No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
wow, has anyone here ever went out their way to be nice to someone and get kicked in the teeth for it? Today I found a wallet, and yes it had money it. And because I thought it was the right thing to do I decided to return the wallet. I went to this guys house (who actually doesn't live too far from me)and told him I found his wallet, and you know what this ****ing old sh**head of a man does? He accuses me of stealing it from him and demands to know how much I took. WTF?
Wow! Just seriously wow! You would think this freaking old man would be grateful someone was honest enough to return his ****ing property. You know I'm not one to play the race card, I hate people who do it all the time, but in this situation I can't help but wonder if he would have accused me if I was white. This old man was such an asshole to me and all I was doing was trying to be ****ing nice. Of all the reactions I expected upon returning a lost wallet to someone this was the last thing I expected. ****it! Next time I find someone wallet I'm not doing **** about. Anyone else ever get crapped on for trying to be decent human being? |
Don't let one douche keep you from doing what's right.
Can't think of a time this has happened to me. |

Either way, I give you points for doing that. Most people wouldn't. Have I been sh*t on despite good actions? Yep, story of my life. Too much to get into though. You're not alone. |

Seriously, major points for manning up and doing the right thing man.
Unfortunately you're probably right about the race thing, especially since its an older man who comes from a different time. Not making excuses for the guy, I'm just saying your probably right. Has something like this happened to me? Of course. We all have. It's the worst when you feel good about doing it then getting smacked in the face for it. Also, whats the plural word for Octopus? |
Octopi, why?
|
Props to you for being honest. At least you did something about it while others would've either left it there or taken the money. And yeah, the guy may have been accusing you because of your race or just because he's a cranky old man and may be senile. Seniors can get like that. I'm sorry that had to happen.
Has it happened to me when I'm nice to someone for something? Yeah, but I don't let it get me down. I just keep on trying to do the right thing. |
as long as you know you did what's right , youre good.
|
I would like to say that you did a good thing giving it back to him. I actually was going to go into a race discussion in reference to this thread, but decided not to.
You know, I'm a horrible person in a lot of ways, but when it comes to people losing stuff I tend to want to give it back to them. I once picked up $100 off the ground and stopped the lady who dropped it to give it back to her. I didn't even think for a second about keeping it. It's just the way I was raised, I guess. |

I seriously feel for you though, man. So awesome of you to return the wallet...I honestly don't know if I would have. Scary. What a terrible situation. That man must have some 'chips' on his shoulder. |
You da woman! But, keep in mind that seniors are called 'old farts' for a reason... cuz they're often just that pleasant. But, saying, "next time, I'll just keep it" is petty. Karma points for being honest. Karma penalty for being corrupted by his ingratefulness. You still came out ahead though.
|
I wouldn't let one cranky old prick stop you from doing the right thing again. If you were to find a wallet again, maybe drop it off at a police station or something.
And doing the right thing can get you rewards: In a previous job, there was a wedding going on at the hotel I worked in, and I found £70 in notes in the toilets. I handed it in to the manager, and three months later it was still unclaimed so I got to keep it! One've the receptionists was related to the groom, and he asked around the guests and nobody came forward. Another time, I was being a perv and checking out a girl's ass in front of me walking down the road, when her partner put his hand in his back pocket and £20 fell out. I picked it up, caught up with him and told him that it was his. He told me that it wasn't, so I said for him to check his pockets, I saw it fall out, and he still argued with me that it wasn't his! Sorry mate, you missed your chance, mine now! So yeah, do the right thing, karma'll pay you back! |
In his defense... most people who steal wallets bring them back to the owner with money still in it.
|
People, in general, are the most thankless, worthless, self-absorbed pieces of sh*t in the history of everything.
When I worked at a grocery store, 9/10 times I'd do something nice and be lucky to get away from the person without getting b*tched at, let along receive a thank you. Now, working in maintenance for a property management company, I deal with ungrateful piece of sh*t day in and day out to the worst extent. The biggest problem with most of these people is their retarded sense of entitlement and self pity. They're the only ones with problems, they're the only ones with things to do, they're the only ones who ever have to deal with awful sh*t. The world owes them this and that for such and such a reason. I got b*tched at at work so now I'm going to go down to this store and scream at some 16 year old stock clerk because I want to make everyone as miserable as me. I'm always telling myself "f*ck people". Let them rot and die. Why break your back for people who wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire? Then I do something so minuscule for some nice old lady and she'll act like I just saved her life. And somehow that nice old lady and her thanks is what makes the attitudes of the last 9 people who've sh*t on you melt away. My best advice? Do what you can for people and just forget about the ungrateful ones. You can't sit there and be moody for not getting a proper thank you, or any thank you at all. You do nice things for people because it's the right thing to do. Don't worry. Karma will catch that old f*ck in time. |

Well, see I was a Scan Coordinator, so whenever I helped someone it was me going out of my way to do it. Still, I'd see some poor kids get REAMED for things totally beyond their control. I don't know how angry I would get to hear "can you check the back?" over and over for the same product. Really, it's not that kids fault it's not there, what's the point in screaming at him aside from proving the fact that you're a poor excuse for a human being?
|
Quote:
Yeah, I worked the customer service desk, so after the person was done reaming the poor kid on the aisle or the check out line, I got them...[sarcasm]FUN![/sarcasm] |
I was in the theater lobby one day and I saw a girl drop some of her money. She picked it up, but missed one coin. I go pick it up and tell her she forgot that one coin, and she denies she dropped it. I tried to tell her again that she dropped it, but she still denies it. So I just decided to keep it. I told someone about this, and the person told me that the girl probably thought I was just trying to pick her up when I really wasn't. Perhaps she in all honesty didn't realize she had missed one coin when she was picking them up.
Last year in September, I also went through something that kind of made me feel as though no good deed goes unpunished. One day I rescue a kitten from the street and take it to a shelter so it can get cleaned up and maybe adopted. It was cool that I got to do something like that, but three days later I end up hitting a pedestrian with my car. They're totally unrelated acts, but the accident pretty much screwed everything up for me that week. |

