Anyone find it funny that TMNT is rebooted along with all of DC?

In late August the entire DC universe will be rebooted with new #1's for every single series, essentially rebooting everything from Batman to Green Lantern.

And now TMNT is getting it's very first comic reboot ever. Do you find it a coincidence that TMNT and DC comics are being rebooted at the same time?

wilddiverse 05-31-2011 05:06 PM

Yes, it is a coincidence.

I can't believe DC is starting off almost fresh, almost 90 years of comic continuity being undone, similar to how Star Trek was rebooted with the new movie.

We have never had a comic reboot for Turtles before, so it's interesting to see if it's going to be worth it.

wilddiverse 05-31-2011 05:14 PM

No, wait-- I was wrong.

The Turtles have met Spawn. Spawn has met Batman. So the Turtles are already part of the DC Universe.

Oh, and Batman's met the Punisher. And the Punisher has met Jughead. The Archie TMNT crossed over with Archie. So the Mirage Turtles are part of the Archie Turtles universe!

It's all connected!

It's the great and glorious circle of life!

azrael 05-31-2011 05:19 PM

the turtles need a reboot, the dcu needs to hook new readers. all in all i guess its ok , i cant believe they are going to reboot batman/superman/action comics/detective comics all with number 1 :( such crap imo it will be just another DD renumbering, so all in all completely useless.

For the Turtles they need a fresh start something to strike the turtle mania again. bring in new and old readers and give them something to enjoy.

I watched that whole video, Lion King is a guilty pleasure of mine.

CyberCubed 05-31-2011 05:21 PM

We didn't really need a reboot, they could have set the new series in the Volume 1 era just after Return to New York.

I think a reboot is a very good thing, at least if we're not gonna have new Mirage stuff.

For me this is a great time for pop culture because I'm getting to see reboots of my two favorite franchises, Pokemon & TMNT.
It's like I'm reliving subdued versions of their respective manias all over again.

CyberCubed 05-31-2011 05:28 PM

Pokemon hasn't really been rebooted, it's just another generation. It's not like all the old Pokemon and characters no longer exist.

Wait....isn't the Ultimate Universe getting a pseudo-reboot. Dun-Dun-DUH!!!!

Well, it technically has. I mean that's what the creators have said was their aim. Many of the new Pokemon are based on that of the first gen. Emolga is the new Pikachu, Sawk & Throh are the new Hitmonchan & Hitmonlee, Terrakion and the other two legendary beasts are the new Entei, Suicune, etc. Even the anime is supposed to be a reboot. Ash started fresh, having grown up with Pikachu but never really doing anything else until he went to Unova with Oak & his mother for a vacation. I don't know if the story is the same in the English dub, but that's the source material. Not to mention, the toys and cards are booming really hard again. I've not seen that stuff fly off the shelves with such speed since the original generation came out.

No! Obviously DC heard that TMNT are getting a reboot and they have to compete with that because the world revolves around TMNT!

Yay, I've learned to speak CyberCubed :D

--EDIT--

Marvel are so stupid for not rebooting too... They won't survive 2011!

--EDIT 2--

Also, do you think DC could buy the rights to Scratch to compete with TMNT?

Yes we have: Year of the Turtle, written by none other than Spider-scribe Dan Slott, was intended as a reboot for the Archie series.

Year of the Turtle was still part of Archie just with different writers, hence the continuity with Shredder and Splinter being Hamato Yoshi.

In the story Splinter tells Mike, "This is the last Turtle story, after this one you'll have heard them all."

That line brought a tear to my eye while reading it, because I knew it signaled the close of the Archie series. They probably prepared those issues with an ending just in case the series got canceled, which it did.

Year of the Turtle served as a very valid substitute for the Forever War.

Adam 05-31-2011 07:36 PM

Yes, it's a coincidence.

You can get there through Dragon, too--he's met Superman twice (three times unofficially). And it's specifically the post-Crisis Superman. And the crossovers didn't involve dimensional travel.

PizzaPower 05-31-2011 08:11 PM

i think a re-boot is good even though i still want volume 4 finished, also i think its very very very awesome that batman is starting over cause thats the main reason why i didnt want to read it before cause i like to start from the start not them middle or anything, also DC has a bunch of different Batman stories. Are they going to stop doing those??

