Thread Crapping

[Edit: DarthRaph, please see my post in Mod Discussion. To everyone else, please disregard this thread. This rule will not be enforced, especially in GD. --Krang]

I've noticed that there are a lot of threads that are going off-topic un-necessarily. Most of the time a conversation is carried on between several people that has nothing to do with the thread topic. I've especially noticed this from a specific group of people which I will leave unnamed for now.

I will ask that you try your best to keep threads on-topic.
If you want to discuss a different topic, please start a new thread.

I will start editing posts to start, and then delete posts if it continues.
So please do not force me to use my mod abilities.

If anyone has issues / questions / concerns regarding this, please respond to this thread.

Thank You

DR
DarthRaphael

Oh c'mon, are we really THAT bad? Yeesh...

((grumbles to self))

I can't promise to TRY... but I'll TRY to try...

The Defibrillator 04-14-2003 11:42 AM

aye aye Darth Raph!

"completely-on-topic-posting-module" has now been activated

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 11:44 AM

 Seems like we are!BTW you can be direct to me darthraphael, i wont bite.
Too hard.. :>
I'll do my best to stay on topic, so yeah... :dead:

Leo656 04-14-2003 11:48 AM

I can understand about things going completely random in the main forum, but I don't see the point of getting strict about the General Discussion forum. Unless "Discuss Anything Off-Topic Here" has suddenly come to mean "Discuss Anything Off-Topic As Long As It's Completely Related To the Topic At Hand".

It just seems like nitpicking, that's all.

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 11:58 AM

You know Darth,
Sometimes conversations just go off topic and its nobody's fault. Nobody just decides to go off topic. The flow drifts away from the topic so gradually noone notices. The only extreme case of Off topic I can think of was solved quite peacefully (by Horse Techie I believe), by the creation of the Yaoi thread.

Besides going Off Topic is the Fan-forum equivalent of Jay walking. I'm sure you, yourself have done it once or twice. I guess you just like to "cast the first stone".

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 11:59 AM

True...well staying off topic has always been a rule around here, i guess now it's being more seriously enforced..
Well if i have to start a new thread everytime im about to go off ffrom the main topic then so be it :tgrumble: but i dont like starting threads.
Oh, if you are going to be as strict you might aswell check the introduction forum, where 1 out of 2 threads turn into some kind of RPs after someone is introduced...nothing wrong with that, in fact im FINE THEY ARE HAVING FUN THAT WAY AND WOULDNT LIKE THE FORUM TO BE CHANGED
...
But, it just seemed unfair..

Zenrick 04-14-2003 12:36 PM

Yeah, sounds like SOMEONE is having a power trip....not to mention any names or anything. This is a fun forum for ANYTHING to happen. As long as we dont try to harm each other mentally, physically or spiritually, I think we can handle this forum on our own thank you very much.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 12:39 PM

I wouldn't call it power trip as he's trying to get some order here, but i do disagree with this, at least in the general discussion forum i do.

Machias Banshee 04-14-2003 12:39 PM

Come on, everyone, relax. We're not trying to impede on your thread enjoyment, its jsut that we're concenred about things getting clogged up wiht a bunch of nonsense threads (the "which is better" threads, for example)

I admit, I've gotten off-topic so many times, (with clones, etc....)but I just try to mention the original topic, and keep it going. *shrugs* Just do what you can, so we can keep a clean happy forum :D

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 12:42 PM

I've already agreed on not to make any more which is better threads, in fact, it were those very own lame threads that made me turn to the general discussion forum, i'm not saying i wont follow this rule, i respect every mod decission (do i have any options ;) ) but i am not happy with it, period, at least not in the general discussion forums, they're suppossed to be for offtopic stuff.

I agree that the "Which is Better" threads are very annoying. And, there's nothing wrong reminding us of a rule, but I think He's going a bit too far.

Zenrick 04-14-2003 12:47 PM

its like saying "Hey you guys that think differently......THINK LIKE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO!" You cant control something like this. Isnt the word 'general' in reference to being 'broad' and such? how broad is a forum that cant say exactly what they think about the topic? So heres a question.....can we make a topic about whatever the crap we want? well I guess that was rhetorical 'cause the answer is yes..........so why cant we say whatever we want? whatever its just gay.......

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 12:54 PM

It's not gay, it's BI!Will someone please think of the children?! :(
And what he means is that we can make threads as long as we dont drift away from the main topic, which i found quite restricting in a forum of this nature (im talking about the general discussion forum here.) but there's not much i can do about it :P

Leo656 04-14-2003 12:55 PM

I know what they're trying to do, and the motive is fine. The "Which is Better" threads, for example, are a pain in the ass and a big reason why I've committed most of my villainy here in General lately.

But those threads don't exactly fall under "Going Off-Topic", do they? I think that's more of a "Posting Pointless Threads" kind of thing. You're talking about going OT within a thread, and that's something else entirely.

Personally, and this is just me, but I would rather see someone go OT WITHIN a thread, and have that OT-ness be contained, rather than an entire new thread be created for the sole purpose of continuing a brief, random, OT conversation. If someone is talking about TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze, and I feel like making a Kevin Nash joke, I'm not gonna start an entire new thread for the purpose of one joke.

