autobots escape Megatron as they start to return to normal size, Bumblebee looks back at Megatron and says, "Excuse Us," the exact same line Donatello says as he and Leonardo escape Krang's Body as it starts to shrink.

Hamato Yoshi was a member of the Foot Clan in every incarnation of the TMNT....except the new 2k3 series.

Hmm... I forgot about that fact. He was recruited by the Guardians in "A Tale of Master Yoshi" wasn't he? I guess Laird and the 4Kids creative team realized there was no way to sugarcoat how the heroic Yoshi would have been a member of a ninja clan of assassins.

The Fifth Turtle 03-02-2011 12:12 PM

For many people, their interest in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seemed to shift to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when they hit the scene. I always thought it was interesting that the name of the Power Rangers seemed to borrow off of the turtles.

Yeah, seemed like lots of folks wanted to create a concept around "three adjectives and a noun."

Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters
Geriatric Gangrene Jujitsu Gerbils
Adult Thermonuclear Samurai Elephants
Ex-Mutant Teenage Samurai Humans (later shortened to "Ex-Mutants")

And then there was "Samurai Pizza Cats," (also ported to America by Saban!) which doesn't follow the formula exactly, but is so obviously a TMNT knock-off!

Jester 03-02-2011 04:24 PM

What about Immature Radioactive Samurai Slugs!?

Oddly enough the voices I hear in this parody are Rob "Raphael" Paulsen (who does this a lot...see Animaniacs Hooked on a Ceiling for Paulsen parodying TMNT..again.) and Jim "Leatherhead" Cummings. Also Jim Cummings is an alternate Shredder, so he is doing a parody...of himself.

Yeah, they now have a collective trope for that.

The samurai slugs made me LOL. XD

I know there was an ep of the OT series where Mikey was befriending a cat. At least that's something that seems to be apart of all the Turtle mediums, right? Mikey being good with animals. When do they start doing this for the Archie comics? I just started reading those and am new to that particular series, but I'm not far into it. No pets or anything yet for Mikey

Not particularly a knockoff. Saban just dubbed it and made it crazy because they didn't have a real script to work with and made up most of the stuff. Not complaining, I loved the show with its bad puns and jokes, even the "Turtle" reference in the intro. lol I like the original Japanese version too...where they're not Samurai and the storyline isn't as comedic as the dub made it and didn't break the fourth wall like the dub did.

OMG! I remember this!! I loved that one! I remember laughing so much at it as a kid, because it was supposed to be TMNT parody and stuff.

Avatar Yuffie 03-03-2011 03:57 AM

^as mentioned before I lost my Archie comics in the years. But I remember the future Turtles referenced this.

Another random fact: Turtle Power is a Trope Namer!

Jester 03-03-2011 09:29 AM

The later part of season 2 of the 2k3 series introduced us to the only songs in the series that weren't the theme song, Midnight Run in City at War Part 1 and It's a Jungle Out There in April's Artifact. Both were kinda lame, so thankfully these were the only non-theme songs.

Speaking of songs and Turtles, anyone know who the singing voices of the Turtles were for the Coming Out of Their Shells tour?

Wow, it was so weird when those songs started up when I was watching these eps the first time. It felt so out of place with the series!

Jephael 03-03-2011 09:48 AM

I liked "Midnight Run" but that entire scene didn't really fit the tone of City At War.

Judith Hoag, April from the 1st Turtle movie, was in a 2011 film called Wish Wizard. He character's name: Mrs. Casey.
James Saito, who was Shredder in the same movie, was in a 2000 episode of Law & Order. His character's name: Yoshi Yopshimura.

Speaking of Hamato Yoshi, in the Archie comics (like the Fred Wolf cartoon, Yoshi became Splinter), as a young man witnessed the nuclear fallout of Hiroshima.

Guess I'm trying to figure out how old he was here, it was implied Yoshi's in his teens during WWII... so in the Archie timeline (90's) he'd be in his 50-60ish?

And still kicking butt. Would explain why the Future Turtles mentioned him dieing of old age.

He would have been early-60s at the youngest. Splinter states that he was 15 when the first atom bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima, which would place his birthday somewhere around 1930. Assuming the Archie time-line set itself in "real time" (like that exists in comic books!), the turtles' Japanese adventure took place in c.1992 (the year of issue #29's publication). Using that logic, I'd say Splinter was 62 at this point in the series.

I remember one issue celebrated Splinter's birthday, but does anyone know the exact day of birth?

May 11. I was trying to figure out his age too based on that, and figured, "Wow, he'd be round about my grandmother's age (she was born in 1930).