Wouldn't call killing off the majority of the interesting characters and replace them with lame and/or boring ones a reboot, more like a funeral in making.

I'm going to have to disagree with that... mostly because of how much I really don't like the Volume 1 stuff to be messed with anymore than it has to be. To me, it has a perfect beginning and end, and I don't know how much I like the idea of adding more into it; not to mention the fact that there would be way too much continuity baggage.

Honestly, I actually like that this new series is happening. It's a fresh start, and a new continuity. The TMNT are characters that can be adapted in a myriad of different ways (and have been), so it's kinda cool to see a mature approach that's completely new, since previously only one universe out of the entire TMNT multiverse has ever fit the criteria of being for an older audience (that being the original universe). Added to that, I like that it's combining elements from different interpretations into it, as well.

So, really, I welcome this new series, and I'm sure it'll be a very unique take on the Turtles. So I definitely don't think it's unnecessary.

Thorneyeagle 06-01-2011 09:08 AM

I have to be honest. Typically I am against reboots.and remakes. I say typically cause there are times it is an exceptable course of action. For instant the Tmnt universe did not really NEED to be rebooted. It has a fanbase and a well known story. However, it works for a reboot because new owners means new way of thinking. So the turtles persinalities will shift in new ways does not work well in the current world. personally speaking.

i find the Dc reboot unnecessary. They are doing it because they have gotten so expansive in the number of comics it is very very hard to jump in and know everything. So its all marketing and in a way hurts the franchise. it leaves characters treading water and repeating tired old stories. But thats just me talking.

Tuxedo Moroboshi 06-01-2011 10:19 AM

In DC's case, I actually do agree that it is completely unnecessary... and I'd argue the same thing about the Ultimate Marvel universe.

^And that's one of the biggest reasons why. But with the TMNT, I feel like they're free to do pretty much anything. I like the idea of brand new stories without continuity baggage, which is one of the reasons I'm so excited for this new comic series.

Thorneyeagle 06-01-2011 10:44 AM

i think they do have more freedom with tmnt because they are not rebooting 70 years worth of material. only 25. I may be more for this cause i am a fan and i wanted the ability to walk in fresh...so its biased. In the end there is little difference between reboots...and this has been the century for them....

CyberCubed 06-01-2011 04:48 PM

25 years is still a long time. And the Mirage universe isn't completely closed yet, there is still the end of Volume 4 and Image 25 to go.

Tuxedo Moroboshi 06-01-2011 05:19 PM

Perhaps, but there's nothing about this new series stopping Laird from continuing volume 4.

Candy Kappa 06-01-2011 05:25 PM

DC are probably gonna just restart the issue numbering to lure people in to buy a load of #1's

Ninjinister 06-01-2011 06:16 PM

Where are you seeing that DC's going to get a complete reboot after Flashpoint? There are dozens of ongoing stories that will still be in play by the end of Flashpoint that will piss people off if it all just goes away.

Spitfire 06-01-2011 06:22 PM

All of DC getting rebooted isn't funny, it's retarded.

Venom 06-01-2011 06:36 PM

It's doing exactly what they wanted...drawing attention and getting people talking, which they hope will lead to people picking up the books to see what's going on.

Thorneyeagle 06-02-2011 07:34 AM

as i previously.mentioned i believe....it is all marketing. I heard they did this previously.in '85 i believe or they attempted to do so.
Also in comment to 25 years to 75 years it was obviously a bias comment and ment to poit out the vast difference in length of time. yes both have decent sized continuity already.

CyberCubed 06-03-2011 10:11 AM

I will not believe Mirage continuity is truly over until PL confirms there will never be a Vol. 4 conclusion or Tristan can't finish his gang war story.

Even so, I think it was hinted that IDW might put out specials that fit into Mirage continuity rather than their own. Tristan at least might be able to conclude his gang wars story over there.

That's it.

DC is shaking things up, and this is no doubt drawing ALOT of attention. But as far as the whole 'reboot' thing goes, that's apparently NOT the case with this.