And you must have had it GREAT! The kids on the floor generally get treated pretty bad, but the cashiers and customer service folks get sh*t on so much it's unbelievable. Especially once the crazies get past the cashiers and get sent to deal with someone else, because at that point they're generally enraged. The service industry is great, right? |
I was once called a perv for telling a woman her titty was out.
|
PERVE!
Kidding. Yeah, Our scanning lady had it just as bad...thought she usually had quite a bit of help. Heck, at one point I was training to be her stand in when she went on vacation...but luckily they brought some one else in when I became Video Dept. Manager (and still did mostly Customer Service Manager stuff). Heck, I was one of the few department managers who did his own scanning...to try and keep her work load low. At times, I still did a little bit, when I had to work as a stock clerk on Saturdays...while being the Video Manager mind you...(our manager was kinda a douchebag) and the produce guy would ask me to make him signs and tags and change his prices. Man it sucks being the "jack of all trades." |

I feel for you 1066, finding a wallet with money has got to be one of those situation where you have a tiny cartoon devil and angel version of your self sitting on your shoulders trying to convince to do the right/wrong thing. I'm afraid it may very well have been racially motiviated but I wouldn't let something like this get to you. In the long run that old fart is sure to get the same treatment he showed you back at him. Next time in this situation it's possiably best to just bring the wallet to a police station and let them handle it. As to whether I've been crapped on for doing something nice? Of course! I see it happen to everyone around me too so it's not like I'm getting singled out here. Just a few days ago this stupid guy was ringing out and his four year old was jumping back and forth over an empty cart that up againt the wall and she caught her foot on gaps in the floor of the cart and almost landed face first on the floor. One of the cashiers, some young guy, grabbed her before she could smack her face on the floor and picked her up. The father of this little girl doesn't say thankyou at all and starts yelling at him for touching his kid. This guy didn't even notice that his kid almost got seriously hurt because he wasn't watching her properly. At least his four year old had enough sense to say thankyou. I swear people suck and they don't think. |
Coming across lost wallets/purses, keys, cameras, mobile phones, ipods, *insert other small, expensive/valuable item here* should always be treated with doubt these days. :( People are so trigger-happy to be abusive, quick to sue or go crying to the legal eagles, it's best to hand it in to the cops or the shopping mall's 'lost and found' section. If the item's owner was smart enough to label their name/phone number on the lost item you can contact them anonymously telling them their wallet/whatever is at the police station.
Still, the world is full of ungrateful pricks. For every nice thanks you get, there's 20 rude gutpunches. I'd feel good about myself knowing I was the nice 1 out of the 20. :) |
well I guess this story has a happy ending...sort of. The older gentleman in question saw me in the neighborhood recently and came up to me and actually apologised for the way he acted toward me the day I returned his wallet. Which I was pleased with, I didn't expect him to lower himself enough to say sorry to me after the way he acted toward me. Though I still think this old man is still pretty ignorant I think my inticial assumption that his hehavior toward me was racial was true. While he was apologising to me he said, "I didn't think you people like you would be honest" his exact words. He might not have meant it like that but how I took it. Oh well maybe I'm making out of this than I should.
Just to clear up a few things, when I said if I ever found I wallet again I would do sh** I didn't mean I would keep it. I meant that I would litterly do nothing about it. Though acgually if I did find another wallet I would be responciable about it, I wouldn't just leave it. |
Good to hear... Sounds like the guy's not trying to hide his racism though. That's probably just the way he was raised since segregation was an issue in his time.

That's hilarious, in the worst way possible. Every time I find something like a wallet or phone or something I try to return it. Cuz I've had stuff returned to me as well so I just try to pay it forward i guess. Although you should never try to return something to someone while you're drunk... I saw one lady drop her phone at a party. I found it and tried to get it to her. She was leaving and I followed her out and she thought I was gonna harm her or rape her or something. But through my slurred words I told her that I found her phone and just wanted to give it back. She said thank you and laughed about the situation. She left and I was still kinda buzzed to know what had exactly happeed. I tried to get back in the party but it was apparently filled to capacity so I walked around trying to get sober before I took the bus home at like 3 am. |
Wow. That's funny, shuriken and was very nice of you.
|
Back when I was at university I was stood in line at a cashpoint behind some old fella who left about £180 sticking out. I grabbed it and ran after him, and when I caught him up and gave him his money he accused me of stealing some (he claimed he'd withdrawn £280), and actually flagged down a passing police car. He claimed that I'd distracted him at the cashpoint and pocketed his cash. It was only after I was searched and found to have no money on me, and the threat of checking the CCTV, that he finally agreed I hadn't stolen anything. Bastard.

False accusation counts for nothing over there? O_o

I put it down to my appearance at the time - I'm a big fella anyway (6'3" and pretty ripped back then), plus I was dressed rather "alternatively" - covered in tattoos, ripped jeans, dyed hair, that kind of thing. Now, almost 10 years later, I find the police for the most part are helpful and respectful towards me. But that old fella, he was a proper c**t. Really wanted his pound of flesh. I've come across many of his type... |