I aint mad at ya Machias, ya know I got nuthin' but love for ya. And I'm not mad at the other Mods either, I know what they're trying to accomplish. There's better ways to accomplish it is what I'm saying. The system's been working fine the way it's been, for the most part. And like I said, reminding us to stay on-topic in the General forum is counterproductive just by nature.

But if you want us to try and tone down the lewdness and references to Stooge-love, I think we can at least give it a shot.

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 12:56 PM

He's even threatening to delete posts for crying out loud!
He even said "Don't force me to use my mod abilities" Isn't this a tad severe a thing to say about simply going off topic?
I mean this is a fan forum. It's not like we're the U.N. or anything we're just a bunch of TMNT fans having fun for pity's sake.

totally.......that threat should result in loss of Mod status ;) Most of us get along really well and a ton of our posts are light hearted.....we dont need some tyrant threatening this fun as crap forum.....the off topic posts make it what it is.....FUN!

Exactly...that "which "which is better" is better" thing was ridiculous, in my opinion...

Oh goodness, no...if you just make one joke about him, within the context of something in the thread, thats fine. we're talking about stuff that REALLY gets out of hand...(heh, you have my email, you'll see some examples there... ;) )

Yeah, I tend to go off-topic too at times... *cough*funniest people*cough*

Zenrick, dr losing their mod powers because of this would be going too far, even though i'd probably get kinda angry if my posts are altered or even deleted for that reason...
So yes, i'm still against this, at least in this area of the forum  just take it easy guys.
YOU KNOW, SO THAT I DONT HAVE TO DECLARE JIHAD TO YOU GUYZE HAHA OMG WHERE'S MY KEYBOARD :(

I'd have to agree with that, but what Darth wants is different.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 01:13 PM

Off topic: can you NOT quote so much stuff?thank you :P
Honestly i think this rule could actually bring order in some parts of the forum, but only if applied right.

Leo656 04-14-2003 01:17 PM

 Nicko said "jihad"...

Sorry, that just struck me funny.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 01:26 PM

You are not supposed to laugh, PH33R TEH JIHAD  *gets some war clothing and a bazooka*

Duke 04-14-2003 02:03 PM

What the fudge?
I mean this is general discussion, so lets make it general. Dude if DR starts deleting threads and posts i'm going to get mad. He's acting like a Nazi, IMO. I mean its one thing not to start useless threads about "which is better" but not to get off topic in the general discussion is down right being like a tyrant.

I just want to hear what the big man, KRANG, has to say on the subject.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 02:09 PM

Damn it, now everyone's calnig DR nazi and such  i'm against this too, but calm down, it's not so freakin' bad..
I do agree with you, this IS the general discussion forum and think offtopicness should be allowed.
Now if you're gonna use it in the tmnt forums only go for it, but if its gonna be applied everywhere, even the offtopic forums, then its not worth the price...of course that's just my opinion :p

Leo656 04-14-2003 02:14 PM

That was exactly my point.

Just to relate an experience from the Lords of Pain boards, where I used to post frequently, stuff like this eventually led to a flood of anti-Mod threads and some individual posters going so far as to declare "open war" on certain mods. I for one do NOT think we need to see people with anti-Mod sigs, or threads dedicated solely to calling one of the Mods a "tyrant".

I've seen it happen, many times on many boards. Ask yourself if a drop of control is worth all the people who are eventually going to go so far as to get themselves Warned or Banned.

CookSux 04-14-2003 02:15 PM

Anyone notice the rise in stupid ass threads lately? Especially from Tokka creating a brand new thread per comparison. Which is better, new TMNT or old TMNT? Which is better, old Shredder or new Shredder? How about this one... Which would you want, a kick in the face, or a punch in the balls?

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 02:17 PM

CookSux,
That's not what this is about.

And i'm not technically calling DR a nazi, i don't know the guy personally. But he is kinda acting nazish with this thread. But if it is only cause of the which is better threads and thats all he is going to inforce it on, then i really don't mind. And would actually be glad.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 02:22 PM

It is actually, tetsu, it'd be good if this rule would be used to put some order in those lame-ass threads that make the general tmnt discussion worse to the point of being annoying...i just dont want it interferring with the other forums :tgrumble:

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 02:33 PM

No, he's talking about the side-conversations that occasionally pop-up within the threads themselves.
I hate the "which is better" threads too. Although I think there's nothing wrong with joke threads as long as they fit the forum.

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 02:40 PM

@Leo
I understand what you're saying and I too consider "all out war" to be a last resort. But let's face it. We're all just about mad enough to do it. We should all try to be more constructive with our anger.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 02:41 PM

Jokes are fine, specially if they're ontopic...but yeah, if they're gonna ban side-conversations or topic drifting, i'd hate that, at least here in the general discussion forum.
And yes, which is better threads got so annoying already i wouldnt mind the mods taking care of em...

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 02:42 PM

I think kali's about ready to take-out the "Suki vs. Saki" thread.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 02:45 PM

 I hope so, but i dont mind, as long as they stop making new threads about which is better already...it's got annoying to see a mirage vs whatever thread every 2 threads.

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 03:34 PM

Yeah, tell me about it.
I wish people would be more creative with their topic ideas.

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 03:37 PM

You and me both :( but i believe that was taken care of yesterday, fortunately.

Tetsu Deinonychus 04-14-2003 03:47 PM

How so?

Nickokapo 04-14-2003 03:49 PM

Well kali said she'd show no mercy to any new which is better thread, sooo...yeah... =P