With The New DCU – the September launch of our 52 #1s – we have created an event that we believe will generate unprecedented buzz, and, more importantly, unprecedented sales results for you. This is a shock to the system, no question, but we have the quality stories and the unrivaled sales/marketing support and the increased public attention to help you best absorb that shock and profit from it.

We know that you want more details on the creative teams and their title-by-title assignments for the launch. . (And by the way, let me just reiterate this point: this is the launch of the New DCU. It is not a “reboot.” I think you will soon discover why that is.)

Dude, C3, Peter has pretty much said on his blog that he doesn't feel like he'll ever get around to finishing up Volume 4 and has toyed with going ahead and posting a synopsis of where the stories were going.

Which he later contradicted by saying he doesn't want to post those summaries just in case he does finish Vol 4 properly. He even said he hopes IDW doesn't do a Vol 4 conclusion themselves, not that they would anyway.

He may have mentioned the bit about IDW not finishing Volume 4 because it may violate his 18 issues/year clause.

Eh, who really knows with Peter. Give him five years away from the Turtles and see how he feels then.

Will it be any easier for him with the TMNT coming back a 3rd time, basically in his face? I think he needs no turtle-exposure, like at all, including any form of outside media.

Logan 06-03-2011 07:32 PM

Instead of rebooting TMNT, they should just release Vol. 1, 2, and 4 in an Omnibus collection. Then newcomers don't have an excuse that the comic is inaccessible.

All that material wouldn't fit in one volume. IDW's collections are usually a good deal smaller than what you'd find in a Marvel omnibus, and Marvel doesn't tend to exceed 50 issues even in its fattest books. TMNT volumes 1, 2, and 4 clock in at over 100 issues, and that's not counting any integral one-shots or tie-ins. So, they'd have to break them up anyway. And while they're at it, why not include vol. 3?

Sure they would-- price. It would be pretty unreasonable for IDW to demand that readers shell out big bucks for expensive hardcover collections just to be able to understand what's going on in a brand-new series.

I know some readers are going to pony up for all the collections, many of us included, but IDW is being smart in not forcing us to. The new series should be accessible on its own feet and in its very first issue. And even if it was continuing from the old continuity, it shouldn't read exactly like a new issue of TMNT Vol. 4 -- it should be a good jumping-on point.

Logan 06-03-2011 10:09 PM

I'll address your issues point-by-point.

1) "All that material wouldn't fit in one volume. IDW's collections are usually a good deal smaller than what you'd find in a Marvel omnibus, and Marvel doesn't tend to exceed 50 issues even in its fattest books. TMNT volumes 1, 2, and 4 clock in at over 100 issues, and that's not counting any integral one-shots or tie-ins."

I don't propose that everything be put in one huge book. It would have to be broken up into multiple books.

Dark Horse is releasing all 110 issues of Marvel's Star Wars collection in multiple books, so my idea not without precedent.

2) "And while they're at it, why not include vol. 3?"

I'd assume that there would be some rights issues with regards to Image's own characters. A less important reason would be to keep the comics running smoothly together in terms of continuity. I, personally, would love Vol. 3 collected, too.

3) "Sure they would-- price."

The success of Dark Horse's various Omnibus collections would prove otherwise.

4) "It would be pretty unreasonable for IDW to demand that readers shell out big bucks for expensive hardcover collections just to be able to understand what's going on in a brand-new series."

Not really. DC and Marvel have been doing it for years. They reference characters and events from comics made quite a while ago (i.e., The Killing Joke, which is available for purchasing).

5) "The new series should be accessible on its own feet and in its very first issue. And even if it was continuing from the old continuity, it shouldn't read exactly like a new issue of TMNT Vol. 4 -- it should be a good jumping-on point."

I agree with you on this to some degree. I do think that the new comics should be blazing their own trail and not rehashing old storylines. You should be able to jump right in and enjoy it. However, I don't think the continuity should be wiped clean because some readers might not get a reference to an issue from the Eastman & Laird run. A little note like "See the classic issue TMNT #8" would work fine. Plus, from a business stand-point, it would pique the curiosity of the reader and make them buy the collections just to learn what happened.

Anyway, that's my two credits worth. :trolleye:
